**Key Takeaways:** 1. **Yerba Mate vs. Green Tea:** - Both yerba mate and green tea contain caffeine and offer energizing benefits. - Despite their similarities, they have distinct effects on fat loss, exercise performance, and overall health. 2. **Benefits of Yerba Mate:** - **Fat Oxidation:** Studies indicate that yerba mate can enhance fat oxidation, especially during exercise at up to 70% of maximum intensity. This increase in fat utilization contributes to a 24% rise in energy expenditure from fat. - **Exercise Performance:** Yerba mate helps in reducing blood lactate levels, allowing for improved performance during high-intensity exercises. - **Body Composition:** Over 12 weeks, yerba mate intake led to significant reductions in total body fat, body fat percentage, and waist-to-hip ratio without compromising muscle mass. - **Metabolic Health:** Yerba mate improves fat oxidation and reduces LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, beneficial for pre-diabetic and insulin-resistant individuals. - **Cardioprotective Effects:** Regular consumption of yerba mate can significantly decrease triglycerides, contributing to better cardiovascular health. 3. **Benefits of Green Tea:** - **Fat Oxidation and Energy Expenditure:** Green tea extract boosts fat oxidation and energy expenditure by 177%, although this is comparable to yerba mate's impact. - **Longevity:** High consumption of green tea (around five cups daily) is associated with a 12-23% reduced risk of death from all causes, including a significant decrease in the risk of heart disease and stroke. - **Cholesterol Management:** Green tea lowers total cholesterol and LDL levels, aiding overall cardiovascular health. - **Neuroprotection:** Green tea has shown potential neuroprotective effects, possibly reducing oxidative stress and promoting cell survival. - **Digestive Concerns:** While green tea is beneficial, it can cause digestive issues like heartburn if consumed on an empty stomach. 4. **When to Use Each:** - **Yerba Mate:** Ideal for high-intensity workouts a few days a week due to its caffeine content and benefits in reducing lactate levels. Best consumed earlier in the day to avoid sleep disruption. - **Green Tea:** Suitable for lower-intensity exercises and as a daily beverage for longevity benefits. Its theanine content balances caffeine, making it appropriate for sustained consumption throughout the day. **Conclusion:** Yerba mate and green tea offer unique benefits, making them suitable for different contexts. Yerba mate excels in enhancing fat oxidation and exercise performance, particularly during high-intensity workouts. On the other hand, green tea contributes significantly to longevity, cardiovascular health, and neuroprotection, making it an excellent choice for daily, sustained consumption. Integrating both teas strategically can optimize fat loss, exercise results, and overall health, leveraging their respective strengths.

I have started to do jump rope every day so it's been helping me out! Has Thomas made a video on Matcha? That's another drink I want to start drinking, benefits are great from what I hear! Oh but yes, play with the doses and the time you stop drinking it before you sleep. There have been days where I would just couldn't sleep 😭. So far I am stopping 2 hours before bed. But I think I'ma increase it to 3. I don't fill up the whole flask. Oh don't forget it also suppresses your hunger which I have been experiencing that! 👌🏻
I'm from Argentina. I read almost all the comments. Children drink yerba mate , as a tea, known as Mate Cocido. Especially low income children whose parents xannot buy milk every day. If it were to be cancergenic, 90% of Argentina's population would have cancer. Here, people wake up in the morning and the FIRST thing they do is prepare their mate 🧉. Great video Thomas, I think it worth you to try our traditional way of using YM in Argentina, just to look at it as a ritual ( like tea ) instead of a supplement. Our traditional preparation is just pure YM and hot water. Is very good to support fasting hours and people here uses it when they don't have other foods ( due to lack of food, timing, or during working hours) and is something you can share with others so you are not taking a whole dose. Also our way of taking includes that you continue to add water to it and you only have a strong mate at the beginning and then you keep going when the YM is a lil washed out and it turns in almost just water. Something to be careful is to not burn the YM with water temperatures higher than 85 C degrees, it burns the YM, change the taste in a bad way, and has the health issues of taking water that hot. Hope it helps.
I'm so impressed with Yerba Mate. In the 90's my Nigerian boyfriend drank it for stamina, now look at Thomas given the science and saying drink it for fat loss😂
Consuming mate in large quantities and over a long period of time can contribute to increasing the risk of cancer of the mouth , esophagus , larynx , lungs , kidneys and bladder , especially if you smoke or drink alcohol . The consumption of mate is not recommended for children and during pregnancy and breastfeeding . Furthermore, it is better not to use it if you have irritable bowel syndrome , high blood pressure, glaucoma or osteoporosis .
i saw a documentary about the lives of Gauchos in Argentina. They eat a diet of mostly meat. The gauchos said they drink Yerba Mate tea so they could defecate. Otherwise, they could not. Since they were out on the plains running cattle and did eat meat almost exclusively, I believe them. Do you have any information about this aspect of Yerba Matte ? Thank you in advance.

