This was fun but I'd love to see you read new releases that YOU think should be in this category throughout 2024 and do your own award... Pick the top 20 first week of December and set up polls for people to vote in your mystery thriller award! I'd trust that so much more!!
The Last Devil to Die had me sobbing driving down the freeway. Such a beautiful exploration of aging, grief, friendship, etc. Glad this reading experience went better than last year's!
Now I have to read The Last Devil to die...among others. I love the concept of your blog! I am 73 amd trying desperately to read as many " mystery" type novels as possible...I always knew when I retired..I would READ amd read and read🌝
Holy Moly Mara!!! I saw this pop up and have waited all day to watch it! Knowing this video is waiting for me is an early Christmas gift. I am so thankful for you and the time and effort you put into making videos like these. Just so thankful. This is COZY for me!
Yep. I read The Last Devil to Die on release and I teared up while you were talking about it. 😢 I’m still not okay. It was incredibly powerful for any book let alone a traditional mystery. And SA Cosby really never fools around, does he? He goes hard every time. Do something good for yourself. These are books that require recovery self-care. (Or bunnies.) I’m sending a digital hug.
I would never read any of these books (I like cosy best) but I love these Goodreads videos so much!! Can’t believe how much you go through every time, I hope you get to reread favourite books you love after this! ❤❤
Trivia that no one needs to know about but I felt the need to write down: 1. I am old. 2. I am a teacher. 3. When I started teaching my mentor teacher told me that she had lived in the Ted Bundy Sorority 3years after Ted Bundy...Another: 1. My youngest daughter is a victim of the one-child policy, my family traveled to China to bring her home when she was 3 years old. She had huge mental and physical problems. She is 20 years old now, graduated from high school, and is enrolled in the local community college where she takes classes from home. I have not read The Leftover Woman yet, but it is on my list. My daughter is from Hubei (which is where some people think that Covid started). Okay, that is all, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Thank you for making this and adding only a few to my tbr. You took one for the team on this reading project and we, your audience, the aforementioned team, wholeheartedly thank you 🙏🏼 ❤
So glad you found this side of it more enjoyable than the project of reading the winners. Definitely interested in checking out your faves when I feel like a mystery/thriller that isn’t cozy (that’s where I tend to live in the genre when I visit).
Thank you for taking on this incredible challenge - Kudos to you - You must be so drained - Please do something nice for yourself, you deserve it! Happy Holiday Season!
If you somehow haven't been inundated with this, Richard Osman was also a tv writer, as well is show runner and host of a Brit style quiz show called House of games that's available to watch a lot of legitimately on youtube. Just wonderfully smart and charming I'd say.
I really enjoyed my time watching the video for the second time and I really appreciate you and the amazing efforts and time cuz I know that was a massive undertaking for you and I can't imagine myself doing it without being in long Ass slump 😊❤❤ and happy holidays 🎄🎄
This is positively amazing and your sacrifice is so appreciated. I trust your reviews implicitly. Now I may go forward with a refreshed TBR. 🥰 16:41 😂😂😂
You are such a queen for doing this!! Makes me so glad I've been slowly collecting the Richard Osman books, and more excited to pick them up!! And JEEZ the power of Kindle Unlimited is really showing this year...
Love this video, I was curious about the Thursday Murder Club before but now I'm so intrigued (and preparing to have my heart destroyed in a great way apparently 😆😭)
Fantastic video! Totally off topic: I have Lucy Worsley's "Agatha Christie: An Elusive Woman" in my TBR. Are you familiar with it? Anyhow, Worsley has done a 3-episode documentary on Dame Agatha. The first one aired on PBS on Dec 3; the next two are scheduled for the next two Sundays. I thought that you might be interested. Kay
your whole discussion about alice feeney and the subgenre is soo true! i was wondering why i can't get into the popular thriller books lately and it's because the authors are only trying to "fool" me and the book ends up having the most unrealistic and funny twists of all time
I agree about the Last Devil to Die. I took so many notes/excerpts from this little book and thought it was stronger than the 3rd one. I really like this series.
