    A solution to resolving an Xbox 360 Slim ground-fault. Reset your Xbox360 Slim to get rid of the Red Dot Error.. If the red-dot error occurs when you place your hard drive in, you may have a bad SATA cable or bad hard-drive. Solution: Replace the SATA cable or use a computer to backup your data to a new hard-drive and replace the hard-drive.
    Check these thing prior to following the repair in this video:
    Check to see if the hard drive is at fault is by removing the hard drive and then reboot the Xbox. If the Xbox boots up with a green light and you have an Xbox 360 boot screen and then the dashboard, then you know the hard drive was at fault. If you've removed the hard drive and then rebooted and you see a red dot, then you know the hard drive is not at fault. If you're not getting a green boot you may have to replace the CPU paste. If you've already replaced the heat-sink CPU paste then boot problems may have arisen from a bad Microsoft update or maybe even a bad power brick; check the power bricks light during a boot to see if it turns red; if it does, the power brick may be the culprit. Other things that can cause a red dot are bad cables. Bad HDMI, Bad component cables or even bent HDMI pins in the rear of the Xbox-360 where the HDMI is connected, also bent USB pins inside the USB port, which can also cause a ground fault and a red-dot.

    amzn.to/37tuEs8
    Things to consider when this video doesn't lead to a successful repair:
    1.) Heat Sink paste is a slightly viscous material that comes in a tube that is used to allow efficient even heat transfer from one object to another without burning both objects, just like when one uses cooking oil to fry food. The cooking oil allows efficient even heat transfer between the heated pan & the food in the pan with burning it.
    2.) If no thermal paste is used, then heat cannot flow from one metal object to the next metal object efficiently. Excessive heat build-up can occur between the 2 metal objects (heat-sink & CPU) and you can expect a fire to occur inside the Xbox and damage to your CPU/GPU. Heat must flow from one object to the next without a buildup in heat in one particular area, and then blown out of the case to remove the heat from the inside of the Xbox towards the outside environment
    3.) If your reset doesn't work and your Xbox still gets the red dot. Is there anything else [you] can try?
    3a.) You could try a different power supply or replace yours if it has a red-light. You need to make sure you've replaced the old heat-sink paste with new paste after you've cleaned off the old. You can try running a heat gun over both sides of the board and let cool down before testing.

    4. You can check the USB ports front and rear for bent or twisted pins touching the inside of the USB port. Unplug the Xbox and use a small tool to bend the pins away from touching the inside of the USB metal chamber. If the USB port appears unusable you can fill the chamber with hot glue from a hot glue gun ($3 at the dollar store). Only do this after you've confirmed that the pin correction was the problem and that you're Xbox powers up without the red dot.
    5. Check the HDMI for bent pins and bend back or just uses AV or Component cables for an alternative video source. Components and HDMI give near identical video quality to the naked eye.

    Donte, thank you for posing this. I had the red dot of death on my Xbox 360 slim and EVERYONE told me to toss it and buy another one. I figured I'd at least TRY to fix it before kicking it to the curb. I did EXACTLY what you suggested and it works like a charm now. I did, however, had to refer to another tutorial to find out exactly where and how to apply the heat sync paste. But, other than that, your video blessed me and my kiddos. My only hope is that this fix is a long term one. Thanks again sir!

      I have a Slim that I think has two separate issues.
      When I first got it, it wasn't reading disks. After going through the troubleshooting steps, I diagnosed that it had to do with my Wired controller being plugged into the usb port. After unplugging it, and rebooting the system, it read games normally.
      Now I have another problem. I can get it to turn on, and boot up, but it's difficult, it keeps flashing off and on, and if I keep it powered, it'll just keep cycling indefinitely.
      The touch power button on the front isn't immediately responsive, it's either delayed in responding to my commands, or ignoring me completely and just doing what it wants.
      There isn't stray air hitting the censor, and after turning off virtually all of my other electronics, I don't think it's interference.
      I know it's not the power supply, as I've tried three.
      I did recently install a new fan, as the one it came with sounded noisy, but I don't see how it could force the censor on the face plate to fail. What's more, the censor was finicky even before I installed it, so at worst I think it's only exacerbated a pre-existing issue.
      Also, it's not reading discs again, even without anything plugged into the USB ports.
      In regards to the power issue, can you figure what's going on?

