Did a tube like this many years ago. Had a deep socket that was the perfect size, ground a long taper into the socket about half the length of the socket, put a wide hose clamp on either side of the dent to keep the tube from opening up, oiled the socket and inside the tube, slowly and lightly heated the tube with a plumbing torch and worked the socket in and out until the dent was gone. Took a while being careful but it was worth it and didn't even mess up the old patina. Good video, thank you.

Thanks a ton! Been waiting for this one since we chatted a short bit ago. I was aware of the sliding tool, used for shotgun barrels, but completely forgot about the seam on mag tubes. I'm trying to deal with the typical placement of a dent on my Granddad's M94 rifle circa 1905, an heirloom piece that I'd like to get fixed before I pass it on to my Grandson, who's expecting our first Great Grandson, who will be the sixth generation first born son since Granddad bought the piece. Hard to express how much I truly enjoy the way you present your shows! Always look forward to each one. Only downside is that I do get a mite envious of some of the "junkers" you've got laying around!

Howdy Mark, great video of what TO do and what NOT to do when dealing with this dented tubular magazines. You certainly have the professional touch! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! We have 4 Henrys and I've wondered how to fix a dent, although those are brass internal tube magazines. Subscribed some time ago, love watching all the info you give out freely!

An idea to keep the seam from opening! I would have wrapped a little electrical tape over the area and then put a hose clamp over it and tightened it accordingly. Me being a caveman may have even tried beating a wooden dowel though it to raise the dent from the inside.

As I mentioned, most dents happen between the hanger and the nose cap, and the tube can't be removed through the hanger. In those cases, the repair has to be made in the gun as I showed, and using hose clamps is not an option.

Thanks, Mark! Somebody, a hundred years ago or so, mangled the mag tube hanger severely on my 1892. I've been very reluctant to try removing the mag tube to remedy the dents. I sure don't want to make it worse! Thanks for the video!

Might? be worth trying covering a small hammer with cloth insulating tape, around here, but probably not universally, called 'Gaffer Tape'. At least in my application it is easier than chasing around card scraps. Lasts a while before wearing through to show the metal of the hammer. Removes fairly easily; theoretically white spirit or some kind of solvent could be used to remove any trace of adhesive, but I have never had a problem.
That was a top notch presentation.
    No reply expected.

That was a great demo of how to straighten a bent mag tube. That reflects your many years of experience. I have a Winchester clone in 22LR with the mag tube. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.

Put a hose clamp either side of the dent

Not had to rise a dent in mag tube but have repaired several shotgun barrels. I used sockets that would go under dent with a little force. Then after tapping, got it loose under dent, I would add tape to side of socket and keep going.

Fascinating. You certainly have an advantage with the ability to make your own custom tools, which relates to better gunsmithing. Thanks Mark.

Hi Mark, has anyone tried to make a rolling tool to use instead of a hammer? I was watching, and it came to me that a modified tool like a large tubing cutter (without a cutting blade of course) might roll the dents out. The mandrel would still be necessary, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried it that way?

Nice work, this is great content, Do you always lubricate a mandrel, I was taught when to do so to prevent galling?

Can't you make a tube to go over the tube so when you open up the dent the seam doesn't open up ?

Ok, im a newb. Been shooting all my life but never done any of the gunamithing part. Just an old wrench turner. My question, assuming you can get the tube free of its hanger, would it not be easier to have an appropriate size tube to sleeve over the top as well. That way when you push the dent out with your dowel, it would only allow it to spread back to the original size? Like i say, im not gunsmith. Dont laugh...too hard.

I know you said they made a repo mag tube but how about making one just like winchester did? I think it may be worth it? 🤔 I'm sure you have several reasons why that's not desirable?

  • @GeorgeT6566

What if you had a mandrel with a flat side to match the flat side of the tube. You would not have to worry so much about taking the flat out of the mag tube
