- PMDG 737 NGX - NDB Approach Tutorial
The dreaded NDB Approach! Despite the technology being over 70 years old, they are still being used to this day! Thankfully on a modern aircraft like a 737-800 with a full Navigational and Approach database in its FMS, you can generate the required magenta line to follow, matching the inbound course and vertical profile precisely using LNAV and VNAV.
Join me in the hold at La Palma (GCLA/SPC) as we fly the NDB Approach for RW36, an approach which is offset by 14 degrees to the right of centreline due to terrain. This Approach has very high minima so if you’re not visual by 1600ft you must fly the missed approach procedure and immediately make a turn to the right to avoid terrain.
Thankfully it’s a beautiful day so I plan to disconnect at the minima and fly the last part with the A/P and A/T disconnected and lining up manually to land on the runway.

I so hoped you wouldn't do the coded/LNAV/VNAV approach but a more manual NDB approach.
Very good, i understood everything, but i would really like to know, how to make this „extended Centerline“?
After leaving the Mil world, I cut my teeth on an early 733 with a hybrid Analogue /EFIS suite and single FMC CDU.
I found NDB approaches were far more demanding without full EFIS but an excellent platform to grasp the fundamentals of Non-Directional work.

Been inspired after successfully doing your approach into la Palma to have a go at madeira 05 RNP Z05 AR (Navigraph). Rnav flies me into the cliff just before the runway. I thought at first it was a wrong setting of QNH but setting it too high or low makes no difference with active sky set on or off. Rnav on instruments is bang on the money though so I am confused!

That Approach wasn't RNAV, just using LNAV and VNAV to fly an NDB Approach but still flown the same way!
Certain Approaches you have to disconnect and fly manually otherwise the magenta line might take you into terrain. I'm unfamiliar with Madeira and know it's challenging! I don't have the charts to hand. I should think the last part of the approach is flown visually.

thanks for reply. Yes I knew you were flying NDB app but wanted to combine a VNAV app with something notoriously difficult like Madeira and yes I flew into the ground. So why the big deal about VNAV being so accurate? The magenta line takes the curve and delivers you to the threshold on the CDU. My next try will be the NDB app. Will let you know how I got on. BTW - can I ask what yoke and rudder you use (if any) and what settings. Gonna be cross if you just use the keyboard! I've got 600 hours flying this jet and no way can I line up and land as good as you. That landing you apologised about in an earlier video would be a great landing by my standards lol
Nice video! Fyi on La palma you have to go all the way down just like you did before making a 180 and backtrack to apron. Atc were not happy with us when we turned around too early:)

Hi, first of all thanks for the video! Now I was wondering if you could maybe do a more "raw" NDB approach in the future like they have in some remote russian airfields where there are no VORs. I'm having trouble to understand how courses work with NDBs since they're not directional, but some charts have directions going off of NDBs.

Worst thing I've had to learn on the sim, ndb approaches using an adf. Horrible. Quicker they phase them out the better!

Sounds great! Looking very much forward to it :) Btw some real life ATC would be awesome. I think the VATSIM audio quality is relatively bad - IVAO should be better.
VATSIM is way more professional for that matter, and the audio is fine. IVAO audio is the same as you'd hear through a skype call, so it doesn't really mirror the real deal. IVAO is more like a multiplayer, VATSIM is better for as real as it gets simulation.
if you want really good audio quality, you can also use teamspeak

As a retired ATController in the real world, IMO, VATSIM and other ATC programs are not very realistic. While aircraft simulation has improved by leaps and bounds, ATC simulation is pretty amateurish. That will hopefully improve in the future. Suggest that folks tune into live ATC online for their favorite airport/ACC
and accustom themselves to the local procedures and phraseology. It will soon all start to make sense and you will start to issue your own vectors, headings, altitudes etc. Try it, you might like it!
I agree the ATC on Vatsim can sometimes be quite amateurish but I suppose one has to remember that just like the sim pilots most people like to think of it only as a serious hobby and are probably glad that they are not dealing with the real thing . In the real world of ATC the communication is rapid which makes it hard for people unfamiliar with the phraseology.
On VATSIM I find that some controllers try too hard to emulate the speedy interaction of the professionals, which I don't have a problem with except for one thing.........the sometimes poor quality of the talk/receive channel which unfortunately is a product of the Internet. Cheap headsets contribute to the problem & I can be frustrated having to ask a controller to repeat a clearance by text because the info was too garbled. No doubt sometime in the future this will be remedied.

