I went into the cruel prince having super low expectations and unironically ended up loving it. it´s mismarketed on booktok as a enemies-to-lovers romance but it´s waaaay more than that. it has political intrigues, betrayals and like what might genuinely be my favorite main character ever who is also super morally gray. it breaks a lot of cliches and is just an overall good series. ofc if you don´t want to read it you shouldn't but you might just be missing out. :)
I completely agree. I recently bought the series bc there was a 2+1 deal and I was in a fantasy mood, but I was still scared to read them bc of how much they had been hyped up. And I discovered they've just been hyped up in the wrong way almost?? Enemies-to-lovers doesn't quite cover it indeed. If you're not up for a faerie kind of cruelty in the story or if you're expecting morally good, virtuous characters and wholesome love, I think you might put it down quickly. But that was exactly the kind of faerie story I was looking for tbh. I really really enjoyed the reading experience. They were really fast reads and got me out of a reading slump. The story isn't convoluted but keeps you on your toes and it's fun to be dragged along through its twists and bends. My only criticism is that the last book definitely lost some of its more intriguing political scheming for grander purposes (which I've been calling the GoT phenomenon in my head bc it reminds me of how transitioning from political scheming fantasy into more epic fantasy seems to be a very hard thing to pull off). Overall I really liked all three books. It just feels like a big twisted fairytale and I feel like it was meant to feel that way. Opinions and reading preferences are completely personal of course.
Omg that made me want to pick it up back again I have never really read any fantasy and got too overwhelmed before I even reached the middle of the first book.

I really loved The Thursday Murder Club, I also thought that it was nice that it was focussing on a group of older people, which you don’t always see in fiction these days.
I haven't read it, but based on the title and the focus on older characters it makes me think of the Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires (mystery following a group of middle-aged women)
for shadow and bone, i think the reason you may not recognize it as much is because (while s&b has many devoted fans) most people infinitely prefer the second series in the universe, six of crows, so maybe you’d recognize that one if you saw it
Also, there was a cover change for the series a few years back and I also had the problem that I had only seen the old covers and didn't immediately recognise the new ones.

I love that Jack's Babel pronunciation issue is literally just an iteration of the Tower of Babel myth. Like if he talks about it no one will understand the point because they'll be busy telling him he's saying it wrong. Very poetic

My heart broke a little when I saw Shadow and Bone there. But I honestly understand it's not the kind of book he gravitates towards. Here's to hoping he may one day!
No offense bt I'm also not much into fantasy books thus ig i understand why jack doesn't like these sort of books- we are like book sadists, i mean the most depressing and heart breaking books are gonna be our fav- again, realistic books that depict the world, our day to day life and human nature..and this is the very reason why i love this channel..jack and my book taste is very similar-bt i agree that fantasy is also a really cool genre- i hope I'd find a good fantasy book to fall in love with :)

I read and thoroughly enjoyed the the Thursday Murder Club, as did my mom who is an avid English mystery reader. I wonder if the online chatter about it doesn't reflect sales because the primary audience are less likely to post online reviews.
This is such a great point. The people certain books tend to go after will enjoy the hell out of those books. I have seen so many books with 4+ stars on Goodreads which I found really disappointing. I think Jack has a point for not liking it. The book is supposed a mystery, but I read the reviews and they say it focuses more on the characters and while it is fun, it is not for mystery lovers or smth. I may give it a try since I'm not a huge fan of that genre in general and prefer quirky characters above a black and white plot, but I can also see how I'd get annoyed based on the reviews I saw
I usually don’t read mystery but I LOVED The Thursday Murder Club, it’s so weirdly charming. And I enjoyed the sequel even more. Finishing off the books I’m reading before the third book!
I loved The Thursday Murder Club - it got me out of a huge reading slump - but it's the literary equivalent of cosy Sunday night TV drama. So if you enjoy that vibe you'll enjoy it, but if you like your murder mysteries to be dark, brooding and edgy, I can see how it would be a massive fail!

