What are The 14 Questions Buddha Did Not Answer? What Did The Buddha Discover?

  • What did the Buddha discover? and Why Did the Buddha Refuse to Answer the 14 Metaphysical Questions.
    Do We Misunderstand the Buddha?
Not only those outside the tradition misunderstand, but also those within the tradition still harbor misunderstandings. Even during the Buddha's time, there were disciples who misunderstood him, with some misinterpreting the Buddha's teachings on the practice of contemplating the impurity of the body to the extent that they went on to commit suicide. Thus, occasionally in the scriptures, we hear the Buddha lament, ""I did not say that! I did not teach that, I did not advocate for the theory of annihilation and nihilism!"" It is natural for Western scholars to misunderstand the Buddha's teachings while studying Buddhism. We misunderstand the Buddha, then convey his teachings inaccurately, leading to misunderstandings among future generations. Many people mistakenly believe Nirvana to be eternal death. However, Nirvana represents the supreme happiness of those who are liberated. It is a happiness that we can experience here and now because of our freedom, especially freedom from concepts.

Buddhism is unimaginably philosophical. We all have to accept it. The level of understanding is upto the level of personal wisdom.

. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

Thank you for your insightful comment, Eternity. You’ve highlighted a significant point about the nature of philosophical and spiritual questions-often, the confusion and debate arise not from the questions themselves but from the constraints and assumptions embedded in language. This is particularly relevant when discussing the 14 unanswered questions by the Buddha, which he refrained from answering precisely because they encourage speculation rather than lead to practical enlightenment.
Your perspective that all questions have answers is thought-provoking. It invites us to consider whether the answers are always beneficial or if, in some cases, they may detract from a deeper, experiential understanding. In Buddhism, the emphasis is often on understanding through practice rather than theoretical knowledge. If you have more thoughts on how we can navigate these linguistic and conceptual challenges, I’d love to hear them. Let’s continue to explore how words shape our understanding and sometimes limit our comprehension of deeper truths.

Everything is subject to change. We ourselves change. There are encounters and departures, births and decay. Clinging to anything unstable is suffering. The Buddha's path is to train the mind to be constantly aware of change and to understand the reality of emptiness. When you are happy, understand that it will not last long. When you are suffering, understand that it will not last long. Let go and understand it. This is Buddhism.

Four reasons why people are suffering.
    1. People suffer because their mind is always floating, unable to settle down and remains calm.
    2. People suffer because they don't even a have even little bit of wisdom.
    Without wisdom, issues will multiply.
    3. People suffer because they don't have way to overcome personal issues, resolve family issues or issues affecting social life and the world.
    4. People suffer because they don't know how to unfold their wisdom.
Without wisdom, there will be no happiness, only sufferings.
    Wisdom will neutralise all situations.
    🙏🙏🙏

There are three main types of suffering according to Buddha's classification as follows, including cause and process. To understand clearly, please take the time to watch this video.
      1. Objects of pleasure (Joy) ➡ Greed ➡ Attachment ➡ Suffering from change.
      2. Unpleasant objects (Suffering) ➡ Anger ➡ Attachment ➡ Suffering after suffering.
      3. Neutral object (Neither suffering nor happiness) ➡ Delusion ➡ Attachment ➡ Conditioned suffering
The search for an object of pleasure to replace the neutral object (delusion) can lead to encountering an object of pleasure, leading to altered suffering; Encountering unpleasant objects leads to suffering upon suffering; Encountering another neutral object leads to suffering as described.

The problem described around 15:00 is due to people not recognizing the difference between dukka vedana (suffering) and dukka lakkhana (more akin to emptiness, but not directly accessible). Vedana (feelings) can be dukkha (suffering), sukha (comforting), or neutral. But all of these have dukkha lakkhana

