      Thank you Karen. And Spooky knows it for sure. He has us trained very well. He will come and get us and go to his favorite place and wait to get brushed. He loves it. But his brother Dinky taught him how to do it after I taught Dinky how to drop for a belly rub. Wow did a create something there. At least we get lots of stretching for us LOL

    Wow I thought by myself how are you going to make a bowl out of a flat piece of wood or how are you going to make segments from these awesome shapes of wood. Well you really surprised me Garry. What an amazing and magnificent bowl.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Kobie. You can do the same with a flat board and a band saw. But need to have 2 half rings and I was concerned with the glue up after doing it that way. This gave the rings a better chance of lining up. At least I think it was better.
      Thanks for watcing,

    Hi Gary... oh my goodness... this one is just amazing.... I couldn't think how you were going to manage it... then you made a flat board and I was even more confused... very very clever... well done... great to see Spooky too ... take care...All the best.....Andy

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Andy, It is pretty easy once you understand the concept. On large patterns at work I would sometimes cut large canted staves and even segments that way. Not that often but it worked there as well.
      Spooky is pretty excited about it after I told him he is a star lol

    SUPERB!!!
    You what's been rolling around in my head, Papa Gary? To have you and Phil "Uncle Phil" Anderson, collaborate on a turning! One guy picks the piece of wood (sight unseen), and turns the outside; then send it to the other guy (sight unseen), who'll turn the inside, as well as choose/apply the finish. I think that kind of approach (no brainstorming, or comparing notes beforehand), would demonstrate/illustrate the raw talent, and artistic creativity, of both your unique turning styles; along with sending the viewership into the upper stratosphere, for die-hand fans of both channels (like myself). I don't know, Papa G: what do you think?
    Dwayne

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Dwayne, I am sure it would be fun. The thing of it is after turning the outside it does not leave a lot of choices on the inside. Although what I just finished was a piece Phil gave me. The outside was a struggle and I almost joked about sending it back to Phil.
      Food for thought,
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

    • @Henry_Little

      @@ThePapa1947
      Understood, Papa G; but the would be the beauty of the challenge. We would get to see how the wood 'speaks' to the other woodturner, after receiving the 'raw' initial turning, from the other woodturner. If you'd like to really see this concept applied to it's fullest extent: do two pieces- you start one, that Uncle Philly finishes; then he starts one, that you then finish... Wow, think of the possibilities? 🤔 I think it would be a friggin' awesome challenge!!!🤯
      P.S.S. - I think both styles are uniquely different, but complimentary. You both let the wood reveal what it wants to be: you guys could easily finish a piece of each other's work, and I'd lay anybody odds, that both would be the bomb!💣

    My garage suffers from what I call "Horizontal Surface Disease". Every horizontal surface grows a covering of scrap lumber, misplaced tools and assorted debris. This makes me want to go clear off my CNC and lathe and try something new. Thanks. Amazing job!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well thank you so much. Happy you liked it but I am wondering if your disease did not spread to my shop. Every flat spot I have becomes a bench. I have 2 band saws next to each other and I move the wood from one side to the other depending on which one I want to use. I wonder if I should just put the wood away LOL
      So you have a CNC? Well you sure could do this. What sort do you have. Mine are both milling machines and have considered getting rid of one and get a CNC router.
      Thanks for watching,

      @@ThePapa1947 I have 1 1/3, roughly, of a 3 car garage. The balance is all junk we don't seem to be able to part with, but our heirs will no doubt find a dumpster for it all in short order. Before that time, I'm planning a big shed for the side yard. Once the junk moves out there, my wife thinks we'll finally get a car in the garage. I'm seeing a larger shop. Maybe we can squeeze in both.
      My CNC is a Shapeoko 3XL. Had it a few years now. Nice mid-sized unit. I built a dedicated cart for it, 54 wide by 23 deep. Still needed an enclosure and better dust control that me waving shop vac hose at it. A bigger than expected retirement bonus got me a copy of Aspire to run it with. Amazing CNC software but certainly not cheap. As if that didn't get weird enough, I got a 7-watt laser from J-Tech Photonics and strapped that to the CNC Z axis. Using LightBurn software on that. Bit more of a learning curve but wow is it fun to mess with. Again, when I can find it all. We have a "2-month" reno of our backyard that is now past 5 months and counting, so lots of backyard stuff had to come inside off the patio because there is no longer a patio. Add that to my persistent case of "HSD" and I cant find anything. My table saw is now a pyramid-shaped mound in the middle of the floor. Lathe cart is buried in gardening tools. Ditto the CNC cart. Keep saying I need to go clean it up but today I'm under the kitchen sink again. Replaced the faucet last night but there's now a small leak from the RO water spigot. Rats.

    I am so happy to finally see someone address the horrible colour bleeding from Padauk. I'm new to woodturning and my first segmented piece was a little birdhouse ornament made to look like a brick house using Padauk and Ash. In the end, the Ash is basically a lighter shade of Padauk, no matter what I did, the colour kept bleeding and I finally gave up and embrace my pale orange 'grout'. I asked other woodturners if there was a secret to stopping it, but no one seemed to share my issue, at least now I can try using Padauk again and will hopefully have similar results as you did!
    I think this bowl turned out amazing, I can't wait to see what else you come up with!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much. As long as you do not put a wet coat on from the start I promise it will not bleed. Very light over spray. And you do not have to wait long for the next coat. I did a Dizzy bowl that had Padauk next to Maple and I ended up sanding all of the finish off and started over. My little Padauk brick house vase had black veneer so it was not a probably to wipe on Tung oil.
      Thanks for watching and happy this was able to help you.
