Braga Portugal - A Walking Tour & Discussion About Living in Portugal

  • I've been living in Braga Portugal for over a month and can say that so far I love living in Portugal. Expat life in Portugal has been so much fun. I will say there have been a few ups and downs, however, the payoff is being able to explore this beautiful country and this fun little city that I now call home. Braga is quite an old city and under the Roman Empire was know as Bracara Augusta, and after living in Italy as an expat it is fun to get to see the Roman connection between the two countries. Located in the north of Portugal, Braga is a small city with a population just shy of 200k inhabitants. It offers a lively yet relaxed atmosphere situated in the mountains with plenty of restaurants, cafes and entertainment. In this special episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter on this walking tour of Braga, I also get into some topics regarding living in Portugal vs living in Italy and my experience so far. I can say that without a doubt I am grateful I have now had the opportunity to live in both countries as an expat abroad.

    Speaking of the fruit trees, Portugal is famous for its oranges, which they exported to the rest of Europe, which is why in some Italian dialects (like Neapolitan), an orange is called a "purtuallo"

    Hey Rafael! So glad you are enjoying Braga. Was born and raised here and went to live outside Portugal for some years and I have to say its a great city to live in, missed it alot, it has many places explore but also quiet and fun. Regarding the pastry parts if you ever want recommendations say so, ill be happy to give it to you. You actually passed on the video on a "big one" of Braga, Frigideiras do Cantigo, its a bit up street from the big Braga sine. Best Meat Pies you will ever taste, just a small tip, ask for a warm one. Welcome to Braga!!! :D

    Appreciate the tour of Braga! Also just wanted to say thank you for the tips and advice for getting Italian citizenship. I am just waiting on one more document from the provincial government to complete my Italian application. I am a Canadian who has been playing semi pro American football in Europe for 3 years now. I fell in love with Europe and I can see myself living on this side of the pond. Your videos have been encouraging! Keep up the great content Paisan!

    This is a perfect video Rafael! Always love to see places we visited (late Oct 2021) and places we haven’t seen. We also noticed the hilly parts of the central area you mentioned, particularly near the large gate you showed where we had lunch. Lots of nice memories of Braga. We visited some Roman Ruins near the central area (who would have expected that?) and in the distance, far, far away I could see the Bom Jesus sanctuary. Braga really looked spread out. We hope to return in March or maybe April or maybe May…Covid-willing so we’ll always appreciate the walking videos and ANYTHING related to food! 😋 Obrigado my friend.

    Braga's beautiful!! Portugal would have been on our list of places to move, but they are not inside dog friendly. You can also eat limpets. They're really good. What was amazing to me was when we got to Lagos in June all the orange trees had fruit. I'd love to see the pastries!

    My Italian citizenship was recognized but I am shy to say....love Portuguese food and they are so cheap compared to Italy. Some Brazilian cities inherited the black and white side walks design like Rio and Santos.

    • @RafaelDiFuria
      @RafaelDiFuria  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also love Portuguese food 😋
      Especially some of the foods that you can see are somewhere between what you expect of Portugal but with a Brazilian influence... suuuper good 😋
      I remember seeing the sidewalks in Brazil and was so surprised to see them in Portugal as a kid... then I found out where the style comes from 😅

      @@RafaelDiFuria Your statement hits close to home for me and reminds me of a time in my life way back in 1992 when I was 25 (I am 54 now) and I was happily living in Rotterdam, Netherlands when I was in the Army, fullfilling a long awaited dream to live in Europe, a dream I worked very hard to attain, but unfortunately, it was short lived due to my husband having a severe psychotic episode a few months after arriving ( the original plan had been to live there for 3 years) that led to him being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder which is a very serious illness requiring quick and intensive lifetime treatment. Sadly, that meant I had to cut my tour short and return to the U.S so he could be treated. I admit, it was a great disappointment for me and it made me angry to have to let go of my dream for my husband's sake but like you said, family comes first. On the other hand, though, I am thankful we were able to travel a lot during those 6 months before he got sick (he had been stationed in Germany for 5 years before we met but hadn't done much traveling). I actually was very lucky to be sent to Italy on a month and a half long business trip and was able to see Rome, Florence, Venice, Verona, Pisa, and Carrara. I would have liked to have gone back to Europe at some point but it wasn't possible so I now settle for traveling vicariously and "living" in Europe by watching videos like yours.

    Say what you want, it’s not Italy. Wow they have a Starbucks. For all the years you spent in Italy, you traveled so little there. It’s only a matter time before you leave Portugal. You don’t need a scarf, but you’re wearing one. Ha .

    • @RafaelDiFuria
      @RafaelDiFuria  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sounds like you've never been to Italy yourself 😆
      and to add.... Did I ever say it was Italy? Maybe you never realized that there is more than one beautiful country in the world.
      How do you know how much traveling I've done in Italy? I only post a very small portion of my life online :) You may not need a scarf when you leave the house but by the time it gets dark the temperature drops and it's necessary.
      You seem to truly have distaste for me and who I am, so why have you bothered to come and waste your time to spew negativity on a video? You've just waisted time equal to how much of this video you've watched plus the time to comment... I'm so sorry you have nothing better to do with your life that you would be so bored that this fulfills your needs to fill your time.
