- The residents of Hikkim-a high-altitude village in India’s Himalayas-don’t have cell reception, or internet access. But they’ve got mail. The tiny village is home to the world’s highest post office. Rinchen Chhering has been the devoted postmaster since it opened in 1983. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night keeps Chhering from getting to work every day.

That's not a passport but a passbook. India Post provides banking facilities like a savings account. The passbook issued by India Post is one where a person's account details, transactions and balances are recorded. In such remote areas, without banks, India Post is both a postal service as well as a banking service.

This post office has become a tourist spot now . Biker travelling towards ladakh from manali stops in kaza and go to this post office to post letters from there.

I had the pleasure of meeting this sweet, amazing guy. I was writing post cards for my friends outside the post office feeling cold and he saw me shivering and gave me tea to help the cold and told me about how he goes on about his job.

I have been there and posted a letter for my home. Amazingly, it didn't took as much time to deliver the post. It was such a great feeling to be posting a letter from world's highest post-office - Hikkim. :)

I was there four years ago, but I didn't talk to him. I did talk to some monks nearby, who gave me food and soap for my hike. I put up my tent 5 minutes away from that post office :D

Isn't the post office at Mt Everest's Base Camp, in China, the highest in the world? It has an altitute of 5,200mts.
Chinese one is more of a tourist attraction, you can only send postcards. This one on the other hand is a fully functional one that also serves people from nearby village.

It is surprising that there is no snow at an altitude of 4440 meters. Even if it’s summer.
Tropic of Cancer passes through the country due to which Himalayas are ever growing else snow at huge heights starts weathering the rocks. Almost No snow in summer but it can be tough in winter.
actually, spiti(the region shown in video) is a cold desert, the precipitation itself is less there. The normal snowline in other regions of Himalayas is around 3600 m, but in spiti it is a bit higher

Given that 4440m is only slightly higher than the highest airport in the world (Daocheng Yading, 4411m), I suspect there must be post offices higher than that.
In comparison, this makes me wonder if there's a wealthier more connected place I could be living in.

At around 1:56 in the video it's pronounced as passport which isn't right. It's pass book. The red color book is a passbook issued by the post office.

Wrong, highest post office is in China, Mt. Everest base camp, 5200m above sea level.
@John Sun You can't send anything *_to_* Everest Base Camp. It's just a tourist attraction set up to sell and send postcards from Everest. The gent in this video sends and receives mail which he distributes to the village. It's an actual working post office. That's most likely why Hikkim is regarded as the highest P.O.