    1. What is kamma?
The word “kamma” has two meanings, depending on context. Primarily, it means intentional actions in thought, word, and deed [§1]; secondarily, the results of intentional actions-past or present-which are shaped by the quality of the intention behind those actions [§2].
    2. How do actions determine results?
Skillful intentional acts-those that would lead to no harm for yourself or anyone else-tend toward pleasant results. Unskillful intentional acts-those that would lead to harm for yourself or others, or both-tend toward painful results [§16]
It’s important to emphasize the word tend here, as there’s no ironclad, tit-for-tat deterministic connection between an intentional act and its results. One of the Buddha’s images for kamma is a seed [§§19,47]. When you plant a bitter melon seed, it’ll tend to produce a bitter melon vine. When you plant a grape seed, it’ll tend to produce a grape vine. You can’t expect a grape seed to produce a bitter melon vine, or a bitter melon seed to produce a grape vine. That much is certain. But as to whether either seed will produce a strong, healthy vine depends on more than just the health of the seed. The soil, the sun, the rain all play a role, and then there’s the possibility that the seed might be damaged or destroyed by a fire, eaten by an animal, or squeezed out by plants growing from other, stronger seeds in the field surrounding it.
In the same way, when you plant a “kamma seed,” it’ll tend to give pleasant results if it’s skillful, and painful results if it’s not. For instance, acts of generosity, over the long term, tend to lead to wealth; taking intoxicants tends to lead to mental derangement. But how strong those results will be and how long they will take to ripen will depend on many factors in addition to the original actions: the actions you’ve done before, the actions you’ve done after, and in particular, the state of your mind when the results are fully ripe [§11].
In fact, this last factor-how your mind acts around the ripening of old kamma seeds-is the most important factor determining whether you suffer from those results. If your present actions-your new kamma-are unskillful as they engage with the results of old kamma, you can suffer even from the results of good past kamma. If your present kamma is skillful, it can minimize the suffering that would come from bad past kamma. For instance, if you treat the pleasure coming from past good kamma as an excuse for pride or selfishness, you’re going to suffer. If you treat the pain coming from an unskillful action as an opportunity to comprehend pain so as to release yourself from its power, you’ll suffer much less.

The individual soul is just a relative phenomenon, like in Buddhism. The Atman doesn't generate karma!!! Karma is generated in a subtle body that rules a body, mind, and prana. Thank you for sharing your perspective. It’s true that the Buddha’s teachings have often been subject to various interpretations, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. The Buddha encouraged his followers to question and test his teachings rather than accepting them blindly. This approach is meant to foster personal understanding and insight.
If you feel there are specific aspects of the Buddha’s teachings or historical accounts that have been misunderstood or misrepresented, it would be great to discuss these further. Clarifying these points can help us all gain a deeper, more accurate understanding of his teachings and their implications for modern life. Please feel free to share more about what you think has been mistaken or overlooked. Such discussions are valuable for everyone interested in these teachings.

Buddha declares remarkably "the 62 kinds of wrong views" that is not His teaching and the reason and why to His discipels. (DN- 1. Brahmajala`:Sutta) Although many people ask Buddha but the answers are not the same because of questioners' qualities. Buddha has already taught his discipels remarkable doctine(on the roots and causes of wrong views) in detail. If someone want to know the answers for those questions, study it.

Thank you for highlighting the Buddha’s teachings on the ‘62 kinds of wrong views’ as detailed in the Brahmajala Sutta, @wint7031. This sutta indeed offers a comprehensive look at various incorrect perceptions and assumptions that can lead to misunderstanding and suffering. It’s fascinating how the Buddha adapted his teachings based on the specific needs and abilities of his questioners, which reflects his deep understanding and compassion.
Your point that those interested in deeper insights should study these teachings directly is well-taken. It underscores the importance of engaging with the texts themselves to gain a fuller understanding of Buddhist doctrine and its practical applications. For anyone looking to understand the roots of wrong views and how to overcome them, the Brahmajala Sutta is indeed an essential read. If you have any specific passages or concepts from this sutta that you found particularly enlightening, please share them. It would be great to discuss these teachings further and explore their relevance in our lives today.