    • @Romerro1
      @Romerro1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol. I can try. As for the power on issue. There is a ribbon that plugs into the frontal board behind the front plate. At times it can become damaged/Ripped if your not careful. Check it for damage. Replacement cables can be purchased on Amazon. As for the other power on issues, check all the USB ports for bent in pins. Check the video ports for bent pins.

      +Donte Beachem (Romerro) Donte, the "red dot" fix you suggested still works to this day. Although I now have a new problem I hope you can help me with. I tried to connect my xbox to xbox live. I turns out that that was a grave mistake. After I connected to my home wifi, it said that I needed an update in order to connect to xbox live. When I clicked for the update it gave me an error status code. Here's what it reads. "System Update Stopped. Can't read the update fro your storage device. Please reinsert it to continue the update. If the problem persists, visit www.xbox.com/support. Status Code: 43C5-445E-2780-0F00-C000-0034". I've restarted this thing several times. And each time I get the Xbox intro, the update status bar (which doesn't go very far), then the status code page. All of this by just turning on the console. I can't get to the home page or dashboard or anything. The confusing part is that I don't have a storage device. My xbox is the cheapest of the chickens with no storage. Maybe it comes with a few gig but nothing more than that. I called xbox support and I've tried all their tricks. Nothing works. They suggest I send in my xbox 360 slim for them to fix it, but I don't want to do that. At this point I'm guessing that I need to take it apart again and somehow reboot this thing. Can you tell me how to reboot this? Do you have any suggestions?

    The steps in the video only work for those that have had a ground fault occur to the XBOX 360 SLIM or even the Xbox 360, of which the Xbox didn't self correct after the ground fault was removed (metal on the board or incorrect placement of the hard-drive) or the conditions changed, such as you removed the Xbox from an outlet that has over-current. Your Red-Dot error may be caused by another factor such as hard-drive placement or hardware malfunction; usually parts on the board, such as capacitors or chips. Keep in mind that ground-faults are suppose to be a good thing. It removes current to vital sections so that the entire Xbox doesn't become damaged, but just until the damaged area is repaired; then current is supplied to the rest of the board making your Xbox function once again..

    Hey man, great video! Thank you for explaining clearly and carefully; I'm happy to have found your video!
    My question is this: what exactly are the symptoms that point directly to a bad SATA cable? I ran my 320 HD on my buddy's slim and it works fine; I tried his HD on my system and its gives me a red dot or freezes on the Xbox startup screen (all distorted and messed up). Sometimes my HD will work, but then it goes super SLOW when navigating through my Xbox menu (system settings especially) and then eventually freezes.
    I now ordered a new SATA cable since I found that the red wire that goes from the hard drive to the mother board fits pretty loosely.
    I have yet to receive the new SATA cable, but should it not work, what's my next step to diagnose the issue? The receiving connector that takes the red cable from the HD to the MB looks like it's a tad loose But all the solder looks solid.
    The Xbox runs PERFECT during regular gameplay without the HD, but it only acts up with my HD.
    Thank you kindly for any help or anyone else experience in this area.
    Cheers!

      Mark Henry Cooney You could have just purchased it in the store at GameStop. There are no other solutions to this problem, except an Xbox firmware update which requires you to be connected to Xbox Live silver or gold account. Maybe the power cable. +V Vermuyten Hey V. If your Xbox started to work it may just need a few checks and possibly an extra step. Check that your power supply is not turning red when u power on your Xbox. Also remove your hard drive, if you have one, and try booting the Xbox. If none of these are working, be sure to change the CPU paste, if you already, haven't. Replacing the CPU paste is one of the most important steps to the reset. If your reset works, you need the CPU to have proper heat transfer to your heatsink in order to maintain proper cooling of the processor dies. If at the end of this and your Xbox reddots again, your final step will be to run a heat gun over both sides of the board. Don't skip any of the things I've mentioned here or things will not work. Good luck.

