      It felt obvious that they would fly home. The first thing I would want is to see how the simulation represents something I'm intimately familiar with. I'm sure it's the same for a ton of simulated environments and open worlds, people want to see stuff they know. After you can start seeing the rest of the world.

      My first time was 1982. I bought it at Radio Shack for $50. Two "cities", Chicago and Champaign Illinois. I thought it was cool so never really paid much attention to scenery. Still don't so MSFS2020 didn't spend much time on my HD. Revolutionary program for sure ... just not my cup of tea.

      I finally installed this game 2-weeks ago. No, they didn't recreate the world. I quickly learned that all the hype, as usual, was ineffable twaddle. It was reminiscent of when Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 came out, and the tag line was "warning, this is not a game".
      MSFS 2020 is a slight improvement over FS2004, but the vast majority of the graphics are the same, namely, "the world". Use the hype as a lesson in why you need to defend yourself against marketing.

    • @GlennDavey

      @@onepalproductions It's stunning, I went from flying into Lukla underneath the shadow of Mount Everest, I was just flying around Burbank and compared it directly with Flight Simulator X. There's no comparison. It's ACTUALLY Los Angeles. They even have all the wind turbines out towards Palm Springs. It's a literal 1:1 mapping of the entire planet. And the old game is scaled all wrong, Alcatraz is too close to the Golden Gate bridge for example. You need to get back in your time machine and go to the future where you have holograms or stop taking drugs. Suffering from recency bias is what you are.

  • @SgtHappyHands
    @SgtHappyHands 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    My thanks for this documentary!
    Having never played a flight sim, I had a bit of Dunning-Kruger when it came to this game. I never thought it was trivial. I knew it must involve lots of data and data processing. But I would say I thought it was probably 10 times less technical than this video revealed it to be. In my mind they just took all the global imagery data, ran 'some' processing on it, hand detailed the major places, and then got some basic live weather data and ran 'some' processing on that to render the weather. I thought the hardest part was the data aggregation. I severely underestimated the complexity of processing they were doing.
    To use an analogy, I thought it was more like a commercial jetliner but it turned out to be a state of the art military fighter jet. And I now have a newfound appreciation for the technical achievement that is Microsoft Flight Simulator.

      @@TheGoncas2 No, it's not made up, and no, it doesn't raise serious questions about the user's privacy. All they're doing is taking the player's IP address to get an approximated geolocation, which practically all sites on the internet collect in order to give the user a relevant and coherent experience based on where they live, among other useful applications. The player's real geolocation would then match with the same geolocation inside the game when the player is flying over there or close to it. I'm not 100% sure if they indeed did this, but i'm certain that would be one easy way to do it.

      Naw dude. When I was in highschool 15 years ago, I met this old vet who was like 60 or 70 at the time. Disabled and what not, all he did was play MFS and one day he heard about me being good with computers from one of his Tennant's who lived in his house. I was friends with this tennant and he just randomly gave my name to him and thats how I learned about Microsoft Flight Simulator. A new update came out requiring 256 MB of video RAM and his GFX card only had 128. I had an extra 1GB card at my house that I gave to him because 9 recently just upgraded from nvidia to ati and back then ati was wayyy sharper than nvidia so I was ok with 512 instead of 1gb and since I had him show me what exactly was lagging with the simulator (because maybe he just needed a bump in CPU or system RAM for some loading times), the entire game was lagging in windowed mode and at super low resolution like 600x400 so when I put that 1gb card in omg this game was literally top tier quality. I assumed it was like a $200 game or $1,000's because it was military since he was in. The military. I thought it was exclusive stuff hahahah but seriously, after seeing this game on windows xp I just knew it was a serious program. I might not like flying around the planet all that much but I know other humans might and this game is the best game of its type. No other game compares to it. And I haven't legitimately even seen any updates in 15 years. I wish I had a 1gb ati card to give him for even better sharpness back then. I still think about that to this day. I wonder what it looks like now.