I actually really loved Thursday Murder Club! It's a very cute cozy mystery with some twists and turns and a really good heart! I've read it twice now and I've cried both times!
The only one on this list that hurts me is The Cruel Prince... the way it explores anger and the resentment of not hating something as much as you know you should and the very feminine rage of your anger not being taken seriously. plus it's just so atmospheric and uses that aesthetic to juxtapose itself brilliantly. oh well, I suppose this is just more motivation to somehow become famous enough that Jack will read all my favorite books 🤪

So glad someone else also feels the same way. I loved the cruel prince series. I don't ever claim it's a literary masterpiece but it pretty much is the peak of its genre for me. It does what it does excellently and doesn't try to be something its not. YA fae fantasy at its peak. I don't think I can enjoy another fae story again because I always compare them back to this series. Plus the characters aren't completely flat and one dimensional the way they usually are in YA fantasy.
Shadow and Bone isn’t really the most popular book in that universe. Six of Crows is really the best one and it’s a separate series but in the same universe.
Ok I had to come on and say this: as a huge murder mystery fan, I absolutely loved the Thursday Murder Club. Absolutely one of the best murder mysteries I have every read. It was extremely clever in reversing a very common trope in murder mystery (I won't say which trope as it would be a spoiler) and also managed to make the characters extremely likeable and I got really attached to them, which is rare for me, especially in the murder mystery genre which I feel often lacks character depth. I also love how it was written with being set in a retirement village, so the themes of life and death were very sensitively explored, which I feel added more depth to the book. I'm not sure if I maybe enjoyed it more having read so many murder mysteries and there were a lot of features of this that were new. Also, it is one of the only books that I have cried at! Sorry for the massive rant but I really felt I should defend this book as I genuinely feel it is very good and I now feel slightly protective of its reputation!

I’m watching all of Jacks video (I only recently found him) and I wanted to comment that I agree with this so much! The Thursday Murder Club is the book that got me back in to reading after not reading for years. Now I can’t go anywhere without an emotional support book lol. This is definitely one of my favourite books that I have ever read.
i could not finish Shatter me oh god BUT The Cruel Prince is a fun read honestly. It was such an easy read and the character growth in the 3 books was so fun and so beautiful
I definitely recommend Six of Crows, a duology in the Shadow and Bone universe, it’s a different series with different characters, it literally takes place on a different country but just in the same overall universe, and while there is a fantasy heist plot, it focuses more on the characters than the plot so I think you might like it!
The Cruel Prince was the first book I read that was present-tense writing. I went into the book with almost no expectations and ended up putting it in my favorite books section
Shadow and Bone isn't my cup of tea either, but I loved Six of Crows. Please, pleeeeease, give it a chance. The characters are fantastic and the plot is wonderful, too. After that I started to read S&B and really enjoyed it just because I fell in love with the world through SoC.
For what it's worth i JUST read Thursday murder club and loved it. It's sweet and soul crushing at the same time, it has representation, it talks of foreign places without vilainising them, AND takes care to mention a bit of their history. It might not be your thing based on what I've seen you rate highly, but I'd say it's still worth a read

I LOVED Thursday murder club and The man who died twice. It was just so witty and feel good and I honestly read it more for the characters that the actual murder mysteries. I also work in a nursing home so maybe I'm a little biased because I loved that I could see characteristics of my own patients in the main characters and therefore could imagine some of them in the story which made it really fun for me to read.
I can't imagine Jack becoming a Fantasy king but weirdly I feel like he will enjoy Six of crows. There is not a world where he will enjoy Shadow and bones but on the other hand I can imagine Jack Psycho analysing Kaz while loving our bi king Jesper.

Hmmm The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a really well story. I think people dogged it upon release bc they were desperate for a Haymitch book. But it’s such a great book. Also Babel is literally one of the best books ever. Read it!!
right? I hated Snow before but his story is well written! It doesn't really change your perception of him but it explores his personality and choices in a great way and also shows hunger games in different life, when it didn't have a 'budget'.
I really loved The Thursday Murder Club, and the sequel is even better. I really, really enjoyed it. The characters are just so charming and funny and quintessentially British. The books are not mind blowing, lyrical literature but for their genre, I think they are really impressive and enjoyable books. Especially the second one. There is also something very charming and special and unusual about how the story is told by, and revolves around, pensioners. He really shows how the characters are so capable and experienced and interested and engaged, despite being underestimated, somewhat in parallel to the “meddling kids” in Scooby-Doo. How there can be so much more to be had from life, and to offer to others, when you are nearing the end of it. How age really is just a number.
You know, I love a murder mystery but I hadn’t taken much notice of this because the only thing I knew about it was the name and author. I like pointless, but that much lol but your description has made me change my mind!
I actually think you’d really enjoy The Cruel Prince trilogy, it’s less of a romance story and focuses more on politics and whatnot instead and the MC is truly interesting and well developed
Popular books may either be good or bad. Just because those types of books are mainstream doesn’t necessarily mean everyone’s gonna like reading them. As book readers, we all have different tastes. We all understand you, Jack. You seem to have a very specific taste for books, and that’s perfectly fine. You don’t have to read to impress or appeal to a certain audience.

