Oomph. You've just converted me to the Nikon. I am just getting started with some photography, and obviously the Nikon comes with a prime lens. What adjustable lens would you suggest as a good all rounder for travel?
As a diehard Fujifilm user (16+ bodies and counting), The minute the ZF was announced it was an instant pre-order for me. Been using it for over a year now and I'm still in love with it.
Grabbed a ZF and I’m selling all my Fuji kit now. Sensor produces beautiful files and its low light is amazing. AF isn’t even close with the Fujis either
I also got my ZF this week, I wanted to upgrade from xe4 because the small viewfinder bothered me and I was looking at Xt5 but I was able to get ZF for 225 euros cheaper, so I decided to switch to ZF. I didn't have time to mess with nikon color profiles, as of now I still prefer shooting experience on fuji with aperture rings on lenses, film simulations and the way the dials work.
but but but... all cameras produce the same raws and its all about the person editing the file! it can be made to look like any other camera! -sarcasm-
I sold all my Fuji gear when the ZF released. After almost a year and taking it to a few trips. The only issue that I have it’s the weight but it is a full frame camera so it was expected. It’s a beast of a camera for enthusiasts
People switch camera brands, just to realize it’s not the camera it’s the photographer who’s making all the magic. Get yourself a used full frame camera and start creating! Work on your skills and not megapixels 😊
Interesting, I just brought an XT5, but i was almost going to get the ZF, i had them both in my hand at a camera store. ZF was on special at the same price as XT5, both with kits. I went fuji in the end for the exact opposite opinion which you gave as a negative: The Fuji lenses are smaller, lighter AND cheaper! Its true that Nikon has comparable prices for some lenses when you factor sensor/aperture equivalence but, outside of the lenses designed for ZF and the other lower range ones, they are bigger bulkier and more expensive than the Fuji counter part (telephoto zooms a point in case) and if we are throwing in Sigmas with adaptors for ZF affordability then we must also acknowledge the new range of Viltrox which are cheap and very good. Not to mention Sigmas native to Fuji. Having said all that, i still wonder if i made the right choice as i loved the ZF, and no one is brushing aside the auto focus issue on Fujis, heres hoping its finally resolved in next firmware. I should note my perspective is from travel and street photography perspective but also telephoto for some wildlife (travel AND wildlife for full frame means big heavy lenses) Anyway, great video, thanks for your thoughts
One has to understand that comparing optical quality of lenses of a similar focal length on a high MP sensor (speaking of XF) that there is a decade of difference in their release and what they were optically compatible with at the time. The old 16mm f1.4 was made for 16 and 24MP sensors a decade ago where the 18mm f1.4 was made to accommodate a 26+ MP resolution. Having said that, I have moved back to Nikon from eleven years with Fuji based on my experiences with photography for 45 years and what each tool gives me. I am keeping a couple X-Trans III cameras and older lenses for that variety only Fuji can give me. The newer bodies are just like any other camera these days and I believe sensor features have hit a plateau practically speaking and ANY camera can pretty much give you the same results generally. Unless you are a Pro with specific needs it becomes a waist of money buying the newest and spec sheet greatest expensive camera.
Ok where to start... The ZF is great camera, but why do you compare a FF with an APSC, why not the Nikon ZFC ? Right because Fuji has the best APSC sensors on the market. Of course it's not better than a FF ( just like the old Fuji GFX 50R image beat the crap out of the ZF ) I agree while Fuji film sims are great, you can get also great color from the Nikon raw ( but no, not with their limited profile tool, film sims are dynamic not linear, its not just a filter ) Btw in EU the ZF is much more expensive (2500€ at launch, 2200€ now vs 1700€ XT5, 1000€ ZFC ) On build construction, the XT5 is full magnesium alloy !! no plastic !! but it's true that the new cheap paint formula they just introduced is absolutely afwul ! ( it's the primer layer you see beneath, an acrylic polymer > kind of plastic ) Did you have in hand a XT2 or even better a XH1 ( my favorite ) in hand ? Beefy tank just like the ZF. All GFX are top notch quality also. Even cheap XE3 felt good quality with solid thick top metal plate and superbe hard clicky dial wheels. Since the XT3 the quality is going downhill, worse XT5 is no longer the flagship (but the cow money $$), the build is just too cheap for that expensive price.( didn't buy it because of that, XH2 is a much better deal) Since the new CEO early 2021, they really cut the corners and play on scarcity but reap the fruits and make tons of money. I' don't like that new politic. Hope the X pro 4 will have a premium build at least... Now the lenses where you are really not fair. There's the old first gen f/1.4 and the last gen f/1.4, all manufacturers have lens rotation. The XF33 f/1.4 is more expensive than the Nikkor 50 1.4 because of the metallic build, the classic aperture ring and the linear motor ( vs cheaper STM ) and greater glass, it is waaay sharper ! actually more like the Nikkor 50 1.8 S that is also more expensive than the Nikkor 50 1.4 really an average lens at best ( strange new marketing from Nikon ) Then you introduce adaptators and Sigma lens VS OEM Fuji lens ! ( also those price... ) WTF ?? there are also third party lens on X mount, a lot !! Your comparison is not fair and misleading. Why so much Fuji hate ? I guess it's for the buzz... Zf is great, just wish it had at least 45mp, a true double SD, a joystick and tilt screen. May still buy one, but i'm more on the GFX right now, once you tasted the MF greatness it's hard to come back 😍( adapted Sigma 85 f/1.4 becomes a 67 f/1.1, affordable, super sharp and covers the whole sensor, works with plenty other lens ) NB: btw the there's a Fuji X to Nikon Z adaptator also, and it doesn't force the DX mode you can stay in FX and enjoy a 1.3X crop with lens profile corrections, on 5/4 ratio 1.2X crop you can still get near 20mpx , nice ! (depends on the X lens of course )
I also thought the comparison would have been fair if Fuji original lenses were compared against Nikon original lenses of the equivalent focal length and aperture considering the crop factor.
