I totally love your pattern. I have made 375 hats for a major hospital in our area. Volunteer Services at our hospital has let me know that the medical staff absolutely love them. Because I was making so many I tweeked the pattern slightly to make the process just a bit faster. I am still making more. I have a huge sewing room and am trying to use up a lot of material. I have made a few different styles but none are as good as this one. I am 80 yrs old and I have used over 100 yards of fabric. Thankyou for sharing your pattern. Happy sewing.

Thank you for sharing without charging a penny as some do, it is greatly appreciated for those of us who may not have that extra penny.
Hi, I'm a dental hygienist who has been making masks and scrub caps for family, friends, and coworkers. I have done much research and love your scrub cap design and use of fabric! Way to go! Also, your kitchen is gorgeous, your accent is adorable and both deserve an honorable mention 😉
Melissa Southerly thank you for your sweet comment! I love to hear back from people who have used my pattern. Also, thank you for the nice comment about my kitchen- I love it, too! Where are you from?

Thank you for taking the time to give the measurements, my printer doesn’t work from phone, so that worked out well. Plus I was watching you from my tv!!! Thank you again and thanks for your service! God bless!
Just made your pattern with some fantastic nurse material and it is just perfect. I love the French hem that you added. I'm going to use a French hem all the time now. Glad you added it.
Hi...Just watched your video. You have made a wonderful quality scrub cap...French seams and all!!! I've sewn for six decades and appreciate your project! I do have a couple of suggestions. First, try not to sew with the bulk of your work going through the arm of the sewing machine. You'll find it is much easier to handle your project. Second, if you pin or stitch the end of your elastic to the entry end of your casing, you can pull it through far enough to sew both ends using just 5" of elastic and saving 2". I loved your clear, through instructions delivered with your wonderful down home Southern accent. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing...KMc
I just love this video. I've watched it a couple of times and have a cap/mask cut out and I'm ready to go! Thanks so much for all the time you put into this.
A thousand thank you's for this pattern and tutorial!!! I have a couple of tips to add. If your print is directional it takes more fabric. Mine was, so instead of making the band and ties I used 1.5" grosgrain ribbon. I used 12" for the elastic casing and 48" for the band and ties. Also, if your fabric is only 21", don't freak out when the oval point doesn't match the band. You can trim that and cover it in the casing.
Valerie Schlink also, you are correct about the directional fabric- I learned that the hard way- also, if it I directional, you have to be careful about making sure you don’t sew a piece on upside down- I’ve also made that mistake! LOL! But sewing is a learning process, so everyone has to mess a few things up to learn- and have a good Seam Ripper 😃
Julaine Taylor thank you so much for the sweet comment! I do enjoy teaching, and I teach the junior and senior dental students at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. I’m glad your cap turned out well! 😀
I love the thought that has gone into making this nice on the inside too. I am going to be making caps for children who are having surgery and they take them home. Fat quarters is such a good idea and you are really economical with the fabric. Thank you so much for this pattern and video 😊
Thank you so much for you coming up with this scrub cap tutorial my niece came to me crying where she works as a caregiver some patients came up with Covid, she ask me to make her some head coverings and I’m glad I found your site many thanks for making it so easy
THIS PATTERN IS AMAZING AND YOUR DIRECTIONS ARE AWESOME!! Super easy to follow I appreciate you sharing your own templates with us! Made a couple of scrub caps for my self and honestly my unit is always complementing them! 😘😘😘
I am watching your video again and I am just amaze with it so simple and yes it does take time and patience to sew. I love the way that you made the raw edges so neat at the top of the cap.....by the way super duper job to your daughter for recording so we'll even though you had to instruct her to move in a little closer ever now n then.....great job
Thank you so much for taking the time to make a video and share your pattern! It came together easily. The only adjustment I made was to piece A, the cap top. I made a 6x9 oval instead which was easier for me to freehand.
This video was awesome! I made the cap along with you and your directions were clear and concise! I accidentally missed the french seam step, but the cap still turned out looking great. Thanks!
