The idea that there are no individual atmas separate from Brahman comes from the Upanishads (that were taught to Buddha by his 10 gurus). While Upanishads proclaim that Brahman is the only reality, Buddha didn't answer this question (he kept quiet when asked about it). Subsequent Buddhist scholars perpetuated the illogical idea that untimately there is nothing. Some Buddhists started to claim that Adi Sankara coipied Buddhism for his Advaita. In fact, Buddha himself elaborated on the Upanishads.

My understanding is that Buddha himself does not know if God exist. Hence, he says no to the believer, yes to the non-believer and silence to the truth seeker as he cannot definitely say yes or no and leaves it to the person to find out what he believes in. He is wise in his answer.

Ordinary people regard death as a big and frightening issue. Buddhist practitioners regard rebirth as the most important task. Buddhists don't fear death but they fear their next rebirth. Unfortunately, for ordinary people no matter how much they worry over death, can they not die? They are ignorance of reincarnation and the existence of the Six Realms. Because of their ignorance and stupidity, most of them are reborn into the Lower Three Paths. A saying : Bodhisattvas fear cause, ordinary people concerns of effects. Let's forget the personal God for awhile and look at the facts of material world in all its microscopic glory. For a person to reach self realisation, the perception and analysis itself has to be scrutinized for logic.. and that leads to the challenge of understanding biological processes of the brain, that rests on the physical interactions at the atomic level. An overdose of viagra could even turn the Pope into a pervert, chemicals like LSD and DMT could create hallucinations that can change the entire perception of what is real and what is an illusion. Anyone who has been administered a general anaesthetic will recall the disorientation experienced after gaining consciousness. What is really going on in our brains? What is determining our behaviour ? Spiritual and metaphysical visions that 'some' people have seen or felt and miracles that ornament the annals of human history have all made their way through sensory channels which owe their functional aspects to fundamental scientific rationale. Man has struggled for aeons to grasp the causality of his existence and that of the world around him. Religion has helped him dogmatize this endeavour with authoritarian commandments, forbidding to probe beyond the decree of a creator. The other approach has been that of philosophy, albeit with a reconciliatory stance of accepting Nature and her laws as dots to be joined to get the complete picture. But life goes beyond all descriptors and analyses.. it lives itself, without needing a supplementary document of truth/s. This "pure" living is of absolute importance to the individual, as that is sole function and purpose of life. Then System in its entirety needs to be fulfilled, in total self-absorbance. All mental activity including thoughts, feelings, expressions, emotions need to be negated. The senses should be put to rest and most importantly the cells of each organ need to feel their interconnectivity. The biggest dilemma to achieve this configuration is the two fundamental laws of Nature, that apparently seem to be in contradiction.. 1) That of achieving equilibrium 2) That of exploring possibilities These two are the basis of all order and disorder, respectively !!