After seeing it I actually tend more to buy the Fuji - In the end it’s always a pro / con situation, but what matters the most are the results. From the photo comparison in the videos I way more liked the softness, colors and rendering of the Fuji camera and coming from full frame Sony alpha, Canon R, I learned that there is always a difference in colors and rendering no matter how skilled one is with editing 🙂. Great Video 👍🏻.
I would disagree completely about the 1.4 lenses. You mentioned the 16 1.4, that's one of the oldest Fuji lenses. It's considered an original lineup lens. The new lenses are the 18 1.4, 23 1.4, 33 1.4, 56 1.2, and these are all a series of modern lenses that look and function almost identically. So if you're looking for a fast prime you can confidently buy any of the new 1.4 lenses and know they look and act the same. Just my thoughts. the nikon looks like a nice setup though too ..
I think how a camera feels in the hand partly has to do with what you think it is made of. That's because the Fuji parts he said are made of plastic are actually magnesium alloy just like the Nikon. I don't care about Fuji, but I guess he didn't know the X-Tx cameras are fully weather sealed metal bodies.
One hold of the Nikon ZF and I knew i wasnt going to ditch my X-T5. It felt like a brick. The full frame benefit is minimal, mostly unnoticable and even so youd pay the cost in size of lenses/body. Fuji have a vast variety of native glass which wont break the bank and they perform exceptionally. If the Nikon AF is your priority youre most likely shooting wildlife or sport so you'd be getting a proper full frame camera with much better ergonomics to support your Zoom lenses, not the ZF.
IMO, the big supertele lenses don't suffer on the Zf at all. Most of the weight is on the supporting hand (or the tripod/monopod), so the grip doesn't matter. It's mid-size lenses that suffer the most.
full frame benefit is minimal? are you joking ? hahahaha .. thats why i sell my fuji because of that apsc performance + slow AF that is so frustrating to use on portrait shoot specially outdoor and low light..i have been a fuji user for 7 years then sold all my fuji gears for the ZF, and its a game changer ahahaha
@@jplivelo6965 Yes it's minimal if you know how to use a camera. 99.9% of people would not know the difference of what camera you're using. There are plenty of professionals including myself that use Fujifilm for work without AF issues. If you had issues it's probably you, not the camera.
@@michamilka ohhh really? But i do use it for professional work also and it fails me a lot of times because of its af performance and poor low light performance🙂
The Zf is superior in most areas, but you left some key aspects out from the strengths of the X-T5: - It has two USH-II SD card slots, meaning you have better redundancy. - It has the 40MP sensor, meaning effectively more resolution. - This can be subjective but the screen of the X-T5 is much better for photography. And about the lenses, it's not ideal to adapt lenses from other mounts for peak performance, and in this sense, Nikon has been dropping the ball with lenses aimed to the Zf/Zfc. Part of what makes Fujifilm so amazing as a retro-experience camera is that most of it's lenses have aperture rings. And yes, 3rd party lenses for Z mount will have these, but usually you still get better rendering from OEM lenses. As other stated, some lenses are better suited for the less demanding MP sensors. The Viltrox f/1.2 duo, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 and the new trio of XF f/1.4 lenses are better for the X-T5. At the end of the day, either choice is good as long as you are aware of it's pros and cons. But truth be told, Fuji needs to get their sh*t together and invest money in fixing their AF tracking algorithms.
As someone who shot Fuji for 6 years, I had to make this same choice. Fujifilm was priced really well compared to full-frame stuff at first, but then people went nuts over the brand and Fuji just kept hiking their prices higher and higher. I found myself looking at full-frame options that gave me better value and better quality. Yeah, I miss those film sims, but I'm not gonna reward a company that's just cashing in on the Fuji hype. Add in all those firmware problems and that whole mess? There's just no reason to drop money on an X-T5 right now when you can get a ZF for just a bit more, plus grab some solid lenses without breaking the bank. Fuji's really shooting themselves in the foot here. People are jumping ship left and right, and they're being way too slow to wake up and deal with it. Those prices are gonna have to come down eventually.
II’ve got a Sony, Nikon and Fuji system too and agree with your summary of the two cameras. Sounds like little reason to keep the Fuji? What convinced you to move to the system from Sony in the first place? I scaled my Fuji system right back to the xt30ii and 35mm f1.4. I only keep it for the size and apparently unique rendering, which is good if I just want to shoot jpeg. However the a7cr with the Sigma I series primes is just as small.
