    Your son brought back memories, one day we were up from the city staying on the family farm, after a few chores on Saturday, I said to my 12 year old we’re going to town as he approaches my minivan. I toss him the keys, he was freaked, but he did a great job driving farm roads into town to pick up a few things for dinner and drove home. he still talks about it and he’s 43.

      haha when I worked on a farm the 8 yr old drove the old pickup and tractors.....he used a stick to press the clutch on the tractor, 2 lo was just throttle pulling the hay wagon. He sat on phone books when he drove the pickup.

      I grew up on a wirking farm. I was forced to drive at around 8 or 9. Older brother wasn't at home and daddy needed help feeding the cattle. Hay bales stacked higher than the cab on an old round fenders P/U with 3 on the column. I had to sit on the edge of the seat and I was scared to death I was ginna pop the clutch and throw daddy off the hay. Driving the tractor was a breeze compared.

    One of my most fun memories is when I took my 15 year old daughter to a local snow covered parking lot to teach her how to drive in the snow, (turn into a spin, don't lock up your brakes, etc) and I was laughing and smiling the entire time. I had way more fun than she did I think and I'll never forget that. She is 37 now with 3 kids, enjoy your kids while they are little because they will not be little long. I enjoyed your video Craig, I feel EV's have a long way to go before they will ever be widely adopted. EV's are a lot more inconvenient to drive in general that their ICE counterparts are at the moment.

    • @paulsandgren8625
      @paulsandgren8625 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EV tech is improving at a pace unmatched by any other technology. It is really not that inconvenient once you learn the ins and outs of EV transportation. It is far less expensive to charge your EV at home. A 220v charger will charge any EV from 0 to 100% overnight. A 110v charger will be way longer than that. Charging at home is better for overall battery life. Supercharging to often cooks the battery and it will probable need replacing before 150000 miles. If seen EVs that only charge on home chargers with 300k miles and still going strong. Doing your homework is key to a good EV experience.

  • @hotswim
    @hotswim ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Craig from knowledge, the optimal way to charge is between 20% and 80%. The charging speeds decrease dramatically after 80%. Charging at home will be significantly cheaper. Please do a video on getting a level 2 charger installed at home and your dealership.

    The reason why it’s not braking early enough while in cruise control is because it probably doesn’t actually have adaptive cruise control. The radar up front is there just for the pre collision system. That’s because it’s a base trim Audi. I have the same thing on my Audi a3. If Adaptive cruise control is included it will have settings to adjust the distance when it starts
    braking. Which is typically located on the cruise control nob by the steering wheel.

    26:55 you used a lot of electricity to blast the heat...in an ICE that is waste energy that doesn't cost you anything. In order to produce heat it either has to scavenge it off the battery or use a heating element to create it. nothing consumes electricity more than a heating element (relatively speaking). Same as when you use defrost, I bet it has a drier/dehumidifier in it as well...

    Lots of great info from this video and I appreciate detail that you put into it.
    Wa
    One of the big takeaways that I get Is that, by in large, The infrastructure to support EVs on large scale is just not there yet. You mentioned Tesla opening up their charging stations to other cars but it also being very expensive. At what point do all of the manufacturers get together and create universal stations that are inexpensive to all no matter what type of EV they drive? You made mention of only three stations in the entire state of New Hampshire. That kind of sucks, especially if you find yourself in a low power situation out in the boonies somewhere. It's great that you now have the ability to charge it a Tesla station, but it what cost?
    I really think the Audi e-tron is a super cool car as are the Porsche and the Tesla but they're also way past the price point of the average consumer. The reason I mentioned that is because as people get into the EV scene they really need to do their homework in regard to charging stations if they don't have a Tesla. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks again for the great content

  • @aaronbritt2025
    @aaronbritt2025 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In 2015, I had a Leaf and never worried about the infrastructure because I always charged at home. The price is why it's NEVER worth it to charge publicly. It's less than gas, but still highly profitable for the charger company. This is why I believe charging stations, which take a smaller footprint than a gas station are going to be the new big investment. Soon, you'll see EV stations with convenience stores with no gas pumps. Most people don't have a charger when they get an EV. You're supposed to buy one. If you can afford a $100k car, you should be able to afford a charger. Plus, isn't NH one of the states with a charger rebate? Make sure your charging cable is plugged in to a 20A outlet, not a 15A.

