Some Thoughts about War in Ukraine, My Haters and "great" russian culture

  • Last week has been especially rough for Ukraine since russia keeps attacking my country with special cruelty. Today I want to share some thoughts about the war, explain why you may hear Ukrainian voices more rarely than at the beginning of the full-scale invasion (and why it is even more important to listen to them now), and share with you the real face of an "average russian citizen", how they see Ukraine, Ukrainian language and Ukrainians. I will show you some comments that I have received from russian haters and want you to stay till the end of the video.

    I spent three weeks in Ukraine during Christmas and New Year in 2023 in Lviv and Kyiv. There were air raids practically every day. Once a rocket came about a kilometer away from the apartment in Lviv. There was no bomb shelter. I understand what you mean, but I don't live in Ukraine. I have it easy compared to you. My appreciation increased a lot when I watched how you ran the society in the middle of all that war. However, the people were kind, even though the war is definitely stressful. You are all heroes to me. Ukraine is in my heart.

    I'm not normally one to leave a comment, but this video summarizes my own feelings so well. I have friends in Ukraine who have lost family members and businesses to rockets and have been within a couple hundred meters of explosions. I worry constantly about the terror they face, the sleep deprivation, the stress, and the fact that one day I might just never hear from them again. I wonder if they will be able to hear an airplane or fireworks years from now without being taken back to the war. I wonder which nights they are crying themselves to sleep. That they continue to live their lives and refuse to be broken makes them my heroes, and it would be impossible for anyone to subjugate them. This is the message I try to spread whenever I meet people who are ignorant or tired of hearing about what is happening.
    I recommend reading Ukrainian news every day. For one thing, it is reading practice. More importantly, draining though it may be, the horrible details reported in the wake of every attack are also more impactful when you are trying to describe the reality of the situation to the apathetic.

    • @1midnightfish
      @1midnightfish 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree with everything you wrote. The news just hits differently when you know someone who is physically within the range of those weapons... but when Kyiv is targeted for the THIRD TIME IN ONE WEEK, I worry about pestering the same person with my "Are you OK??" messages - they already have so much to cope with, do they really need my anxiety on top of that? 🥺
      Following Ukrainian sources is essential, I think - though I also to keep an eye on the BBC, partly just to see how they're reporting things. I started waking up to Ukrainian radio about a year and a half ago and that's also been invaluable, not only as listening practice but also as a way of getting news - and air-raid alerts - in real time.

    My UK relatives no longer ask how it's going,they say it's dropped out of the news now.They even told me not to talk about "depressing" things . They now rarely call us or message other than to let us know how they are living a normal life out walking going on holiday and don't stop to think that they're waving sweets in front of diabetics. They never mention the war at all now. They have their head in the sand and don't want to know, we've all been there and learned our lesson,they don;t want to learn and fool themselves that it will blow over ,it wont reach them. Adds to the frustration of rotting in an overpriced western village for two years.

    • @1midnightfish
      @1midnightfish 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      As someone who lives in the UK, I'm wondering what news your relatives are following... Ukraine is in the news pretty much every day! And I mean on the BBC. I don't tend to rely on that for Ukraine news just because I prefer to follow Ukrainian sources, but I keep an eye on the BBC because I want to see how much of what's going on gets reported, and when, and how - and the reports are there for people to read if they want. There was a big march in London a month ago, to mark the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion - and probably events in other cities as well. Ukrainian literature is being translated into English.
      People of course are capable of forgetting most things they want to forget, but the nation as a whole is not forgetting about the war in Ukraine. I personally don't let people forget - I mention it a lot, read books that I swap with friends so we can talk about them afterwards, keep learning the language, and wear the Ukrainian colours somewhere visible whenever I go out.

    As someone who has family ethnicity with Poland, Ukraine and Russia, I am left somewhat conflicted. Yet, for all of the troubles and misery going on there, blame should not be thrown at the majority of regular people, for we only want to live peacefully, have family, friends and serve the Lord - our anger should be placed on the leaders and evildoers who organized and started the mess.