Hi..I got Sony and Fuji tool..I started with Nikon DSLRs and used to shoot jpegs with my D750.Never realized Nikon has good colors until I switched to Sony for autofocus. Though Fuji is good on the colors. but the hype of ZF and Z8 had me thinking if I should get a Nikon as well...What do you think?Do your Nikon and Sony get similar results when shooting raw? Thanks.
I was looking for a perfect travel camera but did not realise I had it with me all that time. I own Fujifilm X-T5, Leica Q2 and Nikon ZF (don't ask :) ) When starting the travel my biggest pain is to choose which camera to take. Fuji being tecnicaly inferior, but I just cannot leave it at home, impossible, alwas miss it. Q2 is great, probably the best travel camera for 99% of people, but it is too expensive and I am really more 35mm (in FF terms) shooter. ZF is, on paper, the best camera out of those 3, but as mentioned in video, grip is terrible, it is heavy and at the end images are not so much better then the ones that came out of Fuji, expecially if you just archive it or use it for social media. Long story short: X-T5 + Mitakon 35mm f0.95 + Sirui 23mm f1.2 + Sigma 10-18mm f2.8 fit in Peak Design 6L bag is for me the best travel combo. But... to be honest, I love my Q2. I "hate" ZF because it is "better" then Fuji which I just love, no matter the technical inferiority.
Can Nikon do film sims? I will take those over better autofocus. I don't want to color grade or edit. If Nikon can match the colors of fuji jpegs, then I am all in. Maybe I didn't know how to use the ZF, but in my opinion the colors can't match Fuji straight out of camera, so I sent it back. But I am an amateur only and have no need of pro camera features.
Yeah Nikon have film sims but I haven’t tried and from what I’ve heard and seen they aren’t as good as fujifilm I think learning to edit is a great skill but not necessarily
Can you please talk more in depth about using the E-mount lenses to the ZF? how is it compared to the native Z lenses. I'm really like the lens design and size of that sigma I series but the adapter is not cheap and worried about the quality and autofocus if it's on par with the Z lenses. I really hope that someday Sigma will release these lenses to the Z mount. I'm sure they'll be a hit. Thanks
I've been with Fuji since 2016, they are good. I enjoy them, yet...for my professional work, I still shoot with the T3 and I just haven't been able to get myself to upgrade due to still present freezing issues (even on flagship cameras), and no real increased AF issues, ESPECIALLY for the video work I do. Seriously looking at Nikon as Panasonic and Capture One haven't chatted to finally allow me to shoot tethered into Capture One natively. Sadly, Fuji seems to have lost their way a bit.
The ZF is a BANGER of a camera. Truly unbeatable if you can grab one on refurb sale from Nikon or lightly used. How do you find your Anarogu presets work with the ZF? I've had to totally redo all my Fuji-era presets for the ZF just due to the radical differences in the sensors.
I was looking at your presets, because I really like your colors, but when looking at each pack, in the before/after examples pictures, you use the same photos in all 3 preset packs. With the same after look. It’s very confusing because I don’t know what look will I get with each preset pack. If I could have seen appropriate before/after for each preset pack, I would probably would have bought them.
Thanks for the video. My Zf will arrive tomorrow and complement my Fuji X-T5 (and X100VI). I am not really unhappy with the X-T5. I am simply curious and I want to compare by myself. (Had Nikon in the past, but never used full frame digital cameras before.) In the end I am going to decide between the cameras and systems ...
The "megadapted" Sigma lenses sound like a good idea, but in practice AF performance is actually pretty lame. The adapter introduces a delay which the camera's AF doesn't know how to account for. Lots of out of focus images with moving subjects. I tried the same setup, but eventually I sold the ZF and bought a Sony A7 IV, which works much better: it has excellent ergonomics, AF is awesome and the Sigma I lenses work awesome with it. Aside from the megadapter sub par AF, the Nikon Zf has really clunky ergonomics, to the point that focusing becomes a hurdle as the camera is so awkward to handle.
Been thinking about upgrading from xt4 to zf, but the lenses are holding me back. The Nikon 35 1.4 got bad reviews, also the 50 1.4 is cheaper then their own 501.8s, so how good can it be? The fuji 33 1.4 is a amazing and sharp lens in my opinion. Your suggestion is to get the Sigma 50 f2 lens, which is the same size and field of view and depht of field as the fuji considering the crop factor. but then whats the point in using the bigger zf with the bigger sensor?
The Nikkor f1.4 lenses are not supposed to be as good as their f1.8s. Also, why they are cheaper. The f1.8 lenses (called S lenses) are Nikons top of the pop, super sharp wide open even in the corners, with very little chromatic aberration or flair or what have you. The f1.4 lenses are not like that. Not as sharp wide open and soft in the corners, and with just enough chromatic aberration, flair and vignetting, to give the lenses "old lens vibe" character, which modern day MILC lenses sometimes lag. The Nikkor f1.8 lenses are like fine vine. The Nikkor f1.4 are a beer.
@@Elimnio “What’s the point”? you get bigger biceps from carrying the extra weight, lol. You are right through the XF56 F1.2 WR will give you the exact same look as the Z 85 F1.8 S, the Fuji is smaller and sharper, but the Nikon is cheaper. Going full frame is only worth it for F1.4 and F1.2 but sharp lenses that fast are very expensive, often very big, and only rarely needed unless you really like taking images of a blur with a few eyelashes sticking out of it.