It's a mystery as to why there are so few mysteries in the Mystery Thriller category. The only book I read in this selection was the Coworker, which as you comment is incredibly bingeable, more thriller than mystery.
I wish they’d have mystery and thriller as two separate categories as they are such different genres to me. I LOVE mystery’s/detective novels but am not overly in to Thrillers, which imo are closer to horror than mystery. As they have mystery/thriller combined though, I agree they totally should’ve had more mysteries on the list.
I listened to Thursday Murder Club and gave it a meh 3 stars. Now that you’ve acknowledged it’s the weakest one and the subsequent books are great I might give them a try after all!
Love Karin Slaughter's writing! I really enjoy her Grant County series the most - start with Blindsighted. All of her books do have violence though. I skim over the more descriptive parts 🙂. Thank you for all of the reviews!! They help me recognize that popular books are not necessarily my cup of tea.
Loved Bright Young Women so much, def my favourite of the list. I also loved the Rebecca M book, and think the projects of those novels were quite different. (I don’t think Questions was actually about true crime, more about generation divide, but that’s obvi just a take!) Great video as always. I enjoy this time of year and all of your extra content. Happy holidays and all the best!
I have tried hard to convince others who only read the first Osman to keep going as they get better and better, and the investment in the characters just grows with each book.
Thank you for service 😂 I love your tree! I really hated the Thursday murder club because of the translation, but because of your enthusiasm I definitely want to try the audiobook.
Loved this! So much reading on your part, I do really value your reviews! The Last Devil to Die is on hold for me at the library. I'm on the hold list on Bright Young Minds and I'm going to give All the Sinners Bleed another try, I was not in the right head space for that one earlier.
I feel like with your enjoyment of Bright Young Women you might enjoy The Five by Hallie Rubenhold. It's non-fiction but it delves in depth in the lives of the five women murdered by Jack the Ripper. I also listened to it on audiobook and really enjoyed it!
Sometimes I Lie is my favorite Alice Feeney. I haven’t loved her other books. My favorite Karin Slaughter is The Good Daughter. Have you read that book? It isn’t part of her Will Trent series, but the character development is really well done.
I have been waiting for you and Meg to read None of this is True. When you said 2 stars, I raised my fists in triumph! I hated it for the reasons you mentioned.
I haven’t read the Thursday Murder Club yet, BUT my favourite of the bunch that I’ve read (by far) is All the Sinners Bleed, followed by The Only One Left ❤ so now I can’t wait to pick up Bright Young Women 😁😄
I can't tell you how relieved I am that you loved the last Richard Osman so much because I'm two books in and loving the series, and I would've a) been discouraged to continue or b) felt like I lost a book buddy on the way had you not enjoyed the rest of the series 😅
Ok so I ALSO confused Kate Morton and Atkinson with that book! But KA released a book last year that had a really similar cover so I was double confused!
Thank you for all your blood, sweat, and tears! But yes please take care of yourself/don’t torture yourself again 😅. I love hearing you talk about books, so I’m never going to complain about a long video. 👍🏼 Thank you for sharing your /journey/
I love the Will Trent series because of the characters, and yeah, After that Night was difficult to get through-it got more intense after page 64-the focus is on a rape club (all the rapes, even Sarah’s, are connected). Honestly, I’m not sure how I managed to finish it. I’d recommend The Last Widow. A number of the other books deal with sexual assault and domestic violence in intense ways so avoid: The Silent Wife and The Kept Woman. Some of the earlier books in the series have good mysteries and don’t deal with such difficult topics, but the characterization of the key characters isn’t t as strong as the later books.
Bright Young Women sounds interesting, but I'm definitely going to have to borrow it in physical form. Months long wait from Libby vs the local copy is currently in. And I'm also on hold for The Thursday Murder Club audiobook. This video has not been good for my tbr.
