Even though the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command film and series weren't as popular as the original Toy Story character, the people who made the film and the tv series all did a fantastic job and Patrick and Nicole's performances in both were just excellent!
Buzz lightyear of starcomand is One of the most criminally underrated show's ever made and with it being a show that sadly was short lived and Man it's a shame that it Left a lot of emotional Love.
This show deserves much better attention and recognition. Even if it far from what John Lasstner originally had in mind for the show, I think it fits perfectly well with the comedic nature of the first two Toy Story films. Despite fans pleading for a full release, Disney and Pixar won’t comply. In fact, John forbid anyone from using stuff from the show in future Toy Story media. They didn’t even acknowledge this show or Monsters at Work in a recent magazine about Pixar’s history.
Monsters At Work not being acknowledged makes sense since the show isn't made by Pixar itself. Star Command was recently confirmed to be canon in the Toy Story universe by Lightyear's director (who also worked on the show), which I don't think would've been said if Lasstner was still in charge.
It makes as much sense as Disney refusing to release the original versions of the original Star Wars trilogy AND just releasing the special editions on Disney+ even though Star Wars has been out of Lucas' hands for a decade now.
Not to mention, in one episode of the tv-series, of Nova 'addition' to energy consumption, when she realize that in doing so, she become more powerful...a clearly reference to drug addition and the danger that it can represent for yourself and the other around you
I would argue that Buzz is handled very well. To us, the audience, in Toy Story Buzz is a parody of those famous space captains, but in his own mind that is just who he is and is being completely straight. (Hence his mental breakdown and existential crisis when he learns that isn't who he truly is). Since in this Universe, Buzz isn't a parody of anything either, or even a toy, it makes sense that his character is played completely straight. Especially since narratively, his role is straight man to his wacky sidekicks.
I scrolled down to check whether somebody else had already made this comment before I said the exact same thing. This show/movie wasn't made to be a parody or a subversion or anything ironic, it was made for kids who legitimately, wholeheartedly love space heroes going on spaceship laser adventures, as anybody in their right mind logically should. It's a completely unironic celebration of the aesthetic and the spirit and the cheese, and a chance to see Buzz Lightyear be who he always knew he was. From what I've seen from the advertisements, this actually seems like one of the aspects that the new film fails at: they made him, and the world around him, altogether too gritty and too serious and too self-aware. Shame.

Animation wise it's certainly impressive. But does anyone over 6 actually like the Lightyear movie? Any with taste I'd say it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
I honestly really loved this movie, I thought it was charming, and had surprising depth. Warp's "Sacrifice/death" was seriously impactful on Buzz, giving him trauma and survivors guilt. Him working alone was played for laughs, but it was also blatantly stated to be because he was TERRIFIED of any future partners potentially ending up like Warp. And again, while the twist about Warp was honestly really obvious, it still heavily impacted Buzz. He refused to believe his supposed friend could possibly betray him, suggested a plethora of excuses, He himself died and was imagining, clones, android replicas, mind control, he was just desprate to believe Warp wouldn't backstab him. And the three Sidekicks, Mira, XR, and Booster, were genuinely fun and memorable characters. I love this movie. I wish it'd be allowed to have the spotlight again.
While I wouldn't say I enjoyed the movie now as much as when I saw it as a kid, I still think it's a passible flick and solid pilot for the series. One of my favorite moments after rewatching the movie has to be when Buzz discovered his old partner/friend was working for Zurg, since he tried to understand the situation through the typical tropes of a hero becoming evil (i.e. amnesia, evil clone, brainwashing). It's just one of those things that helps make this movie fun, along with the characters and action scenes. I really ought to rewatch the show, too.
I'm quite surprised you rated the characters quite low as I felt the chemistry of Buzz' eventual team was great - Mira was memorable for being a princess who wanted to do "dirty work", Booster who doesn't have the body that makes him look like a ranger but shows he can be a hero, XR who has his pros even when glitched, and Zurg who is so funny to me.

Yeah, well, I don't care what you think. I still LOVE this movie, AND the series it inspired! MUCH better than "Lightyear"! At least THIS show didn't make Zurg into Buzz from the future!
Zurg being his own man and a mystery works better. Star Command never revealed Zurg or his origins, he's like the Joker from BTAS. Having Zurg being "a future self" is just lame. It's kind of a slap in the face to the "Sci-fi Captain" Buzz is. That is why Warp Darkmatter's betrayal and death hits far harder than "Lightyear". To push on my sci-fi point. We could probably still get woody round up series one day, especially since pixar are starting to get into the realm of tv series with stuff like dug days, cars on the road, and win or lose.