Nikons lens pricing is insane. The S lenses are their premium line, the 1.4 lenses are the budget line. Sold my xf 18, 23, 33/1.4 already, as Fujifilm is unable to fix their crappy AF system.
Fuji user for 8 years, previously had Nikon's for about the same length of time. The ZF is the better camera and would last a lifetime. I would love to buy a one but there are no decent native lenses that match the camera so cannot commit to that. I think Fuji are more than good enough for most people and their lenses are fantastic. Their prices, especially camera bodies are too much in comparison though and they are reducing the build quality. I've never bought one at full price for this reason.
I never used the XT5, so I can't say anything about it. However, I think the sensor on the ZF is really good. When I print photo's on the ZF, it looks like film. It has a classic, old school kind of look. To me, that's everything, That said, the ZF is not a perfect camera. It has its downsides.
Love my new ZF, came from Fuji and Canon and I'm happy with this thing. I was considering the MegaDap but was a little nervous about it's reliability. Have you used the adapter in inclement weather at all? I'm afraid it'll get fried with a little humidity. Great video.
@ best is it to try. I got a A7IV, Display is okay for me. The EVF is really good, but much better than the one on the A7CII. What I really don’t like is the small handgrip on the a7C.
I think if you want a great quality 50mm for your ZF the 50mm F1.8 from nikon is superior, even if indeed it don't have a retro style ^^ the F1.8 S line are pretty impressive in term of sharpness.
One major thing that needs to be reiterated is 100% fuji is behind on af however it's miles ahead of what we were shooting intense gigs on with our dslrs lol
Okay. I am seeing a lot o hatred towards Fuji these days mainly blaming the auto focus. Most of these are comparing with Nikon Zf. I have been a Nikon user for 10 years before switching to Fujifilm a few years ago. I enjoy my current XT-5 (XT-3 earlier) and I am forever thankful to Fuji for letting me enjoy photography because I know my camera so well now. P.S. - There is a similar pattern with GoPros in the name of low light performance.
Hmm, I am still exploring camera options. Right now I have Fuji XT50 and I fell like I want even smaller camera. Ricoh GR3 looks really attractive. Sony A7C is fine but I don’t consider any camera that is bigger or weighs more than my current one. None of the things like quality, price or AF matter to me if I stop using camera at all.
Here i can get Zf and Z7 II for the same price, I want to pair with their 28-400mm f4-8, do it able to resolve the 45mp of the Z7 II and do the extra megapixel worth it to document life and art style of shooting, 45mp doesn't mean 2X the noticeable resolution of 24mp right? I want to wrap the Zf in yellow, is it possible to make Z7 II in yellow colour and will it looks good?
Honestly sounds like you're getting ready to blow thousands on gear you're a long way off being able to utilize. Pick up a cheap second hand DSLR first.
The Nikon ZF is a keeper, and im glad I didn't have to sell a lot of Fuji gear to obtain this amazing camera. No regrets selling the XT5. It just didnt inspire me. Selling my Xpro3 hurts though. It would be hard to justify keeping my ZF and owning a Xpro4 when it comes out.
His older videos praise xt5, now just to upsell nikon, xt5 is now inferior. While what is said may b true its just a simple business to upsell products to gein commission
By the way folks… the Fuji 16mm 1.4 is absolutely stellar. And quite possibly one of the best in the range. Worth it for the incredible close focusing alone. Consistently gives me my best shots.
Excellent comparison. I enjoyed the video. My only question is why do you still have the Fuji? you find the Nikon superior in almost every category so what is the use case for the x t5? Keep up the good work!
He needs cameras for youtube content, obviously. People love to hate, Fujifilm cameras are perfect for that today (they're actually great, especially if you don't want to carry around a bulky brick with shitty plastic Nikon lenses)
@ thanks for taking the time to respond to me. Your explanation makes sense. I have the xt5 and love it. I get both in and out of focus results but mostly the images are just fine and the colors are wonderful. I laughed as I listened to the camera comparison which I thought would end with “so I’m selling the Fuji” but then heard that he also really likes the fuji. I thought it was strange.
@@stuartsilverman3797 I have the x-t5 as well. I would totally agree that full frame cameras are better if I were a professional and I had to constantly use heavy cameras with huge lenses to live. But I'm not a professional and that's why I love Fujifilm. I can always throw the camera in my backpack with a couple of lenses, and not necessarily expensive and heavy (for apc-s) f/1.4 lenses that for some reason people like to compare cheap plastic full frame lenses to. If I take a photo that day - that's great, if I don't get my camera out of my backpack - I don't care, it's not like I've been carrying a heavy Nikon all day.
is it good for street photography? all the comments are raving about the Zf but are these mainly studio type photogrpahers or is it also good for street. ofc any camers is good for street even a cell phone but I already own a Nikon and have many prime lenses just curious if people are using it for that or if the fujji cams are an option. also, does the zf have a good monochrome option.
No one ever talks about how amazing the BW switch is. You have so many picture controls(recipes) built in. When you hit the switch, it only shows your BW recipes.
If you're walking around all day shooting street photography then weight is a prime concern and lighter is always better. Shooting models or in the studio, weight is much less of a factor.
