Hello, I’m Joe - I’m a guitar player, singer-songwriter, producer, recording engineer and teacher!
On this channel you’ll find my original songs, covers and solo fingerstyle guitar arrangements. My favorite music doesn’t fit neatly in a box so you may hear me play folk, blues, jazz, & classic rock - you can call it what you want; I feel honored to speak this timeless language of melody, harmony & rhythm.
I was born on May 25th 1991 in Kempsey, NSW, Australia. Since 2010 I have been based in the US and currently live in the Rocky Mountains of Montana with my wife, Genevieve (who teaches illustration on TH-cam!).
I play Maton acoustic guitars, made in Australia (just like me) and am very proud to have my own signature instrument, the JR Signature!
In addition to song performances, you will also find guitar lessons, chord breakdowns, TAB, tutorials, gear reviews and other guitarist related content to help you stay inspired on the instrument.
I stream high quality livestream concerts regularly, if you’d like to be notified when I announce a livestream, you can put your email in here: joes.lnk.to/Li...
Please subscribe and ring the bell etc. 🔔
    Cheers!
    Joe

Great story on the value of making a solid commitment to do something.
I have known Admirals, generals and fighter pilots who grew up 100 miles from a paved road and went to school in a one room school house. Being relatively free from a lot of modern distractions might be a key part of the recipe.

You are a wonderful person, not only because you give free lessons, but this story that you used to collect money for people with your concerts is wonderful, greetings from Croatia where Mr. Tommy Emmanuel has played many times and I hope that one day you will too come to us in Croatia to show us your skills, which you have to spare, thank you very much for the lessons, you are excellent ❤❤👍👍

Hey Joe, as an old rocker from the 70s, I have seen your TedX the other day, first time seeing you. WTF! Lad, you blew me away. I have found out you know Tommy E. who I also have met a few times here in PA, USA. Watching your technique is simply an amazing feat. With that, I am glad you were stuck in the outback "having" to learn your ass off. Which you have. Congrats to you! I look forward to meeting you one day. I have an apartment in NYC, Greenwich Village. Between myself and a close friend, we have around 80 vintage guitars. Chet Atkins is one of my favorite players, I have a few of his vintage Gretsches. My favorite being a 64 Chet Atkins Countryman. Which was also George Harrison's favorite. Seeing the young lads like yourself taking the guitar to these new levels is a mind-blower. For me, it was learning how Jimmy Page tuned up for songs like The Rain Song and Black Water Slide, or Black waterside, originally by Bert Jansch, who I also got to know back in 1980s in San Francisco. Those were tough tunes to work out. Now, 40 years later, to see your talent at playing such quickly laid out melodies is mindblowing. Tell Tommy I said hey, and look forward to seeing the both of you one day, touring the states, here... Oh, that's right, your in Nashville!! Well, I know a bunch of players down in town there. So one day I may tap you on the shoulder and request a lesson in 21st Century Guitar!!! Enjoy... The sky's the limit, Brother!

Inspirational. Don't sell yourself short. You WERE that great. And that you had the balls to stand up to SONY as well as a TV production company… I know the industry and a few bands who are friends of mine were screwed by Atlantic (among others). I'd been asked to join Lucy Brown only days before the lead dropped from a heart attack. That wasn't so long after having lost another band slot thanks to a drunk driver.
Stay awesome, Joe. And Molly still loves "Fireflies". So does my younger son Harry.
BTW, Nashville's the center but have you spent a few Blues nights out at Beale Street in Memphis? Do your whatever you can to catch Richard Johnston doing his one-man-band gig in front of the New Dixie all the way down the road.

Joe, I just watched this one, thanks for making this. It’s always cool and interesting to hear how someone rises above challenges. I noticed your book collection in the back. Don’t forget to keep making your book videos. It’s interesting what grabs peoples interest. You should read Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. Oh, and also, Confederacy Of Dunce's by JK Toole. But the trick with that one is you have to hear the audio book because the narrator brings it to life. It’s on TH-cam. By the way, just saw Billy Strings in Sacramento. Really great show. Would love to see you two jam. Tommy Emmanuel probably has the connect to make that happen. Marcus King is another one. Antonio Rey and Philip Sayce ! Hope to see you on the road again soon Joe!

Do you realize that your face just lights up when you talk about music? :) It is absolutely amazing that your passion and obsession started when you were so young. You have put so much time and energy into your craft, it's not much of a surprise that you continue to improve. I'm trying to imagine how you will be playing in a few more years lol Anyway, you have yourself a faithful fan here (and I'm not the only one ). I've always loved listening to all kinds of music, but I was never very familiar with the fingerpicking style. So when I came across some of your videos, you introduced me to a whole new world of music that I have come to love. Thank you so much for that. Sorry this is so long :) Love to you and Gen!! xx

After hearing this, I realize why my musical career never took off. I thought I was committed but Joe was more obsessed than I was. 4am to practice 3-4 hours before school? Wow, that's dedication. I practiced, in a similar fashion but for a total of 2-3 hours per day after school. Got pretty good but not Joe level. I would have probably made the mistake of signing that contract if I were in his position which would have probably spelled my doom. In other words, I would have done the opposite of Joe and that's why he's a fantastic musician with a musical career and I'm an IT professional who plays a lot as a hobby now. Great story with a few lessons learned to pass on to young musicians.
Another common theme with all professional musicians that I have noticed, to quote @rhettshul, "There is no plan B." You're either going to be a musician or homeless. If you have a backup plan, you will ultimately use it. I had a backup plan...