Thank you! I’ve been looking for a fat quarter scrub cap pattern, and I knew there had to be a pattern out there somewhere. When I saw this post I thought your name sounded familiar. I’m from Mendenhall, MS. I have been making masks and caps for local hospitals. I can’t wait to try this pattern. I’m addicted to buying fat quarters! 😊
This is an awesome pattern! Thanks so much for sharing it! I couldn’t find any 1/8 inch elastic so I used a round elastic hair band and cut it in half. Worked like a charm! So far I’ve made 3 over the weekend and my goal is to make one for every nurse in our office so I have 4 to go. Looks cute too to let your hair come out the back in a pony tail with the tie underneath. We are nor “required” to use a cap but we do have to wear a mask and googles and the googles do a number on your hair and forehead so this cap will be great. I think I’ll put some buttons on the sides too for the mask. I love to sew and even better love to make things for other people, so thanks again!!!
Steph Thankyou so much for this video My son is also a dentist in Truro England I was tasked with making these caps I couldn’t have done this without your help Once again Thankyou so much
Thank you for sharing your pattern. I made one last night and wore it to work in the OR today. Lots of compliments and people asking where I bought it. Shared your video with my coworkers.
@@mamajsewing The first one I made had a little point left on piece A. I just tucked it into the binding. I made 2 more today using my cricut to cut out the pieces. Instead of a teardrop shape, I used a 6 x 9 oval and it fit a little better.
FYI: the first encased seam you made is called a French seam and what you call as bias tape are really binding tape because the strips are not cut on the bias. Important terms to not confuse your viewers who may not be that familiar with sewing.
Judy Bruce I was JUST going to say that! Thank goodness we’re paying attention. I’m getting ready to make 60 sets for my niece and her staff at a hospital on the east coast.
Enjoyed making this easy cap. I did find it small. I think I’ll have to make the circular piece larger and add a couple of inches to E piece. Thank you
I love your video, I've been making one similar to it but without the bias or binding tape or encasing the raw edge on the uner side, I can't wait to try this pattern.
@@sullivansteph my daughter is making clothes for her baby girl I told her even if you don't mask the caps check this video out cause I think you might get some ideas for making the clothes too, she's now using the French seam too
Thank you for designing this surgical cap pattern and for sharing it with us. I love how you make very good use of the fat quarter; I also don't like fabric waste. I need to practice cutting with my Rotary Cutter; this might be the pattern to help me with that.
I'm so happy to have found your pattern and instructions. I made it through without any problems. But the hat is so small on my head it barely touches the top of my ears. I have plenty of fabric so I'll use it to make the oval larger and the front band too. Thank you though. Great job!
Really nice Bernina. Good video, thank you. A Clover Bamboo Stiletto will guide the fabric under the foot, and you don't have to get your finger close to the needle. I use mine a lot.
If you use two safety pins with threading your elastic, one on each end, you can stop the elastic 'sucking' right up in to the tube, especially if you use a really big one on the end.
Thanks so much for this most excellent tutorial! And for explaining what a fat quarter is 🤣 I’m from Australia and had no clue! Think I’ll give this ago👍 stay safe
Your graph paper and notes are great BUT you do not have a measurement for the cap and or a pattern for the cap piece A...how does one get that piece???...never mind I just saw your video and saw that u said its 6x9. Duh I feel like a nerd sorry about that.
I wish I could find fat quarters for a dollar! They are $3.50-$5.00 around here. I am going to make some of these for a respiratory therapist friend who works the Covid units at our hospital, thank you for the pattern!
Loved loved loved the video! I had a little trouble cutting out the oval with the point on the end. Is there a way for you to include that in your instructions and make it printable to scale? Thank you!
Thanks for this pattern! You make it seem very easy. Just checking before I cut - if we wanted to make one like the one you're wearing in the beginning of the video (with the black band at the front) - we would cut the E and 2 D's out of the black fabric and the rest out of the patterned fabric?
sullivansteph . Super excited to have completed 2 scrub caps for my friends , a husband and wife working in ICU . I figured it all out easily and now have made a paper pattern for future efforts not using a fat Quarter . I have lots of fabric to use up during the pandemic . 💞🦠🦠🦠🦠
Hello, I do not have a printer or computer 😋 I use a tablet 😁 so with all the measurements for each piece of fabric to cut, works out just great for me 😁 so thank you 💙 have you also seen the 3D style fitted masks, they might be better for you has a Dentist or your staff 😁💕 Erica x
This is all so great! I'm having a terrible time trying to make the top of the cap pattern! I've cut everything out but I'm stuck! Is it possible for you to include the pattern you cut out in the download please?
