Florida Long Haul | Piper Malibu Phoenix to Florida

  • There aren't many single engine pistons that can fly non-stop across the country and that's just one of the things I love about the Malibu. After an early morning departure from Phoenix, I make my way across the US toward Lake City Florida and a busy arrival.

      In addition to what Andre3K said, you no longer can get a Malibu, only the Mirage, and there's a huge difference. The Mirage uses a Lycoming IO-540 whereas the Malibu has a Continental IO-520, or upgraded to an IO-550. The Connies burn a LOT less fuel than the Lycs do, so your range is increased. Also, the VK Leasing fuel mod gives you I think 120 gallons of useable fuel. Plus, the Malibus are under $350,000 now for the most part, the last was made in 1988.

    Wow, nice video. Do we even use the word - "video" in this digital day? I'm a pilot who hasn't flown in close to 30 years. I feel ancient looking at your glass cockpit, IPad for weather/radar, all the information at your fingertips, etc...... I thought I had the cat's meow when I got the 2nd Navcom and ADF in the Piper Warrior back in the 80s. Didn't think you could get more high tech than a 2nd NavCom with glidescope. Mercy - now that I retired I was thinking about getting back into flying and buying a Tomahawk for funsy. But after watching this - I'm just too old and slow to adapt to all this high tech gadgets. Great video. Really enjoyed it.

    We are taking our Malibu out to Santa Monica the first week in June from Jackson, MS. With the long-range tanks it is easily doable with plenty of reserve. However, sine we have small kids, we are going to fly 3 hours to ABQ and spend a few days touring the area and then on to SMO. I did a trip from Portland to Jackson non-stop once and I regularly fly non-stop from Jackson to Plymouth Mass, so I know what you just did. Lol. Great video!

      @MalibuFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jack. Have a great trip to SMO. Not sure if you’ve been in there lately but watch your approach speeds closely as the 3500’ runway goes by pretty quickly. They also have an interesting departure clearance for pistons.

    • @malibujack4852
      @malibujack4852 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff, my company owns the Pilgrim Nuclear Station there. Since I am responsible for engineering oversight for our fleet, I regularly fly up there for meetings or to observe my staff. When I’m there, I love going to East Bay Grille! Great place.

    • @malibujack4852
      @malibujack4852 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Malibu Flyer, yes I was watching one of your Angel flight videos intently, as you departed KSMO! Interesting departure. I used to have a tie-down spot at Tipton (KFME) in Laurel, MD. That field is 3000 feet. I remember going in there once on an instrument approach with it snowing and a contaminated runway (about a quarter inch of snow on the runway) and despite being right on my numbers and touching down on the runway numbers, I used up every bit of runway to get her stopped. I think the book numbers for a contaminated runway are 2800 feet and I used all of them.

      @@malibujack4852 Very cool, Jack. I love the EBG! But I'll tell you what, 50 years ago, my mom was a big shot (ran the front of the house) at the restaurant in that same location. Next time you're there, find the oldest person working there and ask them if they were there when it was called McGrath's. That location has been hauling in the big bucks for as long as I can remember. Deservedly so. I go back there fairly often. Let me know when your next trip is. With any luck our paths could cross.

    Are you able to couple your autopilot to the visual approaches from the GTN? I noticed when you activated it, like my GTN, it didn’t give you the 3 nm waypoint. If I don’t select that waypoint, my autopilot (STEC 60-2) won’t couple the visual. Wonder if it is the same with your KIng AP.

    @pauldube6298 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just think of all the ones you're saving.
    As for your wish for Garmin Pilot to load all the waypoints on an approach, it's simple with Flight Stream once you bring it up on the 750.
    My Malibu also has a similar levitating bag phenomenon on long trips. :)

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul. I don’t have a FlightStream but have been considering the 510. Just so I’m clear, when I enter the procedure on the 750, that will automatically sync back to GP along with all of the relevant approach fixes and/or, a vector to final? If that’s the case, I’m sold! I’m just trying to work around all of the flight planning and filing quirks as compared to ForeFlight.
      Glad to hear that you have experienced the same phenomenon. I was wondering how I might explain that :).

    • @pauldube6298
      @pauldube6298 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MalibuFlyer I'd say it is semi-automatic. Any FP change you make on either the ipad or 750 will result in a prompt asking you if you want to sync which you may not always want to do. Its straight forward and fast. I was wondering if you've had a chance to play with increasing rpm to lower chts above FL210 yet or if your book says something different.

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul, that's automatic enough for me. Interestingly, I had forgotten about your RPM suggestion as I am rarely above FL190 anymore. I have a trip to DFW this weekend and that may present a good opportunity to try it.

    Fun video. Got worried on the hold instructions when you were being bounced around. Plus, you said 26 gallons remaining. Also, why load the visual approach PAST midfield downwind? IMO, although the outcome was successful, I think this trip requires a fuel/rest stop. The fine art of corner painting.

    I noticed that you set your pressurization at the destination field elevation plus 500’. Does it make a difference when the field is reporting 1000’ density altitude and the field elevation is at sea level?

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David. You know, I’ve always set it to destination plus 500 as soon as I nose over fo the descent as per my training but you raise a good question. I’ll ask around.

      @@MalibuFlyer The cabin altitude is set to reflect air pressure only. The density reflects air pressure further adjusted for temperature and humidity, but that additional refinement is irrelevant to the required pressure setting.

    Nice video. JAX approach was very helpful. Question: Why did you enter the visual approach into the NAV instead on just doing it without avionic aids?

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. I usually activate the visual approach simply as an additional source of situational awareness. In this case, it was pointless

      Wondering the same thing. With all that weather I would have just made that turn and get on the ground.

      I wondered the same thing too. Field was already in plain sight.

      @@blusky121 I was curious if, maybe, there was something the camera wasn't capturing. But with the airport in plain sight and convective activity in the area, It is time to land the airplane pronto.

      Hi Chris. I hadn't considered it until you mentioned it. I'll have to learn how to do it...

    Fun video buddy! Do you always load a visual approach or was this weather issue?

      If I have time, I usually load it just to watch it work...

      Understand! I think after that flight I might have told tower field insight and dive for it! Lol! Thanks again for the vid!!

    Stay on the yellow line. U had some good weather. U could do that flight old style with charts and no pc screens. Smooth operator.

    Not sure if it was editing, but it seems like you had your own personal controller looking after you. Earlier in the flight you mentioned your fuel reserves. What was your thought process when you couldn’t land Lake City and had to hold? Seems like you had a lot on your plate all at once. You made it look easy, though I am guessing your brain was running several scenarios.

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right. Due to the length of the flight, I had to edit down to just the most relevant and/or interesting portions. However, the JAX controller and the KLCQ tower controller we both extremely helpful. I have never had a center controller call the tower to pass on a "nice job" before so that was much appreciated. It did get busy pretty quickly with the fast moving weather and the last minute hold but I knew that with 2 hours of fuel, I had plenty of options. Seeing the airport was a big relief and it was a perfect right downwind setup.