Fun Fact: Angus Maclane who directed Lightyear (2022) also did the CGI animation for the CGI part of the Adventure Begins and The Star Command tv series
So I guess Angus MacLane has some personal attachment to the original Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins unlike John Lasseter and the Pixar veterans.
I wonder if it’s “Eight Crazy Nights”. With him saying it’s one of the nastiest animated movies (with deer eating feces and other gross humor), he seems to be implying that his next Classic Reviews is going to be “Eight Crazy Nights”.
Team Lightyear and Zurg after watching the review they are pretty still for a while. X-R: Well... So much for the much needed rocognition that we definitely deserve... Zurg: Ha!! *I knew it!!* I warned you all that this review is _not_ gonna end well!! Buzz: Oh come on, Zurg! According to your descriptions our movie would get only 10 points _at the most._ Luckilly we've got 14 points instead... So... Better than nothing I guess... Zurg: What's the point, Lightyear?! The Boss Baby 2 got a higher ranking than our movie! *The freaking Boss Baby 2!!!* At that moment Booster starts sobbing and Mira tries to console him: Oh come on, Booster. Chill out! One bad review of our movie doesn't hurt us in the slightest... People are still loving both our product and us as characters. And you know what? That Hollywood cash cow "Lightyear" has, for the time at least, an abysmall score on IMDB. And most of the reviews say that they didn't feel satisfied with the new version of Buzz Lightyear and that some people do prefer our movie over "Lightyear." Booster whimbering: I know! But let's be real! The _only_ reason why he didn't give our movie the "Animat's Seal of Garbage" was because he didn't want to loose any subscribers. When he will eventually review "Lightyear" he will definitely give it the "Animat's Seal of Approval." And in the end he will say that our movie is a complete garbage compared to this!! He then starts crying again, even louder than before. Buzz: Hey! Hold a second! Where is Warp? They see him passed out on the floor and they sit him down on a chair. Warp barely waking up: Is... Is the nightmare over? Zurg: Nightmare? Darkmatter, I'm very dissapointed at you. I thought that you were generally a lot of bravier than this! Buzz cunningly: Hey, hold on a second... Warp... My old friend... Did you faint on this part? :) He puts again the review on the 12:32 to 12:38 part and he gives more sound to the volume when Animat screams *Darkmatter!!!* Upon hearing this poor Warp collapses again on the floor. Zurg: *Lightyear!!! Leave him alone at once!!!* Buzz rubbing his hands with happiness: Sorry, Zurg... But you know... Revenge is such a sweet thing...
I was expecting Lightyear to completely retcon the show but other than it being Buzz's origin story, 1 revelation and the new characters, the show could be considered a sequel many years later. I don't expect it to happen any time soon but its fun to wonder.
I watched the VHS all the time as a kid. I didn't have cable for most of my childhood, so I didn't get to watch much of the actual show, except for a few episodes that my grandmother recorded for me. Years later I watched the entire series on the internet. It's still really enjoyable.
This film was great! I didn't have high expectations for this but I really enjoyed it. It was fun and did a good job of introducing everyone to the universe.
Not worth the hype??!!! Excuse you sir!!!!!! THIS MOVIE IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE HYPE. There is absolutely character development for everyone Buzz is more of a team player, Mira realizes she doesn't know everything, XR is more human by the end and Booster finally breaks out of his shell peoving himself to be a capable Ranger. All the toy story have simple and predictable beats what makes it work is the dynamics. This has it in spades
Agree! I watched this movie endlessly when I was a kid. Decided to re-watch it today. I'm 20 minutes in and now I see character development that I could never realize as a kid. Buzz Lightyear is a brave and badass. But the best thing about him is that he is supportive towards Booster. He's a gigachad.
@@RailroadEngineer123 As do I, as I saw the film and found it to be not as good as Pixar's classic hits (as well as newer ones like Luca and Turning Red).
At the very least release the show at the same time as the Lightyear film drops on Disney+, and maybe a proper DVD set as well (if The Proud Family can get a complete series set, and Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers can get a Blu-ray set before the new film was released, then Buzz should get his own DVD box set)
I remember having a cassete tape with this movie my dad at a 90's tv in our old house which had a cassete inserter (this was back in the late 2000's no im not that old) i would mindlessly watch that a ton of times and it was fun.