Both of these cameras need a new generation. X-T6 needs to be all metal and have better autofocus. ZF II needs higher resolution, to be smaller and have a screen like the one on the A7R V. Nikon also needs lenses like the ones you are adapting with aperture rings and a retro 80s aesthetic to match the camera. I’m not switching from Fuji just yet. It will be interesting if Canon do a retro camera. The A1 is my favourite film camera (I’ve got most brands) and if they do something like that or the AE1 with FD style lenses it could be really good.
Why in the hell does the nikon Zf need more resolution? It is perfect how it is, because it will get worse low light and bigger files when you add more resolution. I never need more than 24mp. Maybe bring out a Nikon zfr. But please not up the res of the nikon Zf itself. But yes, we need some more lenses, but they are coming.
@ I know what you are saying but the same argument could have been made about 24MP being too high at one point, and it’s fine. Nobody thinks the Z8 is bad at 45MP or the X-T5 at 40MP. Others have as high as 60 or 100. These sizes would have been totally impractical a few years ago, but computers get faster and storage gets cheaper. It’s all relative. Personally I think it’s better to have the option to crop or scale down. I mainly shoot 35mm film, so I understand not everything is about resolution, but if I’m going to spend thousands on a full frame camera and super sharp lenses it might as well work to its full potential.
@@jwbarsby as i Need multiple backups, Storage can be pretty damn expensive. Currently already paying around 25 Euros a Month for cloud and paying for a nas too and i am already again more than half way through my capacity and all my images are around 24 or now also in 32mp. No sir, i will Not Go above the 32mp of my Sony a7cii. It is unnecessary and i can do a lot of very intense cropping with 32mp. Which i used maybe 2-3 times in about the last 10k Images. And then the photos weren‘t that good in the end. I Never was in the Need for more than 30mp and i think that 40mp for an apsc cam is too much. Waste of money. Maybe with the Leica approach it could make sense, but even then, I would mostly not use it. And it is also one of the reasons why image quality in video mode is so bad on the xt5. It is the same with lenses. You can carry to every shoot a 16-35, 24-70, 70-200,... And also some fast primes like 24,35,50,85 just in case to make every possible photo at every time. It is maybe some exaggeration, but at some point you have to concentrate on strengehts and not prepare on any eventuality that comes along. Maybe you just shoot stuff with the wrong focal length? I am good with missing a shot sometimes, but concentrate on the real epic ones that I am prepared for.
@@flol3266 When I’m shooting film I’ve got 36 shots at a time and storage is a folder for the negs I’ve developed and a box for my darkroom prints lol. Even when I’m shooting digital I only keep the images I really like. What’s the point of storing hundreds of thousands of just ok images I’m never going to look at again? The really good ones sure, but I only need a couple of TB for those.
In your graphic comparing the price of the systems you show a Fujifilm 90mm F1.4 but this is a 90mm F2. Also this 90 mm is closer to 135 so maybe using the 56 mm instead to compare with the sigma 90 would’ve been a better option. 56mm is still $1K though lol
If you can, it would be cool to see a real world comparison between the Zfc and Zf. I love the Zfc for its weight but haven’t tried the Zf yet to see the differences.
Almost same here with the difference that the Fujifilm stuff is not sold yet and will stay here for comparison. X-T5 and X100VI (I like both very much) are waiting for the full frame buddy. I am so curious. But I am also a bit afraid that I "need" to keep both systems ...
That's a great video and a good comparison. But I have to say that these cameras are very different and not on the same level. The X-T5 is one of Fuji's best cameras, whereas the Nikon Zf isn't. I have been using Canon my whole life and I decided to move to Fuji 4 years ago, because I was not happy with the size of the Canon cameras and the price (I had the 1DX 3). And I need to say that I don't regret my decision at all. Fuji allowed me to take my camera everywhere and see things differently. I started enjoying photography. Yes, we have autofocus issues, but they are trying to fix this now. And for those who have compared Nikon photos to other camera brands, we know that green and red are slightly off tone on Nikon. That's just my opinion.
I have a gfx and xpro2 and i mostly shoot film. It might be another fuji for me, xt5 or whoever next. Nikon is amazing but i have an Canon 6D collecting dust i might resurrect
Has anybody here tried the Voightlander Z lenses with the Zf? I think they're manual focus only but for street photography that would be good. I'm trying to decide between a used Leica Q and the Zf and they will be used only for street. Thanks to anybody who can share.
I own quite a few Z lenses like the Z 28mm, Z 40mm but the lenses that always seem to always make it onto my camera would be the Voigtlander 50mm f/1 and the 40mm f/1.2. I also love the Tamron 35-150mm for its stellar performance and versatility.
There are many different types of photographer, If you are mainly a studio professional photographer then the weight of the camera and lens probably isn't that critical. If you carry your camera for a length of time (landscape or street) then weight may assume greater importance. If you are a professional then your needs are probably different from the non professional. I am friendly with an ex professional who now only shoots with his iphone and still takes great photos. This video only compares one camera from the Fuji range. I don't have an XT5 so can only go on the videos I have watched which do indicate that under certain conditions the AF is poor. I have 4 older Fuji cameras (XS10, XH1, XT1 & XE3), do not shoot video or sports and find the Fuji's very suitable for my non professional needs, certainly zero AF issues. The Fuji cameras I have are fun and do the job. I'm sure Nikons will also do the job, but a slightly different one. So, of course, it's as always, horses for courses. I doubt whether this video or any other will convince me I need to change brand or even upgrade within the Fuji brand.