      +V Vermuyten Ok, so I replaced the thermal paste and put the heatsink + x clamp back on the motherboard (no screws). After that I connected the power cable + hdmi and tried to let it overheat but it shuts down after 5 minutes and I get the "Your xbox is shutting down to prevent overheating" message. Do you think that was enough to let it reset?

    How do you know when it has reset? My red light went from solid, to blinking. I plugged my fan back in, and nothing. Still as solid red light. I am not sure that it fully reset. Also, how long should I expect it to take? Thanks for all your great info and help. You are the only one I have found addressing RROD on a slim.

    I'm sorry to hear that Te Roe.. If it did not work then your ground fault still exist. You may need to have someone determine what your ground-fault is and repair it. Sometimes there can be debris on the board, dried solution containing ionic material, from a spill, which may allow charges to jump or bridge contact points. Try cleaning the board with 90% alcohol with a soft toothbrush. Inspect the entire board top and bottom with a magnifying glass with the heat sink removed. (you don't want to miss anything because its covering the problem). After you clean repeat again as it was instructed in the video. Also, my apologies for taking so long to respond.

    • @Romerro1
      @Romerro1  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your xbox-slim did not power back on after the reset, you will require a heat gun to go over the top and bottom of the board and then reset. Watch the video for some brief instructions referencing how long to apply the heat to both sides, including the cool down requirement..

      Donte Beachem What is a CPU paste remover? Kindly explain to me that please...

    • @Romerro1
      @Romerro1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a medium that goes between the CPU and heat sink. It allows for sufficient heat transfer from the CPU to the heat sink then out if the Xbox case via the fan. The paste is added so that during the heat exchange the 2 metals do not burn. It's like when u cook a steak. If u add heat without a medium, such as water, grease or butter the steak will burn the outer skin before heat will have the time to flow through the entire steak and cook it. Add grease, water or butter and heat flows evenly throughout the entire steak and cooks the meat. Without CPU paste most if the heat would stay in the CPU and damage it. You don't want that.

    hi i have a black xbox 360 slim when i turn it on it goes from green to red dot. the fan starts for like 5 seconds then stops and nothing happens. red dot just stay thers and i took it apart and diconnected the fan pluged power cord in to let overheat and it never overheated it went on for over a hour sitting on the red light what should i do? o and i dont have a harddrive for it either

    • @Romerro1
      @Romerro1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adrian Edwards if yours does not over heat then there's possibly a problem with your power brick or non-functioning CPU. Check to see if you have a red light on your power brick. Try a different power brick.

      @Romerro1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I'm sorry that it wasn't enough to help you repair your Slims. So many others have used this solution to fix or repair otherwise dead or just non-functioning Slims. I've even heard from some that have used this method to repair their 360's. I have heard that there's a possibility, that because of this video, Microsoft put out a Slim patch to keep the 360 slims from even operating or supplying power to the CPU when the fan is disconnected. I don't know of any truth behind it but it's a possibility. Someone else stated that they left the fan plugged in, since there was hot glue placed over the fan plug to prevent unplugging and they stuck a pencil in the fan to keep it from moving, which allowed over heating of the processor. I am not suggesting this at all, since it would could possibly damage the fan. Anyway, I hope you find a used Xbox Slim or an Xbox one so that you can continue to indulge in the gaming experience like the rest of us enjoy.

