  • Father Pine comes in with the most controversial take to hit the Pints channel in decades: That tattoo you're thinking about getting? Its probably not as great or exciting as you think its going to be.
Upon Fr. Pines methodical examination it seems like tattoos aren't as exciting and morally uncharged as they seem to be.

Thank you Fr. Pine, I really needed to hear this. I have tattoos that I got before my conversion, but I was thinking of getting the Chi-Rho symbol and a few other religious tattoos. Seeing this made me think why and what is my underlying motivation? I think I don't want it for selfish, narcissistic reasons, but rather to show the world what Christ and Catholicism mean to me. Rather than SHOW them, Christ commands me to TELL them. You're also right about wanting to tell the story of our life. I was thinking of also getting a tattoo of a dove with the year I was baptized in Roman numerals. I always want to remember that day (I was not baptized as an infant). But when I use holy water from the font and trace the sign of the cross over my body, isn't that what I'm doing? Remembering my baptism and that indelible mark left by the Holy Spirit? I haven't ruled out religious tattoos, but you've certainly given me pause to consider the why.

I once heard a speaker who spent some time in Egypt with Coptic Christian woman. She noticed that each one of them had a small cross tattooed on the inside of the wrist. She was told that because of the area where they live, at any time Coptic Christians could be persecuted for their faith. The cross is there so they are never tempted to deny their faith to save their life. What a moving story! It was the first and only time I've considered getting a tattoo, not only to be in prayer for and solidarity with them, but as a reminder of the blessing of religious freedom.

I got a tattoo in 1990 before the craze took over (I am female)…I am grateful I got it in a discreet place. I am glad I never got another one. I used to like the esthetic (& I still do!) but I hate how cheap it makes women look. It’s unsightly & awful. I won’t get another one & now think clear skin is more beautiful. Aesthetics. Here are four common styles of tattoos - wallpaper designs, comic book art, political graffiti, and branding. Tattoos are pop art. Seldom are they profound - and even more seldom are they artful. Skin is the canvas, ink is the medium, text and context are quickly revealed (or lost completely) depending on the inscription and graphics. For instance, I can read the meaning behind the "semper fi" or "anchors away" found on the military man, or the Cross/Star of David/the Hindi "Aum," as classic examples of branding; the credal statements contained in phrases such as "Black Lives Matter" or the anarchist "A" in the circle (etc.) as types of protest graffiti; the various overly developed images of wolves, skulls, cartoon characters etc. as examples of comic book expression; and the "barbed wire around the bicep," the roses with thorns and other extravagant types of flower arrangements - as well as the sundry hearts placed in intimate locations - as a form of derma wallpaper - but the result is ultimately cheap and lacking in quality. It's final expression will always be lacking. It is not suitable for framing or for careful consideration. When God made Man, He declared that the finished product (as it were) was "very good." Very good indeed. We need not embellish it any further. To do so is vanity.

      That is my thinking.
And, living on a city by the beach for 16 of the last 20 years, i've seen mure than my share or tatoos. And I came to condense that thinking in "made to the image and likeness of God, do you think you can improve on that?"
Seldom I see a tatoo wearer that does live an empty or dissolute life So while I've seen well crafted ones, they always carry that stigma.
That is not to say about "themed tatoos" those that denote engaging in sin in a professional manner. Those are pridely displayed be the wearer. Now I realize I've not overcame the disgust I feel when I see it, while the proper, catholic reaction would be to pray for those people.
Also this looks like a case where a tatoo is clearly not moral.

There's truth in what Fr. Gregory is saying here. I got my 1st tattoo on my deltoid 30 years ago...which expanded to a half sleeve, then complete sleeve. My tatts are all Catholic, spectacularly so: Sacred Heart; Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Mother; St. Michael with shield and sword; Crown of Thorns; and Our Lady of Recovery with images of my parents and a niece under her mantle. Interspersed in the "negative space" are the blue/green colors of Our Lady of Guadalupe's mantle with gold stars. I don't regret them, they serve as conversation starters about the faith with persons who otherwise would not speak about the faith. Honestly, that's an unintended consequence of why I did it, but overall I'm glad I have them. And soon enough I'll be gone, so...but I have zero desire to get any more.

