    Hey a quick FYI, I do have the EVF to the max brightness, and the screen set to standard. I showed this in my initial review. Also if watch till the end I explained how I now use the camera as intended or design for, hence ditching the grip and holding the camera like a M body.
    Also merry Xmas guys and have a great New Years.
    And if anyone knows how to set a custom button to recenter the tracking box, please let me know 😊

    You guys are never happy... Modern days photographers looking for perfect camera that doesn't exist... I like your input but if you wanted a better screen and ergonomics you could get z8 z6 both really good for your issues... Zf was made for aesthetics and film camera look for hipsters and Fuji fanbase... Zf is heavy because is well built not cheap like some plastic Fuji cameras ... You could have bought a pancake lens like 26mm... Nikon almost always advertise zf with pancakes not pro s line lens... You want something lighter you have options..

      @@gerardneedham I really don't see anything Zf needs to actually improve with. Respectfully your issues sound more like user error. If you are expecting Zf to behave/feel the same way as something like a Z8 in terms of grip and how you adjust exposure with dials. (which also isn't' an issue because you can use the Zf without having to use top dials.) Then honestly just sounds like lack of user ability to use the camera. I never understood people buying cameras like Xt5/zf then complain for them being retro themed cameras. I've been through Sony/Fuji/and now Nikon and it's been as easy as any other camera I've ever used. The ISO function was a bit weird. But that's really the only rational nitpick I can actually see.
      To me buying a Zf then complaining about the grip is like buying a motorcycle, only to complain about it having 2 wheels. You know what it is when you buy a retro camera.

      The screen on the ZF is one of the best on the market. It's two point one million dots, which is better than some of sony's flagship cameras and On par with all other flagship cameras, and it's only two thousand people complaining about the l c d screen are just idiots.

    Without questioning your experience, I find it unfortunate to hear this kind of criticism about the Zf. As a professional, I’m fortunate enough to work with all kinds of gear, and for my personal enjoyment, I own a Zf, which I use in the same spirit as I used my X-Pro3 and even my Leica M11. That is to say, as a camera that allows me to take photos, take my time, enjoy the process, have that tactile feeling, and engage in a more lively photography experience.
    Without calling your skills into question-which are outstanding, judging by your photos-I believe the issues you’re encountering may not necessarily stem from the camera itself. If you can expose correctly with your M9, I don’t think the problem lies with the Zf’s viewfinder or screen. I would suggest keeping the screen closed at all times, much like with an X-Pro3 or a film camera.
    In short, I feel you might be a bit harsh on this camera, while I personally think Nikon deserves praise for offering something many of us would have loved to see from Fujifilm, for example.
    That said, yes! There is one area where Nikon does deserve criticism: the Auto-ISO implementation. I understand the philosophy behind it, but I wish there were an option to keep the ‘C’ as mode automatic.

    • @gerardneedham
      @gerardneedham  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yeah that’s it, I also just don’t use the screen now, just the view finder. I also feel if we don’t express our opinions negative or positive cameras will never get better, or worse for me if I’m too positive about a camera, and don’t express my dislikes, someone will buy the camera and find out they don’t like it, and I’ll feel dishonest.

      I just expose by eye and adjust with the EV comp, I do shoot AV but I don’t look at the meter.

    I have the Smallrig grip and have no problem with ergonomics. I use primes a lot but doing events with the 70-180mm, 24-120mm, and I have done a 4 day music event with the 24-70mm 2.8 on it with no problems(my other camera was a Z8 with th 70-200mm 2.8).
    As an experienced Nikon user it is the same as using the Z6iii when you don't want to use the top controls. The AF-L button is better placed when having the front Function button set up to be a different different focus mode and are a back button focuser as on the Zf and Z6iii you have to hold it while on the Z8 and Z9 you set the up to press and it is activated and press it again to deactivate but don't get me goig on that problem.
    If you want to get quick action in varying conditions don't try to out smart the camera exposure.

    An interesting review. However, being both a film and digital photographer, I do not agree with your conclusions about this camera. I tend to shoot two handed and therefore the ergonomics have not been an issue for me. I recently returned from safari in Botswana and took the ZF primarily as my second camera. I quickly came to enjoy the experience of using this camera even in that harsh environment and I ended up using it the majority of the time. It’s really about adapting to the tool being used.

    • @gerardneedham
      @gerardneedham  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I fully agree with that, and that’s kinda my conclusion right? Use the camera how it’s supposed to be used, that’s why I’ve learned to adapt my shooting position to be more of a 3 point of contact (2 hands and eye on the view finder)
      I think I need more time to train away from my shooting style on my work cameras 😅

    I don’t get one thing when I shoot with big lenses I usually hold the lens not the camera. Do you have the added grip? I've gone back and forth recently in my search for the best image for the money with portability, usability and lenses. I was sure it was the ZF and I was done with Fuji but I've come to realise Fuji X is the best, for me. I shoot the XT3 and the f2 lenses for travel/documenting and f1.2 lenses for the special shots. Down the line I will get the GFX 50r and Mitakon 65mm f1.4 for the ultimate IQ. For what its worth, I think your images with the Fuji XT5 look better than the ones with the ZF. Fuji just has a way with the colours.

    Not point lack of skill, far away from this. But to shoot in super bright days, with a new camera you didn't test in those conditions before is 100% challenging, but not the camera's fault I guess. I use mine with a non reflective protective screen, adjusted view finder (brighter than the standard) and it works perfectly. I also added a handle on mine, so the camera is absolute flawless.

    I think I'm a bit different from most. I don't care about retro design. I grew up on film cameras. One day (at least the first day I noticed ), a Canon camera came out with a grip on on it. Woohoo! go Canon I thought; best camera body ever! It was a beautiful thing. Thank God we don't have to use grip-less cameras anymore. Then slowly something strange started to happen. Scroll wheels and menu dives and LCD screens started replacing the shutter dial and aperture rings on lenses and I didn't like it. I still don't. I bought the Zf so I can change settings with dials rather than menus and scroll wheels and have some control over what I'm doing with a quick glance at the camera body. I'd love a thoroughly modern Z8 camera body with dials. I'm old enough to have grown up on retro cameras but I don't like them `per se'. The lack of a grip does not make me feel nostalgic, it just makes me feel like I'm going to drop my camera - lol!
    I know all us old folks used to take photos without grips and AF and all the rest but man they were the bad old days not the good old days.
    I find the smallrig grip is fine and I use my 135mm Plena and 70-200 mm telephoto on the Zf just as well as I do on the Z6ii and D850 DSLR
    I think if dials don't do it for you from a functionality point of view I wouldn't keep it.
    Can't really comment on Mathew's M9 as I've never handled one. But I did get to play with a Leica M-A in the Leica store in Chadstone and it was a beautiful thing.
    I haven't noticed an issue with the screen so far but I'll pay more attention to it now
    Great vid. Thanks.