GoodReads Good Choice Awards aka Tik Tok darlings or the "It Girl " of the moment. 🤨 Richard Osman was robbed. Frida's book won because it was available on KU for a Long Time. 😂 Almost a ringing endorsement for a Feeney. Still not even a little tempted, but glad you were able to get through that one. She's too M.Night Shyamalan for me. Slaughter is a good writer, but she Really goes into things. She's like a mystery/thriller writer version of Pam Godwin. (Although Pam is the better writer) Loved the project of this video. 😏 Did I mention Richard Osman was robbed? I think I might have, but just in case I didn't. 😉
I had such mixed feelings about Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers. I enjoyed the story, even though it felt a little convoluted just for the purpose of stretching it all out. But I didn't like Vera, at all. And I felt like I was supposed to, like she was supposed to be this endearing old lady who is a bit delusional, yes, but we can all laugh it off and we love her for it. But I didn't love her for it 😅 I did rate it 3.75⭐ (I use Storygraph, and don't ask me why I'm out here watching Goodreads content if I don't even use it 😂), so I'm not a hater or anything. Just... Mixed feelings!
I rarely like domestic thrillers because if the ultimate risk is a breakup... who cares? Like, people are dying out here, Becky, just get the divorce and move on.
Check out all the videos from my amazing collaborators! - th-cam.com/play/PLp_jeZ_Fe1syWFPwXC_bCyr8kzbGImsne.html
While the Goodreads choice awards are a joke, these are some of my favorite videos of the year!
Same! I look forward to these challenges every year. They're so entertaining 😂
I agree about Goodreads.
"I act like I didn't sign up to do this" is such a mood for this entire project I feel like 😅
Truly 😭

So happy you loved the Osman books. Last Devil to Die is easily one of the best mysteries I've read. Easy vote and should have won.
ALSO "book drunk" is such a good description; I had to tear through 5 or 6 books in 2 days and it was A Time 😅
Truly it just becomes a jumble of pages and words at some point :D
Holy Moly Mara!!! I saw this pop up and have waited all day to watch it! Knowing this video is waiting for me is an early Christmas gift. I am so thankful for you and the time and effort you put into making videos like these. Just so thankful. This is COZY for me!
My university is KU and everytime I hear it, I am confused for a second before I realize we're talking about Kindle unlimited instead.
Yep. I read The Last Devil to Die on release and I teared up while you were talking about it. 😢 I’m still not okay. It was incredibly powerful for any book let alone a traditional mystery. I'm so glad!
Yes! I ❤ the Richard Osmond's series. I cried as well. Agreed, audio for those books is great.

This was a super fun video. Thank you for reading all of these so we don't have to lol. But seriously, I appreciate your take on them. 😊

I love that your video about mystery/thrillers has an actual plot twist.
I have layers!
I loved this so much! I could watch this all day long. Thanks for doing this project!
I really enjoyed my time watching the video for the second time and I really appreciate you and the amazing efforts and time cuz I know that was a massive undertaking for you and I can't imagine myself doing it without being in long Ass slump 😊❤❤ and happy holidays 🎄🎄
your style of reviewing is really insightful and helpful. Thanks for covering all of these for us
I’m so glad to hear that!
Hi Mara, I really enjoyed this video. I love the way you present books. Aloha.
What a great video!! I’m reading Vera Wong right now
This is positively amazing and your sacrifice is so appreciated. I trust your reviews implicitly. Now I may go forward with a refreshed TBR. 🥰 16:41 😂😂😂
Sad.
that was 100% not an editing mistake... not at all... :D
You are such a queen for doing this!! Makes me so glad I've been slowly collecting the Richard Osman books, and more excited to pick them up!! And JEEZ the power of Kindle Unlimited is really showing this year...
Truly KU was the real winner here
Looking forward to seeing some of these books in your next unhaul video!