omg I loved the Thursday murder club and I've literally never seen someone say they didn't like it🤣 it's really good because there are lots of different questions to investigate and they don't end up all having the same underlying explanation. but I get that not every likes that in a mystery
The Thursday Murder Club is so good! It's fun and the characters are super adorable. It's a great, funny, easy read and I think you're missing out on that even if it won't be a favourite! Plus I'd say pronounce it Bay-bel because it's set in Oxford 😅
For shatter me the covers of the series have a meaning behind them. It does look simlar to Kylie and kendalls book but it far much better than that atrocity.
Would really recommend the audible version of The Thursday Murder Club if you don't feel like reading them. Such great characters and one of the most witty and wholesome book series I've read/listened to over the last year. Definitely looking forward to the third one too

I read The Thursday Murder Club with a friend for our bookclub and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It's written in such a funny and witty, but also touching way. I absolutely fell in love with the characters and the plot is really captivating too. So I'd buzzing if you read it anyway someday... Also, congratulations on your nomination, you deserve it!!!! 👏👏
"A Little Life" is on my list of books I'll probably never read. I know the BookTube world loves it! But it sounds so much like "misery porn", I'm just not into it. Some of Amy Tan's books are like that, but they have a bit more hope in them.
It's a difficult read, definitely, and you don't have to read it, but I'm here to say there is a lot of warmth and joy and love in the book as well, which people don't focus on because of the harder stuff. So for me Shuggie Bain was a much harsher and more miserable read because it was all negative and not balanced with any good. A Little Life was a very sad book, but it had a lot of happiness in it as well which is what makes it beautiful.
I personally would not recommend the book, so yeah don't read it if it doesn't sound like you'll like it. The writing style is beautiful but other than that there's not much about the book that's enjoyable. People always rave about the depiction of friendship or whatever when that's really only the first 200 or so pages and then the author forgets that half the characters even exist. Obviously everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but I don't think the writing style in any way makes up for the misery depicted, it's not fun to read and I feel like it's also not as deep as people pretend it is.
@@hibellla Don’t convince people otherwise. You can’t just say “give it a go” when you have no clue if it’ll be too detrimental for them. This isn’t a book that deserves to be recommended lightly.
I highly recommend The Thursday Murder Club! That book and its sequel are some of the best books I've read in the past two years. It's one of the few books that made me actually laugh out loud (a literal lol), but it also handles some pretty heavy themes considering the age of the protagonists.

I'd read six of crows instead of shadow and bone, it's a sister duology, and it's not only better, but it makes the shadow and bone netflix series make a lot more sense (since they merged both book series' together in it)

Ironically when I was reading The Thursday Murder Club I was just always thinking 'I'm sure Jack would love this' and thinking of what he'd say about certain lines. Perhaps because he's the only British bookish creator on YT that I follow, perhaps because I was consuming a lot of his videos at the time.😂 Anyway I'm very surprised he would rule out The Thursday Murder Club like that. Sure, the plot isn't like this world-shattering novelty, or a gut-punch or whatever makes popular books popular, but I really liked the care the author put into crafting every character. It's so insightful in the way old people are, and reminded me of my grandparents constantly. Nostalgic even on the first read. Great book.

Honestly I wouldn't if I were you. I absolutely loved A little life, but To paradise was very different. Still pretty good and interesting, but it took me forever to read, and it didn't really impact me. I gave it 3,5 stars.
Definitely not the same. I loved the third part of To Paradise and really enjoyed the second part. This book and its characters stayed with me for a few weeks, but more in a “I’m thinking of them” rather that “I’m crying over them” way
I read both and I enjoyed to paradise (not even close to as much as ALL), BUT. Jack’s explanation of why he wouldn’t read to paradise made me laugh bc in the US the cover of a little life is a photo of a man
honestly i was also offput by the cover of to paradise but read it anyway because i loved a little life and im really happy i did. it was a very hard and emotional read (duh) but was so important and had so many layers to it, also it is divided into three seprate stories, basically three books and they just get better and better as the book continues, so i highly reccomend it :)
okay you have to read Babel, it's my most anticipated read of the year and the concept is AMAZING. I think you'd like it! It's all about translation, academia, and white washing specifically in academia. Give it a try and we promise not to pick on you for the pronunciation hahaha