It could simply be because people drink it too hot over long periods of time through a straw. Just make sure it's at an appropriate temperature. They really don't know if that's correlation or causation. People who drink coffee over long periods of time may have the same problems. I'm not convinced it's the mate that does the actual damage.

A possible explanation is that mate contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), substances known as carcinogens, but in reality the picture is complex and still to be clarified, also because: Studies show a correlation between the temperature at which the drink is consumed and the probability of developing cancer (the consumption of hot drinks is a known risk factor for the digestive tract ), cases of cancer overlap with the use of alcohol , tobacco, the presence of nutritional deficiencies and poor oral hygiene. To be quite honest, I think there's just too much fear mongering. There's research that you can look into, but I think ultimately, they don't conclude causation or correlation. I mean, the sun can cause cancer... what gives. I just love mate drank traditionally with a gourd the Argentine way.

one day yerba mate, one day green tea, but in the form of matcha to benefit from the polyphenoles as well
Starbucks in the thumbnail of a 'health' channel. Ok dude.
Guarana works even better than Yerba Mate for me.
Look into Guarana.
Or try Guayusa. Almost the same as Mate Tea.
I have enjoyed yerba mate for years - not the canned stuff, the actual brewed tea because it tastes better. I just use it for energy, I am so happy it helps with fat utilization too! 🙌
Both teas stain your teeth, so that's a drawback. It would be great if there was a way to counteract that.
Guayusa is better! Nicknamed 'Night watchman'.
No study comparing it vs. Caffeine?
Thanks for your wealth of information.
Good news for me been drinking green tea daily for the past 40 years as a beverage after my 1st cup of coffee. Have tried yerba mate as well as a beverage and variety. ( I Drink lots of teas throughout the day.)
Do have excellent triglyceride level 83 and
I didn’t know about yerba because i am asian and know green tea is great and is better advertising
Any thoughts on Yerba Mate capsules that have low caffeine content?

Of course you did. You need to make a youtube video lol
I’ve had absolutely no weight effects for over a month @40 mg material daily. I couldn’t during grams of it daily 😮. I’m a group fitness instructor, personal trainer, sports Nutrionalist, and modified keto 70 grams whole carbs not processed 30 % fat) I lost 140 lbs in 13 months 4 years ago, still teach but now 61 and gained back 40 pounds in the last 40 years. Wish we actually could find something that was actually feasible 🤷🏻♀️. Enjoy your podcasts💞🙏

Does gauyusa have the same effects?