An arrow along the backside of my forearm. And a sun on my right shoulder. I mean, I don’t not like them, as I never bought into getting something edgy for edginess’ sake… well, okay, that’s a lie. But I learnt my lesson :)
Most of mine have personal relevance to me (I’m an English major-hence the books, my name means “prince”-hence the crown, the quip says “brave the storm”-just a reminder to stay strong through life’s hurdles, the arrow is a cover-up and a symbol of moving forward at last, and the sun is a cover-up and reminder to always aim for the highest good).
The cover-ups are a good indicator that I had my share of dumb tats. Hence my ambivalent attitude towards getting tatted. As far my advice not to get some, it mainly stems from a late consideration of what I wanted to express and look like in old age, and I guess the older I’ve gotten, the more I realize that I’d rather manifest an aesthetic that bespeaks of self-control and humble senility than some scarred picture-book showing a youth rife with reckless behavior.

Just a comment from a bit different perspective and mindset.
For my first sleeve I was thinking about getting pieces that would rather remind me of what I was able to do in memorable moments of my life. The tattoos I have on one of my sleeve are related to the artistic work I performed with great musicians and graphic artists, and for me personally it is a reminder of special relations and creativity brought up from these interactions.
How I chose the tattoo artists was also important, because I always asked them what is the technique they have never done before and would like to try out. This way the situation seemed engaging for all sides, focused on the artistic value. Really, everytime we met these artists were enthusiastic that they can perform their art and create something good.
However, I agree with fr. Gregory that the average idea to get a tattoo is more related to marking ourselves on who we would like to be and not about what for we were called to be.
Secondly, the second sleeve I have was made by my girfriend, also a great artist. I decided to allow her to create a garden right on my arm. Simple as that, beautiful piece.
What was important is that the main topics of our discussions about art is how important it is to present beauty and goodness, focus on the highest values and blessings in life. Many times clients come to her asking for dark tattoos, praising evil or whatever, she refuses to do that or at least tries to convince on a better idea.
One client came in to have a tattoo reminding about her child who passed away - she wanted a date of this tragic moment and a sad angel. My girlfriend asked her how is she going to remember her child - by the good or bad moments, and presented an idea to show goodness, happiness and beauty of the relation she had with her child. And that's the idea that was chosen in the end.
What is interesting that after some time of this approach, clients come back with other people asking for one of these "good" tattoos, because everyone else offer the dark and evil stuff.
That's interesting, because she is the only artist focused on bright side so openly that I know.
Artists I know tend to focus on artistic value, quality, composition and MAKING SENSE in their art. Coming from Central Europe this might be slightly different to US approach to tattoos - not to offend good artists, but there's definitely a quality difference on both regions.
This being said, after coming back to Catholic Church, my approach changed slightly, but not very much. I treat what I have on me almost equal to jewellery, reminding of good things and relations I had or have, and being nice artistic pieces.
Just a final word to those who's approach changed definitely - Regretting tattoos is a thing not only for converts but mostly for people who come to mind that praising weak values is lame :)
Don't worry, Jesus called us by our names directly and sanctifies our nature. New eyes is one of the wonders.

I have to say, this is one of the only times I’ve had a difference of opinion about a moral issue with Fr. Pine. (The only other one which comes to mind is that lying is always wrong, which Fr. Pine defended during his debate with Dr. Janet Smith). Let me preface this by saying that both my mother and father have tattoos and my only brother is strongly considering getting a "sleeve". Having said that, my opinion is that our bodies are to be pure temples, not stained with temporary markings because ultimately they should be directed toward the transcendentals... goodness, truth, and beauty. Tattoos are not inherently “true”, nor “beautiful” (as often seen in an aging body.) I know that’s not a popular belief, but I think it’s an unnecessary defilement often with a narcissistic end. My advice...? Stay holy and stainless, both in body and in spirit.

Thanks Father. I agree with your analysis. I always liked St. Thomas’ analogy to the Roman soldier’s tattoo for the Sacraments. Was he also the one who analogized to the brand? Anyway, the Sacraments offer the font of grace to keep the image “pure,” and to repair it if it’s been disfigured. The soldier’s tattoo came with the promise of military comeraderie. I’m not sure what protection is offered for a tattoo, apart from the Penance, which can wash away the fault of the sin (but not the punishment, without much growth in holiness). I grew up in Massachusetts, which actually outlawed tattoo parlors until about 20 years ago. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s worth caution. Thanks again!

