  • Hi guys, I'm Eileen. So it looks like I haven't bought any designer bags in nearly 3 years (remember I used to do handbag unboxing videos? 🙈). In this video, I shared why I stopped buying designer bags. At the moment, I feel really content with my current collection. If you've watched my decluttering/downsizing videos, you'd probably think I'm on the way to declutter all my designer bags. Well so far, I have no intention of selling all my handbags :-) As a luxury minimalist, I really enjoy and admire designer bags, but I also believe in making every purchase with intention. This video is meant to share the reasons I've managed to stay consistent with my low-buy. Luxury minimalism has changed my life and I hope you will join me on this journey xx

Hi! You definitely grow out of handbag obsession, I know I did. I sold almost all of my LV pieces, with the exception of a few that have true sentimental value to them. I sold all of my Chanel bags as well along with other designer handbags. I can say that I don’t miss not even one!! I have my mid designer bags that I love and I’m beyond happy with them. I refuse to ever become that high level consumer again.

I have slowed way down on my purchases after watching your videos for at least 6 months now. I find that I am more appreciative of what I buy and get more pleasure if I carefully choose what I truly want instead of just impulse buying and then not really caring about an item later on. There will always be lots of nice things to want, but I want to really care about what I bring home and I really hate too much clutter and too many choices. It gets overwhelming and kind of frustrating when I have too much. That takes the pleasure out of having nice things. Your videos have been tremendously helpful in assisting me with thinking things through before I spend. Also, I feel a lot less guilt because I'm not making mistakes and buying things on a whim.

I remember first stumbling across the makeup channels on YT. First I was so shocked that people have entire rooms dedicated to just makeup, but I slowly became engrossed in the subject. Eventually the constant releases, collections and reviews became boring. I moved on to skin-care channels and the same thing happened. Then handbag channels and, yep, the same thing happened. I learned a huge amount about all of those subjects, but there comes a point when it becomes repetitive and excessive. I still enjoy all of this, but I've figured out what works for me - I like what I like, and I'm not obsessed about anything in particular.

The luxury handbag phase I went through was definitely a “TH-cam made me do it” moment, LOL. It was also a difficult time in my life and luxury shopping was a distraction for me. So, I am definitely over it. Sold it all. BTW I noticed in your last video you mentioned that your former content (unboxing, etc) got more attention. Reading the comments now, though, it has to feel good that your content is making a real difference in people’s lives and helping people! Anyone can open a box. You think of creative and new ways to share your message week after week. Bravo!

Honestly, it's refreshing to see someone on social media who is NOT buying something new every five minutes. I have to say, I really appreciate your perspectives, the experiences you've shared, and I look forward to your videos. I know social media has driven the buying frenzy of luxury everywhere, but it has not really influenced my purchasing since I didn't start using Instagram until a couple of years ago (I'm old - lol) Although I've been buying luxury since the late 1970s, some of it was/is preowned. That's not to say that I haven't made mistakes, overbought, purchased items (clothing/bags/accessories) and later regretted or asked "Why the heck did I buy this?" My closets were full of such mistakes as there was a time when I also used shopping as an outlet :( Alas, no longer as I'm in a better place now and similar to where you are. I have spent the past few years clearing things out, in fact. I have also not bought any bags since 2019, and honestly, I am fine with that. In all, I have about 20 bags now in my collection, all of which are high quality, and I am happy and content with what I have. Do I get tempted sometimes? Sure. I occasionally run across something in a magazine or online or see someone wearing that I admire, but in the end, I just say No, and don't pull the trigger. I did buy some loafers from Tod's to wear to work since my old ones were worn out and beyond repair. LOL Otherwise, I'm just saving my money, practicing gratitude and enjoying the things I have. My focus now is maintaining my health and well-being more than anything else. All this crazy conspicuous consumption plastered all over social media is just utterly obscene given the things going on in the world anymore and a huge turnoff.

I’ve just lost interest in luxury. Everything looks the same to me these days that I haven’t bother to keep up with what’s new. The price increases just turned me off. I feel like there is better things I can do with my money. My kids are getting older and I think I rather help them with their future. Instead of $10k for a bag I rather spend it on helping my kids get a car so they can get around independently for work and school. Plus it’s not like I don’t already have plenty of bags and luxury jewelry. I don’t know. Maybe because I’m in my middle age phase so these things aren’t important to me anymore.

