When MTV actually used to play music videos and this constantly shown when it came out I was a little kid but it made me obsessed with the chili's for life.
Blood Sugar Sex Magic is one my favortie albums ever. I don't think there are any skippable track on it for me.
"Under the bridge downtown, where I drew some blood..." is directly related to Antony's well-known heroin addiction at the time. One of my all-time favorite bands, as they are all just fantastic musicians (especially Chad Smith on drums and my man Flea on that bass! I play bass myself and he is widely regarded as one of the BEST, especially in the Slap style he is so well-known for). Peace & Love from Georgia, Girl!

This is a band very much worth your time to delve into. As someone already mentioned, this song is a bit of a change of pace, and yet still 100% Peppers. Also as mentioned below, Blood Sugar Sex Magic is an absolute masterpiece.

Jon is the guitarist. Chad is the drummer and he imbraces the Will Farrell comparison so much they did a drum off on Jimmy Fallon. This might be the only time i've seen Flee(the bassist) clothed, so if they did walk in your front door you would definitely call the cops LOL

This song is a departure for RHCP. They typically have more of a hard edged funk sound. Songs like Give It Away and Suck My Kiss have that thumping groove they’re best known for. Both are worth reacting to 👍

If you get a chance, read Anthony's autobiography. It is absolutely riveting. This song is about how he gave everything he cared about away in order to get just one more high.

They've only been around since 1983. The song is about him doing hard-core drugs under a bridge in LA.
I’d highly recommend “Soul to Squeeze” by them if you like this song.

A little bit more about the back story of this song. During Anthony drug addiction, he would go under this bridge to do drugs, a very dangerous place. And while he was under the bridge, his friend and fellow band mate had died because of an overdose. Anthony didn’t go to his friend funeral, instead he went back to the bridge. This is Anthony low point that he speaking of. Where he drew some blood, and gave his life away.
When he wrote this song, he had been clean a couple of years. But other members of the band was not. This is where he felt alienated, alone, and as bad as it was, it still wasn’t as bad as under the bridge.
Comments on the official video, of people love ones, that gave their life away. Is so heartbreaking.
Hope you went to check the studio version after this. This is a nice live performance, but the original recording is epic.
Re really being under the bridge Kiedis told in one of the interviews, that it was an actual place, where he used to buy drugs at that time.

Great reaction. You mentioned what they might be like performing live? Well, they have a great complete concert video, Live at Slane Castle, from 2003 (versus this video, which is recent). The individual song videos from this concert video are readily available on TH-cam. It would be great if you could react to one of those videos. I would suggest one or more of the following songs from those performances: Californication, Otherside, Parallel Universe, Venice Queen, or Throw Away Your Television. RHCP was one of my favorite bands as a kid and is still one of my favorite bands to this day. Me & My best friend would listen to Freaky Styley, TULMPP & Mother's Milk all day. And when Blood Sugar Sex Magik (which this song is from) came out we couldn't put that record down. The RHCP story is kind of a tragic Story Anthony's best friend and original guitarist Hillel Slovak died from an heroin overdose. However, that didn't get Anthony from stop using and would frequently go under this bridge in L.A. & do heroin with a bunch of gangbangers. Their new guitarist (and one of my favorite guitarist) John Frusciante also got addicted to heroin and left the band. I remember seeing an interview of him as a teenager in 1994 and he looked so emaciated from the drugs that it brought tears to my eyes. I'm glad that Anthony & John both kicked their addictions and got back together to make great music.

You know a band is good when they are parodied by Weird Al.
The RHCP got so overplayed for my generation at least this is the music of my thirties for example which persisted well to my forties because they had a long run, but it was almost so overplayed that and almost got hit to be derogatory towards them. But the thing was they were a force of nature. I saw them in concert many times and like you said, this is one of their subdued songs. Yeah. Check out some of their up-tempo stuff if you want to see them driving people wild. Probably their most famous album for people of my generation that were younger and into them when they were new, well not new but a bit later in their career, is Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Just go pull up a playlist of that and start exploring and you will see how intense they really are.
The other thing to be aware of and I really hope you go listen to the studio cut of this, is that they're doing it pretty close but the thing is on the studio cut as the song bills and at this point right now in it, they have some female backing vocals or at least some backing vocals that are in chorus way up high and it just adds this angelic transcendent quality to this. You've got to hear it.

Hearing the backstory to songs is great, but i still urge you to go and hear the albumversions (of every song you do), because they often bring a different experience. This one sounds very flat to me, missing the chorus in that climax.