    • @LS-Moto
      @LS-Moto 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, it's the governments that start wars. And yes, not every Russian can be blamed. However, it is a fact, that Russians have not really stood up when they had to. When Putin started to take away the freedoms Russia gained after fall. This all happened back in the 2000's and Russia was already starting to bite other countries. The only one that really tried to push for real and positive change, was Navalny. Right now, you only see moments of individual protest, but there is really no movement in Russia. Right now, creating a movement in Russia is basically impossible, but Russians didn't demand a non-bullying country when they still had the chance. Putin has been tightening the grip in Russia, because he knows that if he grants Russians freedoms, they will demand for change. So he fears mongers them into submission instead, so that they'll sit quietly.
      But just as we accuse Russians of not doing enough, we also have to acuse western countries of delaying support to Ukraine. We just don't support them enough to actually push the Russians back. We only supply them enough to hold the line. The conflict has really frozen since early 2023 really.

    I can give you some positive news regarding support from the Swedish people, eight out of ten Swedes want to maintain or increase support for Ukraine and less than one in ten Swedes want to reduce support. These are fresh figures from a survey in February.
    All that is true is the YELLOW and the BLUE
    SLAVA UKRAINI

    Не знаю, навіщо люди пишуть такі різкі речі, це дуже грубо. Для мене російська мова була першою мовою, яку я вивчав, тож вона більше схожа на мою базу, ніж на українську, хоча різниця зменшується з кожним днем, і тепер, через два роки, я можу спілкуватися з деякими українцями, які є тут, у Данії. Я не можу уявити, що ви переживаєте кожен день, це має бути жахливо, я просто хочу, щоб ця ідіотська війна якомога швидше закінчилася. Всього найкращого вам, вашу чудовому чоловікові та псу Куперу, і дякую за всі корисні поради та відео, я дивив на вас вже багато років.

    I remember your story from the beginning of the war. One of my friends from Odesa just lost two friends to the bombing.
    In America, we are very removed from the rest of the world. Things only register in our psyche when they make the news cycle. Lately, there is not much in the news about Ukraine.
    I follow a group of Americans who support Ukraine 100%. Most Russian are not too bright and just accept the propaganda. Besides, they are very insecure.
    I don't worry too much. They mostly already hate Americans. Have you seen the channel "1420"? It's sad and scary at the same time to see how Russians think.
    Be safe. Thanks for your lessons.

      I used to watch 1420 at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. After watching several of the street interviews, I had to stop because I became too angry by the amount of ordinary russians who spew lies and hate. The events this past week clearly exposed the hypocrisy of russians.

    I started learning Russian in the late 80s, early 90s, I had somehow bought the idea that they were educated people oppressed by the communist regime. The reality is that, unlike other countries which were under the iron curtain, to whom that idea applied, when I started to know them, Russians in particular tend to have a really ugly view of the world. And as I started learning Russian history, I realized that their communist phase was just that, a phase in a continuum history of barbarism. The hopes did not last long, in just a couple years they were busy bombing their own Duma, killing people in the streets, planting bombs to their own buildings so they could "justify" wars, etc. It's the Ruzzian style.

    I'm from Baltic's. You don't have to explain to us who they are and what are they doing. We knew it for centuries before internet was involved. But the nations who's countries never bordered russia or never was incorporated as the part of "it's world" is very naive, so it's not wrong to remind them from time to time, who is who in this battle. Glory to Ukraine!

    Nika, I am in America and I call my congresspeople every day to ask for renewed aid for Ukraine. It sickens me that our domestic politics have gotten in the way of supporting Ukraine, but I am still hopeful that we will see a successful vote next week in the congress. Although my family is safe in America, the war is the first and last thing we think about every single day. We have not forgotten you and we are supporting in every way we can. I am also proud to be a Verba student and your TH-cam channel has been a huge help to my learning. Дуже дякую. Слава Україні!

    Привіт Ніко. Such an honest speech! Thank you for reminding us how everyday life of Ukrainians look like.
    Хоча у мене є друзів в Україні, з якими я регулярно спілкуюся, насправді вони вже настільки звикли складним умовам, що вони здебільшого навіть не говорять про щоденні повітряні тривоги, шахеди, ракети...
    Ви такі молодці, які за останні два роки вивчили адаптуватися до тих умов, що насправді нам іноді може здатися, що це "не так страшно". Але це все неймовірно страшно і треба це нам, хто живемо в інших країнах, постійно нагадувати. В новинах можна бачити (тільки) найгірші речі. Але досвід повсякденного життя, це дуже важко передати, але одночасно це дуже важливо. Дякую за те - це допомагає мені залишатися мотивованим постійно продовжувати допомагати.
    Українська гарна мова - і насправді я почав цікавитися українською саме тому, що росія вторглася в Україну. Вивчати вашу мову сприймаю як один зі способів як можна Україну підтримувати. Також це мені відкриває багато шляхів, як дізнаватися більше про життя українців. Ви розумієте - я б ніколи наприклад не бачив саме це відео, якби я не цікавився українською. Дякую за всі ваші відео про українську, які мені дуже допомогли вчитися і також дякую за все, що ви відверто сказали в цьому - це важливо, дуже.
    Слава Україні! Гарного дня, Ніко, тримайтесь 🙏🫂

