What a wonderful young player, so appreciative to be able to share his passion. I believe we met the first year he played at CAAS, what a gift to mankind and fine example of how to be the best you can be.
Thanks so much Joe - good ideas. My main picking technique is “hybrid” with flat pick, but I realize the limitations and want to also be comfortable with thumb pick. The challenge for me is keeping the thumb independent - e.g. bass line. Ideas on this would be great. Thanks again!
Great advice Joe. I use the 'bell tone' effect a lot. Play say the G on fifth fret with the G 3rd string open. Or the B fourth fret with B second string open.
Thanks for these tips Joe! Freight train and Windy are two songs in my repertoire, and I like the little additions you showed. I’ll also have to remember that mirror idea!
Yes , so helpful on your explanation of the finger picking style and feel I do think to ,t listen and familiarise yourself with the tune over and over, hum it ,sing it ,what ever it takes to pick the changes in the tune I really enjoy you sharing your God given talent
When i was a beginner i would not even pay attention to it, but now i can see, right there, at 2:34, even with this simple melody, this signature insane vibrato goes through, showing the real skill. Lovely video. I ve never finished learning freight train, maybe i should get to it)
Hi Joe, I met you at the songwriting workshop at Asilomar. It was a motivating experience for me as I'm sure it was for most. We were so very impressed with the talents you brought to that event. How kind of you to share your tips on song composition. I admire all the artists you suggested we learn from. I met Towns Van Zandt and it fanned the flames for my songwriting journey. Thank you for your sharing your insights.
Joe, these tips & tricks are extremely helpful and your advice is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you kindly! I have been dabbling with this style for years, but never really got it down. I have developed some basic finger and thumb independence. I am very impressed that an accomplished player like yourself would take the time to share this information. You are a are a true gentleman and an asset to the thumb picking fingerstyle guitar community! I love listening to you play Joe...you are awesome!
Very good advice on how to keep the fingers relaxed when applying connected formats. Especially when shifting rhythms. A little at a time with a smooth put together. Less repetitive motion and more memory reflex development. Thank you for sharing your insights. Cheers, Vince James (Ajello)
Just invested in Udemy Fingerpicking Intermediate and Advanced by Joe Robinson. Well worth the funds - great teacher, well thought out lessons and delivery. Looking forward to more lessons by this guy.
Thanks for this Joe. The "practicing in front of a mirror" suggestion is great. It really helps provide oneself with feedback on posture, hand position, etc. And of course, I liked the reference to our mutual friend (and my former teacher), Daniel Levitin :)
Really helpful and interesting Joe! I've been transcribing your playing for years since like 2012 and it's great to hear you talk about how you do it. I'm going to share this video in particular with some friends and students. Please do ramble on about something else because I'm learning! Also I agree 100% with your Talent is BS argument too.
Great tips, thanks ! How do you prevent the note on the strings played with the thumbpick to overpower the notes played simultaneously on the other strings ?
Hey Joe, please do some more covers of classic 'folky' songs like your vids of Streets of London & Don't think Twice - which are near perfect and really inspiring - and not over embellished like many covers are..
This is a fantastic video. Some simple ideas which are truly great advice. Joe teaches in a very calm way and keeps it simple. He is one of my new favorites! Thanks, John Gig Harbor, WA
I really like this video. I only play fingerstyle guitar, and you just said a bunch of stuff it took me forever to figure out on my own! Good tip about using a mirror. Thanks!
I think you want a pick that fits nice and tight but doesn't turn your thumb purple. I use a Dunlop Medium, but it's worth going to your local store and testing a few if you can. I think Dunlop M or L will work for most people.
Thank you so much Joe for some really good advice! I think I remember you from Steve Krenz’s show explaining your fantastic harmonic technique? Terrific!
Great lesson as always! I don't comment on some of your outstanding videos, as I listen whilst driving long distances... 🎉 thanks for all your great videos JR!
The truss rod only adjusts the neck relief, when I take my guitar to my luthier, they'll cut the nut and saddle to get the action just right. They will also dress the frets and make sure the neck is straight. Highly recommend taking your guitar to a good luthier, it's very much an art and science!!
hey Joe, how much would you say is a reasonable action on a fingerstyle guitar? I've been struggling for a while trying to find the right action for me on my taylor without losing too much versatility out of it
Fantastic playing, Joe! I'm trying to get back into guitar after years of not playing and hoping to learn a lot from your channel and courses. Is there a name for the 12 bar blues tune at the beginning of this video? Seems like a good place to start!
Hey Joe (! lol) - do you ever make use of your 4th, i.e. your little finger? I'd be really curious, since I started to get mine used to serve as a fifth striking finger. Any recommendations or ecperiences with this one? Thanks mate! :)
Hey Joe, along with "Freight train" and "Windy and Warm" what other pieces would you chose or recommend for a "starter" fingerstyle repertoire, to build about a 10 song set? Thank you for all your videos and advices.
I have a Maton, I have the thumb pick and the 12-53 light-gauge strings. I've watched you, TE, and Emil explain the boom-chick thumb picking pattern over and over and have been trying to get it down for over a year. I think I've finally figured out that my brain and fingers aren't connected. Still love watching you play though. Keep the vid's coming!
Getting that thumb independence really takes quite a while, but keep working at it, cuz once you get it, it’s wonderful! Joe mentioned the first song is the hardest to learn, but it really does get better if you keep at it.
Michael Paling Thanks for the encouragement. My wife doesn't like Freight Train, so I've been working on Tommy Emmanuel's version of Deep River Blues. Cheers, Doug
Great insights Joe, loving these! Do you teach some of these tunes in a separate “ slower” version? I’ve played for years but not finger style and I really want to get good at it. Thx!
Great video. I am struggling with writing notes and tabs. How do you write? Just by hand? Do you use midi converters to record midi that you play? Is there an easier way than hand writing?
Thanks Joe! We saw you at Fitzgeralds in Chicago nearly a year ago. Your music is very inspiring and motivating me to take my 3rd go at learning and playing guitar. Tips like this make me think I can get it to stick this time. Hope to see you on the road again soon!
I'm an old dog, but trying hard to start learning some new tricks. This had been helpful, for sure. I will take in what ever I can to help myself. It's not about being crowd pleaser but learning something new always makes me feel a little inspired to keep moving forward no matter how slow. We need to start somewhere, action speaks louder than words. Thanks for the tips

