  • Tis is a video on how to Fix your XBOX 360 that has any of the Red Rings, This does not fix the E-68 because that is a HDD problem. In this video, I go step by step in dis-assembly to cleaning and heat treating the board, to applying therman compound and re-assembly.
    TOOLS:
    Small Flat Head Screwdriver
    T-10 and T-8 Tork Screwdriver
    Rubbing Alcohol and WD-40
    Thermal Compound
    Heat Gun
Something to Pry with for X-Clamps
    Cotton Balls or Cu-Tips
Step 1: Take a Small Flat Head Screwdriver and after removing the front panel, take the screwdriver and pop out the grey or black if its an Elite, side panels by releasing the pins shown in the video
Step 2: Using the same small Flat Head Screwdriver, on the back of the XBOX you will see 7 slots, those slots contain clips that need to be pushed in. Use the flat head to push these in and relieve the clips and the XBOX will pop open on the back side, then relieve the clips on the front with either the screwdriver or your fingernails and the bottom of the XBOX casing will come off.
Step 3: Take the T-10 Tork screwdriver and remove the 6 long screws and the 9 short screws holding the motherboard in place. Then take the T-8 Tork screwdriver and remove the 8 X-Clamp screws. Flip the XBOX over and remove the top panel of the casing.
Step 4: Now remove the disk drive by lifting up on the back and the front and then unplug the power and the sata cable. Also take out the white ventilation for the heat syncs by using a flat head screwdriver to pop the pin in the center down and pull it out. Also unplug the fans.
Step 5: The main panel on the front of the XBOX has the white flap on it, remove the top firs and then slide it down and off, remove the 3 screws with a T-8 Tork screwdriver and then pull out the board. Once that is done, lift up on he front of the main board and slide it out forward.
Step 6: Take the pry tool that you have selected and place it in between the X-clamp and where screw goes and push down towards the board so that you lift up the X-clamp, then simply pry on the sides of the joints and remove the X-clamps and the heat syncs and now you have just the board.
Step 7: Take either Alcohol or WD-40 to clean off the Heat syncs and the processors with a cotton ball or cu-tip. If using WD-40, wipe down with Alcohol after.
Step 8: Heat Treat the board with a Heat Gun, Preheat the board for about 2:30 minutes to 4:00 minutes, Then with a circular motion heat up the CPU and GPU for about 5:00 minutes, Then re-heat the board for about another 2:30 to 4:00 minutes so it cool evenly and let the board cool for about 1 to 2 hours minimum.
Step 9: Once the Board has cooled down, Clean the Processors on last time with Alcohol and then apply Thermal Compound for a layer just on top of the chips.
Step 10: Place the heat syncs on at a time on the board, I recommend doing the Square one first, place it on the board and flip it over, heat sync to the table and apply pressure to the board, take an X-clamp and place two of the clamps by just sliding them on then using the pry tool, pry the other two clamps into place and wait till you hear them click. do the same with the other heat sync.
Step 11: Take the white ventilation plastic piece and place it into place on the board, then take the disk drive and plug in the power and sata cables and put the drive into place, plug in the fans and then take the top of the XBOX panel and place it on and flip the XBOX over showing where the screws go. Take the 9 shorter screws and screw them in with a T-10 Tork and the 8 x-clamp screws with a T-8 Tork screwdriver. Flip it back over and remove the top panel again.
Step 12: Take the front power board and place it into place and screw in the 3 screws with a T-8 Tork, after that place the white flap with the arrows pointing up back on bottom first and then put the top exterior panel back on. Flip the XBOX over and screw in the 6 long screws to hold the top panel in place.
Step 13: Put the Disk driver button back into place and be sure it clicks, then take the bottom exterior panel and place it on front first and it should just click into place, on the back push it in and then press against the back of the XBOX until they all click into place. Put the side panels on and then test out your now fixed XBOX 360

My dad and I spent some time together fixed my RRODed Xbox 360, following to the letter this guys instructions. I thought MAYBE a 50/50 chance it'll work and he thought it wasn't going to happen. (BTW, before you make a trip to the store, you need a T-8 screwdriver, too). Anyway, we did it, turned it on and everything worked as normal. Awesome video. Thank you!!