    I don't like the term "reset" used in this context. This is nothing more than overheating the Xbox with the hope the solder beneath the problem component reflows itself. What's happening in this scenario is the solder has cracked due to the heating up and cooling down over time. Newer lead free solder is less tolerant to this. The original fat Xboxes were horrible in this regard, but as the newer 360 consoles are more reliable than the originals, it shows improvements in manufacturing and engineering can happen. The clamp modifications are similar in that it's a hope of a fix. You're just applying more pressure on a component like the cpu/gpu to try and close gaps or cracks in the failed solder hoping the connection will be fixed.
    These fixes may help you, but they're more like bandaids and how long they last is always a question. If after trying this you still have trouble, locate a knowledgeable person with proper solder reflow services. That's your best bet for a lasting repair and likely what MS does.
    I came to this video expecting a reset similar to resetting the check engine light in a car. This is not "resetting" anything.

    • @Romerro1

      Follow the video to repair or 1st check that your power brick doesn't have a red light. It may need to be replaced if it does or there are voltage problems. The red Dot can also be caused by USB pins touching each other or touching the metal housing. The red Dot can also occur if the HDMI pins are bent and touching the housing or another pin

    • @Romerro1
      @Romerro1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The other thing you can try is the optional part of this video if the reset doesn't work which is heating the main board with the heat gun on both sides. Refer to the video for instructions.

    • @Romerro1
      @Romerro1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you go through this forum, which is extensive, you'll find that a large percentage of people have repaired their Xboxs over the years and some have failed and some didn't do everything I suggested in the video and them claimed it didn't work. I know because I've asked them specifically to lay out all their completed steps. They usually all leave out the heat gun board heating, otherwise just called heating of the PCB. Although this is an optional step, it is necessary if the processor reset doesn't work. So good luck with your reset.

    hello i have a problem with my 250gb hard drive, it keeps making this small ringing sound from time to time, it started to happen 3 days ago. i dont exactly know what happend, as i was at work at the time and my wife was watching netflix on it, and out of no where it started making this small ringing noise. it did end up getting the Red ring of death a few times along with the E 68 error code on the black screen, i read on a few websites it could be a defective hard drive but im not sure why since i have had my xbox 360 slim for about 2 years and had no problem with it untill 3 days ago when it started making the small ringing noise. i took my xbox 360 slim apart and checked everything and cleaned it out, and determined that its coming directly from the hard drive. i have no idea what the small ringing noise means, the hard drive works from time to time, but the small ringing noise starts up when the home screen appears, when im playing a game, watching movies on netflix, pretty much doing anything on it. im not sure if the hard drive is defective or if the connectors for it are defective. please help

You can always check apps like offer up or wallipop to purchase use items from people near you or even purchase a new one, then return it later if your funds are short.

      Donte Beachem Hey, I can't figure out how to take the Heat Sync off the back of the motherboard.. Can you help?

    • @Romerro1
      @Romerro1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you have the metal case removed from the plastic case, you need to remove all the screws from the bottom of the metal case containing the main circuit board, aka the motherboard, then remove the wife antenna; it has a screw holding it down. Grab the heat sink and fan with one hand and pull it up and out of the case. Next you need to Remove the x-clamp from the bottom of the board holding down the heat sink. After x-clamp removal, you'll need to try and pry the heat sink off of the processor. It can be of there pretty tight from the hardened paste or it might just come right off with ease.

      Donte Beachem Awesome thank you! Also did you read the other comment I posted on your video? This is it.. "OK, so here is my deal.. I turned it on one morning to play, and my account was not there. So I went to download the account, and it said some type of error. Then all of a sudden it shut my xbox on and showed a red dot. I unplugged and plugged back in, but it wouldn't turn on. When I try to turn it on, it makes the "beep", but doesn't power on. This is two months later, and I watched your video, and tore it all down, but I don't know exactly what the problem is.. Can you help me?"