    I had an Etron SUV. When you open the drivers door the car should shut off. The lights may go on when you get close to the car. The drive settings control the suspension, acceleration, steering and the efficiency settings. I traded my Etron for a BMW iX with 100 miles more range. Cold weather and driving style affect your range. The range meter is called a guess-o-meter for good reason. I do recommend a 240v charger maybe one at home and one at the shop. Good luck and feel free to reach out with any other questions.

      it'll be good in the spring, then soon as summer hits it'll go down again because it now has to cool the battery. In the winter it has to use energy to heat the battery. That's why you get reduced range then when you use the heat. Same as in the summer...turn on the a/c and watch your range drop. (most use a heat pump)

    Turn your heat off and see what happens to the range number when you cycle the heater. In my car the heater reduces the full range by 15 miles. Plus, the cold temps are not good for lithium ion batteries.

    Non-Tesla Ev charging between CT and NJ is horrible. There were only 4 high power fast chargers on my route and they are way off the turnpike and garden state parkway and most are hard to find. Also, the cost is way more than gasoline for an accord or civic. Cost me 38$ to charge 110 miles.

    So what's it going to cost to make the Tahoe go 0-60 in 3.1 seconds like the EV Audi does ? A supercharger probably. Then you have to be able to stop that, upgrade brakes. Tahoe comes stock with a horrible transmission need to do something about that after the upgrade!
    And of course batteries don't do well in the winter, so how better would the charging be in better weather ?

    Get a level 2 charger at your house and you'll be happier with it. EVs make good getaway cars, you can get in them and start driving before the screens boot up. I m on year 2 of my chevy bolt and I still leave it on sometimes.

      @mexicanspec, the issue is that a tiny smart car with a 70-mile range and a massive SUV with a 300-mile range have to pay the same high registration fee. I don't put enough miles to justify the high registration cost.

    Charging to 100% does take a while but you do show how people think about EVs. Only people who really research EVs know not to fast charge it to 100% when they're on a trip. It's a whole different style of driving but worth it if you can charge at home.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cost to charge it was what it would cost to fill a kia forte for half the range and 3x the upfront cost. I want to see what it costs to charge at home....If I charge one at home where I live it costs 32 cents per KWH during the day.

    • @patricklee7888
      @patricklee7888 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@muskokamike127 oof 32 cents per kWh? I could see it not being worth it for you. Most EV drivers who charge at home have an EV plan that charges less off peak. I think it’s 23 cents per kWh for me. Still not cheap but not terrible. Plus pretty much 0 maintenance

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@patricklee7888 I did a side by side comparison when I rented a kia forte for a week. I drove like 580 kms and it only cost me $28 CDN in gas. WOW, that's great fuel economy. I think I avg 4.5 L/100 kms So I compared it to a tesla model 3 and at the time, it cost $20 to charge the Model 3. Ok, you save $8 BUT all the ppl I knew with a Model 3 only got about 300 kms out of a charge.
      "But you save on maintenance" the Kia was $32K the model 3 was $65K. I could buy a spare Kia and dump the first one at the first oil change and STILL be ahead.
      I drive very little, so the range on an EV isn't an issue but I DO need a pickup (carpenter). I said yeah, an EV truck would work for me. How much? $80,000. HOLY CRAP That's 30 yrs worth of gas for me.

  • @TheRealSimpsons1

    You're not using the regen correctly, also any ice car has additional costs, oils, brake replacement more frequently etc and more servicing costs per hour. Home charging reduces the cost per mile significantly as well and you could adapt that to include solar and its then Free.