I’ve been actually thinking about getting one for the last twenty years. I’m very happy with them. They are crosses and Jesus on the cross. I love them. What I love most about them, is that I did not realize the reaction I would receive from people. They are great reactions, curious ones. Because people asks about them, it gives me the opportunity to speak about Jesus to them. I don’t like pushing my beliefs on people or trying to change anyone, but if they bring it up, they are asking in a way to be instructed.

I got it because I needed/wanted a sacramental my kids couldn't yank off my neck and because I'd just been through a really rough patch with my faith-- I needed a way to rededicate myself to it. I have what I think is a novel take on this... Tattoos are immodest. The modesty that the Bible teaches is 90% about money. It tells us not to show displays of wealth, that other people will treat us with favoritism. It's wrong to seek or to show favoritism.
Tattoos are a permanent display of wealth, because they are expensive. Nicer tattoos with higher quality ink are even more expensive. They take away one's ability to be modest, in a way that no clothing or jewelry can do. A man can remove his Armani suit. A woman can take off her diamonds and fur coat. The clothes are what make the man. Strip us all bare and we are all equally rich and poor, as far as the eye can tell.
If you subscribe to the idea that modesty is about sex, then you would also have to agree with me that the tattoo draws attention to one part of the body rather than another, which I think is the essential problem with sexually immodest dress. God made us beautifully and he designed our bodies perfectly. He even created us in the "image and likeness of God". So by focussing or detracting from one part of the body or another, we take away from its aesthetic unity and draw the attention to sex. Because only one part of the body is covered by a bikini, that's the part you think about. Because only a little skin is showing when a girl wears a midriff baring shirt, you're focussed on the psrt of her you *can* see. I think tattoos have the potential to do the same by their placement and visual elements.
So I think whatever your opinion is on modesty, tattoos miss the mark because they are immodest both in wealth and in sex.

So, I recently got a temporary tattoo--one that is applied in the same manner as a traditional tattoo, but fades within a year. I had my reasons, but one thing from this video that stands out to me is the first point, that it spurs people to get more and more tattoos. I've found in only a few days that I've gone from having little to no interest in tattoos to watching tons of tattoo videos and thinking about maybe getting more. I found that sudden change in my perspective surprising, a bit odd, and also somewhat suspicious spiritually. I try to be mindful of ways in which we can make ourselves spiritually vulnerable, and I just have to wonder if there's something spiritually relevant in this. Or is it just a very psychologically validating form of self-expression, a way of making a bold statement about what you value and find beautiful? I wasn't sure what I thought about tattoos, which is why I got a temporary one; but I've found I like it more than I expected. I understand more now why people get into them. I guess I have the rest of the year to discern the reason why.

It would be great if more Christians would be like you, a solid critical sense and empathy for both sides of the coin.
The thing I would guess we agree the most is how the innate staticness of a tattoo works against it.. the world changes, you change, everything changes: marking yourself with something so permanent does show some lack of foresight.. but where we disagree is on the 'usefulness' of a tattoo, if you can call it that. I think tattooing yourself is more that instrumentalizing an idea on your own skin; it's a show of love, respect, dedication and respect even at an intellectual level.. It means you are ready to suffer pain for what you believe or enjoy, and (even if it can also come out as stubborn) I think that's admirable in a lot of levels.

I think this is assuming people are ascribing too much depth to tattoos. It’s not that deep, especially if it’s just ornamental. Which, sure, that could seem vain, much like other form of grooming or beautification. I decided to get them later in life, but only of little beautiful, delicate things. I don’t regret them.
And as for people going through phases or changing-some things we still hold dear later in life. I certainly have, especially when it comes to Jesus, literature and art! As long as it isn’t something you’re putting above your relationship/walk with Christ, and that it doesn’t depict something evil, it is morally neutral. But necessary? Not at all. Just something “fun”.

Tattoo culture was very prominent in criminal rings and the early homosexual movements in the US. Even though I don't believe these groups can have an exclusive premium on the act of tattooing, I think we should bear in mind how a tattoo would affect the peace of mind of those around us, especially family members who might disapprove of them.

