So when it came to 17 and 18, he just called them androids for the sake of simplicity in labeling his projects, regardless of any technicality.

When it comes to the cyborg/android debate, it's complicated. Back in the day the original Japanese name of artificial human didn't have a good ring to it so it was changed to android for English. This was back in og dragon ball where they were androids so it made sense. Cut to Z, with 16, 19 and 20 who are also androids so that was fine. Then 17 and 18 came along, and we were supposed to assume they were just as mechanical until we find out they're not. So the doylist reason to keep calling them androids is because it was too late to change to a different naming scheme and the watsonian reason was because Dr Gero was such a sociopath that he didn't care that the two kids were cyborgs and folded them into the android program as just another step to perfection. I mean he took to calling himself Android 20 after his conversion so it has precedence. Dr Gero is a mean bastard.
In the English dub it is called the Kamehameha wave, but it's original name is just Kamehameha, because the "-ha" part translates to "wave" or "blast", and Kamehameha roughly translates to "Turtle's destructive wave"
To be fair, I believe the only reason Vegeta even still existed at this point was because Toriyama kept him around to use as a plot device. So defaulting to blaming him makes sense.

Ok so they're technically cyborgs but they were always called androids. The only REAL android in this saga is 16 because he's pure metal. Easy way to remember is Terminator = android. Robocop = Cyborg
They're actually called "Artificial Humans" in the manga and Japanese anime. Android was the American bastardization of their original term. They couldn't call then Cyborgs 17 and 18 because of the anime Cyborg 009 where the various Cyborg characters had numerical designations and would've risked a copyright lawsuit.
20 is Arguable, its a Human Brain in a full Mechanic Body, so technically a Cyborg but arguable Cell isn't named but he's a Bio-Android, an enhanced Lab Baby, i'm not sure if Android or Cyborg is more fitting seeing he's made out of living Cells and no Mechanical Parts

When I first watched back then close 25 years ago the way Cell consumed his victims i thought it was unreal. After years i saw a documentary where shows that ladybug do the same thing.
Something to point out is the reason that guy was holding money when he was slurped out of existence. In the actual series, he was begging Piccolo to save him, and Cell stabbed him in the middle of trying to bargain by offering money in exchange for his safety.

Well it's like this, they were given the name of android but they are not because they were once human with the names lapis and lazuly. So they are actually cyborgs since their humans with artificial limbs, and that's what makes them so strong.
Most red ribbon androids we see are actual full robots, like number two and eight from the OG and 16 and 19 from Z. But android 17 & 18 WERE just normal humans who got artificially enhanced by Gero while still maintaining most of their organic parts and functions. So technically are cyborgs. But since their powers are pretty similar to the other actual androids' l, they are called android to not differentiate.

Now that I think about it, the only true Cyborg is Gero himself as C20. 16 and 19 are purely Synthetic, as was Eighter, and the rest are all noncanon for now.

Ok so they're technically cyborgs but they were always called androids. The only REAL android in this saga is 16 because he's pure metal. Easy way to remember is Terminator = android. Robocop = Cyborg

They're actually called "Artificial Humans" in the manga and Japanese anime. Android was the American bastardization of their original term. They couldn't call then Cyborgs 17 and 18 because of the anime Cyborg 009 where the various Cyborg characters had numerical designations and would've risked a copyright lawsuit.

An Android is basically a robot that is made to look and act like a human being with some representations taking liberties in giving them emotions. On the other hand, a cyborg is a living organism that has robotic or mechanical parts meant to extend their capabilities.

Dr. Gero started with actual androids (they were robots designed to look human). The first one we met was Android #9 from OG Dragon Ball. So I think it's fine for Dr. Gero to stick with the same nomenclature.
I think the funniest thing about Picollo fusing with Neil and Kami is that they are so useless. You'd think that having 2 people inside of you would bring some other abilities or having more sensory capabilities, but no. They are just in there to troll Picollo.
Not sure how it's really useless though. At this point, piccolo is the second most powerful fighter on earth (first being android 16). Only because of this he was able to handle 17 for as long as possible. Ofcourse he's overtaken by others later after using the hyperbolic time chamber. Also remember that Piccolo was able to go up against frieza only because of Nail's power. Nail and Kami's sacrifices were far from useless.

