4:38 If I'm not mistaken, Tarantino shoot cinemascope 4-perf (around 21.95 mm × 18.66 mm usable area). The sensor size of Komodo is 27.03 mm × 14.26 mm, and 4:3 of that sensor is around 19.01 mm × 14.26 mm. Thus, Tarantino's 40mm has a wider field of view than your 40mm. I think it is beneficial to keep in mind that when people talk about favouring a specific focal length, they are talking about a specific field of view. 40mm on 4-perf cinemascope is not the same field of view as 40mm on a 4:3 cropped Komodo sensor. I saw this recently in another video, a guy showing lots of clips of movies that were shot with 40mm lenses, but ignored the fact that the films were shot on different sensors/film sizes, even different aspects ratios. (That said, amazing video! Such high production value for a youtube video. Instant subscribe! You really made me want the combination of Komodo+Vazen.)
Thanks for your very qualified comment! Something I didn’t really think about tbh, but it makes a hell lot of sense, happy to have someone with your in depth knowledge in the community ✌🏼

Ugh, I can't find any resource simply stating the resolutions Komodo is using for anamorphic modes. What resolution is Komodo using for 4:3 anamorphic? Seems like it should be a simple question to answer, but no spec even states it. I'm interested, because I also want to know what the max frame rate would be in that cropped format.
If my calculations are right it should be 4320 x 3240 as it’s simply the 6K resolution cropped to 4:3. So, the max frame rate still is the same as in 6K as well, 40fps.
@@MortyFilms thanks for the response. That’s kinda poor. Resolution loss, but no appreciable frame rate gain. It feels like 50fps (or for me 48) should be possible considering 6k 2.4:1 has those modes.
@@MortyFilms appreciate you! Your review sold me on this lens. I opted for the amber version for the same setup and will drop some tests/videos on my channel in the coming weeks!
just picked up the 40mm and combined it with my z-cam. love the image, now it's time to find an ND solution. is it possible to combine the filter thing with diopters and then slap on the tilta mirage?
No, because the Mirage only slides on without the filter thing… I guess you could do it with rods, but then you’d probably have quite some vignetting, unless you’re shooting on a m4/3 sensor that is
@@MortyFilmshey man!! I am quite overwhelmed. Wdyt about the blazar remus lenses that are coming out. Thinking about selling the vazens. Or do you think it‘s better to keep em?
I like them a lot! Haven’t had the chance to really test them but I got my hands on em at NAB this week. I can actually really recommend them from all I know.
@@MortyFilms and from a business point - worth it to sell the vazen set with a loss? (mft, don‘t know how future proof it is for anything else besides zcam) and then get the blazar set? Quite unsure about that
Well, I’d say it really depends on what you wanna do personally. But I’d say the Blazars have more professional mounts, are smaller and light weight, cover more image circle and I personally like the look more than on the vazen. Maybe you should also have a look at their new Cato 2x anamorphics that they just released
I rented one of the Vazens and really loved the look on the Komodo but found it very hard to pull focus on such a wide aspect ratio image. I am using the Red Control app and you loose a lot of screen real estate to see where your focus is when viewing a 2.44:1 aspect ratio. Half the screen is black bars basically. How did you pull focus and manage to keep the handheld shots fairly steady? The lens is SO heavy!
I basically am switching between using the follow focus and focusing just on the barrel itself. Usually I got one hand on the top handle and the other one on the lens. I’m using the Atomos Ninja V with it’s focus peaking and don’t have problems focussing at all.
Thank you! I’m doing my grading in DaVinci using a plugin called Dehancer. It’s a very high quality film emulation tool with a lot of possibilities. I might do a video about it in the future if you’re interested :)
Ha ha, well it’s actually about 4.4 pounds, so still heavier than the Komodo by itself. But it balances nicely once you have a V-Mount in the back. I’m using a Sachtler Flowtech 75 with an Ace XL head. Works out for me, even though the fully built out rig reaches the heads maximum counterbalance. But so far, I didn’t have the money to afford another tripod head, as that would be even more expensive than the tripod itself already 😅
ปีที่แล้ว +1
Do you get any vignetting on the edges (or can you see the edges of the matte box corners) with the Tilta Mirage Matte box? With the screw in step up ring and filter, the vignette increases but when the lens doesn’t have anything the “art-effects” are less pronounced.
If I just put on the Mirage, it doesn’t make the vignetting any worse. Only if I use a second filter tray it becomes quite a problem. I haven’t actually compared the vignetting with the screw on ring, but it goes over the lens and doesn’t stick out that far, so I don’t think it makes the vignetting much worse actually.
I put on a plugin called Dehancer that added grain, halation and for some shots also blooming. All shots that weren’t filmed on the Vazen where shot on a regular Sigma Art 18-35mm.
They have a proper 2x squeeze, a native PL mount that you can shim up or down and also have a much higher quality, especially when it comes to the optics and the coating. The flares won’t be as dominant as in the Vazen. The Vazen basically is a cheap copy of the Orions.
Hey I have a question, I’m buying my first anamorphic and I’m wondering whether or not I should get a follow focus like yours or the Nucleus M Handle from Tilta
Hey, I guess it depends on what lens you’re getting and your shooting style. A simple follow focus is definitely more reliable and responsive, but for larger lenses and more flexibility the Nucleus M is really nice. You should keep in mind though that it is more expensive, bigger/heavier and requires more time to set up. So if you just want to shoot in a sort of run and gun setup and it’s not such a big lens anyway, you can definitely just get a simple follow focus for now. But if you want the flexibility to also be prepared for bigger productions where you maybe even have separate focus puller, the Nucleus M could be a smart investment.
Hello nice video :) am new in this zone so sorry for my greenhorn question :D can you shoot few shots with anamorphic lens and other with regular lense like nifty fifty and combine this shots in one video?
