BMW iX xDrive 40 MSport - is this the pick of the iX range?

  • BMW's iX electric flagship has had its fair share of criticism since its launch; mostly surrounding its looks. And although we have subjected the car to a full AutoEV road test before, that was the more powerful, bigger battery xDrive 50. However, it is the smaller battery, lower-powered xDrive 40 that BMW say will be the big seller in the range, competing with the likes of Audi's e-tron, the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Jaguar I-Pace. But at that lower price, are there more compromises to be made? In order to find out, Bryan has been spending more time with the car and puts it through the road test that actual car buyers trust to deliver the definitive verdict - the AutoEV one.
    AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

    Just got my IX 40 2023 model love the car, first electric car, range is a bit challenging I think, struggling a bit with range anxiety given that it’s my first EV but amazing car so far!

    BMW ix ,,I love it ,Ive just bought it 😂. I’ve just sold my Jaguar iPace , this Great British Mark in my case was out of warranty , but with only 7 200 miles on the clock , mainly due to the pandemic etc . So a trip to the supermarket ,and we were stuck , it wouldn’t move . Car recovery to York Jaguar dealership and 10 weeks later I got may car back , a new B E C M , battery electric control module , a £1000 bill . York Jaguar said they were very disappointed that Jaguar H Q technical refused to send a technician to help , leaving them to figure it out and me a disabled driver without a car and no offer of a curtesy car . I’ve just read in the press September 2022 Jaguar , Land Rover to train 29000 staff 10,000 in U.K to work on electric cars !! . The iPace has been out since 2018 and now there training staff to repair them ! . So it’s bye bye Jaguar, thanks for nothing , and hello to Hermon the German .

    Liked your review. I recently bought an iX 40 '72 plate. Absolutely love it. Sheer luxury interior, great entertainment even though not Bowers version. Lots of mature drivers, like me 66 😂 ask about it. Do wonder what the 50 would be like but other than the extra umph, range and real wheel steering, I think mine is great for me.

    Thanks for the great video, I drive and EQC and my lease is due for renewal.. life was a lot simpler three years ago I had a simple shortlist of three cars and EQC was my final choice. I can't fault the EQC but I didn't want to just get a new one. iX is the top of my list but only he 40 is included within the offers range (otherwise I could pay over 25% more for same vehicle of purchased out of offer). Then they have just added more cars including Q8 etron Sportback, I4 M50, EQE saloon, Q4 e iron sport back to name a few (all within my lease range).
    My conclusion is to get over the range anxiety, with todays electric rates I limit my charging to off peak (4hours currently but could be up to 6 on a new intelligent tariff). So started to look at efficiency rather than battery size (most SUVs get you 18-20 m per hour charging at home and the saloons get you around 22 m per hour charging. So my final decision is the iX40 after test driving it, its cheaper (on the lease offer), standard equipment and infotainment system beats all rivals (even things like head on display and wireless airplay are standard) and it keeps the family happy as the prefer SUV space to saloon. (sorry for the essay but felt the need to share - or seeking validation for my decision making lol)

      I think you’ve made a good choice. For all it’s controversial looks might put people off, it’s a really decent car to drive. I’ve done a few big trips in iX’s now and each time I’m won over by their comfort and drive ability. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and comment. Do let us know how you get on with it in the future.

    Agree with pretty much everything in your video 👍🏻. I have this car in Mineral White (storm trooper spec) and I really like the looks from the front and rear, indifferent on the side profile. Had the car since the beginning of March and done about 1500 miles. It’s really nice to drive, I can live with the steering wheel but I’d prefer a round one!
    Range is fine for me, but I don’t do big mileage. If I did a lot of big trips I think charging all the time could get tedious, but it’s fine for me charging at home/work with the occasional public charge.
    Biggest let down for me is lack of storage space both in the cabin (no sunglasses holder, tiny glove box) and boot, no small pockets at the sides, under the floor is pretty small too. I had Merc GLC previously and that had more storage space although smaller car. Lack of a fruit is also lazy from BMW in my opinion. There’s plenty of air in there ( you can open the bonnet) just needs some decent packaging.
    Enjoy your videos, keep them coming😀

    Brilliant review, balanced view. I went to BMW today and iX 50 now’s starts at £106K. Unfortunately the iX40 just doesn’t have the range as once a week I have a weekly 250m round trip and I still have limited trust in the national rapid charger network.

    I drive an X5 40d M Sport from 2014, and having test driven the iX 40, I found it as quick, if not a little faster, but it was a bit odd as you have less noise, but in a good way. I did feel at home right away though. I'm tall 6ft 4in and the X5/iX is really the minimum I can fit in if I need to be comfortable with support underneath my legs. The boot space is a bit of an issue in terms of size compared with the X5 and the range of 200 miles in all weather is OK for me, my drive to work is 50 miles each way, so there is enough extra for accidents and roadworks. The cost is high as the iX 40 M sport is now £80K but does come with a lot of "extras". I'm torn between the iX for comfort or the Tesla Model Y for tech and range. - Thanks for the review!