Renie this is my question as well. I just cut out what I thought was a good "A" piece and I too got stuck as my piece didn't go all the way around. I don't know what the heck I'm doing on this part. I am going to try to figure it out by perhaps cutting the pattern in half and see if I can do it like that. I'm just so glad that it's a fat quarter and that makes me feel like I'm not wasting material. Just would like like to get it right. My first cap is a mess.
Renie Ashbaugh if you are having trouble with the top cap piece, just cut an oval - start in the middle when sewing and if the pieces don’t meet in the back, it’s no big deal really- the binding tape will cover everything up
You don't need a bias tape maker - you just fold 1/4 inch in towards the middle and press the fabric and then repeat on the the other side. It's just a little more fiddly
Could you please tell me the length and width of "A"? I used quadrill paper to measure and cut out, but it was too long for part B to match up. Thank you so much and I really want to make some of these for my granddaughter who is a nurse and must wear a cap.
Hello Miss. Southern Hospitality.....love ur accent. As the south is very soothing, lived in Mississippi for a while, but had to get out of there...Cali-girl. Any who, thank you so much for sharing your pattern. I made a few for a couple of nurses I know. With the matching mask. Got an order for more other nurses have liked them( I'm excited). I like your pattern because it's small and not bucky in he back. Where did you get the bias tape, fold thingy for, that would save my fingers. Thanks again Miss Southern
I just made my own pattern- I sew 2 layers right sides together (one of the 100% cotton and one flannel) and leave a 2 inch opening on the long side. Flip it inside out and sew around the edges. Iron 2 pleats on each side and sew down. I use a 7 inch piece of 1/8 inch elastic on each side.
I must have a big head! Lol I followed your directions and there is no way it fits the top of my head let alone come down to my ears. I will modify your pattern and see what I come up with.
Hi, I made your pattern yesterday it was easy to follow and sew. Loved the French seam idea for the cap top! I did have a problem fitting the cap top to the band I tried attaching it several times but the point kept come out about 3/4 of an inch past the end of the band. I could not get it to fit so ended up cutting the material down so it would fit. I was wondering if you might have and thoughts on why this happened? The cap seems too small probable because of trimming it down. I'm wondering if how I drew the rounded-off corners may have made it too long. I'm wondering if you might have any suggestions as to why the top ended up too long? I doubled checked the piece of material I cut and it was 6" x 9" so I can't figure out the problem?
Patricia Johnson sometimes bar happens to mine also if my fabric is 21 inches- next time, don’t start at the point, start sewing about 1 inch away from the point and it will end up even on the other side- then you can hide the shortage on the back with the binding- it will work out fine
Podrias hacer este video en español para los q somos de ptro pais yo soy de nicaragua. Y me gustaria ver y escuchar este video en español.por favor gracias.😌🙏
hi i love that you used a fat quarters because of the scrub caps needs a lot of cloth but anyway you are amazing.... i would like to know how you made your piece A cap if you have a pattern or draw it already please share it with us and thank you so much for sharing. Josette
Great video! I cannot find the “down arrow” to get the printed pattern. Would it be possible for you to e-mail the piece A pattern and a copy of the pattern. Thank you! I will make them for my daughter’s dental office.
Hi Dr. Stephanie! I love your videos.. they are very easy to follow. I used your pattern for the headband too! 🙃 I do have a question, where would you sew the button on the surgical cap? Is there an average? Like your headband button is 1.5inches from bottom of fabric. Thank you so much!
Steph, thank you for this tutorial and for sharing your pattern with us. I am having a difficult time getting the cap top shaped properly. I always end up with about 3/8 to 1/2 inch left at the point without the piece b meeting the ends. I have made 3 or 4 templates and still cannot get the shape right so the ends of the cap front meet the point of the cap top. Help??? Thanks, Sharon
Thank you for this video- I am not able to find your pattern or instructions- there is no description from what I see - lots of comments- RDH here and these are much more fun than the paper ones! Thank you!
Hi Steph, I measured and remeasured my pieces A and B. Piece B is too short when I pin together. I tried to pin rather than stitch and it’s short, any suggestions? B is 22 “ long and A is 6x9. Great video but does it not work if you pin it?