I've gotten more on board with intentional shopping after realizing how difficult it is to manage things once you have them. Selling bags is tedious and for vast majority of brands/styles its a money loss. I have to have a Birkin 30 before taking a buying break :-) But saving for the Birkin made me realize what is worth the money to me. And intentional shopping gives me gift of time to be doing other things!

It is so easy to get tempted to want things that others have. Especially if we are constantly seeing things unboxed on TH-cam. I took a break from watching videos and focused on career and it has really given me some perspective. I do miss watching certain influencers because they are really cool people. I still love fashion but I realized I can admire things without putting them on a wishlist and trying to acquire them. I also realize that many people in the luxury TH-cam community are collectors and it is a hobby they enjoy and that is great but I am not a collector. I have limited funds and I don’t want to go into debt or sacrifice other things like self care to buy lux items especially with the continued price increases. I can still treat myself to something on my wishlist for my birthday but it would have to be something within my budget and no impulse buys. ♥

I used to be the mindful shopper who would never spend money on designer bags. But just over a week ago, I placed and won a bid on a Mulberry bag. And before the bag even reached my overseas shipping address, I was already eyeing the same model in a different colour and considering whether to get it. 🤦‍♀️ all I can say is, I attribute this current craziness to a multitude of factors, chief among which is that I'm trying to improve certain circumstances in my life right now, and that those bags are a symbol of what I hoped will be my desired outcome.

You have definitely helped a lot of us to become more mindful with our purchases! I bought a new bag just recently though but it was to fill a gap in my closet. Whenever I feel tempted, I’d ask myself if I have a similar one in my closet and if I already used my current ones well enough for them to be replaced.
We all get tempted but sometimes we can actually just appreciate from afar (we don’t need to actually own it!)
Plus I always keep in mind that what works for others might not necessarily work for me
I’d love to know what (and how many!) bags are left in your closet now! Hope you can make an updated bag collection? I’m always challenging myself to have fewer bags..I have only 15 now! (From almost 30!)

I think I might have seen you before maybe when you were doing the unboxings but the content you’re creating now is really gripping me! I don’t have any pieces yet but I’m really passionate about the topic and I have a list of what I want. And what I love most is finding meaning in the topic of luxury items and hearing how other people get meaning from what they have even from a small number of items and why they chose what they chose, what they use the most, how they make them feel etc. And I’m loving every single video! Hi Eileen,
I’m with you on this topic. Not only am I at peace with my bag collection, being intentional with my purchases has helped me stay grounded.
Earlier this year, I have every intention to add a VCA holiday pendant to my collection. As the day approaching, my SA has reached out…and I realised I no longer fancied it, and would rather keep that money for investment.
You see, once we make a habit of living intentionally, it becomes our second nature…we don’t get too excited with shiny new things…
I still very much enjoyed my jewellery, bags, clothes, but now chose to shop within my closet.
With everything opens up again, we were able to go out more. I didn’t find the need to buy new things for the occasion…yet still look very well put together.
Your channel has inspired many. Don’t be discouraged by few negative comments. You do you Eileen. Stay true to yourself 🌹
As for me…I have reached & stayed in my Zen zone…will now move on to my next phase…financially independent…it might be sooner than I anticipated 🤞✌️

I have not gone to the way where i bought a few Chanel's handbags in a year but your video definitely a wake up call. Yes, i do love luxury handbags, jewelry but am really mindful of what i purchased. Yes definitely adding a stocks that can grow the investment is surely better than a handbag. As much i hope to have a piece of Hermes handbag, be it Berkin or Kelly but i really hate the rules of buying other stuff before being offered. Not building any of my purchase history but if i have it, perhaps if i am in Paris and get one. I am a happy of my small handbags collection of LV, Chanel and YSL but am really careful of adding more. Thanks for sharing.

Instead of buying more things, I started decluttering and only keeping what I really like and use. Getting rid of stuff I bought for my "fantasy self" allowed some serious reflection on what not to buy again. Having less makes dressing up process so much easier and more creative. I still crave "fantasy self" items, but choose inexpensive second hand options.