    • @tiagoguinhos
      @tiagoguinhos ปีที่แล้ว +4

I don't think you should refrain from having a tattoo of something simply because it holds a past you dislike.
By that standard, no one should talk to people that dyed their hair (since that was very uncommon before), and no one should follow science (as that was considered wizardly up to the mid XIX century). Avoiding the problem is far from solving the stigma around it and I feel like its borderline irresponsible to believe otherwise.
If you have love for something, I do think its okay to show it on your body.. be a sign of pride, respect, or whatever else. Now yes, those could have moral implication.. but at that point it isn't the fault of the tattoo itself, it's the fault of the one that chose to tattoo that.

And they are patently ugly especially on women who should not be desecrated by ink. I like to ask myself in various situations, "What would Bishop Fulton Sheen think about this?" I got two tattoos in my early 20s, neither of them are very big and they're both in spots that can be easily covered. I don't regret them in the slightest but my opinion on tattoos has somewhat changed. I still don't mind a few tattoos, but now I think it looks kinda silly when someone has a ton of them (my opinion on tramp stamps has never changed though, always hated them). That being said, I think having a bunch of facial piercings (especially the nose and lips) is way more trashy and it's usually a major red flag.

I posted this on FB but thought it might be useful to post direct here:
The tattoo controversy has echoes of the circumcision controversy in the early church in Acts. The Council of Jerusalem came down on the side of ambivalence regarding circumcision for Gentile believers. The ruling was that it carried no benefit. But the ruling did not forbid circumcision. Just coercion of the practice was forbidden as it fell outside the concern of the Church. Now we know tattoos are explicitly against the Mosaic Law. But as this Law has been fulfilled in Christ, what was once unclean (tattoo) might by some be interpreted as clean in Christ. Here the Church might do well to remain ambivalent. And here we see just as a Catholic might elect for circumcision for cultural or medical reasons, they may just the same desire a tattoo. Provided the subject of the tattoo remains neutral regarding Church teaching, perhaps ambivalence should win the day. Let those who want tattoos have tattoos. Let those who prefer circumcision be circumcised.

Could you comment on religious names and how they are different than self given nicknames. In the section that you mention that tattoos have the potential to be narcissistic, it seems that self chosen religious names could possibly operate in similar fashion (expressing oneself and personal devotion etc.) You touch on this as well with your example of nicknames. Thanks!

Watched the whole video, profoundly thoughtful stuff. But I thought of a simpler objection; namely, we know from Scripture that our bodies are temples of the Holy Ghost. It’s a pretty common and well-known biblical statement. It seems to me that what would extend logically from here is that anything inappropriate or sacrilegious to a temple is not permissible to our bodies. Is graffiti on a temple appropriate or permissive? No, that would be a degradation of the temple, no matter its level of artistic quality or intended meanings. Whether by ink or spray paint, there seems to be an ‘unfittingmess’ here, an incongruity with the sacral character of the bodies we’ve received. Owing to this basic Truth we have from Revelation, I think it’s warranted to prescribe more than mild discouragement; it’s at least a venial sin against Justice, probably particularly against piety.

I have a tattoo of cross with my family name to honor my adopted family, and my family who have passed on. Also my daughters names, first daughter almost died when she was born, my second daughter is our miracle baby who we prayed for after my wife had cancer and we weren't supposed to have any more babies. My wife and I prayed the rosary and prayed and she was born praise be to God. I'm thinking of getting a catholic tattoo, since I have come back after being away for over 20 years, and now madly in love of my Catholic faith. Good topic father God bless you.

As someone who has tattoos (and will probably get more), I like his arguments and think they should be taken seriously.

