Fiat 500 MOT Failure; rear brake imbalance, diagnose and repair

- Today we have a common occurrence of one of the many Fiat 500’s that need some attention. This particular Fiat failed its recent MOT on rear brake imbalance. This is where the rear brakes are not braking evenly across an axle.
We’ll be stripping down, diagnosing and repairing the fault(s) and once repaired will then put it through the brake roller tester to confirm the repair.

Regarding the pipe twisting when undoing the flare nut I’ve had this problem my solution was to just unbolt the wheel cylinder from the backing plate and held a spanner on the flare nut and just turned the wheel cylinder off the nut/pipe and fittings in reverse and then just nip up the nut

@greenautoservices passed the MOT, but should have used axle stands. The car fell off the scissor jack and trapped my arm when I put the wheel back on. Broken wrist. Silly boy.
AH NOOO, as happy as I am to hear it went through the MOT I'm more sorry to hear you've injured yourself. Don't be discourage but very small slap on the broken wrist for not using axle stands. Wish you a speedy recovery my friend and appreciate you keeping in touch. All the best
Good video . Only thing different I would have done would be to replace the drums as well. They are cheap as chips.
I had same issue on a seicento..cylinders were fine.fitted new shoes adjusted everything still failed on retest!! So just swapped drums from left to right and imbalance was gone.
Thanks for getting I touch. Very please you managed to resolve the issue. I've never found the need to swap the drums to resolve an issue but you can't argue with results. As long as everything does what it's supposed to then happy days. Well played :)

Right. My van failed on imbalance in May now I've fitted the new master cylinder and rear brake cylinders . Change all the fluids . Cleaned and checked the shoes and also bleed the whole system with new fluid. Sorted out the handbrake.Took it for another MOT this morning and failed again on the same thing. If the garage says I need new rear brake cylinders I know they are taking the piss.
Hi Mike, sorry to hear about the situation. What van do you have? If everything has been replaced then the only issue it may be (depending on the vehicle) is that you may have a brake load valve under the vehicle, which is normally at the back. Depending on the load that’s in the back, the valve compensates for the load and allows for heavier braking. If the valve is seized or faulty in any way, that will have an effect on brake imbalance. A lot of the time it’s just seized and you can free it up with wd40. Definitely keep me posted

@@mikeraphone6745 I am almost 100% certain there will be a brake load sensing valve. This would be the next logical step considering that the majority of the braking system has been replaced. They are open to the elements and get heavily corroded over time to the point where the lever that presses and releases the piston will completely seize. Fingers crossed 🤞
@@greenautoservices hope so . Thanks. I've seen an alloy branch box under the rear axle but there is no lever there to seize. Hopefully I will find something tomorrow when I have yet another look. Thanks mate .
@@mikeraphone6745 If it’s there, there will be a spring attached to the solid rear axle, which will then attach to a valve/brake line junction. You can always follow the brake line from the front to the back as the valve will be first before branching off to both rear drum brakes. Happy hunting 👍

Hi my truck failed on rear brake imbalance, Toyota hilux 2013. New brake shoes and wheel cylinder but still failed? In suggestions? Have took to mechanic to adjust but still failed. Could it possibly be the wheel cylinder not give right amount pressure or the brake drum itself? And is it possible to swap brake drums right one on the left etc?
Hi, sorry for the late reply but thank you for reaching out. Did the imbalance fail on the foot pedal or the parking brake? The first thing I would suggest is to make sure the newly fitted cylinders have been bled properly and there is 100% no air in the system. If you can categorically rule that out then ensure the drums are thorough cleaned of any contaminants and then rough up the surfaces with sand paper (both the shoes and drum linings). Then take it for a drive and really use the brakes to help bed the shoes into the drums. If this still doesn't go through, then you may have to see if the vehicle has a brake load compensator. I'm not sure if the Hiluxes do, otherwise you may be trying to find another issue. If the MOT results shows one side is more effective than the other then yes you can try and swap the drums over.....just make sure they go back to their original position unless you're going to renew them both. Process of elimination but your mechanic should be able to help.