DUDE this movie was epic! The music, the writting, the feeling of actual dread when we see Zurg actually succeed with his plan before Buzz "sacrifices" himself to save the whole universe, it was all so epic! And don't even get me started with that scene where Zurg and his robot army completely devastates the little green mens planet
I have never seen the tv show as a kid, but I remember vividly about the movie. Man those were fun times. And I find it funny that Patrick Warburtin, the man with the deepest voice I have heard voiced the LGM
This would also end up as a 3-Part episode of the TV Show and had Patrick Warburton dub Tim Allen's original recordings from the film. Just felt like pointing that out incase anyone never knew that until now.
Actually, Patrick Warburton's recordings as Buzz were the original ones when they did these as TV episodes, but Disney brought in Tim Allen to replace the dialogue that Warburton already recorded for the VHS release. Allen had to match the tone and the cadence of the way Warburton voiced Buzz, and that's why he doesn't sound as good like he did in the Toy Story movies.
I love everything Buzz Lightyear (even the dumb side plot in Toy Story 4). I'm excited to see Lightyear. I saw Lightyear. I thought it was decent, but I was also very disappointed.
Might as well say this, to get it out of the way. I forgot how awesome Mira Nova’s character can be (mostly for…obvious reasons, one of which being Shego’s voice).
As a fan of both characters, I never put the voices together. Kudos to the voice actress for giving distinct personality despite the voices not being that different after you pointed it out.
@@crazyconan28 Nicole’s voice legit works for both personalities, more I think about it. Even when she plays Franny (Meet the Robinsons), she has the same voice, though it fits with her personality. Could also be because that’s her natural voice.

We could probably still get woody round up series one day, especially since pixar are starting to get into the realm of tv series with stuff like dug days, cars on the road, and win or lose.
Maybe Woody will get a spin-off movie.
I would've loved watching it. I mean who wouldn't like it.
It would've been cool, but chances are it will happen in this day and age.
@@Falxifer95 I think it's a possibly still. A 50/50 chance in my opinion.
Fun Fact: Angus Maclane who directed Lightyear (2022) also did the CGI animation for the CGI part of the Adventure Begins and The Star Command tv series
So I guess Angus MacLane has some personal attachment to the original Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins unlike John Lasseter and the Pixar veterans.
or he thought that a Buzz Lightyear movie idea is worth a revisit, maybe not with the tv series in mind, but still
Fun fact: the people behind this show will go to Create Kim Possible
Kid: Mom, can we have Lightyear?
Mom: We have Lightyear at home
Lightyear at home:
Ngl this plus the show itself I’d say it’s better and more worthwhile than the movie (which is just a discount interstellar)
@@thecollector4332 Hi do you know what he’s reviewing next all I know is that it’s nasty and that he has to censor it
I’m so glad that people are remembering this show
This movie and the tv show has always been a major part of my childhood! To Infinity and Beyond!😁🚀
8/10
As a 22 years old man with Autism who watched every single Pilot animations... This one for me is 10 out of 10!
This show's plot and storytelling was much better than most of today's shows
You guys have no idea how many years I've been waiting for this review, I grew up with the show and as a little kid it was my favorite show
coool
20:35 I like how Animat's misery on the next classic review, is recorded so Zurg can enjoy it.
I wonder if it’s “Eight Crazy Nights”. With him saying it’s one of the nastiest animated movies (with deer eating feces and other gross humor), he seems to be implying that his next Classic Reviews is going to be “Eight Crazy Nights”.
@@brittanydavisghiblieaglesfan He said the problem wasn't that it was a "bad" movie, so it couldn't be Eight Crazy Nights.
*The freaking Boss Baby 2!!!*
At that moment Booster starts sobbing and Mira tries to console him: Oh come on, Booster. Chill out! One bad review of our movie doesn't hurt us in the slightest... People are still loving both our product and us as characters. And you know what? That Hollywood cash cow "Lightyear" has, for the time at least, an abysmall score on IMDB. And most of the reviews say that they didn't feel satisfied with the new version of Buzz Lightyear and that some people do prefer our movie over "Lightyear."
Booster whimbering: I know!
He puts again the review on the 12:32 to 12:38 part and he gives more sound to the volume when Animat screams *Darkmatter!!!* Upon hearing this poor Warp collapses again on the floor.
