Lotus Eletre EV SUV - detailed first look

- NEW Lotus Eletre EV SUV first look. 373 mile range 600hp electric Urus/SQ8 beater. The Lotus Eletre, also known as the T132, but conceived as codename Lambda is the company's first SUV, first 4 door and is all electric with 600+hp and 373 mile range. It will be solely made in Lotus' huge new factory and dev facility in Wuhan, China (yes, that place) and takes the fight to the likes of Cayenne, Urus, SQ8 and other cars of a genre Jonny quite vocally doesn’t particularly like.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
The intrigue, however, is Lotus' approach. This carbonfibre and aluminium thing looks like the Urus always should have. It’s a very sporty crossover/coupe type shaped beast. It is 4 or 5 seat and will have over 600hp, awd (with optional 4ws) and rapid charge ability of up to 350kW. So it's fast.
It is also exceedingly luxurious, so as to whet the appetites of new customers who haven't been attracted to the Lotus name prior to now.
The Eletre's aggressive looks are focused around air flow. There are huge dug-outs all around the car, from bonnet area (a little like the cruelly overlooked Jag iPace EV) and under the rear light bar. You can see right through to tyres and brakes. The front end has petal-inspired active air flaps, which we bet Lambo wish they'd invented for their hex-themed creations.

That is utterly beautiful! The detail on the led strips in the handles and the led bar on the back. Looks very Lamborghini Urus in slight details.
Those fin style spoilers look neat too.
Nicely done on this episode Jonny and also nice to see a sneaker boot and brake caliper colour match going on 😂

I don’t think it’s aimed at the Greggs demographic, Lotus have to have his car, as an X50 buyer, I want to test drive this ..
What is it about Jonny that reminds me of an Automotive Kevin McCloud? Whatever it is, this Lotus is certainly a Grand Design...
It's Granada Designs
Cheers Ben. If the truth me known, I've always been inspired by the McCloud during his elongated verdicts to camera.
Funnily enough, I was literally just thinking about Jonny's Kevin McCloud-ness as I watched the Mazda barn find video earlier this evening!
@@TheLateBrakeShow That's fascinating to hear actually, as it was something I thought the moment I saw your work, but you do absolutely have something unique in my view

Love Jonnys interview style, it’s like 2 mates chatting in a pub or a TED talk - EV’s price simply crazy - but tonnes of competition with the new SUV’sFerrari , Bentley, Aston , Alfa, Jaguar, Bugatti, Porsche, Maserati, Audi, Mercedes and Citroen.

Love this review.... Everyone else is a walkaround. Here Johnny talks with Ben from Lotus and gives PROPER explanation of the car and its design. Plus the company's future plans... Excellent. Thanks.
I've seen a few reviews now, but this has to be one of the most informative. Great formula to sit down with the designer and through a lot of features and choices on the car!
The best trade skill of Jonny is 1-on-1interview. I love how he's been doing it since fully charged show.
Jonny B Good!
I must admit, even as an SUV hater, Lotus have done a rather good job. If I had to drive an SUV, I'd take this over a Macan or Urus
And urus is a tractor

What a cool looking thing, and it looks like a great deal of thought has gone into the design of it too. Bonus points to Jonny for colour matching his shoes with the brake calipers :D
Johnny, you are a true professional! This is by far the best video I've watched on the Eletre. Your passion for all things motoring shines through, and I always get the impression that the manufacturers really appreciate this and open up to you more than any other journo. Cheers!
This video is so cool! Congratulations Johnny on the respect and reputation you’ve built to merit this sort of treatment by the manufacturers.
An irony that Tesla built upon the elise. What a missed opportunity to build a compact ev sports car.
And still the only production EV sports car anyone has ever made is the old tesla roadster. Literally zero market saturation, just a shit ton of SUVs and saloons I don't care for
They're coming.
Dodge actually built an ev prototype called the circuit in 2010. Which was also based on an Elise chassis. Damn good looking little sports coupe it was to imo anyway. Unfortunately they never built it for the public. But you can find a few test drives of the prototype on here. 👍🏻
no missed opportunity. Just a different model coming shortly.
I absolutely loathe the term "lifestyle product". If I was Jonny I'd have looked directly at the camera, made a cut throat gesture with his hand, then got up and walked away, tearing the page out of his notebook as he went.
Aren't all products that aren't an absolute necessity a 'lifestyle product'?
Brilliant episode, thanks Jonny and TLBS peeps.
I must say, hats off to Lotus, I'm not a massive SUV fan, estates all the way for me, however, as mentioned if the Eletre sells enough to help develop more sports cars, or even a colab or two, Lotus Cortina EV anyone, I'm all for it. I think Porsche etc will be scratching their heads wondering what the heck has just happened...😄
I’d be worried it would be more like the MG approach

Man Jonny I wasn’t expecting this. Very very cool intro by the way. FairPlay to Lotus, best of luck to them on this project.
That intro almost put me off watching the video. In the end I just muted it and waited for the talking to start. Loud obnoxious music does not enthuse me.