Respectfully, shatter me was the first book I read after not reading for years as I had to do a fashion project based of a book. Shatter me got me back into reading and into uni (I put the project in my portfolio for my uni application) so it has a close place to my heart. But now after reading so many other books and figuring out the genres, style of writing and authors I love. I have to say that shatter me is no longer a 5 star for me. However I would definitely recommend the book to new readers. NORMALISE CHANGING YOUR OPINIONS ON BOOKS!!
I appreciate why people would like Shatter Me, like it has a certain vibe, etc. But the plot isn't executed amazingly, the main character is insufferable, and the writing in general is bone-achingly cringeworthy, like it's BAD.
Jack I LOVE LOVE LOVED the Thursday Murder Club!!! My top book of this year so far, it’s so quintessentially British, it captures our Brit humour so so well. I love that it focuses on the older generation, and how the characters are underestimated simply because they’re elderly and they use that to their advantage, and the actual murder mystery of it is also so fun!! I can’t recommend it more highly!!!
I totally get your opinion on To Paradise and agree but im just intrigued about the premise of the story and its 3 different narratives, as well as the fact that i also loved A Little Life and im interested in seeing what else the author can write. R. F. Kuang made a tiktok on the pronunciation of Babel and said either way is correct, so just say it how you normally would and don't worry about it. Im going to read it because the poppy war trilogy is so well written and gives me a lot to think about so im sure Babel will gives us lots to talk about too. honestly i was a little skeptical of the hunger games prequel at first, but it's honestly really good! it offers some really cool insight into the world of panem and snow as a character. also, i know there are some interesting theories that are directly related to katniss so... i am also so attached to thg but i don't think it will mess with your perception of the original trilogy at all.
5:20 here’s a bit of hype, if it happens to convince you: i adored the thursday murder club, it’s genuinely funny, deeply british, has wonderful characters and a fascinating plot, and despite being a comedy it did move me to tears at least once. i think you’ve mentioned liking agatha christie, and im not saying it’s necessarily similar, but i do think you’ll enjoy it a lot :D and if you dont, it’s an easy read, so you’ll be done with it pretty quickly and can move on with your life afterwards

I actually found the Thursday murder club absolutely delightful, one of the best books of the year. The writing is quite "simple" certainly not a lyrical novel, but it is so witty and funny and sweet, cool (not incredible, but cool) plot twist at the end and has a couple of really great quotes. Try and pick it up for a light read!

I love your videos. And you really elevate booktube with your content. So you def deserve to be singled out with nominations and awards. You are a very special case and a little bit of an oddity on youtube, cause you are just too sophisticated in regards to your taste in literature and educational background. But you are also exceedingly witty and quite the entertainer. You know how to tell a story. Maybe there still is a lot you might be able to learn about the medium film and improve your technical skills, or tools, but if anything, we all want to see and hear more from you, regardless of image, sound-quality and mise-en-scene ^^. As long as we can hear you talk we dont even mind echoes or the like. And your recent Paris vlog series also proved that you have all the cinematographic abilities, but it is probably a hell of lot of work and you always seem like you have too many jobs and projects on your plate at any given point in time. So we love you and your content just the way it is. You bring sophisticated world literature to the stupid infantile masses and make it seem fun to read the classics and literary legends. You said multiple times you had "big book fear". Okay Jack its fine if you don't read shadow and bone, but you HAVE to read the Six of Crows duology. It's a spinoff series to Shadow and Bone. The writing is just marvelous; this series is why shadow and bone even became famous in the first place. You won't regret reading Six of Crows honestly.

Tbf I read THG prequel after reading the series years ago and I did really enjoy it. Something about going back into that world and the writing style was so nostalgic. I actually thought it was a valuable addition to the series. Deffo recommend!
Out of all of these, the only one I have read is the Thursday Murder Club, and I personally really enjoyed it. I read the sequel too, and I'm looking forward to the last one coming out. I thought it was a well written murder mystery, set in a very different location to normal, so it was a nice change of pac e. I don't know if it was my favourite book of the year (though I personally prefer non-fiction, ) but I really liked it, and would read it again. If you've already got a copy I would recommend reading it!
I gave The Thursday Murder Club 4 stars. It’s a cute, feel-good read. It kind of reminds me of Fredrick Backman’s My Grandmother Told Me To Tell You She’s Sorry, specifically in the writing style and its way of presenting the story to the reader. Although, don’t let Backman’s name drop heighten your expectations. I haven’t read A Man Called Ove, and I know you absolutely loved it, plus I suspect that I’ll like it more than MGTMTTYSS, when I finally do get around to reading it, purely based on what I’ve been hearing about it. Anyway, I’m not trying to pressure you into reading The Thursday Murder Club, but I just never knew you to be one to solely judge a book based on what others are saying about it. And, I think that if you do decide to pick it up off your shelves, you might think it a pretty decent read. 😁💜✨🌼🦄✌️✨

I'm reading The Thursday Murder Club now and I'm really enjoying it! I've also only heard good things about it, so I'm surprised you had a different experience. Anyway, you should try it! Also, The Cruel Prince was really good! it starts slow but really picks up and the second and third instalment in the series are even better. If you still don't fancy it, maybe try a different series by Holly Black? I recommend The Curse Workers. Or her Modern Tales of Faerie series. :)