    Thanks for this video Nika, I'm sorry you had to put up with the deluge of demented bs, but if there's one way of dealing with that sort of thing, it's what you did here! Btw, lovely cotton in the background 😉
    Obviously I could go on for a long time about the topics you touch on in this video, I'm sure each one of us could. I will just say two things, as succinctly as I can (but advance apologies for writing a lot more than usual).
    1) sadly there were people in the world who could have imagined the horrors Ukrainians are now experiencing, even before 2022: Afghans, Syrians, Iraqis, Yemenis, Palestinians... some of them bombed and brutalised by russia, but many - directly or indirectly - by the governments who are currently "supporting" Ukraine (the quotation marks are there because as we know, some of these nations are doing a fraction of what they could and should be doing).
    I never used to be a badge-wearing person, but now I wear two pretty much wherever I go: one with the Palestinians colours, one with the Ukrainian colours. Not only because I support both nations in their struggle for self-determination and against genocide, also because I want to remind as many people as possible that we mustn't fall into the trap of forgetting about one war because another one is taking place.
    2) Having no Slavic background whatsoever, I am one of the growing number of people around the world who are going to have Ukrainian as their first Slavic language. That means, among other things, that russian looks and sounds odd to me. And I can't tell you how happy I am about this! Even though I've heard spoken russian many times over the course of my life, I'd never felt remotely tempted to learn it, but the first time I heard a few minutes of spoken Ukrainian I knew it would be my third language.
    As for russian, I don't want to learn to communicate in the language but at some point I think it would be useful to understand it, in speech and in writing - mostly to be aware of russianisms in Ukrainian and also surzhyk, which could come up in a text I may have to translate in future. I'm going to only concentrate on Ukrainian until I'm at a solid B2 level, then I'll run an audit on whatever russian I may have accidentally absorbed, and decide what to do about it. I must admit that the thought of learning russian as a negative space of Ukrainian is intriguing to me.
    That's it, more apologies for this long post that I'm SURE could have been more... succinct, and thank you for all your work! You are awesome. Like your country 💙💛

    I'm getting the feeling that I am about the only one in my country who still following everything that is going on in Ukraine, as well as helping Ukrainians and providing support to them in these horrible times. It looks like the majority of people are ignoring and or simply not interested in what is going on in your country since over 2 years now. It is very sad that we are seeing this happening and not doing enough to help Ukraine fight this evil. Nika, I have been supporting Ukraine in diffrent ways since the war started, and I will continue to do this as long as it is required. Слава Україні!

    As an American, my heart breaks for your current situation. It’s terrible to hear some of my friends acting “checked out” with the Ukrainian news. The common history knowledge of younger generations is dwindling. This war is the unfinished business from WW2 and the result of the west’s neglect. We knew we were taking grain from a starving country during the famine. We knew there was a famine. Now we have Stalin’s protégé to deal with. I don’t understand how people could think geopolitics do not matter, especially in this situation. I’m learning Ukrainian now and hopefully will contribute to helping when the time comes. I love your videos. Дуже дякою.

    So sorry to hear that! Thanks for sharing your experiences❣ Honestly I feel very hopeless - how will the future look like? As the west (our governments) seems to only want to support Ukraine enough to let them survive, but not make you win😭Anyway, I still want to dream (like Martin Luther King) - mine is about justice and peace, truth, territorial integrity, democracy and a humble russia. Seems so far away, but I will keep on dreaming! And doing as much as I can while also continuing my normal life!
    Слава і перемога Україні! бережи вас Бог!

The Ukrainian language has similarities with my language and I understand Ukrainian well enough and I also speak Russian. Ukrainian culture is strong and people are natural. My country was at war for 90-95 years and I know well what it looks like. I love Ukraine.
