  • Intolerance of uncertainty is the main "fuel" that drives the worry engine. If you worry a lot, there's a good chance that intolerance of uncertainty plays a big role in that worry and associated anxiety. Intolerance of uncertainty is a well-known factor that contributes to excessive worry in Generalized Anxiety Disorder and worries more generally. This video explains the concept of intolerance of uncertainty as akin to a "psychological allergy" that leads people to experience a lot of anxiety and worry in response to relatively low levels of uncertainty. I also discuss how intolerance of uncertainty increases worry and anxiety by acting as a lens through which a person views the world, resulting in the person always considering all of the negative possible outcomes from an uncertain situation and failing to recognize the possible neutral or positive outcomes that could arise as well.

    Oh THANK YOU!. I am struggling with suicidal ideation because of hoarding issues. I feel terror worrying about how I will feel when my things are taken away. It is nearly impossible to find someone who really understands that intolerance of uncertainly is at the root of this for many or most. I wish I could find ANY therapist to help me using the insight demonstrated here. I appreciate having this morsel of help so much.

    This makes a lot of sense. I just had an anxiety attack, I was worrying that I wasn't filling in my weekly anxiety assessments properly. It sounds so ridiculous it's comical 🤣, but the reaction is anything but comical. I get these reactions a lot. It drains the self confidence out of me, it's like having a permanent hole in the bottom of my self confidence tank.

      I hear this type of thing a lot. I actually tell my clients not to get overly concerned or spend too much time ensuring that they are doing their self-monitoring homework "correctly". Just do it and tolerate the uncertainty that it's been done properly, which we review in the session.

    The more I practice this, the more it steers towards gratitude. Tolerating uncertainty for me means an increased capacity to tolerate some suffering without tilting. And as the anxiety component decreases, my outlook becomes more holistic. I don't have to worry about taking my temperature all the time to make sure I'm feeling good because I know it's ok to have uncertainties. The world is not going to collapse if I'm uncomfortable. And I can be grateful.

    Wow. I've never resonated with a video more than this one right now. The past week I've experienced constant flaring of worrying and anxiety from uncertainty (of the fear of potentially contracting COVID-19). I've been so worried and stressed despite displaying no key symptoms, however I feel I am very health anxious, which leads me to expend all my energy worrying about how I'm constantly feeling. This has caused me to have a week full of constant tension, and has completely taken my focus away from me. All I want to know is that I'm okay and will not be sick - this is purely because my lens has been strictly negative: I have this internal worry that the worst possible outcome will surely happen to me if I would contract this virus. Even though logically I see that where I'm younger in age at 23 years old and do not know of any underlying health conditions, it feels like my logic voice and worry voice internally are two separate things. This fear and worry has caused me to go to the hospital yesterday from immense panic and feeling exhausted from an entire day of being extremely elevated on edge. I have this worry that I will not be able to go back to my normal self for a prolonged period of time - essentially until I wait out a number of days for it to be "impossible of being sick" (as a sense of certainty). It feels that my stress levels have been sustained for the past few days across the entire day, and I can't seem to simply "breath and relax" as everyone recommends as I then overthink about how I'm breathing or that funny feeling in my chest that suddenly appears. I feel that I intrusively fear and worry about the absolute worst possible outcomes in uncertain situations regardless of logic.

    Hello thanks again for making these videos. Would you be able to make a video specifically on anxiety around the pandemic? That seems to be the source of my anxiety and worry these days!

    • @DrRamiNader
      @DrRamiNader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you are finding the videos helpful. I've had a few people ask me to make a video specific to anxiety related to the pandemic, but I've been a little reluctant to do so because, to be perfectly honest, I don't know enough about it. I don't know if any psychologist does. What I've been doing with my clients who are struggling with anxiety and worry regarding the pandemic is using these worry management skills and applying them to worries regarding COVID-19. Things like doing tolerating uncertainty experiments involving not wiping down groceries with lysol wipes when they bring the groceries home. Maybe it's just that I haven't gotten my own head around what is "reasonable pandemic anxiety" vs "pathological pandemic anxiety", but I don't feel I'm in a position to comment with any sort of expertise related to the pandemic, other than taking my usual tools and applying them to pandemic anxiety. I hope that makes sense.

    whelp....I guess part of this intolerance of uncertainty is trying to control others. Trying to control doesn't work. And my perpetual attempts to control tells my significant others that they are always coming up short, cause my worries and obsessions can't be solved by them. Lots to work on. But at least I am beginning to work on solvable issues instead of living in dreamland.

    • @DrRamiNader

      Trying to control the world and other people is a common manifestation of intolerance of uncertainty.

    Thank you for this content! Im curious as to what is happening with people who are highly intolerant of uncertainty, but also very disorganized. Is that a dichotomy, or is there something else going on?

    • @DrRamiNader
      @DrRamiNader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question. Sometimes the disorganization can be a manifestation of intolerance of uncertainty. For example, if the person is not certain how things should be organized, they may not try to organize things out of fear that they might do it wrong, which then perpetuates the disorganization. It's a form of avoidance.

    Hi Rami,
    Is this intolerance associated with certain personality types? For example wanting to deliver good work (perfectionism), will lead to overworking to eliminate the uncertainty of a good response?
    Can we discover these traits in ourselves, to eliminate worry?
    Furthermore, is the body response to worry also associated with uncertainty of anxiety? Or has this something to do with the 'amount of danger' that we interpret within the uncertainty?
    Cheers

    • @DrRamiNader
      @DrRamiNader  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Perfectionism is very commonly associated with intolerance of uncertainty, because if you know you have done something perfectly, it eliminates any concern about having made a mistake or any negative uncertain outcome. However, just like it is impossible to completely eliminate uncertainty in the world, it is impossible to do everything perfectly as well.