Zurg: *Lightyear!!! Leave him alone at once!!!*
Buzz rubbing his hands with happiness: Sorry, Zurg... But you know... Revenge is such a sweet thing...
I was expecting Lightyear to completely retcon the show but other than it being Buzz's origin story, 1 revelation and the new characters, the show could be considered a sequel many years later. I don't expect it to happen any time soon but its fun to wonder.
The Cheaper Lightyear, but it's also the good one.
I watched the VHS all the time as a kid. I didn't have cable for most of my childhood, so I didn't get to watch much of the actual show, except for a few episodes that my grandmother recorded for me. Years later I watched the entire series on the internet. It's still really enjoyable.
I had the vhs tape too, but in Spanish
Stay tuned for next week where AniMat will review another animated movie involving everyone’s favorite Space Ranger
Do you think he will give that movie a 10/10 like the Toy Story movies?
This movie was my childhood.
I remember watching this when I had this movie on VHS,
Ah good times.
This film was great! I didn't have high expectations for this but I really enjoyed it. It was fun and did a good job of introducing everyone to the universe.
That’s the same reception I have for turning red I didn’t have high expectations of the film but I had a blast with it!
Are we talking about Lightyear?
The film is shite, it has good VFX but zero soul and incredibly weak story
Honestly, having watched Lightyear yesterday and Star Command right after it, I prefer this movie waaaaay more than the new one.
Same! I don't even consider the new film canon!
@@RailroadEngineer123 As do I, as I saw the film and found it to be not as good as Pixar's classic hits (as well as newer ones like Luca and Turning Red).
This movie was the biggest part of my childhood and I adored every single part of it
Actually mat. Patrick Warburton did record all of Buzz’s lines but his lines were dubbed over by Tim Allen
Mom, can we go see Lightyear?
There’s no need, we have Lightyear at home
Lightyear at home = this movie🤣🤣
I had no idea that Patrick Warburton did the Little Green Men in this movie nor did I realize it was Al's voice actor Wayne Knight as Emperor Zurg.
Cheaper and *superior* Buzz Lightyear spin-off.
Cheaper but Better
They better release the adventure begins and the show on disney plus if they don’t I’ll die
@@erichfiedler1481 i agree
BLOSC should get a complete box set
I remember having a cassete tape with this movie my dad at a 90's tv in our old house which had a cassete inserter (this was back in the late 2000's no im not that old) i would mindlessly watch that a ton of times and it was fun.
"Mom, can we see Lightyear?"
"We have Lightyear at home."
Lightyear at home:
"HOLY SHIT, THIS IS WAY BETTER!!"
"Watch your language, sweetie."
Also, Everett Peck, the creator of Duckman and Squirrel Boy, passed away this week.
What?
@@estefaniaberrini9159 Yes, i am not making this up.
😢😢😢
Yeah I heard. That's too bad... I never saw any of them though.
I'm gonna take a wild guess and say the next review is Felidae
Yeah, it MIGHT BE!!!😟
Or a Ralph Bakshi movie
Growing up on Toy story and then watching this movie and a bit of the show as a kid. It was fun and entertaining then still have some fondness for the spinoff series as this pilot did it's job and introduced us to a fun little series. Great that Mat help make people aware this show happened and can't wait to see his review of Lightyear. To infinity and beyond! 🌟 🎨 📺 🎥 👍
I remember watching this in third grade as sort of a culmination of our space science unit
This show is so much better than the movie. Pretty funny and surprisingly adult jokes at times.
Animat's Reviews never gets old.
According to Twitter, there's still a connection between Lightyear as in is still canon/ not so retcon
The people who made this and Kim Possible should do an Incredibles series.
That won't be necessary
Funny you mentioned Kim Possible, because the actress who played as Mira in Star Command, also played as Shego
Any idea on what the next review could be? I'm sensing a Ralph Bakshi feature (like Fritz the Cat or Coonskin).
whatever it is..., poor Mat sure does look worried.
Felidae
DUDE this movie was epic! The music, the writting, the feeling of actual dread when we see Zurg actually succeed with his plan before Buzz "sacrifices" himself to save the whole universe, it was all so epic!
And don't even get me started with that scene where Zurg and his robot army completely devastates the little green mens planet
I wish someday that Animat would do a animation lookback of Toei animation
How come Woody doesn't get his own animated tv show? :(
Make it a Disney plus show and people will watch it for sure.
