- I celebrated my 29th birthday by hiking my age in miles! Watch me trek through a 2-mile tunnel, over railway bridges, and past numerous waterfalls as I ring in the last year of my 20s. Have you ever done a birthday challenge? What should I do next year? Let me know in the comments!

I hiked what should've been a 18 mile hike for my 59th birthday to the top of Charleston Peak, about 3 miles from the end I noticed that my glasses were no longer hooked to my shirt button (where I used to carry them always til now) the last time I took off my pack was near the peak. So I had to turn around and hike almost back up to the peak (4000 ft elev gain) and found my glasses in the middle of the trail, I took a picture of them, picked em up and hiked back down in mostly the dark. It ended up being a 24 mile hike with nearly 7000 ft of elev gain. Whew...
When I turned 30 I went to 30 new coffee shops within the year! It was lovely and energetic!

There's no quarantine.
I turned 67 in June, and just did my first ever backpacking trip. It was only 8 miles, but about 2500' of elevation gain, up the Lostine River. It was beautiful! Love your videos; you're never to old for a something new :)

We just decided to take my mom on her first backpacking trip for her 61st birthday. I don't think I've ever seen her be so excited for anything.

At what age are we allowed to switch from miles to kilometers?
At 58, I'm well past that point!
My goal this year is fathoms.
The miles to km switch is unclear....but at 50, you can switch to "100 - Age" in km.
I saw a distance marker that measures the distance in leagues yesterday. I was three leagues from Geneva, and 16 from Lausanne. You definitely don't want to walk your age in leagues. It's about 4.4km per league.
Whatever age you are when you move to Canada.

Well, I will not be hiking 42 miles on my birthday next year. lol. Last year I turned 40 and thru-hiked the AT. Best year of my life.

I can actually feel your feet just watching the video - I remember doing the Nijmegen Marches in Holland a while back. 100 miles in 4 consecutive days in full kit too. Trust me, British Army boots were the worst to march any distance in those days, so those morale swings are well known to me.
I'm still mates with some of those in our team that year but my feet literally cringed while watching your more achey moments on that trail for your 29th.
Keep them coming, Miranda. Bringing back long forgotten painful memories as much as they are entertaining :)))
I backpacked 40 miles in the Sierras with my friend for her 40th birthday. It was our first big backpacking trip and it was awesome! I love birthday challenges!
I don't do a birthday challenge specific to each year/age but I do have a sort of overall challenge to do something cool/fun/adventurous every year on my birthday ever since my first cross-country bicycle trip happened to finish up at the Pacific (Cannon Beach) on my birthday in 2008. I've been in National Parks either hiking or cycling, completed sunrise summits of 14ers, backpacking trips (like I did for my birthday this past weekend), glacier kayaking in Alaska, on RAGBRAI, etc. It's so much fun to do something special with friends :)

For my Dirty 30 I took on 3 outdoor challenges from my bucket list in 3 different areas, one for each decade. I ran my first half marathon (Tacoma City half), road in my first organized bike ride (I actually did 2, the chilly hilly and the STP), and did my first solo thru hike (the wonderland trail). I got the idea from a fellow former green vest and as a fellow alumni of store 78 I think you should continue the tradition!
The John Wayne Trail and Snoqualmie Tunnel!! I've walked and biked that trail several times. Oh, the memories. Happy Birthday!
Thanks for your comment. I was wondering where she was. Beautiful scenery. I just did the Cle Elum to Thorpe and back yesterday for a total of 37.81 miles. I knew it was going to be hot (99 forecast) but until I did it didn't know how brutal it would be. I'll take hers in the rain any day.
I finished a 470 mile hike 2 days after my 44th birthday. It was awesome. The Pinhoti Trail to the northern terminus, then north on the Benton Mackaye. Stayed at campsite 44 in The Great Smoky Mountains on my day. Apple Crisp, and chicken teriyaki.
This proves that a day of hiking is better than a day at home eating birthday cake. Happy Birthday Miranda!
Perhaps a bite of cake at the end of the trail is the best of both worlds!

Way to go, Miranda. My current goal is to section hike the Ouachita Trail, 223 miles. My last section got me to 94. Hike my age in a day? On my next birthday I will be 79. I don't think so. Good job on your videos. You inspire.

I would totally do this......10 years ago.
.....now, "walking my age in miles" is equivalent to cowboys "riding off into the sunset".
My hikes tend to be more....well, like that Quantic song:
"Sometimes I wonder if, if I know where I'm going,
I go for a walk like this,
And it seems I have been walking for years and years and years,
And I don't know where I'm going.
I hear the sound leading me on,
And I don't know where it is taking me"
.....except, you know....I bring a compass so I can find my way home (as if i could get lost on a half mile walk.)

This year for my birthday I went to Yosemite for the first time, and did a 2 night backpack trip, that was totally inspired by your backpacking wisdom and enthusiasm Miranda! It was only the 3rd backpacking journey I've ever done, and now I'm totally hooked! And last year for my 40th, (during the pandemic, d'oh) I went skydiving for the first time. So I've decided every birthday of my 40s will be spent doing something brand new for me!

Hi Miranda, love your videos. I hiked the enchantments with my friends last year for my birthday. We did it in a day, took us 17 hrs. Totally worth it.