  • @OxygenBeats
    @OxygenBeats ปีที่แล้ว +5

I'm not mad, but I do completely disagree.
    1. I have a tattoo of a fretboard on my right outer forearm - it helps me practice my fingering and note recognition on the guitar without constantly having a guitar on me.
    2. I have a tattoo of piano keys on my left inner forearm - it helps me think about/visualize music theory concepts when there's no piano around and I've found it very useful.
    3. I have a tattoo of a staff + melody in sheet music - it helps me practice my sight reading when I don't have any sheet music in front of me..
All of these things have been very useful for studying, learning, and growing. They also are good for marketing/branding and starting conversations with people who might be looking to work with a musician, so they help my business. I know that most people aren't this practical when getting tattoos, but I'm found them to be very helpful and don't regret them at all. I'm sure you could put translations of phrases into different languages on yourself too, to help you learn a language... I know that having a chart with chinese characters and the words they translate to would be super useful, or the same could be true with japanese or other asian languages. Perhaps I first thought of this when I first watched the show Prison Break. He put blueprints/mappings on his body, and specifically for that reason. Tattoos have incredible potential; just as much as a blank sheet of paper does, but tattoos are always with you.
The argument that "Jesus didn't write any scripture, therefore we should not write anything regarding scripture" is very weak, as you probably will admit... it means that all of the written rules/laws regarding Christianity or Catholicism (or anything else) are inherently sinful, and every single bible in existence is sinful. Writing anything down would be sinful. Libraries and museums would be places of sin, purely by the fact that they have information recorded....
I think the strongest argument you can make AGAINST tattoos is that there is a small risk of complications/infections from getting a tattoos, and that you shouldn't risk harming your body... even that wouldn't be a strong argument, because I don't think you'd agree that everyone should always act like cowards... after all, it is written that you should carry your cross and follow Jesus, right? That means putting yourself in danger.
But rather than saying tattoos are bad, I think you should focus more on "which tattoos are bad"... I don't know anyone who actually believes that reading + writing is sinful... writing something down on paper is not inherently bad; you might write something beneficial or you might write something 'sinful'... that's where your argument should really lie.

I realized I don't want any tattoos by not getting any, and years afterwards, realizing the ideas I had had for tattoos now seemed stupid to me. Tattoos are like a snapshot. You get a tattoo that reflects a moment in your life, and you keep it even though in a few years you will not be that person anymore. Something that is very meaningful for you in 2010 may not be meaningful for you anymore in the future.
They are mostly a source of regret.

I guess that I am of the old fashioned school of thought. I really dislike tattoos. Primarily just because I think that they are incredibly ugly. This may result from my having visited Auschwitz when I was very young. I saw a horrifying display of actual lamp shades made by the Nazis from the skin of victims. Second, I believe that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. And I don't want my temple marred by graffiti. Finally, given the nature of our mortal coils, skin eventually goes south as we age, and there are other skin changes, too. Once jokingly I told my younger brother that I was thinking about getting a tattoo on my butt that would say , "Never Again". He cautioned me against it. He said, "when you are in the nursing home, I don't want to have to explain why you have "No Rogaine" tattooed on your butt. ....thus, ink with caution.☮️

Whether you see it as graffiti or as a mural or a fine painting is entirely a matter of opinion I guess... it's really just a matter of your culture. Usually graffiti is done without permission... but typically people get tattooed with permission, so it's not really a good analogy, in my opinion.

    • @larakaramazova777
      @larakaramazova777 ปีที่แล้ว

@@OxygenBeats Who cares whether it's a good analogy or not? IMO tattoos are ugly. And my opinion is the only one that matters. (to me). I notice that only extremely rarely does a person stop at one tattoo. Limited canvas space. Thus likelihood that the combined effect is haphazard and ugly.

I think getting the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit on the inside of one forearm and the 7 Virtues on the other would not be too bad. I'm not too smart and can get them mixed up and having them like that would like a cheat sheet for being a better person.

I have many tattoos and wish I hadn't gotten most of them, especially a facial tattoo that is a totally arbitrary symbol that can't really be covered and would cost thousands to remove. I'm getting older and as your skin ages so does your ink and mostly not in an attractive fashion. These all had "meaning" when I got them, but I had dropped away from the church. I've since returned and now everything has changed. I urge you to sincerely pray about any ink before getting it. 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Oh yes-the narcissistic part is so true. But also have a rather skewed sense of “art”. Some tattoos seem intended to disturb-obviously-and I question the sociability of those folks who are compelled to get them. Displaying one on one’s body draws attention and I have found that those tattoos are on all kinds of people, depressed, resentful, needy or even overtly boisterous people ego like to dominate their world. It is like too much of a good thing if it is emotional much. And they are really expensive!!
I have two tattoos, one of which is Disney themed and was done in a very tastefully (sparse) decorated former train station in which Walt and his new wife caught the train shortly after their wedding! The walls of said tattoo “parlor” are not plastered with skulls, nudity and devils-like a place you’d think was a pirate’s brothel down on the waterfront somewhere. Oh no. It is artistic, tasteful, and with minimal signage and wall art which was essential for me in choosing the place wherein the tattoo was done.
And the other tattoo is of a pair of pence nez with G.K. Chesterton’s signature which has become well-known for its unique character and style. It is just inside my left arm (and where the tattoo is close to my heart). I can show it to others or not.