sullivansteph . Super excited to have completed 2 scrub caps for my friends , a husband and wife working in ICU . I figured it all out easily and now have made a paper pattern for future efforts not using a fat Quarter . I have lots of fabric to use up during the pandemic . 💞🦠🦠🦠🦠
This is brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Will this still work with a 18”x21” fat quarter? I can’t find the bigger size. Thank you for your great tutorial
Yes, it will still work☺️
Love the dog.
Can you make one for a ponytail cap?! :D I have to put my hair in a bun and can't have it showing because I work in the OR.
Awesome video!
I knew how to make this already. I just came to see the doggiel 😆
Thanks for your time to make this pattern. It looks simpler than the other ones I found. I can’t find the pattern.
Thank you for your comment- the pattern link is in the description under the video. 😀
Awesome job! Thank you so much!!
Renie Ashbaugh if you are having trouble with the top cap piece, just cut an oval - start in the middle when sewing and if the pieces don’t meet in the back, it’s no big deal really- the binding tape will cover everything up
Yes I agree but again not everyone has a bias tape maker I do like the pattern thanks for the reply
Will this still work if my fat quarters are 18x21??
Which mask pattern are you using for the 6x9 piece?
I just made my own pattern- I sew 2 layers right sides together (one of the 100% cotton and one flannel) and leave a 2 inch opening on the long side. Flip it inside out and sew around the edges. Iron 2 pleats on each side and sew down. I use a 7 inch piece of 1/8 inch elastic on each side.
Is there any way you could make a paper pattern for the A piece.
Love this! I am making one now. Just wondering if you have a tutorial on the mask?
I must have a big head! Lol I followed your directions and there is no way it fits the top of my head let alone come down to my ears. I will modify your pattern and see what I come up with.
Do you have your ponytail on top of your head? If so, the cap won’t fit- make the ponytail low and it will fit.
Great pattern for my bald head. Just one note. 6x9 is a rectangle not a square.
Josette
Hello! If you will send me your email address I will be happy to send you the pattern for Piece A😊
Can you please tell me the size of the bias maker and where you got it?
Great video! I cannot find the “down arrow” to get the printed pattern. Would it be possible for you to e-mail the piece A pattern and a copy of the pattern. Thank you! I will make them for my daughter’s dental office.
Sandra Ambrose send me your email and I will email you piece A
The arrow is a small arrow on the right side in the description area
Hi Dr. Stephanie! I love your videos.. they are very easy to follow. I used your pattern for the headband too! 🙃 I do have a question, where would you sew the button on the surgical cap? Is there an average? Like your headband button is 1.5inches from bottom of fabric. Thank you so much!
ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ Beary I usually just out the cap on my own head and mark right at my ears with a marking pen and place the button there
Thank you so much!!! ❤
Which piece of the pattern is the black fabric from the video., if you are using a second coordinating fabric. Thank you.
S Diane Burke the black fabric would be the 3 1/2 inch pieces
sullivansteph thank u. I cut mine 8.5” to make the coordinating band bigger-deeper on my forehead. Love it!
Thank you for the details of fabrics. Wish the audio quality is better. It sounds so far away.
Gladys Ma thank you! I’m not sure why the audio sounds bad for you- I’ve had one other person say that as well
Steph, thank you for this tutorial and for sharing your pattern with us.
Hello! Send me your email address and i will email you the template for the top of the cap 😀
Also, if the ends don’t match up exactly, it’s no big deal, just cut off the excess and cover over it with the bias piece
@@sullivansteph fsluedeman@yahoo.com Thank you
It’s good but u didn’t say what piece you are picking up by the letters.
Thank you for this video- I am not able to find your pattern or instructions- there is no description from what I see - lots of comments-
RDH here and these are much more fun than the paper ones!
Thank you!
tracey florio the pattern is in the drop down menu- tap the down arrow and it should pull up a link😄
Loved the tutorial. Thanks
Hi Steph, I measured and remeasured my pieces A and B. Piece B is too short when I pin together. I tried to pin rather than stitch and it’s short, any suggestions? B is 22 “ long and A is 6x9. Great video but does it not work if you pin it?
Laurie S14 sometimes mine ends up being short too, but it won’t matter when you cover it up with the binding tape- it will still work
sullivansteph Thank you!
Good tutorial but the audio is a bit low. Thanks