It's funny, I had a similar early experience. Started on the piano at 6 but never really liked it. At age 11 I got to try out a guitar for the first time and fell in love. At 12 ( in 2000) I got my first guitar. I didn't have a teacher though so it wasn't till I was 15 that I actually started learning for real after meeting a guy by the name of Dave Pahanish who went to our church at the time. He never gave me official lessons but fixed up my guitar so it was actually playable and gave me pointers to get me started. I followed him around like a lost puppy for about a year learning as much as I could by watching him and asking questions. For a long time I was really just a folk rock or worship music player. I didn't really know how to expand my playing nor did I know anything at all about fingerstyle guitar. Fast forward to 2015 and I was finally introduced to Tommy Emmanuel and my life was changed. A year later I got really sick from Lyme disease and couldn't play for 2 years. During that time I really got into Tommy's music and my husband would constantly come home and see me watching his videos. As I started getting healthy enough to travel a bit he surprised me with tickets to see him. I got so excited I made a drawing for him to bring with me and ended up buying a meet and greet ticket. Chatting with him in the meet and greet was the turning point for me. I decided that night that I was going to pick my guitar back up and learn at least one of his songs. I learned Haba Na Haba first and it opened the floodgates for me. As a bonus, people around me were saying that since picking up my guitar again my health started getting better far more quickly. Now I'm getting ready to go to my 3rd Tommy camp and have played with or for him several times. I'll never be a professional but I absolutely love playing and would encourage everyone to play even just for fun. I'm hoping one of these days to meet you too. You're incredible and I really enjoyed hearing your story. Oh btw I'm good friends with Derick Salguero who you might remember. He really really looks up to you that's for sure.

    Greetings from Korea
Mr..Joe. I totally motivated and touched by your long story.
So now I realized that you are not a genius but you did many effort to earn technique and performance to be a great musician.
Word cannot describe how great you are.
So your point is "Great ability comes to great effort and practice" right?
Maybe I endeavor to follow your way for acoustic guitar practice ,for example wake up at 4am or 5am to practice right and left hand , fingering, performing so that I can reach your ability someday.
Really appreciated to share your good story and would it be possible to post this content on my Instagram or Facebook?
And would you please to upload " Keep it together " arrangement for full version for me?
I checked your arrangement on your Instagram so fantastic but it was not a full version only 1 minute play.
It would be great honor to check my comments Sir.

Thank you William! I made a video called 'Talent is BS' and I described some thoughts there.. I call it Flair, Focus, Feedback... Flair - do you enjoy it? Does it feel 'natural' to you? (for example Piano was not natural to me).. Focus - doing LESS, so you can make the choice to focus on the thing you feel is the right thing. Anything good requires sacrifice of some form or another. Feedback - environmental factors such as having great people around you for encouragement and advice - can be from books, videos etc. I also think developing good habits outside of music is very helpful, for example taking good care of your health physically and mentally. There is a spiritual element to it too... Anyway, I really encourage you to try an early morning 'deliberate practice' routine and see how it goes for you! Everyone is different so what works for me might not for you.. but I love it! All the best and thanks for requesting Keep It Together! I haven't played that song in a long time!!

Great story Joe. The music labels really chewed a lot of young talented people up and spit them out. I'm sure you can look back and come up with some names, especially living in Nashville.
Not Chet at RCA though. There's a Chet video out there where lots of artists sing his praises, like Willie Nelson for example "Chet did more for more artists than any other human being."
So many more stars weighing in also in that vid.
Anyway, your playing of Classical Gas on got talent sounded note for note with Tommy's arrangement. And that can't be easy.

I love Nashville, used to live there. I saw your first vid, rocking around the Christmas tree, love it. You're playing reminded me of Tommy's. Lol and behold, u know them. You're blessed bro. I really enjoy your playing. Lots of people that u mentioned I've listened to..esp Chet, Jerry, Tommy..so on. Keep playing! Your skill really shows..I "feel" the music.

So cool. It’s a difficult business , guitar and music. I hope you keep a lot of your business under your control. What’s cool today , is the technology allows a person to use to get out there without all the flying. I saw what 320 a year one day shows did to Tommy. With all due respect, Joe , I hope you are more clever than that . Cheers

this was a really interesting and inspiring story, but as a huge American Dad! fan, I was a little disappointed it didn't actually have anything to do with the song roger plays in that episode. But your opening was really funny and it was cool to see you play part of it lol.

Seems so long ago now. The footage of your win is a favourite of mine for the image of your grandparents Barbara and Bob, so ecstatic for you. No doubt in my mind they were your biggest fans. Sad they’re not here to see you now but you’re still doing them proud 👍