The Buddha did not answer the 14 questions for the simple reason that they cannot be explained intellectually. He knew that his students, the brighter ones, would eventually develop the faculty of Bodhi, or using the English word closest in meaning, insight. However, to define it more closely, it is instant comprehension, an 'Eureka' epiphany. I suppose one could also say it is like a true intuition. There is also the problem of the direct experience of Nirvana (Samadhi) being a state of Bliss. This is simply not true. Mystics, who have experience this beautiful blissful condition, because of lack of knowledge (due to the lack of true fully-awakened Buddhas), assume it is the final goal. It is not. The Ultimate Reality, MIND's own consciousness is a thought-free Plenum - Void; consequently there is no possibility of bliss being possible there. To experience Bliss, or any other condition, requires that there is an 'I' to have the experience. To borrow Hindu terminology, the Blissful experience is Kalpa-Samadhi, that is Samadhi with 'seed'. One still has to travel the path of Asparsa Yoga to 'kill' the 'I'. One becomes a true Buddha only when Nirvikalpa-Samadhi, Samadhi without 'seed' occurs, when the full plenum-void is experienced, when the 'I' vanishes and full Awakening occurs. Blessings, Love, Peace, Compassion and Goodwill to all sentient beings.

Thank you, @light-bringer294, for your deeply insightful comment. You’ve beautifully articulated why the Buddha chose not to answer the 14 classic questions, emphasizing the limitations of intellectual understanding in grasping the truths of spiritual experience. Your explanation of Bodhi as instant comprehension-or an ‘Eureka’ moment of insight-is particularly enlightening and helps clarify the nature of true spiritual awakening.
Your distinction between different states of Samadhi adds a valuable layer to our understanding of Nirvana and the journey toward it. The concept of Nirvikalpa-Samadhi, as you described it, represents the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice, where the sense of ‘I’ dissolves and one experiences the ‘full plenum-void,’ free from any trace of self.
Your thoughts provide a rich perspective for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of Buddhism’s ultimate teachings about consciousness and reality. We appreciate your blessings and the compassionate spirit in which you share your knowledge. If you have more insights or sources that could further illuminate these topics, please continue to share. Your contributions are truly enriching to our community.

Your observation highlights the unique way the Buddha addressed certain profound questions-by not giving a direct answer, he invites us to explore deeper understandings and encourages us to focus on practical wisdom that leads to enlightenment. This method teaches us that sometimes the path to knowledge involves embracing the mystery rather than resolving it. So, why do you use Buddha's, when you have your own? I challenge buddhists often because Buddhists are followers, not finders, it's called dogma for a reason, even Buddha made reference to this, awaken to the Bliss of Soul

That's what you learnt or know , but Buddha himself finding how to end this life cycles (born as a child crying (suffering), old become sick (crying bcuz suffering from pain) and die (crying bcuz of suffering from leaving all behind including love one). Simple to say living is a trouble than happy. After he knows everything is just temporary, he start the journey to find out the answer how to end this cycle life and get the answer become God(remember even god got sick and died from sick after that he end the life cycle have peaceful). Well, some Buddha may be different from what I telling. Bcuz even the same Buddhist , will have different story.

It´s important to know that there is existence after death. We cannot give definite answer, but reverse-engineer through drug trips (DMT) and NDEs. Because otherwise, it results in fatal wrong interpretations like that existence and consciousness is only bound to the material body. And hiding this kind of information intentionally could also mean shady intent (-> soul trap).

    • @EgoPodcastenglish
      @EgoPodcastenglish  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, @segoili. You’ve touched on a deeply intriguing aspect of the ongoing debate about the nature of consciousness and what, if anything, lies beyond death. The exploration of near-death experiences (NDEs) and the effects of substances like DMT has indeed opened up discussions that challenge the conventional view that consciousness is solely a product of the physical brain.
Your point about the potential consequences of disregarding non-material explanations of consciousness is noteworthy. It invites us to consider a broader spectrum of possibilities and the implications of our understandings. While the scientific community continues to explore these phenomena, it’s crucial for discussions like ours to remain open and inclusive of various perspectives.
It’s important for all of us to engage with these topics thoughtfully and responsibly, acknowledging the limits of our current understanding while remaining curious about the unknown. If you have more information, studies, or personal insights into this topic, I encourage you to share them. Such discussions can help us all expand our views and perhaps come closer to understanding the profound mysteries of existence and consciousness.

