6:22 There are like 10 free updates in the marketplace where you can download 3d data for cities, like London in this case. The whole city of London gets replaced with photogrammetry and carefully handcrafted landmarks in one of those updates.

one of my favourite bits of scenery was in my city of Melbourne Australia, at the release of the game, one random house in the northern suburbs had a typo in the coding and instead of being single story it was something like 200 stories so there was just this random spire which was dubbed The Melbourne Spire. our state premier at the time (Daniel Andrews) was infamous and in the news a lot because of our strict covid lockdowns at the time, but people started calling it "Daniel Andrews Lair" or "Dictator Dan's Penthouse" which was a funny bit of local banter i thought

well... you are missing out, if you had tried fs2020 with a virtual reality headset and a flight stick on a decent pc i can guarantee that you would no longer not care about flying!
i am no flight junkie but i do have a thing for simulators... and fs2020 is special.
my favorite way of introducing people to VR for the first time is with fs2020, i give them an easy plane to fly like the cessna, i start them off in the air in a place they know well, i set it to dusk or dawn, with heavy rain and scattered fog, preferably near the coast as the low sun reflecting of the water makes for some breathtaking views if you dont get lost in the fog... then their challenge is to stay alive and find the local airport to land.
judging by the amount of wows, oh my gods and the occasional very intense grunting sounds followed by a couple very loud OH SHITS and then can i try agains... people are into it.
i often find myself completely loosing track of place and time, once i was just gonna do a quick test of a new plane (the grumman goose), i ended up flying clear across Iceland and back enjoying the heck out of the views, along the way i did notice a smoky smell and actually heard a siren at one time... but didnt think much of it, i was busy.
when i finally landed back in Reykjavik and took my headset off there was flashing blue lights lighting up my entire apartment, i looked out the window and saw cop cars and firetrucks everywhere, and a 3 story warehouse building on fire with the roof caving in maybe 250-350 feet away, turns out i was in the closest apartment that had not been evacuated... fs2020 in VR is VERY immersive! 👀

I'm a dev for flight sim. The tech put behind the product is quite insane but lots of little funny things exist. For example, if you actually dig deep, you'll find that trees are actually a sprite sheet of like 30 different angles, each tree only really has like 64x64 pixels per angle. We call them "imposters" since they only mimic what was once a 3D model, but now just replicates itself as instances 3D-looking trees on the cheap.

6:19 they did multiple world updates over the past 1 and a half years or so, and currently they're on the like 8-11th one. in London more of these buildings are here now and i think that whole area uses a 3d scan now with the taller buildings being models. but you have to download the update packs from the store, they are free but using them all obviously makes the game size larger. so i think thats why they gave peopel the option to not download them. they're separated by general countries in the world. I did longer flights and then i realised that they do take very long and it's kind of boring with the autopilot on, so there i was stuck in the cockpit with my VR gogglles. So at some point i was using the camera drone and because the 'camera drone' is attached to the airplane, its like flying (like superman style flying), i could go higher/lower/forward/back, but you would be moving with the plane. So in the end i'm just flying through the clouds and watching the landscape pass by. Hearing the wind, instead of the airplane, it's magical. The first time i went like this through a cloud, i actually opened my mouth, wanting to breath the cloud.. lol.. Vr is just awesome.. ;) Anyway, beats sitting in the cockpit looking at clouds.. 😅😅

But considering all that, MS Flight Sim looks sick. Also I am vaguely interested in the flying too, so that's even more appeal.

@@Ocarina654 The world updates actually killed my interest.
I live in France, and after the french world update, the landmarks were still messy all over the place. Even Paris is failed, and let's not even talk about its suburbs.
What looks great in real life, doesn't look anything good in this flight sim. So the contemplation aspect is not very interesting.
About the flying, it gets boring pretty fast. It lacks any kind of "fun" stuff to do. It lacks some basic "game" aspects. Even DCS is immensely more engaging and fun as a flight sim.

I use Flight Simulator to fly aircraft. If I want to tour the world at street level, I use Google/ Apple maps and street view. Aircraft do not fly at street level. The world is designed to be viewed from an aircraft. It’s not a rail or vehicle simulator. It’s still early days yet for the sim.
Try looking at earlier versions to see how much things have advanced.
Lots of buildings on my version featured. You must be running the original game before world updates.

You should have mentioned that slew, and Showcase Mode (Drone) can be keybound to your flight yoke. This makes them extremely easy to use. The sim accepts multiple definitions for the same key. And it figures out what mode you are in all by itself. This even works on the axis controls like the yoke itself. Some TH-camrs show their bindings for this and how to do it. I have it this way and it works.

There is an easier way to do the freecam things that doesn't involve AS many keyboard shortcuts, just move your mouse towards the top of the screen, in the menu that appears open the camera tab and from there you can change your drone speed etc with sliders if I remember that part correctly.

as an aspiring pilot with a pilot dad, playing this game (more specifically with a vr) is insane to me, it did a really good job at making the insides of the planes and landmarks. overall it feels very realistic, though if you aren't interested in aviation, i can understand why you would find it boring and too complex for a flying sim.

I think I can offer a reason why churches and other notable buildings aren't replicated in the game, as I've worked on games with similar landmarks.
    In a word: Licensing
Various notable buildings have image rights that need to be licensed out from the building owners. If you play a game like GRID Legends for example you'll see in the credits that London Eye, Eiffel Tower etc. are called out as partners.
Given that Microsoft is trying to replicate the entire world here those costs would be enormous, so I bet what happened is that they picked the landmarks "everyone knows about" (like the Eiffel Tower, Golden Gate Bridge etc.) and secured the rights to just those.
This may also be why World Updates came post-launch as agreements to recreate certain buildings/cities may have taken long enough to be pushed to post-launch.

I honestly think this tech could be used to create a driving simulator for the whole world. Not in its current state, but as you're moving so much slower and viewing a much smaller area, they could use AI to to a best guess on roads, parks, buildings, trees (3d), street signs, people and simulate traffic for the area you're in. They could also generate road signs based on geographic data, though I imagine this would be a pitfall on it's own. Sure, it wouldn't be a 1-1 match, but they could get pretty close! The main issue I see with doing this is bug testing would be a nightmare (which I imagine they had with MSFS in the first place). Imagine having to drive around as many locations as possible in the world for graphical artefacts. I would love for this to be true, but who knows... maybe in 5 years.

sure the details of housing arnt always perfect, but they are pretty damn good. my house has a house about 1/3 as big next to it, and my others neighbours is about 30% bigger than ours. this is actually shown really well, with one neighbour having the smaller house and the other the bigger, and in more or less the right spot. the neighbour along from them is a farm, and one of thier barns is a flat block in the game, but still its incredible that it roughly gets the size and location of the houses pretty darn near perfect. just the actual house and its design is obviously different.

    The simple things in life...
edit: I would HIGHLY recommend using an xbox controller for the drone cam... additionally, many of the problems highlighted are fixed/getting fixed. Depending on the location and availability of photogrammetry data or third party/modding content. :)