I went into the cruel prince having super low expectations and unironically ended up loving it. it´s mismarketed on booktok as a enemies-to-lovers romance but it´s waaaay more than that. it has political intrigues, betrayals and like what might genuinely be my favorite main character ever who is also super morally gray. it breaks a lot of cliches and is just an overall good series. ofc if you don´t want to read it you shouldn't but you might just be missing out. :)
I completely agree. I recently bought the series bc there was a 2+1 deal and I was in a fantasy mood, but I was still scared to read them bc of how much they had been hyped up. And I discovered they've just been hyped up in the wrong way almost?? Enemies-to-lovers doesn't quite cover it indeed. If you're not up for a faerie kind of cruelty in the story or if you're expecting morally good, virtuous characters and wholesome love, I think you might put it down quickly. But that was exactly the kind of faerie story I was looking for tbh. I really really enjoyed the reading experience. They were really fast reads and got me out of a reading slump. The story isn't convoluted but keeps you on your toes and it's fun to be dragged along through its twists and bends. My only criticism is that the last book definitely lost some of its more intriguing political scheming for grander purposes (which I've been calling the GoT phenomenon in my head bc it reminds me of how transitioning from political scheming fantasy into more epic fantasy seems to be a very hard thing to pull off). Overall I really liked all three books. It just feels like a big twisted fairytale and I feel like it was meant to feel that way. Opinions and reading preferences are completely personal of course.

I really loved The Thursday Murder Club, I also thought that it was nice that it was focussing on a group of older people, which you don’t always see in fiction these days.

for shadow and bone, i think the reason you may not recognize it as much is because (while s&b has many devoted fans) most people infinitely prefer the second series in the universe, six of crows, so maybe you’d recognize that one if you saw it
Also, there was a cover change for the series a few years back and I also had the problem that I had only seen the old covers and didn't immediately recognise the new ones.

No offense bt I'm also not much into fantasy books thus ig i understand why jack doesn't like these sort of books- we are like book sadists, i mean the most depressing and heart breaking books are gonna be our fav- again, realistic books that depict the world, our day to day life and human nature..and this is the very reason why i love this channel..jack and my book taste is very similar-bt i agree that fantasy is also a really cool genre- i hope I'd find a good fantasy book to fall in love with :)

This is such a great point. The people certain books tend to go after will enjoy the hell out of those books. I have seen so many books with 4+ stars on Goodreads which I found really disappointing. I think Jack has a point for not liking it. The book is supposed a mystery, but I read the reviews and they say it focuses more on the characters and while it is fun, it is not for mystery lovers or smth. I may give it a try since I'm not a huge fan of that genre in general and prefer quirky characters above a black and white plot, but I can also see how I'd get annoyed based on the reviews I saw

I loved The Thursday Murder Club - it got me out of a huge reading slump - but it's the literary equivalent of cosy Sunday night TV drama. So if you enjoy that vibe you'll enjoy it, but if you like your murder mysteries to be dark, brooding and edgy, I can see how it would be a massive fail!

I actually really loved Thursday Murder Club! It's a very cute cozy mystery with some twists and turns and a really good heart! I've read it twice now and I've cried both times!
The only one on this list that hurts me is The Cruel Prince... the way it explores anger and the resentment of not hating something as much as you know you should and the very feminine rage of your anger not being taken seriously. plus it's just so atmospheric and uses that aesthetic to juxtapose itself brilliantly.
oh well, I suppose this is just more motivation to somehow become famous enough that Jack will read all my favorite books 🤪

So glad someone else also feels the same way. I loved the cruel prince series. I don't ever claim it's a literary masterpiece but it pretty much is the peak of its genre for me. It does what it does excellently and doesn't try to be something its not. YA fae fantasy at its peak. I don't think I can enjoy another fae story again because I always compare them back to this series. Plus the characters aren't completely flat and one dimensional the way they usually are in YA fantasy.
Shadow and Bone isn’t really the most popular book in that universe. Six of Crows is really the best one and it’s a separate series but in the same universe.
Ok I had to come on and say this: as a huge murder mystery fan, I absolutely loved the Thursday Murder Club. Absolutely one of the best murder mysteries I have every read. It was extremely clever in reversing a very common trope in murder mystery (I won't say which trope as it would be a spoiler) and also managed to make the characters extremely likeable and I got really attached to them, which is rare for me, especially in the murder mystery genre which I feel often lacks character depth. I also love how it was written with being set in a retirement village, so the themes of life and death were very sensitively explored, which I feel added more depth to the book. I'm not sure if I maybe enjoyed it more having read so many murder mysteries and there were a lot of features of this that were new. Also, it is one of the only books that I have cried at! Sorry for the massive rant but I really felt I should defend this book as I genuinely feel it is very good and I now feel slightly protective of its reputation!

