WILL THIS 100+ YEAR OLD Boat Motor Run After 30+ YEARS IN PIECES?

  • Definitely something you don't see everyday in the Midwest. this behemoth of an engine was made to go inside the hull of a boat and was one of the largest inboard boat engines gray made at the time. in Iowa we don't see very many of these since we dont have much for water around us but this one made it here somehow!
    Hope you enjoy!

    Oil blowing by the rings causing the smoke?

    • @cruddycornstalks
      @cruddycornstalks  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +58

      it is a two stroke it burns oil with the gas for lubrication. this is the earliest era of doing so so they where designed to run 16:1 two stroke mix using 30wt oil. so they smoke just a wee bit.

    • @cruddycornstalks
      @cruddycornstalks  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      @neo-TH-camStoleMyHandle no spring left to them so they don't press against the cylinder wall. I even ended up unrolling one until it was flat and it never broke that's how soft and hot they had gotten

    • @cruddycornstalks

      .@neo-TH-camStoleMyHandle I thought this was on another video my bad. this engine is a two stroke and has almost perfect compression. no amount of seating or working will make it not smoke its just how two stroke engines work.

    My old landlord hated all things two-stroke. He'd say they were junk, didn't last or that they had to rev really high to work at all. This video proves what I told him. I reminded him of all the old marine two strokes and outboards that lasted for decades and he declared that they were different somehow, hahaha. Most folks will probably never see a real two stroke idle this low so remember that they can. Diesel two-strokes don't count.

    Try using a left hand drill to remove the broken bolt. The drill grabs the remaining bolt and unscrews it

    You should build a replica of a old motorcycle, and put this engine on it. A custom resto mod, like the flying millyard!, Or some of the bikes built with aeroplane engine cylinders, a 5000 cc(+/-) v-twin seems one was over 5000cc single cylinder idled at 150-200 rpm and revved to 900 i think, could be wrong. At idle it hopped around. If I built one it would be an opposed twin, boxer for balance. Give it a 8" bore with 8" stroke and a kinda sleeve valve I been thinking of possibly. Having a ring on the outside of what would be considered the head. With a band covering the ports that use a labyrinth seal , a ring like the old rings , about 1/2" thick with a groove on the inside. That the top fit into a groove in the head
    The bottom fitting into a groove in the band. With wipers in grooves around the ports. With springs pushing them out. To seal on the band. The band then having a cover that slides on. With the intake and exhaust manifold in this part. It also having wipers around these ports. With about .010" clearance between the band and all other parts. It either having a groove with a pin attached to the band. Or a ring gear on the band and it spinning around the head with windows opening the ports when required. Using a bevel gear and ring gear to spin the band. The band fitting around the piston when at TDC. With the rings being .060"-.100" from being inside the head. The crown of the piston above the rings being about 1.35" above the ring. The ports being about 1" x 2.75" wide for the exhaust and 1.135 x 3.0" for intake and larger engine possibly having two of each. Maybe 1" x 2.25" two for the exhaust , with larger for intake times two, I doubt poppet valves would flow as much. With a oil squirter cooling the piston crown. Keep the outer diameter about .015"-.020" smaller to prevent seizing. With quench pads and shallow grooves to swirl the intake mixture, and help send the exhaust to the exhaust ports. With a small combustion chamber in the center of the piston shaped like a sphere. With a slight .100" deep in the center, 2" hemisphere in the head. With paths to the ports, with a large quench pad, or ring. The piston having a similar half swirl coming from the intake, with a slight path to the exhaust, only a
    .020":deep trench the width of the port roof. Or slightly smaller. And mirror polished to prevent carbon from sticking. A 6" + bore with 2" shallow hemisphere in the piston and head, with spark plug in the middle. Having around .015"-.020" between the piston and head when hot. Would be tight for a high rpm engine. With this engine never seeing 2400, possibly never seeing over 1400-1600 rpm. A 6" or 8" bore , veith 7"-9" stroke . The only thing keeping it sane would be it being a boxer! With two 38 mm carbs, on a intake manifold, with a 1" tube connecting each manifold. Possibly test a 1.75" and 2"tube. Possibly weld in a piece of sheet metal in the tube. Splitting the tube. Allowing the carb on one end feed the opposite cylinder, and vise versa. Maybe have a small valve to allow a direct shot to the cylinder. For high rpm power 😂, from 800-1200 rpm. With the long runner helping tq from 100- 200 rpm idle , with the two 50 lb flywheels the rear head having a cast in flange to bolt on a 4 speed transmission. Possibly a lawnmower gear set with dog rings welded on to allow a shift by only cutting ignition. The slam into the next gear. And rev match to down shift. 6 dogs at most. Possibly two with .050" backlash, maybe build a dog ring synchro that can be synchronized to shift or ignition cut without the clutch. The synchro having dogs with .005" backlash and catch in both directions, like dovetails , only the receiver being too large and the tail being too narrow. So the tail fits straight in about
    .005" and .015",once in. The synchro using carbon fiber friction material that can be replaced. The engine will maybe produce 30 HP, with tons of TQ. With a turbo per cylinder, pushing the 8:1 compression up with 20-22 psi with water methanol injection, and up to 28 psi boost. TQ should be in the 200lbft range minimum. And possibly 50-60;HP at 1600 rpm. It should produce turbo diesel like performance. And rev from idle to 1600 rpm maybe 1800 if the counterbalance crank can smooth out the heavy pistons. A 4 speed close ratio could allow 2 to 4 shifting normal driving, and 1,3,4 shift when on hills, and performance minded 1,2,3,4 shift or allow 4-3 shift to make turns abd such. A wide ratio would probably be faster doing 1,2,3,4 shifting, it should have the power to set off in 3-4 gear. Either 1 shift or no shift. Use a 7" rim and modern 200-240:rear tire. With something like a 120-140 on the front. Something like a sportster would have. A 17" rear and 20" front. Rim with large spokes, and few of them. Powder coating in a silver grey, with matching frame, with black engine with silver accents. A orange and silver tank with tan leather seat. Silver handlebars with black controls a small radiator mounted to the front head sticking through the frame in front with two 6" fans the heads having a bulge in the center with the sparkplug half recessed screwing in the middle protrusion at an angle about 45°-60° from the cylinder. 60-75 HP and 200-250+ TQ it could be interesting I don't think a cvt would work. Anyway, enough rambling , think about putting that thing on a old motorcycle! ✌️🕊️

    More like a clydesdale horse or twenty four of them pulling a ship up a river bank. Just awesome plus a giggle at your expense. Been there and done this kind of stuff a dang good many years ago. Just think of spending the night with a team of horses and pulling some barge up a river

    Like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, so relieved after sitting, rusting for so long.

    What’s the torque on this monster?

    it would be a neat thing to have in an open boat .Being a two stroke it must have plenty of torque and horse power.

    A really cool 2stroke engine! Perhaps a little bit to much 2 stroke oil!
