Haha let's not worry about showing our age... I think my love for Class 37s scuppered me on that one already. Thanks for watching another. It is much appreciated 👍
Great video as always! I really like the 185s (if they arrive!) - I think it sets the standard for what DMUs like the 170s, 158s, 168s etc should be like. Hopefully the class 168 refurbishment is like this! I do think the 185s are the best in TPEs fleet for passenger experience (Although I have a general grudge for the 80Xs so maybe I'm being biased, and haven't been on the Mk5s and 68s)
I travelled that line in 2018, so the same great scenery but a much older train. A day return from Scarborough to Liverpool. Coast to coast, just to say I'd done it. It was going to be a long trek, but the guy in booking office offered me split ticketing, and being able to break the journey at Leeds and Manchester for a leg-stretch and a bite to eat made all the difference. BTW. If you're interested, there's a couple of YT videos of the demolition of Lime Street. A good few years back, and I don't know if it included the station, but I thought I'd flag it up.
I enjoyed my ride on tbe TPE mk5s. That video is on the channel. But I'm envious of your Chiltern run as I've not yet had the pleasure.... maybe soon 🤷♂️ Thanks for watching 👍
I started work at Leeds City station in June 1952. One lunchtime, in the run up to Christmas that year, I watched workmen putting up a Christmas tree in that first concourse that you showed. They braced a rope agains one of the large ribs, and it went through. They are only covers for steel girders that actually hold the roof up.
Whoa thank you so much for the high praise! You are very kind. Lots of back catalogue for you to catch up on, there's even a playlist of every trip in chronological order if you fancy a challenge 😉 Thanks again 👍
Your videos are consistently good. Interesting visually and also informative. I have to stop myself taking it all for granted and give you a well done!
Thanks Colin. But you don't have to worry. You've been here from the start, so I don't expect plaudits every time. Your consistent encouragement has helped to get me over the 5000 subs. Thank you. 👍
I did a 185 trip from Man Picc to Doncaster with work and later that day a Class180 and then 455 from Donny to London then Esher. Got 1sr class cheaper than standard on TPE, really enjoyed it and was chilled when I got to Donny. Best train of the day. Also used one Leeds to Lime St after Durham Miners Gala better than a lot of the tat thrown out (Southern springs to mind)
Siemens who built the Class 185 Desiro for TransPennine Express are one of the best trains used in Northern England. And Siemens could have manufactured more of the Desiro DMUs for Northern, South Western Railway, ScotRail and Great Western Railway.
Great video as always, you definitely got a result having 2 units, when it's a single unit it's a bit cosy. Someone needs to capture on the video the Huddersfield station cats to really make it unique. Given your (and mine) enjoyment of ale you need a break of journey at Stalybridge Buffet Bar. Keep the UK videos coming.
I have had a liquid lunch at Stalybridge in the past and yea, it is great. I remark that I must return to Huddersfield to ride the Penistone line. I really must remember to ask after the cats when I'm passing there again. Good shout 👍 And yes, others have said I may have taken a different view if only one set had turned up.
Thanks! And no... that was a very late train home. Much of it in the dark, so it wouldn't really have worked. Next week's video, I'm off to Inverness for some fun in Scotland! Thanks for supporting the channel with you views. It is always appreciated 👍
If you had looked out of the window on the left, just before Newton-le-Willows, on the trackside there is a memorial to William Huskisson MP who was killed after he was knocked down by Stephenson's Rocket in 1830 at that location. The sidings by Edge Hill station are Tuebrook sidings.
Thanks for that. I recall the story of Huskisson and would have made an interesting addition to the travelogue. Maybe next time... Thanks for the extra information. Do keep it coming. I'm always pleased to hear more about the journeys I've recorded 👍
Compared to the 195s the 185s are a far superior train. I have to use the 195s often and when they were getting built I honestly thought they would be better than the 185s.......how wrong was I! Great video.
I use the 185s at least 10 times a year to visit family from Manchester to Hull and they are just great! The sound and seats are great and window alignment is pretty decent for the most part. My only dislike is the lack of first class amenities i.e drinks or snacks on the route. that being said I had the choice of an 8 pound standard ticket or a 12 pound one so it was simply to hard to resist, yet the first class seats didn't warrant the extra 4 pound as there was no complimentary food on a 2 hour journey, despite being the only first class passenger at the time.
Yes, I would definitely fork out another £4 for the 1st class. Those 1st class seats are lovely and, it would appear, rarely used! I'm always ok with 1st class not having extras if it is reflected in the price. For example, a recent trip on the channel from Waterloo to Exeter with SWR was effectively in the same or lower price band than 2nd class on the competing GWR route, so I was happy with no frills. Likewise SNCF have always priced their 1st class closer to 2nd on TGV, but all you get is the nicer/bigger seat. Anyway, thank you so much for watching and commenting 👍
@@JohnnyHooverTravels I guess that is fair point that's why AWC or similar TOCs price their first class so high as a value for money sort of thing. Anyways the video is great amongst many on your channel and looking forward to what is to come.

@@mattevans4377 It is high time that the railways stopped using the term "Standard Class." It is meaningless. The dictionary defines standard as a criterion. Space prevents me from elaborating further, but is clear from BR and its successors that it has two different standards, one for first class and one for second. It would be better if the old names of first and second were restored, or they should be renamed standard and bog-standard respectively. I believe that the term "Standard Class" originated with CIE.

Had the misfortune to travel on one of the 3 car units. It was rammed and incredibly hot and sweaty. May have been better with 6 cars.
At one stage, Edge Hill to Lime Street was one continuous tunnel, but it was opened out into its present form in the late nineteenth century.
Might be wise for them to just remove first class and run full standard class.
