    I have the same engine on my 14ft crestliner Commadore Speedster. Runs great, incredibly quiet for the era. Got mine for free but I had to replace the crank and seals, luckily I had an evinrude 33hp parts engine with a perfect crank. Great video man, keep up the good work, love old outboards. Subscribed👍🏻

      These are indeed excellent motors. You have a great boat to put it on too. I could have had this motor for free also, but I felt bad about taking it for nothing so I offered a nominal donation in exchange for it. It turned out great and I'm so glad I made room for it at the last minute that day. Thanks for watching!

      Old JohnnyRude I would’ve gladly offered some cash to the previous owner had I not had to split the case. Typical story for these old motors, hadn’t been run in 15 years. I expected to find bad points or coils like always. Well worth the time and effort for the partial rebuild. Rings looked good so I reused them, 135 psi on each cylinder. Find something that lasts like that now days. Pushes my little boat to 30mph when the conditions are right, it’s an absolute blast to drive around. Gets lots of attention. I’d like to find an older 50’s era boat, can’t beat those lines. I’ve yammered on enough...lol! Have a great day and enjoy the water my friend.

      @@xpslinger8171 I didn't have to split the case on this one. I will have to take the gearcase apart at the end of the season to fin a leaking shift rod O-ring and I had to take the cylinder head off to defoul the pistons. Other than that, jut typical tune up stuff, replacement of the fuel pump amd sealing up the outer exhaust housing shroud where i had an exhaust leak. That got me where I am today with it. I saw 31mph with this rig once under the right conditions. It is a 28-29mph boat under normal conditions amd it is a blast to run.

      Old JohnnyRude Does yours put out a slight steam trail? Mine does, but doesn’t act like it’s running hot, pumps water very well. Can run WOT for 5 miles and tune is still perfect. I’ve read that these particular motors are known for it but I’m curious if yours does the same thing. I have the quiet exhaust housing on mine.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@xpslinger8171 Yes it does. It is normal for these Super Quiet motors. It is a function of how the cooling system works and not an indication of any problems.

      Thank you! This one does seem to run very well. It idles superbly and seems to run with very good power. I can't wait to get on the lake with it. Thanks for watching!

    In your experience, have you replaced the rubber mounts on these engines?
    I’ve always just ran them as I found them but I’ve always wondered if new mounts were needed.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have only replaced the mounts that I have found to be broken, which has happened from time to time. I do not replace them just to replace them, though. Most times they hold up quite well. Thanks for watching!

    Nice job! Just finished mine, it's a 1960 starts and sounds the same. Did you use the point gap tool and ohm meter to set the points?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Be careful with the 1960 40hp. Make sure the flywheel is properly torqued. I don't remember the exact torque value, but it is over 100 ft-lbs. (115 ft-lbs maybe?) The 1960 and 1961 40hp uses the same crankshaft as the 35hp. At wide open throttle if it spins at the top end of the RPM range it can cause fretting of material between the flywheel hub and the crankshaft taper. When they run well, they do run well.
      I do not have a timing tool for the large crankshaft (1962-up) 40hp so I set mine with a feelers gauge on this motor. Thanks for watching!

    I can’t find anything on this but found your video. Did they make these with column steering and if so how does it get out on?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      By column steering, do you mean steering by a wheel at a remote control deck? If that is what you mean, that is what I have here. If you mean by a tiller, yes, that can also be done with a handful of parts. They made the motors both ways. Thus one was a factory remote steering motor with electric start and choke and the throttle position indicator/lever instead of the tiller handle. If you're asking about how to install the remote motor and steering controls in the boat, that's a bit of a different subject. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    Do you have a video of the repairs on this motor? I just received a 1963 big twin 40 40352D and not getting any spark and trying to figure out how to hook up the starter. New to repairing outboards. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not have a video of repairs on this motor. I do have a whole series of tune up service on classic OMCs on this channel. The procedure is the same on this 40hpas it is on the 18hp. As for the starter, there is a separate junction box that mounts inside the boat with the starter solenoid inside. The ignition switch, battery, and starter cables all connect inside there and it has fused connections. Thanks for watching.

    I am currently getting one of these running. How do I determine if the water pump is functioning properly? My 35 HP Mercury has a weep hole, can't seem to find anything on this motor.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should get a good spray of water coming from the exhaust relief right below the powerhead on the back of the leg. It won't spray much until.the thermostat opens up. When that opens it sprays pretty heavy until it closes again. Some steam from there us normal.ince it is running at temperature. There is no telltale stream on these motors. Thanks for watching!

      @@oldjohnnyrude8404 Thanks!
      Had the motor running but shut it down when I didn't see much water from the port you pointed out. Pulled the lower unit and the pump looks OK.
      Will run it a little longer and see what happens.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mtk51 it usually takes 30-60 seconds for full flow to start from a cold start. Even a warm start will take 10-15 seconds for flow to start at the relief port. If water does not start after 90 seconds or so, you may want to shut it down and check the temperature of the powerhead.

    I have the same motor and I can not get it to fire it has gas to the carb and spark at the sparkplug???

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like the fuel is not getting into the cylinders from the carb. Are your spark plugs wet when you pull them out after trying to start the engine?

    Where is the pee hole on this motor?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no tell tale stream on these motors like you see on most every outboard made today. There is ab exhaust relief hole which water will spray out of when the thermostat is open. That hole is on the back of the leg between the powerhead and the water line. Thanks for watching!