I have seen a lot of hate towards Fuji these days and I think there are good reasons for that. From the past 3 years thanks to the hype from YT and social medias Fuji created a bubble around their cameras. They put a high price tag on their cameras and sold film simulations and retro design as the ultimate features for people to get inspired go out and shoot. But now people are realizing that Fuji’s cameras compare with others brand like Sony, Canon or Nikon are not working well and they have many issues, specially in AF department which is dealbreaker and that’s not fun anymore. Others systems are better value for money, they can have fun, get the same shooting experience and on top of that they just do the job as any camera from the past 10 years should be. Honestly I feel really relieved for not having invested on Fuji’s cameras. Their strongs always feel like gimmick to me. Although I can understand why people love Fuji’s cameras specially the youngest
I've been hunting down all the Sigma I-Series F2 primes and have managed to find all of them used for about $300-425 (complete in box, like new condition). Currently I have the 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 65mm f2's and the 90mm f2.8. My favorites being the 24 and the 65. Fantastic build quality and pair significantly better with the A7C range than 1.4 primes. Highly recommend.
As long as we do post process, color is really not that important, only lazy people are seeking for SOOC photos. I also agree that Nikon or any brand out there do their amazing job with LUT, but they never consider the importance of other effect like grain, clarity, vignette like Fuji does
You might be right in comparing features, but you are also cherry picking. Comparing prices with 3rd party options using adapters on one system and native on the other isn't fair. Fuji is using more plastic, but in a lighter ergonomic body without the need to buy a extra grip to just hold the camera. IQ isn't that much of a deal either. A bit more dynamic range, 1 stop better ISO isn't a make or break these days. I think Fuji's prices are a bit high, the rest is spot on for the purpose, consumer travel cameras.
if colour science is not a thing then why your Nikon photos have orange skin (as usual for Nikon)? :P no hate, just everytime I see portraits with Nikon or Sony, it's that orange coloured unnatural skin tones that are disturbing my eyes. I do have friends who shoot pro on Sony, and they do agree that it's a bit of work to get the skin tones right. With Fuji, it's a one click solution setting the film sim to anything except for classic neg.
I do not even own a X-T5, but it took me just one minute to find out that your information is just wrong. X-T5 has magnesium body also the top plate is magnesium. Why not doing a minimum of research before posting a video and spreading wrong information, sorry. The nikon just feels more substantial because its heavier.
Definitely looks, feels and wears like plastic mate, and that’s from owning one for the last 11 months coming from a ex engineer who worked with composite and metal materials. So yeah that’s right you don’t own one lol 😂
@@gerardneedham You've only got to touch the tip of your tongue to the various surfaces and components on the XT-5 to see they are metal. Try it, then try it on plastic - a huge difference in temperature perception as metal conducts heat away far more readily than plastic. I do own an XT-5 and don't lick it regularly though :-)
No, Fuji hates you that's why they gave you firmware that make your camera worse. Also, you want to buy their camera? yeah good luck, try secondhand instead for double the price. Because Fuji also limiting their inventories.
Fuji made me switch to Nikon for their garbage firmwares and autofocus. So yes I will hate them. Because outside of those issues I enjoyed my Fuji cameras. But they are serious issues that got in the way of professional and even casual use. People should hate on them more, because maybe they'll actually do something besides limiting their inventories and releasing broken firmwares to people who pay thousands for their cameras.
@@lafandagastroushious6664 Then the X-T6 will come out, perhaps with amazing autofocus, and everyone will be buying that and doing videos about it. This is how gas and consumerism works.

It is a bit odd you compare Fuji's 16mm and 18mm AF and sharpness performance given their age difference, really... I wouldn't agree about the Nikon having much better lens selection... You must be kidding about that too... Man...I was really liking your channel... What happened??? ))
I feel people complain about ergo simply because they need to complain about something, if anything. That's how good ZF camera is. Like the S9 is such a crap camera spec wise, you never hear a single person complain it's ergo.
Gerard, I usually enjoy your channel, but this comparison is flawed, TBH. If you want to compare the Fuji XT5, it should be with the Nikon Zfc APSC camera. Of course the Zf as FF camera will outperform the Fuji in terms of noise levels and 3D pop. Also, it is fairly bizarre to use non-native Sigma lenses with a Sony adaptor (!) as a comparison against the native Fuji lens line-up. What the hell. Also, you state that Fuji's lenses in terms of IQ are "all over the place" and compare the 16mm f/1.4 against the 18mm f/1.4. But the 18mm f/1.4 is much, much newer (just like the 33mm f/1.4); the 16mm is really an old lens. The new lenses (I have them all) are fantastic; razor sharp and very consistent as to IQ and color rendering. Also, there are made mostly of metal, which is certainly not the case for the third party lenses you mention. I notice you mention a Fuji 90mm f/1.4, which does not even exist; the 90mm is an f/2.0 lens. As to AF performance: yes, the Nikon performs better, but you make its sound like Fuji is practically unuseable. My son is a professional photographer and videographer and shoots video with an XHS and stills with an XT5 of fast moving subjects like high-performance cars is action, and he hardly has any misfires (nor have I, for that matter). He tested the Nikon Zf and although its AF indeed was better, the difference was too small to justify switching to a different system. Also, the Zf is heavy and unwieldy with its small grip and the fact that it has one card slot is not exactly a bonus point either. Of course, if you prefer the Nikon Zf, that's totally cool, but I think the presentation should have been more balanced.