Hands down the most informative review of the Eletre. Another great episode of TLBS Johnny 👏🏽
It is so pleasant and relaxing to watch Jonny with his Amazon interview skills.. the Lotus designer keeps saying it is for Mass market, but this EV is extremely pricey though.. Please upload your videos in 4K video resolution as well, these are top class Reviews, love from India!
From the chairs to the technical design elements. What a superb and informative video. A pleasure to watch Jonny, keep up the good work!
Nathan, thanks for watching.
It looks strikingly like the Kia EV6, Electric SUV's are all starting to look very similar.
I can't tell any of them apart.
I agree, bonus fact my wife has an EV6 and it’s the same colour as my Elise S1 (but weighs a bit more)
They are all copying the Jaguar I-PACE.
It does but I kinda like it
No, this one is going for the Aston, Porsche, Lamborghini market.
For the brief (build an electric suv) I think they've nailed it - it looks very engineering led which is what I'd want from the brand, and really glad to hear the focus on sustainability.
Great vid Jonny (and excellent colour matching!)
Wow it look like the resurgence of Lotus is very real, wonderful to see, a very exciting car!
I did enjoy your teasing him about whether Lotus would be bringing out an estate car, Jonny. A Lotus sports estate could be cool.
Excellent video, as ever. Love the fact that in the first part of the interview, I didn’t feel Ben was as comfortable explaining the market positioning as he was explaining the front end! Good! You can hear the passion in his voice as he talks about this car! And those petals - what a beautiful word for that solution. Love it. Want it.
I suspect in the real world they'll be an absolute nightmare. A stone hitting one would probably snap it.
A product, the product, the product, product, product, product. Fair play to Jonny trying to make it not sound like the guy's flogging washing machine.
(Lifestyle) Product …. They have no passion for it at all, marketing made them make the …. Urgh Product.
First 4 door Lotus? Poor Carlton. I think this is going to be grower. I totally get it, like your opening comments say, lotus is not just trying to survive, it's trying to thrive.
Carltonm wasnt a lotus though. it was a vauxhall that was tuned etc by lotus. just as the 'lotus' cortina was 3 decades previous to the Carlton
@@petelattimer6808 it was more of a side joke of symantics, as it was still technically a 4 door lotus and it held a type name (104). I'm very aware it was a Vauxhall/Opel. Lotus Cortina was a 2 door.
Wow so much engineering just on the front it's amazing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Looks like the lovechild of the Urus and Kia EV6. Pleasing on the eye though, and the interior looks excellent. First thoughts are that this is a really strong first effort in the segment for the brand. Quality and reliability will need to be spot if it’s going to be in the consideration set with the established names. Good luck to them.
Great handle. Mr Porter would approve
Agree, I know why it exists but don't see anything particularly 'Lotus' about it
Whilst others are watching the slick live show at 8pm on other channels...I'm here watching more TLBS quality.
Thank you Mr T
That's a very interesting design and looks incredible .. I have a feeling all those aero tunnels around the tyres will create some interesting mud patterns during the winter months as the air flow exhausts the mud out of the channels ..
Carbon-fibre aero-duct-mudflaps will be available as a factory-fitted option. "Simplify and add lightness/carbon-fibre-mudflaps"
I know people who spend 100k on a car probably don’t worry about cleaning it. But this looks like a nightmare to clean. Beautiful looking thing.
Only if you use your tongue😜 hose would have no problem.
Why does it look difficult too clean?
Looks like the Urus, just better. I noticed Jonny's matched the brake calipers this week.
Awesome video Jonny :D Im really enjoying these episodes you are producing where we hear the designers process and purpose of each detail! great stuff!
It's a good looking thing. I like how they've tried to show that its related to the Evira but I would like to see the state of it after some heavy winter miles. All if the crap off the road spraying off the tyres and being funnelled through those aero tunnels all down the side of the car and around the rear corners.
like the urus i imagine wont see many winter months.
My thoughts also, the car will very rarely be clean
Well, I have a reservation in for this car. I live in Norway so it will get heavy winter driving here. But yes I also wonder if this has been tested in Scandinavia’s harsh winter conditions.
I can listen to that man speak all day. I like how he explains things.
Another top class review of an utterly stunning vehicle, bravo Lotus for taking a big step away from the norm, for them anyway. I did have a sneaky peak at other reviews, but.......no, Jonny hits the mark every time, don't bother with anyone else.
Noel, thank you. And you were right about Lotus being brave. It is bold, and boldness should be applauded. I have every hope it will help to bolster the company that can then bring niche lightweight sporty things to us.
Fantastic interview with the design Commander of Lotus, such a bold move forward as other brands fade, lotus has a birth rebirth. Brilliant details revealed. Thank you for your approach to this reveal.
Living in a country where it's cold and a car can get completely caked with ice and snow I am more and more sceptical of new designs
I've not really been a fan of lotus since the early 90s....but this...THIS is stunning.
There is nothing about that that follows simplify or ad lightness
'Old' Lotus stopped following that ethos under Chapman who tried taking the Esprit up market. Strange how so many Lotus 'fans' forget that.
Wow, I'm all over the place with this video. Great looking thing for what it is (another big SUV). I understand they're going where the money is. I hope this allows them to make smaller cars.
Also, I grew tired of the sales waffle, refering to it as a 'product' and wtf does lifestyle mean in this conext? I'd rather just have Johnny perving over it in his inimitable style.. OTSOT.

