  • Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P. summarizes the Catholic Tradition's long studied concept of cooperation with evil. "Can you do a bad thing for a good reason?" "What if the ends justify the means?"

I have studied philosophy and I think this moral situation is much more complicated than this video shows. My moral instincts tell me we should be doing a LOT MORE than we are doing to hold these corporations accountable for their bad behavior. If Starbucks today came out against abortion, I guarantee you the leftists would be more passionate in boycotting them than we Catholics are!

Starbucks and other companies not only support abortion but sex change if there is such a thing surgeries, transgenderism. I guess that it is healthy to establish by reason the impact that we have on making businesses profitable that I have already declared their intent in involving themselves in moral evils. It is important also to know our degree off involvement just and I am glad that Fr. covers that also know that there are people that support Starbucks because of their intent so they are outlining their intent with Starbucks and willingly supporting them. In this way we can assess our own intentions and what we will. Some companies are part of huge huge conglomerates and so it is not evident or publicized their intentions. This means that it is not always easy To know what they’re gonna do with the money that we give them.

Also the most intimate relationship that Catholics have with abortion is contraception and if we fail to recognize that we are already contributing to going against the will of God when we justify contraception because God is the God of life and so He will life and contraception
goes directly against the will of God.

I don't feel like you answered the question. Can a Catholic buy from companies that support abortion? Take Starbucks for example. There are obviously many other places to get coffee or you could brew your own at home from coffee bought from Catholic Monks. Surely no Catholic is going to buy from Starbucks because they support abortion, but how sinful is laziness or complacency? Especially in the context of abortion.
I feel we should not only be boycotting companies that support abortion (that is the least we can do) but should be actively telling other people not to support them.

It’s almost impossible and can be stressful keeping tabs on all these companies just to avoid buying their products.
I avoided Gillette after their anti men campaign. But their parent company is Proctor and Gamble (who make almost every household product known to man) sure you could go with small independent companies for some stuff but for many it’s not affordable. Very similar to trying to avoid buying Chinese products. In some cases it’s not possible.
In regards to the obsession with “saving the Mother Earth”.
It’s very important to keep in mind that, no we don’t want to maliciously trash the gift of the earth that God gave us, but rather it’s not permanent and won’t last forever. We are not built for this world or this life. The goal is to focus on getting yourself and others to heaven. Not obsessing over being green which just leads many to worshiping the “Mother” Earth rather than God.

For example, my family stopped shopping at Target after the transgender restroom issue. Although we like Target because it is very close, we decided to shop at other stores to express our displeasure along with emails to Target executives. I stopped working in the film industry for a year because the morals didn’t fulfill the principle of the integral good (as Fr. After spiritual advice from my traditional pastor and good Thomistic priests like this one, I feel better about serving coffee and sandwiches and not formally cooperating to the evils of the movie industry. Thank you Fr Pine. You explained it beautifully. I agree with another commenter on this thread the Principle of the Integral Good by Fr Ripperger is also another great book to read on this sort of subject. But you explained it very well also. Thank you! To the people watching the video remember the God became man (the Second Person of the Trininty) and even though he lived perfectly and had perfect virtue as well as our Lady, they know the struggles that human beings face daily and how incredibly hard it is to overcome those sort of things in this life. The point is we cannot without the help of God and His grace. Now that does not mean we are not to strive for holiness in every area by trying as much as possible to avoid cooperation with evil. It will take discernment by every person to decide what is actually essential or necessity. Most of the things we believe, especially as Americans, may truly not be necessity. And those things that we think that are necessity and are not really necessity may be the things that we are cooperating with evil and may even be the things that are distracting us from living a life of holiness. One last thing, if you know that a certain company supports murder or any other sin that cries out to heaven for vengeance and they have a certain something that u want but not need, look around for someone else who may have it for maybe a more expensive price. It may take longer to aquire that item and take more work but your soul and conscience will be free from any doubt or scruples. You may even end up appreciating the good God has blessed you with and He also may be increasing you in the virtue of patience.

