Lionel Messi left the Copa America final with a non contact ankle injury and had some pretty bad swelling right away.

Mad respect 😮
😂😂😂😂
He hurt his ankle towards the end of the first half. He tried giving it a go in the second half
That halftime show didn’t do him any favor. Once that ankle rolled over and got injured. Need to keep the mobility going for the fluids. Once you cool off then it becomes big and huge. Halftime show was like 20 minute delay.
Was it the same ankle? I didn’t notice
His ankle looked pretty swollen already when he got injured in the 1st half.
@@javierlandaverde4108not exactly... That swelling is a massive talocrural joint effusion, probably from a torn deltoid ligament, possibly from some of the other structures mentioned. You're going to get that massive swelling no matter what you do - mobility *might* help to control it a bit, but unlikely it would do anything of significance. You can always try to maintain compression to manage the swelling itself, but then it's going to cause a lot of pain from the increasing intracapsular pressure
@@harv83damn ! Do you think he will be out for more than a month ?
The injury occurred earlier in the game (first half). The play that is shown here as the injury, occurred later and it was Messi’s final play of the game.
I seen that too! Someone crossed him. He fell and they came to aid him. I think with so much adrenaline didn’t hurt as much, until he stretched it and damaged it more.
Yeah, his ankle been back under the other guys weight on tackle out of bounds.
That s what happened.
In the first half he put all his weight on his right ankle, in order to kick with his left foot (where the tackle occurs) but his right ankle gives in.... that's why he immediately grabs his right foot instead of the left, where he's kicked.... Messi never fakes fouls which is why I had to look several times at the play
And he got subbed off in the second half due to him that he couldn’t play
Wow you already made a video on this. Messi is massive 😂😂😂
This guy always gets videos out real quick tbh
Doc is always like this lol

The quickness is crazy
I believe this happened in the first half which is why the physios immediately said to sub him off because it was a reaggrevation of an original injury. You can see around the 33rd minute when he first bugged it that he also had excessive eversion on that cross as well.
Yea, that’s when the injury actually happened.

@@alosprayloYou don't have to be there.
Nah..Hard Rock Stadium is one of the few stadiums used in this tournament with a natural grass pitch. The ground was fine.
First time viewer, Messi certainly is something. The Messi effect in full force.
Messi's ankle was damaged earlier in the match, it wasn't that step that did it, it happened in an earlier tackle that forced him off the pitch for a few minutes
It wasn’t the tackle. It was the planting right foot that everted.
Here’s the play

But you are right. This video needs to be fixed and updated to the right info cause it’ll be much cooler with a more complex injury.
@@MovementMilo Come on, it is absurd to suggest that the tackle had no contribution. Whatever structure broke was likely struggling to maintain integrity until that eversion
@@thrilla72Yea, I think of the Porzingis injury video 6:41-he damaged a similar area (almost the same tendon??) and could move on it fine but at the risk of it ripping entirely. Seems like thats what happened when Leo went down untouched.

Exactly this doctor missed it completely.
@@wendellverli Guessing either someone sent him this clip from the late game injury or, like me, started watching well into the 2nd half. Now seeing the massive swelling and not-so-severe foot plant angle, definitely compromised earlier - certified YT doctor 😀
The world is analyzing every part of Messi's life while he's making history.🐐🤯
Man I still remember watching one of the first videos posted on this channel. I don't remember whose injury it was anymore but it was posted on the NBA sub on Reddit, and it was Brian himself who posted it there to attract some attention. And, man, it's obvious now what high quality content from the professionals can bring you and how far this channel has come.
Congrats, Doc! And here's looking forward to more wonderful content from you!
With the quickness
Due to my own injuries (Torn achilles 3x, torn acl and meniscus, torn hamstring, broken ankle, dislocated wrist and now 3 bulging discs, just to name a few); Dr Brian Sutterer has educated me in ways I never imagined. I understand so much more about my body and it's mechanics. I just started rebuilding again 4 months ago after we discovered the bulging discs. I actually shared one of your videos with my PT. It was the video about Ben Simmon's back. He loved it! That video helped us have some deeper conversations about my circumstances. Thank you for all your work. It does help many of us.
Damn dude. Hope youre get better

You should be Messi’s Doctor😂 LOL
It was a contact injury though. The initial injury was in the first half when the Colombian defender knocked him into the advertising boards. Also heads up if Messi to roll back on to the pitch to stop the game, otherwise they would of kept playing
Great win. Proud of Argentina...
It is also good to note that he suffered another injury in the same part of the same foot earlier in the game
Wow doc so quick 😂
Actually the foul was in the first half , however he continued to play even though he was in severe pain
He was injured even before this clip he pressed on regardless

The injury happened because of a tackle from a Colombian defender earlier in the game.
He didn’t get tackled but he was being pressured down the line.
It was a non contact. Here’s the play!