As a former automobile designer, I tip my hat to Russell Carr and his team for delivering such a slick design. Not my kind of car, but the execution and the thought that went into the details is impressive, puts many larger carmakers to shame. Well done 👍

Is it just me or did that guy from Lotus look completely embarrassed when describing Lotus future plans? SUV’s, saloons, maybe a cross-over, all electric, made in bloody Wuhan of all places…. He looked very shifty indeed and often wouldn’t make eye contact with the reviewer. He didn’t light up until he started talking about the headlights!

Jonny sets the bar high for quality car reviews. The jaw dropping Electra is even more appealing when the design considerations are discussed and explained. Lotus has demonstrated a command of car design that few rivals car match. I hope Jonny gets to drive the Electra so we can see through his keen eyes just how well this car performs.
Exquisite presentation Jonny! I ALWAYS learn so much from your work…both in terms of the subject in discussion and your craft in the storytelling. Excellent, excellent stuff, Jonny. Firstly, Lotus are very lucky to have Ben. I didn't want one before, but listening to his tech-infused patter and corporate design spiel actually makes me want to sell my house and buy one. These new EV reviews should be tagged ECLECTRIC DREAMS.
"simplify then add lightness"
_electric SUV_
😂👌
Of all the places to see a giant SUV... it is a bit sad that Lotus has had to succumb to the pressure given their whole ethos. We'll be seeing a Morgan SUV next.

They will have too,to survive!
I will keep my 815kg S1 Exige, till the day I die.A thing of beauty from the past! Long live Lotus.
Probably THE MOST beautiful and desirable SUV I have ever seen. Wow.
Ive only watched 9 seconds and I can see a problem. The charge port is in the wrong place !
Even if Tesla open up their network to other users, you will need to have a port on a corner 😂, (preferably a rear one) supercharger leads are very short !
Hopefully tesla and tesla supercharger become extinct. Who need their mightier than thou attitude, like apple. With the British government introducing funding to make all EV charging stations having contactless payment, we don't need tesla.
A great journalist reviewing a great car - thanks Jonny
I've been waiting ages for Lotus to be the first company to give us the first EV sports car and we get ANOTHER SUV! I give up.
Ha. We feel your pain.
Great review; depth, detail and substance. A genuine application of Hypercar design aero into a luxury SUV. It would be good to get the coefficient of drag compared to other similar vehicles.
Stunning car. I would not buy it simply because of China's human rights record. Given the Russian situation its a very bold move.
i presume you don't own or use anything made in china .. 🤔
@@terrywrist8448 I wish. That said you can try your best to avoid them and for large purchases it's still possible.
Some of the cars I see on this channel are unlike any other channel on here, love it, tonight I’ve gone from a Mazda garage find to this Lotus
Great car , but Wuhan China has to be the worst place to open your operations plant.
I hope Lotus keeps is operations grounded in the UK and not overseas.
agreed, china in general is a bad idea.
It's a great idea.....once you see the size of the market there.
I had a drink every time the word ‘product’ was mentioned. I am now hammered.. 🥴
23:51 You'd think for a £100k car, the boot wouldn't be operated by the motor from an Aldi blender.
Did sound a little agricultural.
possibly not the finished spec of motor, since its pre production model
Ah no. Thats not an Aldi blender motor. That is the quality you get with Chinese products.
Great video as always. I was dreading a Lotus SUV but I'm pleasantly impressed. btw. Lotus Carlton had 4 doors ;)
Great video and the car looks like a nice one for those who want to spend £100k (I guess) .
Not a fan of the pedestrian slicing beak personally
I quite like the idea of snapping the odd pedestrian now and then, it's the 100k part that gets to me! 👍
@@MattyEngland going to cause a heck of a mess with all those air scoops
Brilliant Jonny! Best of the 1st three reviews out!
Having a laugh at £100k .. it’s a £65 - £80k car.
I see TLBS new video, I watch. This lotus looks great 👍
I thought it was the Kia EV6 when I saw the thumbnail. I don't know if that says bad things about Lotus or good things about Kia.
Great video, this channel is always my go to first view on release days.
Dave, appreciated!
Another huge, incredibly expensive EV 😍