    hello Donte thank you for the informative videos, they are very much appreciated. I have a 4gb slim and i downloaded the update for minecraft and played it for about 20 minutes then i shut it down. 4 days later i went to start it up (during a bad storm) and i signed in, and got the usual "having trouble connecting to xbox live" message, so i went to run the diagnostics and got half way through the tests and the screen went all grey black checkered and made a horrible static sound and i shut it off. i waited about 5 minutes and started it, it went to the sign in screen and it did the same thing accompanied by a red dot, i shut it off waited about a half hour tried it again and this time, no screen no sound and the green dot turned red after about 8 seconds. i went through all the suggestions on the xbox site with no avail. i took it into my brother and we tried his cords with no result. One odd thing is when my brother went to remove and reinstall the hard drive there wasn't one, is this odd? i plan to do the re-paste, but i was wondering if you had any thoughts or suggestions on my specific situation? thank you very much, Rhonda

    Disassembled the thing, cleaned it thoroughly (including the old thermal paste from the CPU and heat sink), applied new paste, now the console won't power on at all, so I have no idea if I can even reset the board.

      Marlon Heijerman Good job Marlon. That usually gets the job done when the basic reset solution doesn't solve your total problem.

    It worked for me. Cleaned the Xbox disconnected the fan and switched on the console for 20 min, switched it off and plugged in the fan and it came on. Been playing Tomb raider for an hour now. Hopefully it'll come on tomorrow again.

      No. It just resets the CPU. You have to force that to go.

    Dude, some pretty good info but did I hear you suggest using alcohol to clean the motherboard? Bad advice bro' because all motherboards and graphics cards are manufactured with a thin protective coating that is meant to help avoid deep scratche4s. A deep scratch can possibly break a circuit and then you'd be screwed. Using alcohol causes the coating to falter. The very best method is using a compressed can of air or an air compressor .Years of computer servicing is my reference.

    HELP PLEASE? When I turn mine on after like 5 seconds it gets the red dot and nothing shows on the tv. The other day I left it unplugged 8 hours, went to work came back plugged it in and it worked. While I was playing it, it kept making the beep noise it makes when you open the tray (still kept playing FIFA with no problems just that beep noise every 2 min). When I finish playing after like 40 minutes I turned it off and didn't play until the next day. Well the next day I turned it on and the same problem again (red dot after 5 seconds/nothing on TV. Tried the whole "leave it unplug for a few hours and plug it back in process", and it work one time again but it only took me to the xbox intro before going to the dashboard and it froze there but the dot stayed green. Since it froze I turned it off and on again and BAMM red dot again. Any help would be greatly appreciate it. My power brick's light is orange but goes green when I power xbox on. It's a 250gb xbox slim. I can hear hear the fan turning even though it's has the red dot.

    How do you remove the metal x bracket that holds heat synk the metal piece to get to CPU on the opposite side of my mother board there's a metal x bracket preventing me from getting to the under side of my heat synk. I'm having the red ring I think partly due to needs cleaning and I modder in a game did something to my Xbox or hard drive, trying to repair myself its not within warranty and don't have much money to get a new one.

      Jonathan Rawls Ok Jonathan, I don't really give out instructions on removing X-Clamps because of the users (you) potential to scrape and damage the board. Microsoft has specialized tools in order to remove the clamp. But fear not.! Just do a TH-cam search on "how to remove an X-Clamp" and you will find plenty of videos on how to complete this task. Good Luck..

    Awesome and informative video on how the process works. But... I currently have one of mine taken apart because of the red dot and I cleaned off the dry thermal paste from the processor and heatsink. I just ran the heat gun over the CPU (then let it cool off) and applied new thermal paste and reattached the heatsink and xclamp. I powered up the console without the fan being plugged in and it gave me a green dot for a few seconds and then it turned red. How long should I wait to hook up the fan and the other peripherals? (In hindsight I know I should've waited on the thermal paste. But will it still work?)

    • @Romerro1
      @Romerro1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Lord it should still work but the wait time is about 30mins.

    • @mylord611
      @mylord611 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Donte Beachem Thanks for getting back. I was able to reflow the whole board with the heat gun and it's worked fine ever since.