    Very nice review! I only be o differ on the wheel. The steering wheel is great. It allows to drive in very comfortable hand positions, identify its orientation very clearly without looking, and is still round enough to serve as a round wheel when needed.

    I currently have the e tron sportback 55 and contemplating this. My only issue is the range, can someone tell me what real world range is please at full charge (summer and winter). My current car in winter, if I put climate control on the range decreases by 30-40 miles! The new Q8 version of my car has a significantly better range but I will not feel like its a new car as its pretty much identical to my current car. TIA

    This is a beautiful car inside and out. Pros: pano roof, rear bench, materials, laserlights, auto hitch, airy cabin, decent trunk, amazing effectivity - only 10min worse than xdrive50 on 1000km challange. Problems: front seat discomfort, weak massage, harman kardon nothing special, loud compared to etron, no reserve wheel, no frunk, harsh ride with 22inch wheels if configured without air suspension, frameless door rattles.
    Overall: best suv ev for me and my smallish family regarding price / effectivity / value / quality / technology / concept.
    What is missing: strong massage, double side charging port, frunk, bigger glovebox, bigger trunk, reserve tyre, button layout for controlling the cabin climate.

    I've seen a large number of videos on this car (can't decide if I want to buy it) and this is one of the most informative and balanced I've seen, well done. The iX50 is 150 kg heavier and is therefore less nimble than the 40, if we can use that word for these big beavers. But my main reason for being indecisive and waiting for the i5 touring, is the 500 litre boot.

    I do like the look of this BMW, I don't really like the over busy control screen, I suspect a lot of that will never get used, and the things people would use they will get sick of scrolling through pages looking for them. So I would say that the KIA EV6 is smarter in that respect.
    Something the BMW web site doesn't mention is pulling weight (for a caravan) It might be there somewhere but I couldn't see it.

    The 22 inch wheels kill the range, on 20 inch wheels you will easily get 20 miles more range. The best compromise is the 21 inch, they look better than the 20’s and give you more range than the 22’s.

  • @nrml76
    @nrml76 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Unlike the average motor journalist, you actually have given some time, thought and effort into understanding the product you are reviewing before expressing your opinions👍.
    The average iX is going to be used for short work commutes, the school run, 1-2 hour weekend trips and the occasional longer journey once or twice a year. This car will do that all in comfort. A 200 mile range is quite easy to live with if some thought is put into how it will be used 98% of the time. Unfortunately, most automotive journalists can't think outside the speed, sporty handling and range box and the general public take their poorly considered opinions for the gospel truth.
    Super fast charging would have been nice but to be honest, the major expansion in the fast charging network in the UK has been mainly in the 150KW segment and lower, so I don't think most owners would lose out much.....at least for the next few years.
    I disagree with the Frunk/ Froot opinion. In 2 years of driving a etron, I have never once had to use it for storage.

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your kind comment @nirmal. The aim with our videos is to give actual EV buyers a detailed test on each car we review. Whilst we do sometimes film on car launches, it can be tricky to give our full verdict on a car when we have only had a couple of hours with it, so we tend to wait and test them over a longer period before delivering our final verdict. And when we do have them for longer, I also use it as my main car doing the stuff owners will do, such as, putting my family in it, using it for work, etc. Anyway, thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment, as its very much appreciated.

    seen one in a showroom. it looks like an angry hamster which has just eaten a supermarket. and i can't get over how the boot is no bigger than the ix3 or indeed my 320 estate. and as for the miles, well, it's on a par with the XC40 recharge. i'm looking more at an ix3; which has a lot of legacy ICE interior and is only RWD, but for a model with all the options, you get better range and all the fancy features. in something which is almost small enough to be usable in a city.

    I have never been convinced by this obsessive need to have so much power in an EV, It makes no sense with the huge battery weight needed especially in a SUV. Tesla Plaid with over 1000 bhp is stupid normal drivers will not have the skill to cope with this and you simply don't need that much performance on the road. I like the look of the iX with just one caveat the lower front facia large black panel inserts which are too big and should be in body colour, with perhaps a smaller black accent, which is why the black car looks better (or a dark colour). With respect to range their was a recent article that suggested the iX is going to be fitted with a new design dual chemistry battery pack at the end of this year (exclusive joint venture with BMW), which will increase the range of the iX 50 from 326 to 600 miles (although US range tests have shown over 350 miles is possible on the present car). This should raise the i40 to well over 400 miles. No word on price or weight changes. However this could allow a smaller battery size and reduce the excessive battery weight, which then would actually increase the effective range by a lower overall kerb weight.