I’m watching all of Jacks video (I only recently found him) and I wanted to comment that I agree with this so much! The Thursday Murder Club is the book that got me back in to reading after not reading for years. Now I can’t go anywhere without an emotional support book lol. This is definitely one of my favourite books that I have ever read.

I definitely recommend Six of Crows, a duology in the Shadow and Bone universe, it’s a different series with different characters, it literally takes place on a different country but just in the same overall universe, and while there is a fantasy heist plot, it focuses more on the characters than the plot so I think you might like it!
The Cruel Prince was the first book I read that was present-tense writing. I went into the book with almost no expectations and ended up putting it in my favorite books section
Shadow and Bone isn't my cup of tea either, but I loved Six of Crows. Please, pleeeeease, give it a chance. The characters are fantastic and the plot is wonderful, too. After that I started to read S&B and really enjoyed it just because I fell in love with the world through SoC.

For what it's worth i JUST read Thursday murder club and loved it. It's sweet and soul crushing at the same time, it has representation, it talks of foreign places without vilainising them, AND takes care to mention a bit of their history. It might not be your thing based on what I've seen you rate highly, but I'd say it's still worth a read
I somehow knew A Court of Thorns and Roses would be on this list and I love that series. 😂 It's not really Jack's preferred genre.

It was a DNF for me. I was a 100 pages from the ending, and then I stopped. I eventually just gave all my books to my mom.

I LOVED Thursday murder club and The man who died twice. It was just so witty and feel good and I honestly read it more for the characters that the actual murder mysteries. I also work in a nursing home so maybe I'm a little biased because I loved that I could see characteristics of my own patients in the main characters and therefore could imagine some of them in the story which made it really fun for me to read.
I can't imagine Jack becoming a Fantasy king but weirdly I feel like he will enjoy Six of crows. There is not a world where he will enjoy Shadow and bones but on the other hand I can imagine Jack Psycho analysing Kaz while loving our bi king Jesper.

I really loved The Thursday Murder Club and The Man Who Died Twice, I'm so excited for the third entry which releases in September as well. It's the perfect cozy crime novel.
Hmmm The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a really well story. I think people dogged it upon release bc they were desperate for a Haymitch book. But it’s such a great book.

right? I hated Snow before but his story is well written! It doesn't really change your perception of him but it explores his personality and choices in a great way and also shows hunger games in different life, when it didn't have a 'budget'.

I really loved The Thursday Murder Club, and the sequel is even better. I really, really enjoyed it. The characters are just so charming and funny and quintessentially British. The books are not mind blowing, lyrical literature but for their genre, I think they are really impressive and enjoyable books. Especially the second one. There is also something very charming and special and unusual about how the story is told by, and revolves around, pensioners. He really shows how the characters are so capable and experienced and interested and engaged, despite being underestimated, somewhat in parallel to the “meddling kids” in Scooby-Doo. How there can be so much more to be had from life, and to offer to others, when you are nearing the end of it. How age really is just a number.

Popular books may either be good or bad. Just because those types of books are mainstream doesn’t necessarily mean everyone’s gonna like reading them. As book readers, we all have different tastes. We all understand you, Jack. You seem to have a very specific taste for books, and that’s perfectly fine. You don’t have to read to impress or appeal to a certain audience.
My main wish this year is for Jack Edwards to start reading and reviewing south american fiction, in particular Isabel Allende and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Please!

I read The Thursday Murder Club with a friend for our bookclub and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It's written in such a funny and witty, but also touching way. I absolutely fell in love with the characters and the plot is really captivating too. So I'd buzzing if you read it anyway someday...

"A Little Life" is on my list of books I'll probably never read. I know the BookTube world loves it! But it sounds so much like "misery porn", I'm just not into it. Some of Amy Tan's books are like that, but they have a bit more hope in them.

@@hibellla there’s lot of triggers in this book, it’s just not for everyone so if she/ he doesn’t want to read it, then it’s her/it’s choice.
It's a difficult read, definitely, and you don't have to read it, but I'm here to say there is a lot of warmth and joy and love in the book as well, which people don't focus on because of the harder stuff. So for me Shuggie Bain was a much harsher and more miserable read because it was all negative and not balanced with any good. A Little Life was a very sad book, but it had a lot of happiness in it as well which is what makes it beautiful.
I personally would not recommend the book, so yeah don't read it if it doesn't sound like you'll like it. The writing style is beautiful but other than that there's not much about the book that's enjoyable. People always rave about the depiction of friendship or whatever when that's really only the first 200 or so pages and then the author forgets that half the characters even exist. Obviously everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but I don't think the writing style in any way makes up for the misery depicted, it's not fun to read and I feel like it's also not as deep as people pretend it is.

