  • Can a quilt be made into a coat or jacket? Yah, you betcha! In this demonstration video I show you how I transformed a thrift store quilt into a beautiful jacket by using an existing coat as a pattern. I also explain tips and tricks of upcycling clothing, repurposing quilts and reusing fabrics. Journey with me as I problem solve and discover a secret hidden treasure in the quilt I upcycle. Explore ways to adapt sewing patterns and work through making mistakes while upcycling a sewing project. Discover some of my favorite sewing, quilting and upcycling tools. My biggest hope is that you will have fun while being inspired to do your own creating.
    If you have any questions at all about upcycling, quilting or sewing, let me know in the comments! I’d love to answer them for you. Here at Artfully Sew, don’t worry about sewing perfectly. Get creative by experimenting and just keep sewing. You CAN Artfully Sew!

    Very creative! I worked in a fabric store during the early '70s. The peak of the "polyester double knit" Era. I cut miles of that stuff . . . I know there are millions of polyester quilts! Love what you did to rescue, reuse and repurpose!

    Your coat turned out sew cute. Who would have known that you can turn an ugly quilt into an adorable coat. I love that you used the bedsheet as a lining. We had some sheets very similar to that when I was a kid in the late 1970's or early 1980's. Great job on your up-cycle.

    In the 80's many quilters, like myself, made ugly quilts for the homeless. We used simple designs and polyester fabric because we wanted the quilts to hold up and not be sold. Many times a quilt like the one you found would provide shelter, warmth and in the eye of the beholder, care.

    • @ArtfullySew
      @ArtfullySew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Polyester is so durable! I use the word "ugly" but I do find them beautiful too. How wonderful that you gave to those in need, I'm sure the recipient was so thankful. I wish the quilt could talk so we could know it's journey!

    Just came across your channel and I had to say both Nora and the jacket are beautiful.
    Where I live it's a dead zone for crafts. I knit then a few years ago started teaching myself quilting. I phoned a children's hospital and offered to send them some items, to be told sorry can't take them the same with our local hospital and homeless shelter. It's nothing to do with covid. I live in a small country
    of the far western corner of Europe.

    • @ArtfullySew
      @ArtfullySew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, Janet. I’m not sure how it works in Europe, but there is an organization in the states called Project Linus that makes quilts for those in need. If not available in your area, maybe you could start something similar? Good luck and just keep sewing! www.projectlinus.org/

    My mom made a gazillion of those quilts. They were her favorite to make - so much so, that when she passed a few years ago at the age of 100, I placed her favorite one on her so she would be cozy. I hope you remade the original jacket you used for the pattern to fit you. The quilted jacket turned out really cute and looks really good on your daughter.