Why is it that the waypoints' name on the chart don't match the names on the FMC? How would I know which is which?
Good question, some WPT's do match by name but approach charts are usually referenced by FI/CI points. You have to step through the LEGS page making sure the distance between the points matches the chart

With a flameout we would consult the engine failure and shutdown checklist. So long as we have N1 rotation and no airframe vibration from the failed engine we would attempt an in flight engine restart.
I've played around with the NGX and their engine failure option simulates severe damage (No N1 rotation). In this case we would consult the engine fire, severe damage or seperation checklist where a restart would not be attempted.
I will invest in some rudder pedals so I can do a realistic tutorial covering engine failures 👍🏼

@ flightdeck2sim; I have tried it and wasn't very impressed. I work with these things and so know how they would react. Thought I might have missed something when I tried it though which is why I asked :-) Can't believe you are not using rudder pedals and your corrections in sim are realistic too. Impressive!!
Many thanks again for the off-set approach. Is there recommended back-track speed on the runway? Your speed seemed about right at 30 knots (taxi at 20 knots apron at 10 knots). Or is just get off as fast as you can because something bigger than you is about to land on your head. I think landing at Gran Caneria can wait until I have had some more practice. Many thanks again.
(Company specific) we can taxi up to 50kts on an active runway when backtracking

Could you please tell me the difference between NDB, RNAV and VOR approaches as I see that you are using LNAV/VNAV in all of them.

Non Precicion Approaches (VOR/NDB or any approach without vertical guidance) can be flown using LNAV and VNAV so long as the Approach is correctly coded in the FMC. This ensures both the lateral and vertical profile can be flown very accurately and we can use various scales and deviation alerts provided from the FMC.
Technically speaking we don't need to tune or use the NDB/VOR if we're using LNAV/VNAV but the appropriate equipment must be tuned , identified and referenced by the crew as a back up. We cannot accept the approach if the VOR/NDB/beacon is U/S.
An RNAV approach doesn't use ground based stations so you must use LNAV and VNAV.
If the approach is not coded in the FMC we would have to fly it using HDG SEL and V/S (a tutorial I will cover in the future)
On a modern aircraft like a 737-800 with a full navigation database in it's FMS almost all NPA's including RNAV are flown using LNAV and VNAV.

Top notch as usual, can I ask, when would you ask for clearance when setting up? As I use FS2Crew and ProATC I do it directly I enter the aircraft (ProATC gives me my RWY and SID) but what do you do in real life, does it differ with different SOP's?

We would select the expected STAR/APP during pre-flight setup based on info from the flight plan. We would aim to have everything setup and briefed prior to TOD, allowing us to fully concentrate on the Descent, Approach and Landing. It can change at anytime, even last minute! We have to sometimes quickly setup and re-brief again.

The NGX is a very accurate rendition of the real aircraft and certainly something I can use to improve my knowledge. With regards to handling there are some limitations as there is no feedback from the controls (the need to trim etc) but that's the same with all aircraft on a desktop simulator. The dynamics and how it behaves with certain configurations, attitude and thrust settings are pretty close to the real thing.
There are some subtle differences between the NGX and real aircraft which I always try to bring to your attention but the flight model is pretty sound.
Attitude and thrust settings for a given gross weight are not too far off the real aircraft but it’s not so good at holding the magenta line on SIDS/STARS and maintaining holding patterns. Sometimes it can struggle to hold altitude. For what is essentially an entertainment product it’s certainly worth the investment and it’s realistic enough to accurately show you how to operate it using my companies SOP’s

One question. Why recycle the FDs? Why not keep them on for guidance? Also does recycling them change the flight dynamics of the PMDG?

Recycling the F/D’s ensures correct G/A guidance in the event of a missed approach. Also F/D guidance below the MDA isn’t 100% accurate as you get close to the ground compared to an ILS, especially if it’s offset like on this approach. You don’t want to be following F/D’s if they’re not providing the correct information!!

Weird... If you look at the chart, when it tells you the DMEs from the NDB, it has the identifier of BV? Why is that? O.o

Yes, but if you look in the chart itself, it also has a BV identifier (D19 BV, D18 BV, D16 BV etc.)

