Glad the rain cleared out somewhat. I loved Manchester Victoria in that they’ve preserved the original touches and successfully combined it with current needs and tech. Love love love the dome. Not too shabby a location to enjoy your pre-departure pint.
Yes I agree. I really liked it. Another commenter who travels through regularly said that those platforms under the arena can be dire and choked with diesel fumes, so sadly they did not quite nail it all. But the light and airy part is lovely. 👍
Thanks Johnny, a very pleasant, relaxing & enjoyable style of video, taking in some great sights in Manchester Victoria & on the tortoise-paced route to Leeds via Halifax & enjoyed the information you shared, much appreciation.
Just loved the tiled map and the glass & iron canopy, plus the dome is fantastic, an excellent shot there. 5 star vid as always - please find enclosed a beer voucher for that swift half :D
A very pleasant vlog. A very education vlog. All facts about the places we were passing was amazing. For me is Halifax a company and a place in Canada but I did not know they produced after eight. Keep continue with your vlogs and it is interesting with the prices. I think it is common for all rail company to have complex and complicated taxes.
Thank you yet again! Our rail pricing is very complicated and the subject of many comments on this channel and elsewhere. But, it seems to be the same right across Europe.
Yes indeed We in Sweden have a ticket price system that is impossible to understand and if you don’t have installed the app it is impossible to bay a ticket
The Calder line is great. Victoria could be a gem. Sadly, as a regular user it's awful. The platforms 3-6 are diesel fumed - not sure the ventilation is ever used. The gate lines don't work consistently. The staff are very rude. Platform 2 has never been finished.
Sorry, I should have replied earlier... you do make a great point here. Victoria is lovely under that airy arch, but yes, it is a bit dark and dire at the platforms under the Arena. Thank you for watching 👍

Manchester Victoria's renovation has been incredible. Just a couple of decades ago it was an incredibly sleazy, dark place. Not too different to how Kings Cross used to be, and with a similar reputation.
Great vids mate keep it up. It’s a great route always nice to say I take this route a lot but i like Piccadilly more than Victoria it’s more modern I think
Thank you for the kind words, very much appreciated 👍 I like them both as they are so different. I suppose the question is, which one would you prefer to have to wait an hour for a train at? I'd probably go with Victoria only because of that beautiful station refreshments room, but neither would be a major hardship.
Enjoyed the video, but you should have panned left whilst outside the station to see the original Hunt's Bank station building, which is still in use today.
Yes, that was a mistake, I must admit. Thanks for watching and do keep pointing things out, because I won't get better at this without these extra details 👍
As always, great video Johnny. Coincidentally I travelled that exact same trip on the Sunday before you, and it was so rammed full as to be extremely unpleasant and dangerous. Possibly the most dispiriting train trip I've had outside of London Underground. Still at least we can look forward to some Northern Power Rail upgrades on that line now... I mean the Tories always deliver on their promises, no..?!
Thanks! And yes, when I've been making the latest batch of videos "oop Narth" I was struck just how poor the infrastructure has become and how slow things are and how full the trains are. Under investment for years is really showing alongside the mistakes of the franchising experiment. I'm sure everyone in the North is feeling wonderfully "levelled up" and so jolly pleased they have put their faith in our great leaders. I mean, 13 years? Surely it is still too early to tell 😂
I quite like the Class 195 and Class 331 Civity that Northern have ordered from CAF. Maybe CAF should build more of them so that Northern can replace the rest of the existing diesel and electric trains along the entire Northern network.
I still think that electrification from Manchester Victoria to Leeds and York should still happen. And also Northern to order more extra Class 195 and Class 331 Civity trains.
We'll see I suppose. At the moment govt promises are about as stable as an empty crisp packet in a hurricane. I don't think they really want to do anything before the election if it doesn't include lining the pockets of their sponsors. That's just the tired and grumpy railfan in me 🤷♂️

Hebden Bridge has other claims to fame. It is said to be the most lesbian friendly town in Britain, and from 1939 to about 1971 the infamous Acre Mill was used by Cape to process asbestos. Two British television programmes, The Dust at Acre Mill and Alice - Fight for Life were made about it and are available on TH-cam. It’s a much nicer place now. Near to the Chocolate factory in Halifax is Hargreaves Foundry. If you walk North from Kings Cross station in London towards the Regent’s Canal and Coal Drops Yard you will pass a new building on your left with large columns in a sort of plaited pattern. The sections of these columns were cast by Hargreaves, who also cast some reproduction lighting columns for the Bluebell Railway station at East Grinstead. There was another asbestos Mill on the line, Turner & Newell at Rochdale. The building with a large dome which can be seen from Rochdale station seems to be a Catholic’s church, but it’s an atypical design for one.
That would be the 1930 Liverpool Road Station, Manchester, now part of MOSI. Little trace remains of Crown Street Station, Liverpool, the original 1830 main line terminus, which is now a park.

Liverpool Lime Street?
