The Lotus Eletre Is The Maddest Car You'll See All Year

  • Jack takes a first look at one of the most highly anticipated electric cars of the year, the new Lotus Type 132 - or to give it its proper name, the Eletre. The Eletre signals the dawn of a new era at Lotus who, under the watchful eye of Chinese backers Geely, intend to place a heavy focus on electric ‘lifestyle’ vehicles in the coming years, as well as the nimble, two-seater sports cars the brand has built its reputation on. But is this two-and-a-bit tonne SUV sufficiently ‘Lotus’? Check out the video to find out.

'Oit Jack! We've seen enough giant SUVs we can't afford!' Is not something I thought I would ever be thinking whilst watching a video about a Lotus. Still, they're just joining the ranks of Aston Martin, Lamborghini and numerous others in churning out cars to suit the ever buoyant SUV market. Hopefully their next offerings will be more interesting.

@@johngrubb1590 No no, it starts at less than 100.000£ for the lowest model, and then I have to ask why not just buy a Model S plaid ? It's the same price, has a smaller battery but goes further by around 15%, so it's faster to charge too because of the smaller battery. It has nearly double the horsepower at 1020 vs the 600, it's faster by 1 sekund (if it matters) from 0-100km and has nearly 100 km higher topspeed, and has a gaming/information system.

Obsessive about weight, yet motors on absolutely everything, including to make the central screen tilt a bit for no apparent reason. This feels like a nod to Lotus philosophy as opposed to being actually designed using that philosophy.

Except: we then discovered the voice control (hit button on the steering wheel and deliver the command) does most of the few things you want to do when driving (wipers, etc, if auto is annoying). Mostly, there isn't anything. If the temperature suddenly drops, you can say "my arse is cold" and the driver's heated seat comes on. There are more polite ways of doing that. It would be amazing if Lotus didn't have voice control.

Lotus or Chinese Geely? China are slowly hollowing out western companies and jobs. They cannot get traction with their own brands so they use western brands against us. This hollowing out will eventually empty out every single sector as they move all industries in house to China. Lotus knowledge will be sucked out and moved to China. The staff in the UK will be used and tossed aside. By buying a Chinese car, unlike any other purchase, you are directly supporting a Chinese Communist Party owned company. All car companies in China are directly or indirectly owned by the CCP. You are supporting CCP design, technology, and engineering. China are a self proclaimed enemy of western democracy and free people, that may sound like hyperbole but it is manifestly true. They are a communist/totalitarian regime. Partnership is not a part of their thinking process. It is the cover they use to slowly dismember western economies. They do not want partnership they want control and ownership. This is and will increasingly bleed in to political control and eventually erosion of western freedoms. China simply cannot allow freedom of thought or speech, it is not only antithetical but an existential threat to their regime. They need to extinguish freedom in as many places as possible. It is an innate need for all empires/civilisations to spread their model.
We are walking ourselves in to totalitarian control. If you think it seems too far fetched then you need to think deeper and harder. If you think this process will be benign, you are wrong. China will slowly tighten their grip on democracy, it is already starting to happen, they constantly require other nations to limit their speech. On the current course, in the not too distant future, your government will be controlled by China, directly or indirectly, you will not be allowed to change your government, and your government will impose every single decision handed down by China. You will not be able to protest or question these decisions. You and your children will grow up without any freedom for the rest of your/their lives.
As one example China forcibly sterilised and aborted their own women in the 80's, dragged them in to horrific surgeries, now the Uyghurs are being subjected to the same treatment....

This is one to lust over. I get the feeling this is how far Jag wanted to take the I Pace as some design principals are common between them. Jag obviously wanted to aim at customers wanting a less exotic price point. Lotus.... Awesome work! Always been a fan and agree with the segment you entered into as your first..... If impossible to make an EV light with todays batteries, start with a design expected to be heavy. Then when batteries improve, the low slung sports car with "added-lightness" and electric power can continue the brands future.

For people saying there already are subtitles: these are auto-generated captions, which are just a stream of words. No punctuation, and it's the best guess of an AI. While it is better than nothing, it is no substitute for professional captioning. I only mention this because I view this content as professional grade and pro content should keep accessibility in mind. They already have the scripts, it wouldn't even be that hard.

As one example China forcibly sterilised and aborted their own women in the 80's, dragged them in to horrific surgeries, now the Uyghurs are being subjected to the same treatment.

@@craigo2656 the design teams still in Britain and it's half Malaysian as well and they actually saved Lotus from going under and yes I'd prefer it to be all British owned but I don't think my £80 in the bank + whatever you've got will be enough, so it's going to be owned by another entities, the good thing being it survived. Also I don't believe the company is Chinese government owned and I hope they don't endorse the uyghur genocide.

Nice video and nice car but... if we want widespread take up of EVs by the masses, we'll need less of these ridiculously expensive overly spec'd luxury vehicles and more of the practical budget types... which raises the question: Where are the affordable EVs? I can't find one. I could buy 10 used Corolla's for the price of this one. This is how the economic calculation works for most people.... $10k is my sweat spot for a car. That's likely less than the price of an EV battery.

What new car is available at US$10k? A Dacia, perhaps. A Yaris Hybrid is US$27k equivalent in Australia. You're better off looking at the used market.

There's a lot to like if you're into this form factor. I'm pleased by the buttons in the interior and that the information bar in front of the driver is at least somewhat shaded.
I'm not sure about the rear aero vents in motorways in rain, dust, or snow though. Is following traffic going to get sandblasted with road salt/sand, and will it impede visibility with water spray through those striking features? I know that historically, bad weather isn't when people would have been driving their Lotus, but if how people drive the Cayenne is any indication, this would be an exception to that.
I'm similarly concerned about the active grill shutter implementation and how it handles ice and snow. And how you clean them.