This show is a classic and I really love seeing it again, also hope y'all have a great day.
My brother and I loved watching this as kids!
Felidae is the next classic review
It could also be a Ralph Bakshi movie...you never know.
I think this is the movie Andy saw in theaters.
The show even has a vampire named Nos-4-A2 voiced by Nigel from the Drew Carey show
Buzz Lightyear of Star Command>Lightyear
I grew up with this show but I understand your points and I'm glad you didn't hate it.
I have never seen the tv show as a kid, but I remember vividly about the movie. Man those were fun times. And I find it funny that Patrick Warburtin, the man with the deepest voice I have heard voiced the LGM
Comparing this to Lightyear,Buzz of Star Command feels much more like what Andy would've seen that made him interested in Buzz over Lightyear
@@jerelminter I thought it was the other way around
@@FistfulOfCourage Not to mention, she was also Supergirl in the 2019 version of DC Super Hero Girls, and Marlene the Otter from The Penguins of Madagascar tv series
Thanks for the trip on the way back machine with this review.
I still love this movie, I dont feel the same in anyway. This is way better than lightyear was.
"Cheaper" but better, a lot a lot better. That's the REAL Buzz Lightyear.
Thanks for doing this. I showed someone the Lightyear trailer and they said they couldn't imagine him as more than a toy. I was like uhh... Hello? THE SHOW 😂
Kinda funny that you are reviewing this on the day of the release of Lightyear.
I bet the next review is one of the earliest films by Ralph Bakshi.
Yeah I'm thinking it might be Fritz the cat.
I still own a copy of this on VHS right now
First
to be faster than Lightyear and the speed of light combined ;)
you're timing is impecable
So many people should watch this instead. This movie and cartoon was my childhood, and it sucks there’s only a few of us who remember it.
One thing to take away from this pilot movie is that it begins with the Toy Story characters watching it on the television indicating that this is meant to be like a Saturday Morning Cartoon (and we all what there like right).
I don't know what's the next movie Animat is reviewing next time!
I’m gonna guess probably Fritz the Cat or some other X-rated animated movie, or Ralph Bakshi or something
I do have fond memories on Buzz Lightyear of Star Command when it aired from time to time on toon Disney (Disney xd). Yet the only thing I remember are the characters and art design of the show. Speaking of creators, the guys behind this and Kim possible, would later be the show runners on the penguins of Madagascar for nick which I adore so much to this day!!! Who knew that bob schooley and mark mccorkle had a specialty in adapting Pixar/dream works movies into spin off shows.
My prediction for AniMat's ratings for Lightyear
It could go 2 ways
If it gets the seal of approval
Story: 8/10
Animation: 10/10
Characters: 9/10
Overall: 9/10
If it doesn't get the seal of approval
Story: 7/10
Animation: 10/10
Characters: 8/10
Overall: 8/10
Not a 10/10 for Lightyear?
@@friepaign3828 I gave it a 10/10 it's my favorite Pixar movie, but Animat is a professional critic so I predict his rating based on how he is as a critic.
@@frozenwishstudios I heard most of the criticisms besides the villain are invalid because the criticisms I hear of it is because it’s not Toy Story. And it’s my 3 favorite movie btw since Soul and Coco
I think turning red would be the best animated movie for 2022 according to animat
@@sebastianroberts3779 Well that's so far. But I got a feeling Strange World has potential to be AniMat's favorite animated film of 2022.
Now this is the real buzz lighter movie
Let me just say right now that I like both Lightyear, and The Adventure Begins equally. Yeah, I said it.
Hot take
Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command > Lightyear
I'll take Buzz Lightyear of Star Command over Pixar's Lightyear ANYDAY!
2:42 fun fact: that's not Tom Hanks as Woody, it's his brother Jim Hanks who funnily enough records dialogue for the actual Sheriff Woody Dolls in real life.
He’s also Woody in Kingdom Hearts III
I honestly would have judge the movie as both a Pilot and movie combined. Plus it did kind of expand the buzz lightyear universe from the Toy Story world of where the character originated from since we got a taste where Woody's came from.
I usually prefer watching these pilot films like this or Stitch! The Movie for what they are, as pilots, not actually movies.
I never cared about how this or the show compared to the Toy Story films, I just wanted something fun and that's what I got out of it as a kid. That's why it's best to separate it from a movie franchise with such high standards.
And that thumbnail of Buzz tho. 😂
