  • What was The Buddha's Last Teaching?
    #dhamma #enlightenment #buddhism #meditation
Once, when the Buddha was ailing in Beluva, amidst the distress and sorrow of Ānanda (DN 26), and again, upon hearing of Venerable Sāriputta’s passing and Ānanda’s ensuing grief (SN 47.13), the Buddha delivered these teachings. They encapsulated his entire practice in a succinct form and served as a final testament from the master aware of his impending demise. He encouraged and advised his disciples on the essential practices they should adopt after his passing: “Therefore, Ānanda, be a lamp unto yourself, rely upon yourself alone; do not rely upon anyone else. Let the Dhamma be your lamp; let the Dhamma be your refuge, with no other refuge… Here, Ānanda, in this life, a monk who dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardently, clearly comprehending, and mindful, having subdued longing and distress within the world; …who dwells contemplating feelings in feelings… who dwells contemplating mind in minds… who dwells contemplating phenomena in phenomena, ardently, clearly comprehending, and mindful, having subdued longing and distress within the world. Thus, Ānanda, a monk is his own lamp, is his own refuge, without other refuge; having the Dhamma as his lamp, having the Dhamma as his refuge, with no other refuge. Those monks, Ānanda, who now or after my passing, will be their own lamps, will rely on themselves alone and not rely on any other, having the Dhamma as their lamp, having the Dhamma as their refuge, with no other refuge-these, Ānanda, are said to be supreme among my monks, those who are eager to learn.” The word ‘dīpa’ can mean both ‘lamp’ and ‘island,’ hence it can be translated as: “Be a torch unto yourself and go forth alone,” or “Build an island unto yourself.”
In this unique and pivotal instruction, the Buddha emphasized two key points: be your own lamp, rely upon yourself, not depending upon anyone else. Take the Dhamma as your lamp, take the Dhamma as your refuge, without depending on anything else. These principles may be seen as a true reflection of the life of seeking, practicing, and stabilizing the teachings, based on his own experiences and encompassing the entirety of the Dhamma he expounded over 45 years to guide his disciples.

True. You spoke for me. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you. Thanks.

Impressive présentation and very inspiring at that !
It makes one want to go and learn and practice.
Still, there is the idea of accumulating merit and the awaken one himself didn't come poor in this respect into existence.
I do believe in the power of prayers : they lift your spirits and enhance your compassion ; so do some profound visualizations engaged with the right attitude.
Again, the core of all lies in the mind itself, therefore we should cultivate it properly, thoroughly and with atmost care.

Every Buddha will reside in the Tusita Heaven before they descend to our world to become a Buddha.
One day in Tusita heaven is 400 years of earth time.
How long is the lifespan in Tusita heaven? 4000 years.
Maitreya Bodhisattva is now in Tusita heaven waiting for the right moment for him descend to our world.
He will be the fifth Buddha to manifest in our world.
4000 years in Tusita heaven is 5.67 billion years of earth time.
Another word, every 5.67 billion years, a new Buddha will appear in our world. One thousand Buddhas will manifest in our world and
    Shakyamuni Buddha is the fourth.
The last Buddha to manifest is Skandha Bodhisattva.
Buddha's affinity in our world will last for only 12000 years and the remaining period there will be no Buddhism.
You can see in the entire period of 5.67 billion years, the period without the Buddha's Teachings in the world is very very long.
Only a for a short moment of time one encounters the Buddha's Teachings.
In the opening of all Sutras this verse will always be at the front page :
Infinitely profound and wondrous is the Dharma, which is extremely difficult to encounter in a myriad of aeons.
Today I get to see, hear, receive and practice it.
I wish to perceive the unfathomable meaning from the Thus Come One.
*Extremely difficult to encounter the Buddha's Teachings and very difficult to attain a human form*

If you follow a method without finding out why you need it is just following another person’s experience and not your own, no matter whether he is a guru or a saint, etc. There’s a statement in Buddhism “There’s a Buddha in you” or something to that effect. Where’s the Buddha then? If one can fully and responsibly understand it totally, one does not need any religion….
You’re the world and the world is you.
If each one of us is responsible and understand this, then we know we created this whole mess and nobody can help us but ourselves. Truth is a path less way, not according to someone else’s. But most of us ignore this because we still feel it is others’ responsibilities….🙏🙏🙏

Yes this is true. The Buddha as best we can determine permitted an image of a foot to be used to say the if you follow my footsteps you see me. However he NEVER wanted to be worshiped as a God or Divine.
So Buddhist iconography was never designed to be worshipped, though many Buddhist do, but rather the iconography is a reflection of the reverence that a believer has for the Buddha and an expression of faith and not as a ritual that one does to get divine favor from the Buddha or the universe.
However, as the Buddha knew people often get caught in the net of nice images and say they cannot have the life that the Buddha had but this does not correspond to the beautiful words or actions of the Buddha.
In fact I love this channel in how they have approached these matters openly and honestly and many many people will be helped by their sincere efforts

Buddha never taught anything to anybody. Buddha explained to the people “what is happening inside their body” that they were not aware of it. That is called “the massage of the Buddha”. This massage spread over south east Asia by the way of telling “the Massage” to his close friend by someone. Person to person by saying the massage to his friend.