Your eyeshadow is always 🔥. Love that glitter look!
Love this video, I was curious about the Thursday Murder Club before but now I'm so intrigued (and preparing to have my heart destroyed in a great way apparently 😆😭)
I'm so impressed that you managed to get through all of these! I haven't read many mysteries or thrillers lately but I will always pick up S.A. Cosby!
Fantastic video!
Totally off topic: I have Lucy Worsley's "Agatha Christie: An Elusive Woman" in my TBR. Are you familiar with it? Anyhow, Worsley has done a 3-episode documentary on Dame Agatha. The intro was fantastic! 🎉
Ahhhh what a welcome sight to mine eyes was the video alert!
So glad that you found at least a few worthy books. 😊
I agree about the Last Devil to Die. I took so many notes/excerpts from this little book and thought it was stronger than the 3rd one. I really like this series.
This was such a good video from the entertainment factor to the structure of it! Thank you for suffering for us!
It's a mystery as to why there are so few mysteries in the Mystery Thriller category. The only book I read in this selection was the Coworker, which as you comment is incredibly bingeable, more thriller than mystery.

The audio of Bright Young Women is great!
If it helps I voted for the last devil to die cause it was my friend’s fave!
Thank you for your service!
Excellent video Mara! We need more REAL mysteries. Love your pod with Jess.
I listened to Thursday Murder Club and gave it a meh 3 stars. Now that you’ve acknowledged it’s the weakest one and the subsequent books are great I might give them a try after all!
I love Computer Bob so much 😭😭 Richard Osman is so superior!
Thanks for your video.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Your hair looks so pretty fixed up like that!!! I'm new to your channel. I subscribed and I can't wait to watch more if your book content ❤
I admire you to no end for this mara
Oh my god that first clip 🤣🤣🤣 what a fucking mood. Lol. I kept having to remind myself that i had, indeed, done this to myself.
These really are such intensive videos 😭😭😭 I only tried to read the top ten and still didn't quite make it...
One thing I noticed when ranking the books, I ranked them by added to shelves instead of number of ratings, and I predicted 18 of the 20.
Loved Bright Young Women so much, def my favourite of the list.
I also loved the Rebecca M book, and think the projects of those novels were quite different. (I don’t think Questions was actually about true crime, more about generation divide, but that’s obvi just a take!)
Great video as always. I enjoy this time of year and all of your extra content.
Happy holidays and all the best!
Haha the highlights are awesome! We want more of them!
All the sinners bleed was my good reads vote. I am hoping that it ends up being a series.
I've always loved this concept so much. I read all 20 of the Fantasy nominations (although the new Romantacy category messed up my initial plans)
I have tried hard to convince others who only read the first Osman to keep going as they get better and better, and the investment in the characters just grows with each book.
I liked Kate Morton’s The Secret Keeper. I’ll have to check this one out.
I'm here for the book talk but love your top you wear in the intro. What does it say?
Thank you for service 😂 I love your tree!
I really hated the Thursday murder club because of the translation, but because of your enthusiasm I definitely want to try the audiobook.
What are some crime thrillers/police procedurals you’d recommend? I don’t see a lot of booktubers getting into those.
My favorite series that is a police procedural is JD Robb's In Death series :)
i’ve been waiting for this video, and i’m so excited!!
I love these videos but also totally understand if you never want to do it again. 😂
Loved this! So much reading on your part, I do really value your reviews! The Last Devil to Die is on hold for me at the library. I'm on the hold list on Bright Young Minds and I'm going to give All the Sinners Bleed another try, I was not in the right head space for that one earlier.
Yay I hope you find something you love!
The Housemaid is Watching will be released in June. (Freida McFadden)
I feel like with your enjoyment of Bright Young Women you might enjoy The Five by Hallie Rubenhold. It's non-fiction but it delves in depth in the lives of the five women murdered by Jack the Ripper. I also listened to it on audiobook and really enjoyed it!
