I love Her Little Flowers, but I completely agree with you. It's not horror. It doesn't belong in horror. It's 100% mismarketed. It's paranormal, but like a cozy paranormal book. I would personally compare it to Practical Magic.
What a great video! 1) The Reformatory was my pick for the awards. Something I've learned about myself this year is that I love horror in a historical setting, and this book was so constantly stressful and terrifying that I couldn't pick anything else for best horror. (I absolutely adored Mister Magic, but it was not the best *horror* novel of the year to me.) 2) I agree so much about Sisters of the Lost Nation - being nonlinear actively harmed the story + it felt more like a thriller than a horror. I also gave it 3 stars, but I will be trying his second novel coming out in 2024 (Indian Burial Ground). 3) You've sold me on Natural Beauty, and dissuaded me from Vampires of El Norte (I really don't like romance overall). I hadn't read anyone talk about Natural Beauty but I figured it was going to be non-stop body horror? But I love weird things, and my favorite novel of the year is a "literary horror" (The God of Endings) so I want to give it a shot now!
Yes they definitely mismarketed Vampires of El Norte - that is a Western Historical Romance.. with a sprinkling of "horror" .. too bad because that cover is stunning! I rated it 3⭐ I think just because it was not Horror. I don't read Romance but I didn't DNF it, so that's saying something I guess lol.