Hi FD2S, (question not relating to this) on the descent forecast page in the CDU, what 3 altitudes would you use to forecast the winds on descent? I use PFPX with Active sky, and on my flightplan I am given 5 altitudes. I enter all 3 altitudes except cruise altitudes those below 10,000 (since I am speed restricted). However on the descent I find my aircraft exceeding the calculated descent speed, of which I am forced to use speed brake. Is this just the limitation of the sim, or is this a common occurrence in the real aircraft?

We put the winds for FL300, 200 and 100.
Don't worry! It's a common occurrence in real life. Descending with VNAV PATH the aircraft will follow the descent profile only and your speed can fluctuate, you can add thrust manually with the A/T in ARM and use speedbrake or increase speed if high on profile.

Thanks. I fly the NGX using flyinside on the oculus rift. It is pretty dam amazing as you get a sense of height, scale, speed and distance etc which is simply unachievable on a monitor or home cockpit. Flying the 737 NGX I can somewhat experience in a limiting way what it must be like for you guys sitting at the front. Such as the inability to see the horizon on climbout and the height of the nose upon touchdown.

Don’t you find that PMDG float a little bit too much?
Hi Josh,
There PMDG does feel a little "floaty" but the 737 does have a natural tendency to float if you're flying just a few knots above your target speed on final when initiating the Flare.
If you start "checking" and your speed is VREF or less the real aircraft will land quite firmly. This will also be the case if you reduce thrust too early, especially landing with Flap 40 due to the significant increase in drag.
Small inputs using a computer joystick would involve a far larger input using the control column so the tendency to flare using flight sim is greater. Both in real life and in the sim if you initiate the CHECK, CLOSE, HOLD correctly and the correct height/speed it will settle quite nicely within the touchdown zone.

All though I was always fascinated with the 737 and been simming for years..I can watch these videos all day! Thankyou for doing these..always learning.Although I do fly the 737-300 IXEG in XPLANE11 I can relate with most of what your doing and showing..but if you dont mind..can it be possible to slow down just a bit..Good stuff to be learned here! I have to keep on replaying to see what your doing..and why.. and then locate my needed instruments and trying to match up with yours..!

I'm showing you how to apply real word procedures as both PF and PM and the operational impact of what I'm doing. This does requires constant instruction and narration when running in real life time, this can be difficult to understand without the required background knowledge!
I have toyed with the idea of pausing to explain points in more detail but I'd far rather let it run in real time (for realism) and allow the viewer to decide when to pause and make notes/playback anything I've said.
I have taken on similar feedback and you might notice with newer tutorials I have slowed everything down but it's difficult to find a pace to suit all!

Do all real 737 pilots use PMDG and if so, is it for leisure or would they intergrate it into the day job in some way. For example, if you're aware of a route you'll be flying in several days, is it commonplace to go home and sim it. Would that make any kind of difference to flying it for real afterwards. Thanks

I wouldn't say it's the majority but quite a few do use it to practice various scenarios. I certainly used it to practice routes when I joined and then I stopped using it for the last 6 years, just occasionally when I had my own 6 month sim check.
When I became a Type Rating Instructor last year I started to use it again which is when I thought it would be quite cool to share some of the things I've learnt and flightdeck2sim was born!
The PMDG NGX really is a fantastic training tool and very similar to the real aircraft. It's certainly realistic enough to show you how to operate using our SOP's.

Most planes don't even have ADF receivers anymore.
WackyBroProductions yeah it's only an option on the shiny new Boeings (747-8 and 787) but still standard in the -800! We don't actually use it, it's only there for a backup using LNAV and VNAV!

In the states they stopped repairing NDB stations as the break. So they sorta phase themselves out.

Yes most approaches where the FMC is used for course/lateral path tracking (VOR/RNAV/NDB/VISUAL etc..) are technically overlay approaches and we use LNAV/VNAV to fly them. We still have to tune the applicable navigation aids and monitor it throughout the approach, in this case non required for a visual!

I love these tutorials because even though I've flown the NGX many times, it seems I always learn at least one new thing from watching. As for the NDB having an incorrect identifier, you can update the FSX nav data for free using the info found at www.aero.sors.fr/navaids3.html and it's updated each cycle. Pretty simple stuff if you'd like to be up-to-date for any upcoming stuff you might do!