I’ve adopted a luxury minimalist lifestyle as well. I stick to classic pieces in my wardrobe and it has caused me to shop less than before. I’ve reduced the amount of skincare and makeup products I purchase too. I realized I bought stuff just to try what’s new and most of it would expire. Now I’ve invested in what’s best for my skin and overall look. Instead of trying the latest Sephora launch I go to my dermatologist and get what’s best for my skin health. I was shocked to see how much of my former products were unnecessary and now I use Derm recommended Drugstore products and a prescription retinoid. My skin has never been better.

Hi Eileen! Youate such an inspiration for me! Because of you, I am literally decluttering my closet with things that doesn't make sense to me anymore. Mostly things i don't wear anymore or bags that have been stuck in my closet. I love the idea of luxury minimalist because of what it comes with it. After watching a documentary about fast fashion and cheap buys, i have even more reason to buy things with a purpose. I only have two designer bags. Of course I have a small list of things that I would like to have because is classic and i see as an investment. Your comment about living in the city and it's temptations, i agree 💯 with you. I just came back from New York city with temptations everywhere! I own the same watch for 10 years! It's a MK one that I love very much but is oversized and it does not match with some jewelries i have,, but this last trip to NYC I bought a Rolex. It was not brand new, it was from a famous consignment store that I think it was a great deal. It will match my wedding ring and bracelets I own. I do live in the suburbs in Philadelphia. Thank you for this chanel! I am always here and on your IG ;)

The way that lv, chanel and others have doubled or even trippled their prices during the last 5-10 years is just crazy in my opinion because the quality of the products didn't increase at all. That is why I took a step back from buying luxury items. If there is anything that I really want for a long time and the item is high quality and timeless, I will still consider saving some money for it. But I will check the pre-loved market first.

I love your videos. I have not slowed down my bag purchases BUT I only started buying a few years ago and only ever have bought 1-2 bags per year. I haven't ever bought anything like Chanel or Hermes because they are just too expensive. LV and Dior you can often find secondhand at reasonable prices, and new I have a few from Lanvin and Loewe, which are very good quality and have unique styles often in fun colors (I am not at all a "classic bag" person and am more a "what is THAT" person in terms of bag style). If the prices increase beyond what I am willing to pay, I will reduce to even less than that or just be happy with what I already have. But I am also not a changing-handbags person and just carry one at a time and as recently as four years ago would carry the same one for 2-3 years. Now I carry the same one for 6 months to a year but have a few old ones I keep in my closet to change out with for a few days occasionally. I doubt I will ever be the sort of handbag lover who has a different bag for every outfit, so that really keeps my buying in check. Even if I love a bag, I know I will simply not wear it every day if I already like the one I'm using!

Apart from where you live and work, your kids’ school also puts pressure on one’s spending on clothings and cars. My kid goes to a private school. A private school event is like a handbag, car and Jewellery show. Some moms really look down on you and do not talk to you if you do not carry the most luxurious handbag or drive a luxury make of car.
At first, I felt the pressure of social comparison. However, the more I know them, I realize that they are nowhere financially stronger than me. They have expensive taste and high consumption habits. On the other hand, my husband and I are the millionaire next door (those who doesn’t look but are actually wealthy). We live below our means and save as much as we can. So I told myself I should ignore what others consume or use, and more importantly, how they view us. I do own a small collection of handbags and Jewellery I truly like.

@@ColourfulNoir Yes. That would be one of the most challenging parts in parenting.
I have a friend who is a “millionaire next door” type, even more frugal and wealthy. He sent his only kid to a more down-to-earth private school for the good education. Even though it is a not a too expensive private school, there are some rich kids (though in minority). His kid is in puberty so keeps asking him why their apartment (we are in hk) is so small, why they don’t have a car, if they are really poor, etc.
My friend is not a billionaire for sure. But he has a higher than average net-worth thanks to his early investment and frugality. His kid doesn’t know it.
Parenting is hard. It’s even harder in this technological advance worth where the price tag of everything can be googled at the tip of our fingers. And Your kid may get in your way to financial freedom. Let’s work hard on that, too. 😊

Honestly, similarly to you, I find the newer luxury handbags incredibly underwhelming and feel so uninspired when I go to luxury department stores. Now that I’ve found places that produce real leather luxury handbag dupes (no designer labels etc) for a fraction of the price, I no longer have desire to buy into luxury brand names. I feel similarly about perfumes now that I’ve discovered online boutiques that sell oil versions of well known luxury fragrances.