What about Arizona green tea
Curious if the store bought cans, say the yellow label, have sugar in them?
You can read the label yourself. Just search it lol
What about Matcha???
How about matcha?
What about coffee?
Which green tea is good to drink?
Good info and which yerba mate is the best to use ?
I avoid any smoked yerba
My favorite is Playadito.
I read that the Company CBse should be the best but unfortunately they have so many different Styles of Yerba...I must first dig around the different ingredients and Styles to know what to choose 😄
Don’t know how it compares in this form, but my fav is Wisdom of the Ancients Instant Yerba Mate with or without Srevia. So delish! It keeps you cool in AZ hot weather. I take it iced with me everywhere. This is a local brand and been buying my Pau D’ Arco and pure Stevia drops from them for 40 yrs as well❣️
Get the air dried mate.
Touché Yerba mate
Which form of yerba mate is best? Im only aware of the yellow can at the store
They sale it in bulk near your organic store in a form of tea
@@CaT_0924thank you!
Do a video about guayusa too, similar to yerbate mate ❤
Loved the comparison .. i drink both❤❤❤
What about the oxalate content?
He doesn't care about oxalates. They're killers 😢
@@DebbieTDP yikes!
@@helenahandkart1857 I'd rather do without 🤷🏻♀️😬
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND RISKS
The main and most important contraindication is related to the presence of caffeine, which in sensitive subjects can cause the well-known side effects of the stimulant substance, such as
insomnia ,
stomach ache ,
increased heart rate ,
increased anxiety .
Caution is also recommended in patients who for pathological reasons could develop side effects related to the same substance, for example in case of:
diabetes ,
diarrhea and more generally irritable bowel syndrome ,
high pressure ,
patients in whom diuretic action is contraindicated.
However, there are many more reservations about the consumption of large quantities (1-2 liters per day) and/or for long periods of time, particularly in association with the consumption of alcohol or nicotine, which has been linked to a possible increase in the risk of developing of various types of cancer, including stomach , kidney , lung , and mouth cancer .
A possible explanation is that mate contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), substances known as carcinogens, but in reality the picture is complex and still to be clarified, also because:
Studies show a correlation between the temperature at which the drink is consumed and the probability of developing cancer (the consumption of hot drinks is a known risk factor for the digestive tract ),
cases of cancer overlap with the use of alcohol , tobacco, the presence of nutritional deficiencies and poor oral hygiene.
It is therefore difficult to distinguish the relative weight of the different factors at play.
It is generally contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, due to the principle of caution (there is no evidence that consumption is safe); for the same reason, consumption in childhood is not recommended
@@DebbieTDP2 much of a good thing…
why are you pushing starbucks in the thumbnail?
I’m not
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial so it's not a starbucks cup in the thumbnail?
It got your attention, didn’t it? Not pushing it. Stop making weird accusations
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial how is that a weird accusation, liar? it got you a downvote. a well deserved one
Thomas is a legend
Does it cause throat cancer though or is it all hot liquid exposure?
I believe there is a plethora of ways to consume it. I used to boil water, soak and French press, then pour it into a cup of ice
I think you are safe below 80 C degrees, but just go and check for research about it, there are some
To be quite honest, I think there's just too much fear mongering. There's research that you can look into, but I think ultimately, they don't conclude causation or correlation. I mean, the sun can cause cancer... what gives. I just love mate drank traditionally with a gourd the Argentine way.
Boycott Starbucks!!
Longtime subscriber now unsubscribing, appreciate the knowledge but that particular coffee house has blood on its hands
So drinking Yerba mate can cause you to loose 24% more or at least potentially?
This is so stupid. It’s not the Yerba Mate that makes you lose weight and keep it off. It’s the TRT or whatever drug ur on. Kinda getting out of hand how many influencers, who are on enhancement drugs, who won’t admit that they are, telling nattys what to eat to lose weight, how to train, etc.
It’s ridiculous. It’s a disservice and honestly, a clown fest at this point.
I respect chasing a bag, but at the cost of what? People genuinely looking for answers?
It’s time to stop with this nonsense.
Most people in the world who lose weight and keep it off are natural i don't really see your point unless I'm missing something
@@harleybfilmsIf you can’t see my point that’s your problem.
@@dovasquad5228 fair enough brother have a good one
The problem with Yerba mate: once you start drinking it you want to keep trying the different brands (Canarias, Cruz de Malta, etc) you see people drinking. So at any given time you have all these half full bags of Yerba in your pantry lol. Also I just found out there’s a Yerba mate emoji 🧉