Rob, it's 5 years later, but your video helped me, I hadn't turned on my 360 in probably over a year, and when I turned it on, 3 flashing red lights.
I was able to rip apart the 360 last night, clean processors, heat it up with heat gun, bought some new thermal compound today, applied compound, reassembled, like new!
    Cheers

Tried this fix step for step on my 360 which hadn't been working since 2010. Worked like a charm and she's good as new now. For anyone that might have a similar problem when I first put it back together I never had the bigger box shaped heat sink screwed in tightly enough, and started getting two red rings and the 360 would shut down shortly after startup. Took it apart again and made sure it was screwed in very tight and it worked fine. Thanks a lot man

Very good video. Well spoken, clear and concise instruction, and the video was edited so he isn't sitting there heating the board for minutes while whistling or or awkwardly talking like a tool. Taught me how to gut the 360, clean it, and put it together again. Fixed 1 of my rrod 360s yesterday while watching this video, will fix the other in the near future. Keep up the good work dude!

My XBox had the RROD and I called a local shop to see how much they'd charge to fix it and they told me it'd cost about $80+ tax to fix and I wouldn't be able to get it back for about a week and a half. So, instead of that bull crap I looked at a few vids and came across your's, I followed your instructions step by step, after watching your vid a few times and let me tell you it works good as new. I spent approximately $5 which was for the isopropyl alcohol and the thermal paste. Thanks man!!!

Just wanted to say that I bought an Xbox 360 RROD off eBay for £30.00.
I followed this video and it works like new!!!!
My tips - I set a timer for the heatgun part for 10 mins. I heated the board for about 2 mins all over, then just on the main chips for five mins. Cooled for three mins gently. Left it for an hour and a half.
Gunk from the old heat sink was removed by spraying a cloth with WD40 and gently rubbing - not directly.
    Used gold heatsink paste.
    Thanks dude! You rock!

    Hi Rob,
Thanks for your excellent instructional video! Your procedure worked for my 2008 XBOX 360. Before the fix it was giving the three red lights. I used thermal paste I had laying around from old projects (Stars Cooler Paste). The only problem I had was I made some scorch marks on the wooden table I layed the circuit board on when I was heating it. A little sanding will correct that. Thanks again for posting the procedure.

I think this really depends on your Xbox, mine is a 2005 model and I've had this done 4 times in the 4 years that I've had it. It works very well but only for about a year to the day of the repair (most recently it RROD again after an update) it doesn't matter if it's used a lot or not, I can actually put an RROD mark on my calendar lol I love the fact that you go step by step, know all the sizes of what you need and exactly what you need. It's very informative and thorough. Great job :)

This is a fantastic fix it took me about 3 hours start to finish it took longer to let the mother board to cool off then do the actual work and I had none of the tools when I started and the heat gun the t8 and t10 torks bits and the thermal compound cost me about 45 bucks at radio shack. thanks for the fix I will surely pass this one on

Thanks man, very informative! I recently replaced the DVD drive in my 360 because the old one was no longer reading games, but since then the fans would just start running really fast for no reason after I turn it on and just let it sit there. I was thinking it has something to do with the heatsink and hopefully this will fix the issue. You are very funny too lol

One suggestion: I found that the xclamps can be taken off much easier with a pair of needlenose pliers. Stick them in near where they clamp onto the tips from the heatsyncs, and rotate your wrist while squeezing. The xclamps pop right off, and this way you don't need to worry about warping them. Also saves you from the possibility of scratching the board with the screwdriver.

I did this and it worked!!!! For a week, then the 3 lights came back suddenly. Sooooo, tried it again, heat treated a little longer and hotter this time, and it’s working again!!! Let’s see for how long. My kid loves the old Xbox so hopefully for a while lol. We do have another one, but it has open tray issues and only reads games when it’s in the mood.

Nice for the one with the tray issue there’s a little rubber band in the tray that gets work out over time to control the tray itself that can cause an issue that can be replaced, the other thing is that the motor could be bad and if the tray in the red light Xbox is the same model in the other one you can swap the drives and swap the board on them and it will work