The example about the janitor is off. If the janitor didn’t know that PP killed babies, he’s golden.
    But if he did…
And his actions were essential to the operation of PP (they are),
Then he would be complicit with evil. God would will him to have faith and hold out for another job.

Father, your arguments completely break down in light of the sin of omission. We can not in good conscience actively or passively cooperate in evil acts no matter how remote or proximate they are without them negatively impacting us and others in some way. We almost always have the choice to say "no" by not purchasing the product and purchasing another from someone else or doing without. It takes work and a great deal of patience, perseverance, and discipleship but it can be done.
    In Christ,
    Andrew

If you listen again you will see his concern is not about the Slaughter of Innocence but about burning less fossil fuel and saving mama Gaia. This is the new Catholicism save the Earth. Burn fossil fuel then there is less fossil
fuel. A venial Sin Not co operating with burning less fossil fuel is a Mortal Sin you help destroy the ozone. He gives the website that tells you the best way to travel that uses less carbon footprints. 16:38 ...sometimes it will be permissible that you cooperate with an
      evil.
...We don't want to get completely enmeshed in the type of
activity which has us on the outskirts of evil city. Why not? Why types of activity gets a Christian on the outskirts of evil city ? Protesting the Slaughter of the Innocence ?
We as Christians want to be building up a culture
      (liberal buzzword) of life.
      Sometimes that will mean re-evaluating
institutions. Re-evaluating relationships. That might mean that it is time to begin, (dramatic deep breath here it comes) UNETHICALLY SOUND you know like biotech firms so that you can produce
x, y, or z products in accord with you know, healthy, safe, good. You
know like, morally coherent types of processes things like that.
Begin supporting UNETHICAL biotech firms you know like um J&J, Pfizer, Slaughtered Innocence vaccines. Or Moderna with the mRNA microchip vaccines. You know morally coherent. Unethical biotech firms making morally coherent healthy, safe, good products?
This is a well rehearsed script. The "you knows" and "ums" the deep breaths are part of his script.
Brands that Support Abortion. Can Catholics Still Buy? Is a cover to what he really wants to say. He puts burning fossil fuels on the same level of "Morally Wrong" as the Slaughter of the Innocence.
When he travels he uses the website that tells him which itinerary to take that uses the least amount of carbon footprint. So he can make a MORAL choice. His words. 9:25

The explanation was helpful overall, but I would suggest, going forward, to give clear examples that resonates with modern society. For example, watching movies or TV shows isn’t intrinsically evil. The intent to watch these shows on Netflix or Disney+ also is not intrinsically evil. However, if knowledge that these streaming services support intrinsically evil acts such as abortion or same sex indoctrination is thrown into the mix, that knowledge now produces a moral dilemma where Christians must make a choice whether or not to cooperate with evil to some degree. Reaching that conclusion is not difficult. It’s the many layers of cooperation that muddles the moral waters. The bottom line is, if you know a company willingly cooperates with evil and you say, “Oh well, I don’t care,” then you are willingly cooperating with evil. If you want a cup of coffee, and Starbucks is the ONLY place in town to get it, you’re not necessarily cooperating with evil because you don’t will it. It helps to have a list of companies, but it’s becoming more and more clear that eventually we will unwittingly and unwillingly cooperate in some form in today’s society. Stay vigilant.

    • @cscates3598

I disagree. Kroger is the 3rd largest grocery chain in USA and they will cover abortion costs. Walmart is working on a response which shows me that they will pay something. And of course all the Amazon stores fund it

@@kevinpankanin6222 well that's why you gotta go more local. Like for Texans, H-E-B has stayed out of woke economics

I’ve heard from workers at Winco that their name brand stuff is just repackaged by a brand they pay for. Not sure how accurate that it, but I thought it was interesting

Sadly doesn't work when you live in ultra-progressive west coast Canada....

Store brands don't resolve this, they just remove it by one step of ignorance. Private brands are merely repackaged products that may or may not have slight ingredient changes compared to the big brand manufacturers' product. While you don't neccesarily know who the manufacture is, you can have confidence that it is NOT your local grocer.
