    Josh, another great video in all respects! One thing....from initial flight training - way back when. I was always taught to treat the prop the same as the proverbial unloaded gun....don’t trust it!

    • @Aviation101
      @Aviation101  3 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      I agree! A few people called that out in the comments here, and I appreciate the feedback. We check our magnetos before shut down after every flight to make sure the off position grounds them every time, but just like a firearm, you should always assume that it’s hot and ready to go. Learning and refining every day! Thanks for the feedback.

      @@Aviation101 I have a fear of flying and acrophobia. I was told that the best way of fighting with it is learning how flying works or what is happening, and I find your videos great, it definitely helps a lot. Thanks.

      Yeah my dad taught me to fear the prop lol, the only way I get close to it is to check for nicks or bends during my pre-flight. Not to mention me bonking my head into some of the bigger plane's props at the hangar I work at. I've been traumatized!

    Thanks everyone for the great feedback! This was a short, relatively last-minute flight. That morning, the plan was to put Peyton in the left seat and get her acquainted with basic stick-and-rudder flying in VFR weather, but the clouds just wouldn't lift. We were going to just scrub, but decided that since we already had the plane fueled and pre-flighted, lets just go do an IFR proficiency flight for myself. It was fun! Thanks for watching. Please leave any feedback you might have in the comments!

    The one thing I have admired for several years about your channel...... you make aviation appear much more accessible than others do. Whether in a King Air, SR22T, or a little Cherokee, there’s always a sense that you couldn’t be happier in any other plane at that time. I hope your voice to the next generation of aviators is listened to because it’s refreshing.

    At 12:30, I wanna add to what you said regarding getting your PPL. Once I got mine I felt like finally had a good understanding of aviation as a whole. Could not have been farther than the truth lol. Day after my checkride I flew my Grumman across FL from FXE to DAB and wow was that a learning experience. One of the best days of my life no doubt, but I was left with more questions about flying, weather, aircraft systems, than I had while I was a student. Very true. I got my PP about 25 hours after I bought my first airplane, a 172XP, and thought I knew what I was doing. But next 300 hours/2 years in that bird was a continual progressive learning experience. And the learning has never stopped, 500 hours later. A good pilot never stops learning.

    When I got my license in 93` as a 19 year old from the UK I did it in Georgia and check ride in Alabama in 20kt winds in PA28 Warrior was a challenge but got through it, that took me 10 weeks with intensive training being from abroad I had flight to catch. you could do it in Florida and get it done in 3-5 weeks if time is precious. its far to expensive in this modern age to continue flying like I did 20 odd years ago so had to let it go shame but so glad I achieved it when I did.

    I really like your desire to not only stay current, but more importantly stay proficient. I’m finally getting around to recurrence at night. It’s not unexpected that you won’t fly at night for extended periods. Night flying requires extra vigilance in EP locations to land and terrain you can’t see. Plus, you should be IFR to help with the flight. Having currency and proficiency always gives you options.

    I’ve been watching your channel for quite a while now and I always appreciate your safe practices you ademonstrate as well as use in your own flying. That said, as cool as it looks and as great 👍 camera angle as it gives, draping yourself across the prop of your airplane is not “safe practice”. Not everyone may be as responsible as you and always check their plane to make sure they don’t have a “hot” mag. We all know it just takes a prop kickback to spoil your day, or even end a life. What you did was not really wrong except you had a novice on the other side of the prop who could think 🤔 grabbing a prop is no big deal and maybe grab the wrong prop at the wrong time and hurt themselves or someone else. Always in instructor mode, Josh, always around a student, and always around yourself to demonstrate safe practices.. I always enjoy your videos and this one ☝️ was no different.

      I don't disagree! You're right, I do check the leads at the end of every flight to verify the "OFF" position on the switch does indeed ground both mags at the same time, but not very many people do that, and it's overall a good idea to just be in the habit of staying away from that prop. Good catch!

      Maybe Josh figured there was less risk from the prop, than from the smiling eyes?

      Steve Mowat I would have to agree, that could have been a major distraction for any young man 👨 in that position. And Josh, I really wasn’t trying to be a nit-picky know it all. I just Learned to fly during the prehistoric era of aviation and it wasn’t uncommon to have planes that required propping. Since I started flying at 14, I had that drilled into my head daily. You’re doing a great 👍 job! Keep it up and thanks 😊 for sharing your videos and knowledge.

    A few years ago I was flying ILS in to Pensacola in rain and heavy overcast. We came out of the overcast at 200 feet and just as we hoped the runway was right there. We were the last plane in due to weather. I was glad to be on the ground.