@@EgoPodcastenglish yes i had some experiences and happenings, but for other persons they are in the end nothing more than stories, so not really helpful. Even i myself am often not sure if some things are real rememberings or placed thoughts by external entities.
I think i know who the soul of my girlfriend is because the dying person back in the days told me that we would meet again. She even told me the town where we would meet again. That rises questions for me, because this did happen, but it required some specific choices that, if i didn´t make them, i wouldn´t have gone to that city. So for me it looks like life is predeteminded like a film.
I think i remember the talk between me and the creatorgod before incarnating here. I remember that in times when i daydreamed as a child, i was mostly communicating with entities in the astral. The teachers hated that, daydreaming always stood in my assessment as a negative point in early school. I remember being observed as a baby by little entities that looked a bit like the cartoon "powerpuff girls". Small, child-like with huge eyes.
Then one of my cousins suddenly at the age of 20 started to see dark entities that follow and attack her. She ended in psychatry. 10 years later i came across the archon / shadow beings topic from Carlos Castaneda with made me think if what she saw was maybe real.
Since then, i´ve read a lot and at the moment i think the soultrap theory is the truth. This really makes sense. But sadly there is no proof and it´s barely possible to find a real proof.
I´m still searching for 2 people with a parallel NDE or parallel DMT drug trip who interact with each others or at least observe the same things. This would be as close to a proof as possible that there is an astral world beyond the material.
The fact that it seems we are not meant to know and that there is so much evil in the world while a huge amount of people try to influence us to think positive about life, leaves a very ungood feeling in me. I think that if there is a non-material world beaond matter and our real being / soul is non-material, we have a right to know.

I think you are confused about impermanence.
Impermanence isn't about things constantly changing. Did the Buddha ever say that? This is later commentarial development.
In fact, if things were constantly changing, you wouldn't make sense of your existence/experience. However, things do have some level of stability. But that apparent stability is based on shaky grounds. What it depends on can cease at any moment. That is impermanence. And this is why what it impermanent is also suffering: things we rely on can cease at any moment.
Let's take our consciousness. Do we experience consciousness as this flickering constantly changing phenomenon? No. To us, consciousness is kind of permanent. However it relies on a basis which we cannot control and which can cease at any point: this living breathing body-mind complex. Should anything happen to our body (heart attack, suffocation, thrombosis, etc.), this seemingly permanent consciousness would cease right there and then (as we currently know it, let's set aside the notion of rebirth in this discussion).
This is an inescapable truth : we must live while our ego and consciousness depend on a basis which we do not control, did not ask for and which can cease at any instant. Is keeping this in mind pleasant or unpleasant? Unpleasant, terrifying!
Where does the escape from this lie then? In recognising that nothing in our subjective experience is "us" or belongs to us, it's never been so, we were just confused. These five aggregates are like borrowed goods. They can be taken away from us at any point. They rely on unownable and impermanent bases by dependant origination.
The most fundamental dependency is at the basis of the chain of dependent origination : consciousness and phenomena (name and form) being co-dependant. We think we have a consciousness, that it is 'our' consciousness. However, consciousness doesn't have an existence of its own, it relies on phenomena to be perceived. Nothing to perceive, no consciousness. It doesn't have an independent existence. Yet, phenomena also don't have an independent existence, they too rely on smth else. That smth else is consciousness. This is why nothing is permanent or ownable. Impermanence and dependency is at the very basis of 'our world" (as perceived by our mind).
This has nothing to do with things constantly changing. Things constantly changing do not force you to relinquish ownership of the 5 aggregates.
There' s no need to contemplate things ceasing or constantly changing to see and understand impermanence. The fact that things manifest is proof of their impermanence. If they were permanent, they wouldn't manifest, they would always be. Hence, what is subject to origination is all subject to cessation.
    Best wishes!

