    Well that was funny...about 2:00 minutes into this video, an ad appeared "how to play acoustic guitar", but not an ad with Joe, just one of the other 1,000,000 guitar instructors on You Tube. Joe, you're top ten for sure!

    I'm really enjoying these playing tips (first acoustic, then electric). Re: vibrato, a big "a ha!" moment for me in my early playing came from a lesson with my cousin (at the time a pro session player in NYC, before leaving music for finance, alas). He watched me play, and pointed out that my vibrato was at a rate that was pretty much random, not in time with the music. Since then, that's one thing I notice as a difference between early players and more mature players-tying the vibrato rate to the tempo. You can see it here-as soon as you started playing a passage (as opposed to just a single note), your vibrato rate was adjusted to be in the tempo of the passage. Of course there is room for freedom with this, but it still a good starting point. -Tom

    Thank you Joe, I’ve been playing acoustic for twenty years and just got my first electric , it’s a strange feeling not knowing how to make the sounds I want to make, but these basics make sense.

    Since I was sent a Joe Robinson link, I was hooked! Obviously, Joe is an astonishing musician first of all, although of course a great guitarist. There is nothing flashy in his playing, even when he does terribly impressive technical things, because it's music basically lying behind, and not technique. And he is very cool, kind and he generously shares what he knows in order to help us be better players - as in this video. Thanks a lot, Joe, you're such a great guy. (just a complaint: too many ads across this video!)

  • @suaragitar

    You're very versatile mate. Chet's style (which is in your blood) to blues, rock, jazz etc. Inspiring!
    although real amps vs modelling will be highly arguable 😆 , but yes they can't replace amps! But some great session players use Axe FX in studio, John Mayer owns one but he did mention the things you mentioned regarding the lack of response that you get from an amp.

    Guthrie Govan uses them too. I remember seeing an interview where he expressed similar sentiments to you, that they don't react naturally, don't inspire the same ideas etc He seemed to think that they've come a long way since then. I saw The Aristocrats last summer when he was using one and he didn't seem uninspired! Comes down to personal preference though doesn't it.

    Thank you Joe, so much, for sharing things you figured out and learned. I love watching you play so much.. You are so at ease.. You are so right about amps. I have a Fender Twin Reverb, and 2 Blues Juniors. I tried for awhile using the plugins like Fender Tweed, and when I went back to my amp, there is no comparison of sound and feel of those real tubes!!

    Joe, thanks so much for doing this for us! Real amp vs amp Sims however is a matter of preference and Sims are getting so close to the amp sound and response that it's hard to tell the difference, oh well who am I to debate :)

    Interesting video. On tips to act like a pro I’d say :
    1. Listen the other musicians and find your place to serve the song
    2. Work your sound to be ready to play very quickly. Spending 1 hour to find your sound is unacceptable in profession musician world.
    3. Do your homework before the session / gig. Learn the bio of the artist you will play for, listen their music , try to enter in their artistic world.
    4. Always stay kind , respectable and come always on time
    5. Adopt a regular working routine to find your personal touch.
    6. Get paid at the end of each gig
    7. Think like a musician and not like guitarist.

      I like tube amps, the Fender Pro Jr is a great amp that you can find used for a good price. Solid State amps will do the trick though. The main thing I don't like are the super expensive amp modelers full of gagetry like the kemper, axe fx, helix.

    I bet you've worn out a lot of frets. Stainless or Evo frets are probably a great idea for you regardless if you like them just so you aren't getting dressings done all the time.

    About software amps: it's definitely true that the latency for a digital amp just screws with playing-- but-- when you're recording they're absolutely amazing. Record that raw direct signal from your guitar(use a DI or splitter to play through a real amp at the same time) so that you can put the recorded performance through a digital amp. Software amps can sound incredible, and you can easily manipulate the sound instantly-- don't disregard them altogether just because of the latency.

    The comment at the end to "get a real amp" was condescending.

    • @Joe_Robinson
      @Joe_Robinson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That wasn't the way I meant it! I've had many people saying they appreciate my honesty on the subject. Take it for what it's worth! All the best

    • @richhooper3949
      @richhooper3949 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Joe_Robinson You seem like a good person who didn't deserve such a blunt comment, but please don't forget there are lots of people trying to learn to play electric guitar that can't afford a tube amp. It probably doesn't make them feel too good when you say the amps they are using aren't "real." And of course, all the best to you too.

    • @Joe_Robinson
      @Joe_Robinson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@richhooper3949 Oh I'm actually saying that I am not a fan of amp 'modelers' like the Kemper which are very expensive and popular these days. When I say a 'real' amp I just mean a regular amp with a speaker.

    • @richhooper3949
      @richhooper3949 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Joe_Robinson Fair enough. Now I think I will go practice Freight Train on my Squier Bullet Telecaster and solid state amp.

      @Joe_Robinson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@richhooper3949 Nice one! Have you ever heard Jack Pearson play his Squire Strat? One of the most incredible players around, he gets a great sound out of that thing! Cheers, Joe