I absolutely love your videos and am asking this with the most respectful and kind intentions :) I’ve seen so many TH-camrs (latest KatL) reach purse peace after getting their Birkin and Kelly. Nothing else seems to attract them and they sell off their other bags and don’t have a desire to buy more. BKC isn’t in my budget, but after getting my entry level Hermes bags in etoupe and gold, I’ve had almost no desire to buy more bags. So i guess I’m wondering, if you didn’t have the BK and chanel classic flap already, would you feel the same way? There are almost no other bags to attain that are “higher” than the BK/chanel classic flap. TH-camrs like Chase Amie or Sophie Shohet continue to buy a variety of bags, but they’re not into Hermes. So i wonder if it’s an Hermes thing as well :) Again, I love your videos and am just sharing my thoughts with the most kind intention. I could be absolutely wrong! Keep making your wonderful videos!

I think it's a valid point in a way, although I don't think it's entirely the reason I stopped buying. Before I came across minimalism, I was interested in MANY Hermes bags- constance, kelly pochette, mini kelly, kelly retourne 25 and the list goes on. My SA even said she would work on getting me all the bags on my wish list (of course it had something to do with my obsession with their fine jewellery as well at that point). So I think if I hadn't learnt about minimalism, I really would have just kept going, thinking I had achieved something by acquiring all the hard-to-get handbags xx

At the end of the day, there's 2 kinds of bags I would buy. Bags I would used very often such as my Mcm fanny pack and Chanel camera bag which I love using practically every weekend and some designer bags that I love it for its design, craftsmanship and don't mind putting it on display to admire it cos I don't have a lifestyle to use it. Such as my Fendi pearl peekaboo. I think just indulge it in a single digit and at an affordable size. I have only 7 designer bags n I'm happy with what I have. 😃

I recently traveled to Denmark via London, and shopped. UK no longer offers tax refund to foreign buyers, and prices of LV bags are lower than those in US but higher than those in European countries. Prices of Chanel classic flap bags are almost the same in US, UK, and European countries. They are outrageously high. European countries are the best places so far to buy LV for people from US. I guess LV has a very strong market in US where they can raise their prices more aggressively than they do in UK and European countries.

❤ My price range has always been in the Coach/Kate Spade/Dooney/Micheal Kors area. I recently went to the outlets near our home to find a new black bag. I had paired down to only one handbag and found it to be a mistake. I don’t think it goes with everything I wear & I have realized it’s a bit too big. So I regrouped and decided I may need 3-5 bags for my collection so I don’t wear out one. I noticed Coach raised their prices and the quality of my current bag has changed. I’ve noticed that the inside flap is a different fabric. Sooooooo…I went to a store I have never stopped in. Tory Burch-and I found a very well made saffiano leather crossbody that is really well made. The inside flap is leather and the hardware is minimal. The inside zipper is weighty and the fabric inside looks and feels very thick. 🤔 I’m going to go back and hopefully find other styles that will work with my wardrobe. I see creating content as a way to document my journey. I wouldn’t say I’m anti luxury at all, I’m just looking at it from a different angle now. Certain people came here because of my unboxing videos so I can understand if the current content doesn’t feel relatable anymore, however what I convey in my videos are just some honest thoughts.I think luxury content can be very helpful but I just wish someone was there to tell me to stay grounded.

@@ColourfulNoir Yes you can give honest thoughts and advices, that’s fine. But if that’s gonna be the sole content of all your videos, it’s weird. It’s like a chef on a cooking channel keeps asking people to stop cooking and gives out honest advices on how you can eat out or how amazing food delivery is. Once or twice is fine, but if that’s gonna be the only content of the cooking channel, it just doesn’t feel right.

@@ColourfulNoir I came across your channel the other day (I’m sure I’ve seen your videos before) and I am IN LOVE with your channel.. I can’t stop watching or reading the comment sections for conversation. I love luxury because I love the idea of buying things for the long-term that feel special. I don’t have any pieces just yet but I have a lot on my list! Im passionate about it and what I love most in the meaning I get from the topic. And your channel is FULL of so much meaning and conversation and it feels so good to watch!! I have loved every video so far! Definitely don’t stop creating this content, it’s gold!! ❤️ I don’t know whether you’ll see this because it’s within a thread so I’ll also comment on your main video I think! ☺️✨