Well it's like this, they were given the name of android but they are not because they were once human with the names lapis and lazuly. So they are actually cyborgs since their humans with artificial limbs, and that's what makes them so strong.
Most red ribbon androids we see are actual full robots, like number two and eight from the OG and 16 and 19 from Z. But android 17 & 18 WERE just normal humans who got artificially enhanced by Gero while still maintaining most of their organic parts and functions. So technically are cyborgs. But since their powers are pretty similar to the other actual androids' l, they are called android to not differentiate.

17 and 18 are called androids in some versions of the story, but by the definition of both android and cyborg, they are technically cyborgs. An android is fully robotic with a humanoid appearance, a cyborg is a human modified with robotic parts. 17 and 18 are human beings born naturally, just modified with robotic parts.
In the show they called them Androids but semantically they're technically Cyborgs, that's the joke TFS was running with.
17/18 are Cyborgs since they are bio-mechanical, but are called "androids" in cannon because "reasons".

They're actually cyborgs by definition, but official Funimation English dub uses the term "Android" even if it's *technically* wrong, because it's a direct translation of "Jinzoningen," which means "artificial human."

1. Cyborg: Cyborgs are organisms/lifeforms (such as humans) modified with robotic or cybernetic parts. Cyborgs include 17, 18, and Dr. Gero himself as 20. TeamFourStar parody gave them normal human-like voices.
2. Android: Humanoid robots (robots made to look human) such as Android 16 and 19. TeamFourStar parody gave them robotic voices. Basically, human cyborgs and androids are opposites.
3. Bio-Android: Bio-engineered artificial lifeforms such as Cell (a.k.a. Android 21 before we had an actual Android 21 in a video game).
All of Dr. Gero's creations are referred to as "Androids" in the anime and pretty much every other media since OG Dragon Ball, that includes 17 and 18 even though they are more like cyborgs since they were later explained as being human once, although that was from a minor retcon in the Buu Arc to explain how 18 was able to have a daughter with Krillin...

The whole cyborg/android thing really depends on whether you watched DBZ the first time subbed (cyborg) or dubbed (android).
I heard in Japan only 17 and 18 are called Cyborgs, the rest are androids
And funnily enough, both is kinda right and wrong since 17,18 and 20 are cyborgs, but 16 and 19 are anroids. The original just calls them "Number #" instead of android or cyborg.
@@taiman2152 it's a bit iffy on who is and isn't a Cyborg. Technically, 17 and 18 aren't even Cyborgs. They don't actually have ANY mechanical parts, other than the bombs which were removed, and their emergency deactivators, which are effectively inert. They're more so Modified Humans, as their bodies have been amplified with bio-organic parts entirely. But still, not robotic, thus, not Cyborgs, Gero just calls them that, and it's just the Norm now.
Now that I think about it, the only true Cyborg is Gero himself as C20. 16 and 19 are purely Synthetic, as was Eighter, and the rest are all noncanon for now.

Piccolo has always been a Gigachad. He is just SUCH a gigachad that he let's the others take the spotlight while doing the work that nobody else wants to do but he knows needs to be done.
Also, yes, the English Dub calls them Androids 17 and 18, but they are humans that were modified, technically Cyborgs. The Japanese version calls them Jinzoningen which basically means like fake human I think.

the correct answer is that the show, the manga, and all the games called them androids but the correct robot terminology for 17, 18, and 20 specifically is cyborg since they're modified humans and not full on robots like 1 through 16, and 19, the non canonical android 21 is also a cyborg, though I think DBZ Kakarot has technically made at least her human base canon after the fact with Vomi appearing as "Researcher" in Capsule Corp after you unlock the training room