I highly recommend The Thursday Murder Club! That book and its sequel are some of the best books I've read in the past two years. It's one of the few books that made me actually laugh out loud (a literal lol), but it also handles some pretty heavy themes considering the age of the protagonists.

I'd read six of crows instead of shadow and bone, it's a sister duology, and it's not only better, but it makes the shadow and bone netflix series make a lot more sense (since they merged both book series' together in it)

Ironically when I was reading The Thursday Murder Club I was just always thinking 'I'm sure Jack would love this' and thinking of what he'd say about certain lines. Perhaps because he's the only British bookish creator on YT that I follow, perhaps because I was consuming a lot of his videos at the time.😂
Anyway I'm very surprised he would rule out The Thursday Murder Club like that. Sure, the plot isn't like this world-shattering novelty, or a gut-punch or whatever makes popular books popular, but I really liked the care the author put into crafting every character. It's so insightful in the way old people are, and reminded me of my grandparents constantly. Nostalgic even on the first read. Great book.

I want to read To Paradise, simply because of how much A Little Life impacted me. But I agree with the rest.
Honestly I wouldn't if I were you. I absolutely loved A little life, but To paradise was very different. Still pretty good and interesting, but it took me forever to read, and it didn't really impact me. I gave it 3,5 stars.
Definitely not the same. I loved the third part of To Paradise and really enjoyed the second part. This book and its characters stayed with me for a few weeks, but more in a “I’m thinking of them” rather that “I’m crying over them” way
I read both and I enjoyed to paradise (not even close to as much as ALL), BUT. Jack’s explanation of why he wouldn’t read to paradise made me laugh bc in the US the cover of a little life is a photo of a man
honestly i was also offput by the cover of to paradise but read it anyway because i loved a little life and im really happy i did. it was a very hard and emotional read (duh) but was so important and had so many layers to it, also it is divided into three seprate stories, basically three books and they just get better and better as the book continues, so i highly reccomend it :)

Respectfully, shatter me was the first book I read after not reading for years as I had to do a fashion project based of a book. Shatter me got me back into reading and into uni (I put the project in my portfolio for my uni application) so it has a close place to my heart. But now after reading so many other books and figuring out the genres, style of writing and authors I love. I have to say that shatter me is no longer a 5 star for me. However I would definitely recommend the book to new readers. NORMALISE CHANGING YOUR OPINIONS ON BOOKS!!
I appreciate why people would like Shatter Me, like it has a certain vibe, etc. But the plot isn't executed amazingly, the main character is insufferable, and the writing in general is bone-achingly cringeworthy, like it's BAD.
Jack I LOVE LOVE LOVED the Thursday Murder Club!!! My top book of this year so far, it’s so quintessentially British, it captures our Brit humour so so well. I love that it focuses on the older generation, and how the characters are underestimated simply because they’re elderly and they use that to their advantage, and the actual murder mystery of it is also so fun!! I can’t recommend it more highly!!!
I totally get your opinion on To Paradise and agree but im just intrigued about the premise of the story and its 3 different narratives, as well as the fact that i also loved A Little Life and im interested in seeing what else the author can write.
R. F. Kuang made a tiktok on the pronunciation of Babel and said either way is correct, so just say it how you normally would and don't worry about it. Im going to read it because the poppy war trilogy is so well written and gives me a lot to think about so im sure Babel will gives us lots to talk about too.

honestly i was a little skeptical of the hunger games prequel at first, but it's honestly really good! it offers some really cool insight into the world of panem and snow as a character. also, i know there are some interesting theories that are directly related to katniss so...