Yesss that one has been on my TBR for a long time! I need to get to it
I love how Alice Feeney is basically your literary nemesis, like yall got massive beef, which is exactly why I'm a subscriber of your channel 🤣
I'm sure she's lovely her books are just not for me :D
I know you didn't like The Villa, so what is your favorite from Rachel Hawkins? Looking for a recommendation because I've never read their books!
thank you for your sacrifice 🙏
My pleasure
So glad we finally got to see you read The Last Devil to Die 😅
Sometimes I Lie is my favorite Alice Feeney. I haven’t loved her other books. My favorite Karin Slaughter is The Good Daughter. Have you read that book? It isn’t part of her Will Trent series, but the character development is really well done.
Karin Slaughter is one of my favorites…but nearly all contain sexual assault and/or major violence….i almost put her under horror/thriller lol
I have been waiting for you and Meg to read None of this is True. When you said 2 stars, I raised my fists in triumph! I hated it for the reasons you mentioned.
Sweet vindication!!
Lynne speaking here great haul I have some of them on hold at the library. Where did you get your boo top?
It was a gift but I think it was from Walmart
I haven’t read the Thursday Murder Club yet, BUT my favourite of the bunch that I’ve read (by far) is All the Sinners Bleed, followed by The Only One Left ❤ so now I can’t wait to pick up Bright Young Women 😁😄
I can't tell you how relieved I am that you loved the last Richard Osman so much because I'm two books in and loving the series, and I would've a) been discouraged to continue or b) felt like I lost a book buddy on the way had you not enjoyed the rest of the series 😅
Ugh it's so good you have some great books ahead!
So excited!!
We better get a good weepy cry shot when you get to Jade Legacy!
the quotes in this video title are doing some work and I love it
I'll give Thursday Murder Club another try, I started the first one but never really got into it
How quickly I clicked off The Wicked King audiobook to watch this vid! The anticipation has been REAL! 📚🤗
get your popcorn ready! 🍿
Ok so I ALSO confused Kate Morton and Atkinson with that book! But KA released a book last year that had a really similar cover so I was double confused!

Love your videos thanks for doing this so we don't have to .
Adding a lot of them to my tbr.

Woof, yeah, sounds like it's good I bailed because that's a lot!
I love SA Cosby, need to pick up his new one, glad to see you liked it!
What Lies in the Woods bothered me because it's monetizing on a true event from a few years ago and that feels gross.
"Serial Killer Thriller" is quite the tongue twister. :)
Bright Young Women sounds interesting, but I'm definitely going to have to borrow it in physical form.
Months long wait from Libby vs the local copy is currently in.
And I'm also on hold for The Thursday Murder Club audiobook. This video has not been good for my tbr.
I love when you roast the literary girlies (as a literary girly) 😂
As a former literary girlie, it is done with a large amount of affection & empathy 😹
After reading, Lisa, Jewels book, then she was gone, I will never read her again. That book was disgraceful.
Awesome stickwithitness! 🎉 Good for you!
Thank you! 😊
You are looking absolutely amazing!
Thank you so much
Love S.A. Cosby
Totally agree about None of This is True!
GoodReads Good Choice Awards aka Tik Tok darlings or the "It Girl " of the moment. 🤨 Richard Osman was robbed. He most definitely was robbed!
Awesome video!!! 😄👍👏
Thank you 🤗
Catching up. What is KU, please? Must have missed the vocabulary chear sheet!
I think it’s an abbreviation for kindle unlimited
22:12 🤣🤣
Yeah I wasn't as charmed by Vera as I think I was supposed to be :/
I rarely like domestic thrillers because if the ultimate risk is a breakup... who cares? Like, people are dying out here, Becky, just get the divorce and move on.
Omg that is so real 😹
Oh man I am sooo excited for this one! Let’s get into in 💪