When Allah, the Lord of the worlds, was alone, He had no companion, no associate, no identity. He was the hidden treasure of justice. With the intention of self-recognition and self-manifestation, He created the creation from the light of His essence, flashes, and rays, and created the blessed light of Ahmad (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ). Through that light, He created the Throne and the Chair, the Tablet and the Pen, the heavens and the earth, and everything else. At that time, fire and water, earth and air, in other words, the existence of any basic element of creation did not exist. Therefore, the light of Muhammad ﷺ was the first and fundamental creation. No witness was present to the mystery of this creation other than Allah Himself. Just as children do not know the secret of their parents' creation, the angels did not know the secret of their own creation. Even the chief of the angels, Hazrat Jibrail (Gabriel) (peace be upon him), was not fully aware of the reality of Muhammad ﷺ. He only saw a star rise seventy thousand times, after every seventy thousand years. And seventy thousand times after that, he did not see it in a submerged state. The star rose five hundred and forty million years ago in a visible state. Only in the form of dialogue did the angel Jibrail (peace be upon him) become fully aware of Muhammad ﷺ. He was not aware of the reality in nature.
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gained the vision of Allah in the Night Journey, he saw the presence of Allah when he ascended alone to the sixth heaven. At that time, Musa (Moses) (peace be upon him) had witnessed his company. At the request of Musa (peace be upon him), he had gone alone to the court of Allah nine times to reduce the number of prayers of the Ummah. Externally, Musa (peace be upon him) saw his mother and father, but in reality, Musa (peace be upon him) worked secretly and openly for the manifestation of the light of Allah (Tafsir-e-Saavi). Six thousand years ago, on Mount Sinai, he could not bear the majesty of Allah's light and fell unconscious. Today, when he saw the blessed face of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the light of that majesty during the Night Journey, Musa (peace be upon him) woke up from his deep sleep with renewed aspirations. Therefore, he was able to gain the vision of Allah through the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was the beloved of Allah, the mirror of Allah's vision (Mishkat Sharif). In this mirror, the light of Allah is reflected, and at that time, it was possible to show, just as a solar eclipse can be seen through a projector, not with the naked eye.
In the Mishkat Sharif, Sufi Sultan Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Mostafa is the mirror of Allah's hand,
Munakhash door to door, goes away Khodast.”
Meaning: "The Prophet Mustafa [ﷺ] is the mirror of Allah's luminous manifestation. In that mirror, everything about the holy journey of Allah is reflected and manifested." This spiritual doctrine of Maulana Rumi primarily emanated from the information about the Prophet received by Musa (peace be upon him) during his prophetical journey.
From these two events, it is understood that to inaugurate the reality of Muhammad ﷺ, information must be gathered from Jibrail and Musa (peace be upon them) and seen through their eyes. When seen from the perspective of humans, he appears just like us. Abu Jahl and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them) both saw the Prophet ﷺ. The former saw him with the eyes of disbelief, so he said, "He is just like us, a common man." The latter saw him with the eyes of faith, so he said, "Muhammad is not like any other human being" (Qasidah Burdah by Imam al-Busiri). Subhanallah!
In the case of the Hur, the difference between faith and disbelief is seen. There is no doubt about Allah. Some people try to weigh the Prophet by standing on their toes, while others weigh themselves against the Prophet's toes. The water of the ocean cannot be measured with a sip. When measured, the water of the ocean will not decrease. But the sip will perish. So I said - where Hazrat Jibrail (peace be upon him) and Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) were unable to comprehend the full manifestation of the reality of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ - where are we?

TOO MANY meditation images ... LOL ... talk about ignorance.
"After Buddha's passing away, monks and nuns only emphasized meditation; there was no interest in studying the teachings." Anam Thubten
"The location of the truth of the Great Perfection is the unfabricated present; not a hair of which has been forced into relaxation through meditation." Jigme Lingpa
Buddha DID NOT Awaken by way of meditation ... Siddhartha was near dead from meditation when a young girl named Sujata (likely a dakini) offered Him some food (perhaps rice cooked in milk). Some say a state of appreciation filled Him from this meal, and others as He recovered His physical strength, through a state of appreciation, through which He realized the nature of Dependent Origination from which suffering arises. Bodhi was unveiled by way of Appreciation, and thus removing the veil that obscures the way things really are.
    Buddha's do not meditate.
Hui Neng (the 6th Patriarch) said that meditation is unnecessary, and warned that such practice can easily become a narcotic.
"Do you think you can clear your mind by sitting constantly in silent meditation? This makes your mind narrow, not clear." - Lao-Tzu Huahujing