5:20 here’s a bit of hype, if it happens to convince you: i adored the thursday murder club, it’s genuinely funny, deeply british, has wonderful characters and a fascinating plot, and despite being a comedy it did move me to tears at least once. i think you’ve mentioned liking agatha christie, and im not saying it’s necessarily similar, but i do think you’ll enjoy it a lot :D and if you dont, it’s an easy read, so you’ll be done with it pretty quickly and can move on with your life afterwards

I actually found the Thursday murder club absolutely delightful, one of the best books of the year. The writing is quite "simple" certainly not a lyrical novel, but it is so witty and funny and sweet, cool (not incredible, but cool) plot twist at the end and has a couple of really great quotes. Try and pick it up for a light read!
I listened to the Thursday Murder Club on Audible and LOVED it. Highly recommend- an engaging & fun reader who does voices for each character

Thursday Murder Club and the next in the series, The Man Who Died Twice, are sooo good!! Some of my fav books I’ve read, the characters are so witty and they make me laugh out loud! 😂

I love your videos. And you really elevate booktube with your content. So you def deserve to be singled out with nominations and awards. You are a very special case and a little bit of an oddity on youtube, cause you are just too sophisticated in regards to your taste in literature and educational background. But you are also exceedingly witty and quite the entertainer. You know how to tell a story. Maybe there still is a lot you might be able to learn about the medium film and improve your technical skills, or tools, but if anything, we all want to see and hear more from you, regardless of image, sound-quality and mise-en-scene ^^. As long as we can hear you talk we dont even mind echoes or the like. And your recent Paris vlog series also proved that you have all the cinematographic abilities, but it is probably a hell of lot of work and you always seem like you have too many jobs and projects on your plate at any given point in time. So we love you and your content just the way it is. You bring sophisticated world literature to the stupid infantile masses and make it seem fun to read the classics and literary legends. You said multiple times you had "big book fear". I have had "old book fear", "sophisticated book fear", "sad/depressing book fear", "culture I am not currently excited about book fear", "too serious book fear", but watching your channel gives me the ability to approach literature I never otherwise would have attempted. Okay Jack its fine if you don't read shadow and bone, but you HAVE to read the Six of Crows duology. It's a spinoff series to Shadow and Bone. The writing is just marvelous; this series is why shadow and bone even became famous in the first place. You won't regret reading Six of Crows honestly.

Tbf I read THG prequel after reading the series years ago and I did really enjoy it. Something about going back into that world and the writing style was so nostalgic. I actually thought it was a valuable addition to the series. Deffo recommend!
Out of all of these, the only one I have read is the Thursday Murder Club, and I personally really enjoyed it. I read the sequel too, and I'm looking forward to the last one coming out. I thought it was a well written murder mystery, set in a very different location to normal, so it was a nice change of pac e. I don't know if it was my favourite book of the year (though I personally prefer non-fiction, ) but I really liked it, and would read it again. If you've already got a copy I would recommend reading it!
I gave The Thursday Murder Club 4 stars. It’s a cute, feel-good read. It kind of reminds me of Fredrick Backman’s My Grandmother Told Me To Tell You She’s Sorry, specifically in the writing style and its way of presenting the story to the reader. Although, don’t let Backman’s name drop heighten your expectations. I haven’t read A Man Called Ove, and I know you absolutely loved it, plus I suspect that I’ll like it more than MGTMTTYSS, when I finally do get around to reading it, purely based on what I’ve been hearing about it.
Anyway, I’m not trying to pressure you into reading The Thursday Murder Club, but I just never knew you to be one to solely judge a book based on what others are saying about it. And, I think that if you do decide to pick it up off your shelves, you might think it a pretty decent read.

I'm reading The Thursday Murder Club now and I'm really enjoying it! I've also only heard good things about it, so I'm surprised you had a different experience. Anyway, you should try it! Also, The Cruel Prince was really good! it starts slow but really picks up and the second and third instalment in the series are even better. If you still don't fancy it, maybe try a different series by Holly Black? I recommend The Curse Workers. Or her Modern Tales of Faerie series. :)

Alot of youtubers I follow said they don't wanna read cruel prince then read it and enjoy it. And it makes them want to read the whole series! PLEASE JACK BAHAHAHA!
I understand a court of throns of roses, its a bit all over the place. Cruel prince has a political view as its main genre and the romance its quite a sub plot

Yeah, I didn't think that I would enjoy Cruel Prince that much - but I was wrong and the series only got better and better as I read it

I also was kinda sure that I would never read FOA series but somehow I got into a situation where I had nothing else to do but listen to cruel prince audio and end up loving it too much that I brought the physical trilogy set 😂
LOVED the Thursday murder club! Definitely give it a chance. I really enjoyed it and really felt for the characters and loved that they were old and in a care home and you find out about there past lives or it could be because I love an old school murder mystery (murder she wrote vibes)
I realllyyyy hope you change your mind on Babel :) idk how it’s pronounced either, and usually when that’s the case, I’ll wait until I can hear the audiobooks pronunciation or hear the author pronounce it in an interview. I haven’t been excited about a book like I have been for Babel in probably a decade ❤
Thursday Murder Club is awesome!! And sometimes it's just nice to read something fun that isn't about "rights" "prejudice" "inequality " and all the horrors we are surrounded by every day.