Really liked your video, it's to the point. One thing so, sometimes the background music got REALLY annoying to my ears. Might just be me, but you just don't need background music in my opinion.
Photos from Fuji cameras look always the same color wise, no matter which photographer uses it, it always look like Fuji and I am tired of it. Film Sims are so overrated and I can produce same colors with my nikon or Sony if I want. In fact I have a ton of presets to match colors with classic film or Fuji film Sims, but I rarely use it.
Every camera can achieve beautiful images without post processing. There is nothing ground breaking there. You can even do film Sims with Sony in cam, it is just a bit harder with the picture profiles. But nikon has even more possibilities than Fuji. They just did an enormous marketing job to let people think, it is better. And sell them apsc gear for full frame prices...
@@flol3266i agree with you. Any camera can be used to create great images. Fuji used to be very competitive with the FF when I bought my X-T3 (and I still have one). Canon was criticised for AF tech and people even accused they were giving poor bodies for the price the pays for. (In the 5D4 era). There are great photographers who shoot m4/3s. Fuji has so many cameras in X mount and the OEM and 3rd party lens selection might not be as vast as Canon or Nikon. But, has more well performing lenses at reasonably lesser price than the FF equivalent and covers pretty much every focal length out there. Hybrid shooters, MF assist features for vintage lenses shooters and they even offer built in intervelometer function for stackers. I agree the modern Fuji bodies like the X-T5 and XH2S aren't so much compelling enough for the asking price.
I use a GFX 100s ii and it's brilliant my XT5 is my walk about camera. I still get goof results from Fujifilm XT5 about 80% hit rate 24 megapixels is disappointing in 2024

@ I was actually just joking. I have Nikon and Sony. I came close to Fuji, but decided not to do another camera system. Color science is whatever Adobe decides it is if you use photoshop. As a diehard Fujifilm user (16+ bodies and counting), The minute the ZF was announced it was an instant pre-order for me. Been using it for over a year now and I'm still in love with it.
Did you sell off the Fuji kit as a result?
@@jamesk7777 I have now only the XPro2 and GFX50SII as those are a lot less redundant than the Zf.

Interesting, I just brought an XT5, but i was almost going to get the ZF, i had them both in my hand at a camera store. ZF was on special at the same price as XT5, both with kits.
I went fuji in the end for the exact opposite opinion which you gave as a negative:
The Fuji lenses are smaller, lighter AND cheaper!
I should note my perspective is from travel and street photography perspective but also telephoto for some wildlife (travel AND wildlife for full frame means big heavy lenses)
Anyway, great video, thanks for your thoughts
Of course it's not better than a FF ( just like the old Fuji GFX 50R image beat the crap out of the ZF ) I agree while Fuji film sims are great, you can get also great color from the Nikon raw ( but no, not with their limited profile tool, film sims are dynamic not linear, its not just a filter ) Btw in EU the ZF is much more expensive (2500€ at launch, 2200€ now vs 1700€ XT5, 1000€ ZFC )
On build construction, the XT5 is full magnesium alloy !! no plastic !! but it's true that the new cheap paint formula they just introduced is absolutely afwul !
May still buy one, but i'm more on the GFX right now, once you tasted the MF greatness it's hard to come back 😍( adapted Sigma 85 f/1.4 becomes a 67 f/1.1, affordable, super sharp and covers the whole sensor, works with plenty other lens )
NB: btw the there's a Fuji X to Nikon Z adaptator also, and it doesn't force the DX mode you can stay in FX and enjoy a 1.3X crop with lens profile corrections, on 5/4 ratio 1.2X crop you can still get near 20mpx , nice ! (depends on the X lens of course )
I have the xt5 and it feels way less premium than my old xt2... it is like it is
I also thought the comparison would have been fair if Fuji original lenses were compared against Nikon original lenses of the equivalent focal length and aperture considering the crop factor.
Do a print from both, and you won’t see a difference.
Great Video 👍🏻.
the softness, the grains, the out of focus...Fuji is the best.
If you need reliable AF, Fujifilm is a bad choice.
Right, I heard that part and was like the 16 is old af and the 18 is one of their new lenses 😂
Just sold all my Fuji gear last week and I’m holding a ZF now. No regrets at all!
😂😂😂 thanks I feel so much better for knowing.
The full frame benefit is minimal ? 🤣
full frame benefit is minimal? are you joking ? hahahaha .. thats why i sell my fuji because of that apsc performance + slow AF that is so frustrating to use on portrait shoot specially outdoor and low light..i have been a fuji user for 7 years then sold all my fuji gears for the ZF, and its a game changer ahahaha
The Zf is superior in most areas, but you left some key aspects out from the strengths of the X-T5:
- It has two USH-II SD card slots, meaning you have better redundancy.
Where can I get the information on all the people jumping ship? I haven't seen it.
Literally my two favorite cameras at the moment. No one will take them away from me
II’ve got a Sony, Nikon and Fuji system too and agree with your summary of the two cameras.