Joe Bluesboy Robinson. Great advice Joe and fantastic finger picking style.
So glad that I recently found you on TH-cam. Great lesson and tips. Totally blow away by your versatility and incredible technique. Thank you so much.
Sir, so you're recommending to arrange in key of E so that I can use those open strings E and A to mute pick?

Hi Joe, how do you get low action? By adjusting the truss only, or also by adjusting the height of the bridge? Thanks!
The truss rod only adjusts the neck relief, when I take my guitar to my luthier, they'll cut the nut and saddle to get the action just right. They will also dress the frets and make sure the neck is straight. Highly recommend taking your guitar to a good luthier, it's very much an art and science!!
Thank you! I just bought a EBG808C Nashville
I have a question brother, Every time that I'm playing I made a mistakes that make me annoying and much afraid about concert. What should I do?
Any amp/pedal to recommend? 😁

Baby’s Coming Home, Jiffy Jam, Doc’s Guitar are all great. Check out my TrueFire channel - I have tutorials and TAB for these

I just type it into Guitar Pro. But there may be a better way to do it
great tips, anyway what brand string do you use? is it bright or warm type?thanks
I use D’addario EJ16 for acoustic, replacing the high E with a 0.14
Thanks 😎🎸
Thanks a lot for the lesson, it really helps
Amazing, you're a huge player
What is the model of the guitar? What is the brand?
Maton Guitars! The model is the JR Signature
@@Joe_Robinson Thank you friend, you are truly rare, a perfect guitarist! Good luck with everything
Thanks!
Its not easy just like my fave song
Awesome man.
thanks a lot for this
GREAT story - still see of Tommy E in your playing!
What is your guitar action at the 12th fret?
I don’t know the measurement, but it is as low as it can be without too much buzzing
Ace content Joe, liked, subbed and rung the bell!
Thanks Nelson!
Can you please type the second song (after Freight Train) that you mentioned. Could not catch it. Thanks. Great stuff, as usual.
Sure thing Louie - that's Windy & Warm
@@Joe_Robinson I was so lucky that this was the first fingerstyle I liked and tried to learn :) perfect for beginners

This video has been a real shot in the arm Joe ....what do you know 😊
Just ordered four of Daniel’s books
Enjoy, they are fantastic 👍🏻
Joe: set the guitar up so you don't have to fight it.
Also Joe: plays 14s
Being loose is underrated.
