    I can't begin to tell you how long I've looked for a smoker design that I envisioned. Outstanding job!!
    Moving on to part 2 now, can't wait to see how you made the doors.

    Tips: Mix your dry ingredients (cement, sand gravel, etc...) first so that when you add your water you won't need to struggle mixing everything together. Use a hoe instead of bending over with a trowel when you mix as bending over is going to hurt your back. I usually mix my concrete in the wheelbarrow so I'm not leaning over at all. the mix ratio of dry to wet is 2:1 at first and then you just add a little water as you mix as there is a quick change from thick to thin and it is a pain adding more mix.
    Do your concrete work in the early morning so you have plenty of sunshine BUT the temp outside isn't too hot. Once concrete reaches 90F is starts setting and you should never add more water to make it workable because that'll compromise the strength as the chemical reactions are already starting.
    Also, you needed to use refractory mortar and bricks in order to have this last. You may have a couple or years at most with normal cement and bricks, but eventually the bricks will start cracking due to expansion and contraction from heat changes. If you live in a place that freezes, the bricks will break down even faster during winter time as the moisture will be soaked up into bricks and mortar and freeze. Ice expands and thus will break down bricks faster.
    I noticed you didn't add steel reinforcement (welded wire mesh gauge 12 or 14) to your concrete slab or etch a 2'x2' grid into the top of your slab. Concrete expands and contracts due to temp changes and humidity and will start cracking after the first winter. You also didn't compact the ground before adding the concrete slab.
    Not saying what you didn't was really cool. I wish peeps doing DIY would read up on the building specs and procedures available. That way whatever you make lasts longer and won't break from normal wear and tear.

    I just came across your video. Nope to see your next video soon. I’m from California and we do a lot of Santa Maria style bbq. I’m just getting into low n slow bbq. I’m building one out of 60 gallon air compressor tank “reverse smoker “ but I’m intrigued on the one you built. Very impressed. 👍🏻

    Starting with a half a brick on every other level, and compensating for the mortar mix were important tips that I am glad I learned from this video. Other points too, but these were key for me. About how thick would you say the mortar is. About a 1/2" or so? Thanks for the video. I "liked"

    Nice work man. When you were doing this did you ever think about putting a flume pipe on going from fire side to food? I know nothing about smokers but do want to go in on a project like you did. Would there be any downside to using a pipe with fire place flume on it?

    Dis yo vid is awesome. I don't evan mind da lingo. Another tip would be mixin' it in a bucket you can use a hand drill with a mixin' attachment to speed up the mortar / cement. I have a old brick BBQ in the backyard with a small opening and a bigger opening. I am thinking of converting it into a cooker smoker. Loved and Subb'd

    Why is the vent exchange was placed flushed to the bottom with the bricks on both chambers? The fire pit’s most highest heat will be on the top, the vent exchange should be placed at least 90% above the ground from where the fire pit will burn, I think this way you’ll get the most heat transfer efficiency to the other bigger chamber. Similar to offset smokers, where the fire pit is always below the food chamber.

    • @FromTheGroundUpDIY
      @FromTheGroundUpDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They hold up pretty good, the only thing is that the heat from the smoker discolors the brick. I recommend putting a layer of fire brick on the inside if you decide to make it. The fire brick will help keep more heat inside the smoker and will help with the discolor.

      I was having problems with keeping the temperature up but adding the chimney solved that problem. I do recommend using firebrick on the inside though. It will help keep heat inside the smoker.

    Not sure if you wore a mask or not but when mixing/cutting/drilling any concrete, mortar, grout, brick, or tile you want to wear a mask. These materials carry silica and any silica dust is extremely harmful for your health. If you knew this and wore a mask then disregard my comment