Hello Dr. Sutterer, I’m a huge fan of your channel. I just noticed that you analyzed the play in which he is subbed off but the main injury occurs in the first half of the game as he runs for a ball off the pitch. Similar to the video that you analyze he puts a significant amount of stress on the medial part of his ankle. It would be awesome if you could find that clip, it is around the 34 minute of the game where he initially gets injured. He is then taken out of the pitch and returns to the game for the remainder of the half but he limps the rest of the game. I think when he was subbed out he reaggravated the injury.
Dr. Brian uploading when Messi is still on the ground lol
Doc stays ready like he working in the ER 🫡
Damn! Brian don’t miss anything! Legend. Great video! 😮
SOMOS BICAMPEONES DE AMÉRICA PAPÁ, EL MEJOR DE LA HISTORIA SE VA A RECUPERAR Y LA HISTORIA VA A CONTINUAR...
Messi get well ❤️🩹 God bless ♥️🙏🕊️
Some people are saying it was during a different time in the game but that it was also non contact. There was a tackle where the opponent hit exactly that spot with the sole of the cleats so it also could’ve been that
Great explanation but the actual injury took place at around the 35th minute of the first half, what you are showing is the moment he collapsed after coming back with that swelling to the pitch and playing another 15 minutes in the second half! The GOAT!
Dr Sutterer with another fantastic video!
great video, even if you are missing the first injury, which was very simillar to the second one, that you are showing in this video
I had to subscribe cuz the doc was talking about the Greatest ever athlete.
Get well soon Messi
can't believe he was still playing🐐
Dr. You stayed ready! Haha impressive
Messi's ankle was hurt before the 40 min? mark not after HT. You can see when he cut with his right foot and the foot Eversioned right before the opposing player tackled him with the ball out of bounds. Commentators called it left ankle injury on the spot but was wrong. I don't have access to replay. He was down for a few mins and tried to walk it off and play but seems like he couldn't cut nor run hard. But def it was his right ankle that was injured. Even the ESPN commentators never showed his pre-HT injury; only the one after HT.
Messi jacked up his ankle in the first half trying to make a cut back pass near the end line.
thank you
@ Dr.Sutterer the initial injury occurred at 40ish minutes of the first half at the goal line.
Thank you ❤🎉
very informative video! Cheers!
At this rate Brian will eventually post a video talking about an injury that hasn't happened yet. It's just a matter of "when" rather than "if".
Great video again ,however 1:13 is not where he actually got injured ,there is a clear image of how badly he twisted his ankle while he was trying to cross the ball.
Look at the 35th minute of the match.
I think that will provide a much better image of the injury.
Thanks for the educative video again
Messi's injury occurred approximately 40 minutes into the first half.
Bro played until 20 minutes into the second half with his ankle like that.
Thank yu doc for the detailed info👍🏽👍🏽
I love your very informative videos
This has happened to me before. It swelled exactly the same.
He'll be completely fine.
Nice breakdown! I even learned that out ankles are very complex with tendons going every which way…😮
Damm Doc ! The fit today is 🔥
Right after he fell he started waving at the sidelines to come over quickly. He immediately knew something was wrong 😢
mind you, this non-contact injury, like you said, is somewhat serious. However, this injury was provoked in a contact injury in the first half. During half-time, they already considered subbing Messi but he wanted to play "until he dropped". Therefore, this non-contact injury is a moot point as something happened prior to this non-contact injury.
Thank you doctor!
I made a joke about an Instagram reel of someone kicking a rat into a kids face that I saw. So, I said "Damn that's a Messi kick." I had alerts on, and "Brian Sutterer" came on already with the Messi foot injury breakdown. Man, He's like a ninja I swear. ESPN also popped up the injury but as detailed as Brian's video is. Everything comes in 3s I guess. 😂
There was a previous play that ended with Messi rolling in pain, same ankle, I think that previous hit played a huge factor in the injury
Thankyou for explaining the injuries in your videos. I can relate to this video as I sprained my ankle 2 years ago but it was the outside of my ankle. Come to find out I tore my CFL and stretched my ATFL. I ended up needing surgery and had it done in April. I am currently in a boot and will start PT soon.
Bro behind you took his shirt off and put it back on... He play too much 😂
Great work thanks dr appreciated
Thanks for the explanation, we all care about the GOAT.
I blame the turf
yoooo this channel is quick
That's not what happened. He went back on the pitch and finished the first half. After halftime treatment and re-taping, he started the second half and eventually further sprained his medial compartment ligaments or strained the posterior tib tendon.
Yea the injury happened earlier before this.
This is the play.
th-cam.com/users/shortsheBl5n9Gj8Q?si=XC9RAmi6ddyLJdnq
Let’s ask the doc to update the video and this injury is more serious and more complex. Would make for a much cooler explanation!
You don't miss!
watching this at 5am from Argentina, damn you're fast lol
Had the same posterior tibial ligament rupture, never the same. Needed all-American surgery and had major atrophy. Neuromas, plantar fascia pretty much useless, favored knee is now worse off than bad leg from picking up the slack. After 15 years of competitive sports I’ve learned outer rolls are rudimentary compared to inner. Lateral ligament reconstruction is a walk in the park compared to posterior tibial reconstruction.
great explanation, thx!
The initial injury was at the end of the 1st Half at the goal line, this was what likely related to the initial injury
Good summer he will recover soon. Worst injury is midway January September April injuries cause of pressure. He will have good timing to recover
Woah that was a quick upload 😂😂 but let’s go Argentina champions again 🇦🇷💪🏽
He even got a sponsor for the video 💀
I love your videos thank you
The injury didn’t happen in that play, it was before that. He tried to keep playing through it and that’s when he noticed he couldn’t keep going
I just came back from this same injury took me 3 months and I was supposed to be done in 5 months 😬
I rolled the same right ankle, but the pain is between my ankle and toes, so from the looks, it's that tendent that wraps towards the toes. I'm 70% after a week and a half.
This guy is a fucking genius. I'm from Argentina, nobody is giving any details about this and this dude made the video as soon as he could?!
IMHO This is a year of rest for him, due to ligaments wreckage. I suffered something similar w years ago.
I got tickets to a Messi game in August. I’m here to see time he’ll be out. It’s a wrap :(