Thanks.
the top and bottom plates on the X-T5 or magnesium.
I was looking for a perfect travel camera but did not realise I had it with me all that time.
I own Fujifilm X-T5, Leica Q2 and Nikon ZF (don't ask :) )
When starting the travel my biggest pain is to choose which camera to take.
Long story short:
X-T5 + Mitakon 35mm f0.95 + Sirui 23mm f1.2 + Sigma 10-18mm f2.8 fit in Peak Design 6L bag is for me the best travel combo.
But... to be honest, I love my Q2.
Yeah Nikon have film sims but I haven’t tried and from what I’ve heard and seen they aren’t as good as fujifilm
I think learning to edit is a great skill but not necessarily
Yeah Fuji is price gauging and people can see it
What about printing at larger sizes? How does the 26mp FF compare to the 40mp APSC?
Nice video, Gerard. I’d like to see a future video where you explore the Nikon picture controls more in-depth.
А я приобрёл XT5 отличный фотоаппарат . Есть 3 обьектива . Класс! Ещё раньше у меня XT20 . Приобрёл тушку XT5 и балдею!!!

Still a comparison ?
Which.lenses are you using on the ZF?
By the way folks… the Fuji 16mm 1.4 is absolutely stellar. And quite possibly one of the best in the range. Worth it for the incredible close focusing alone.
Consistently gives me my best shots.
You can attach all the lens with adapter to xt5
@@mikhailkhromov464 excellent thoughts. I have had several fujis and , for me, they work just fine and I will contest to use them
is it good for street photography? all the comments are raving about the Zf but are these mainly studio type photogrpahers or is it also good for street. ofc any camers is good for street even a cell phone but I already own a Nikon and have many prime lenses just curious if people are using it for that or if the fujji cams are an option. also, does the zf have a good monochrome option.
No one ever talks about how amazing the BW switch is. You have so many picture controls(recipes) built in. When you hit the switch, it only shows your BW recipes.
If you're walking around all day shooting street photography then weight is a prime concern and lighter is always better. Shooting models or in the studio, weight is much less of a factor.
yes its perfect for street i use fuji for street for a lonngg time but sold it for ZF and yes zf has better monochrome with a on the fly switch

Why not use the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 on the Zf. It’s insane.
Yeah I thought about that but that sigma 90mm is such a good deal, you can also shot the ZF in APSC mode to get a 135mm
you'd lose a ton of pixels when you shoot on crop mode.
Shoutout to the models! Fantastic.
Thanks! I love working with them.
If you can, it would be cool to see a real world comparison between the Zfc and Zf. I love the Zfc for its weight but haven’t tried the Zf yet to see the differences.
Used to shoot purely with Fuji X100s & X-Ts, but sold them all. Ordered my Zf yesterday I cannot wait to have it in my hands.
Almost same here with the difference that the Fujifilm stuff is not sold yet and will stay here for comparison. X-T5 and X100VI (I like both very much) are waiting for the full frame buddy. I am so curious. But I am also a bit afraid that I "need" to keep both systems ...
@ Ah yes … the dreaded ‘need’ 😁
Bought the Zf after your last video on it and I love it!
If you don't want to edit your photos ... Fuji is the camera to choose.
man can wait for that color science video
Has anybody here tried the Voightlander Z lenses with the Zf? I think they're manual focus only but for street photography that would be good. I'm trying to decide between a used Leica Q and the Zf and they will be used only for street. Thanks to anybody who can share.
I own quite a few Z lenses like the Z 28mm, Z 40mm but the lenses that always seem to always make it onto my camera would be the Voigtlander 50mm f/1 and the 40mm f/1.2. I also love the Tamron 35-150mm for its stellar performance and versatility.
@@WatchmanNiel Thanks a lot for your reply.
The Fujifilm costs more because WR lens is weather sealed. Compare it with an S Nikkor lens.
I do wish Nikon would throw in their 45 megapixel sensor in the ZF, or at least a secondary version with that sensor.
Thanks for the video but today's sponsor is Nikon :-)))
I might sell the 90mm, because I just snagged a deal on the 105mm 2.8 macro. Going to play around with both and see which I like better.
You have to try the techart tzm02 on the ZF
As long as we do post process, color is really not that important, only lazy people are seeking for SOOC photos. I also agree that Nikon or any brand out there do their amazing job with LUT, but they never consider the importance of other effect like grain, clarity, vignette like Fuji does
Commitment issues much?
The truth is that the image quality of the XT5 is on par with all full frames on the market and only the GFX can top it all.
My short fingers could never…. 😂
Ahahahahahah someone has stolen my Fuji BTW everyone @mjcarneiro
if colour science is not a thing then why your Nikon photos have orange skin (as usual for Nikon)? :P no hate, just everytime I see portraits with Nikon or Sony, it's that orange coloured unnatural skin tones that are disturbing my eyes. I do have friends who shoot pro on Sony, and they do agree that it's a bit of work to get the skin tones right. With Fuji, it's a one click solution setting the film sim to anything except for classic neg.
Price:sensor size ratio is overpriced. Why I left m4/3 in 2017 now it's cheap as hell😂 Fuji is getting bad now too
Our host is very hard to please - “no grain control, Really, Nikon!”😊. Have to use my editor w/preset - what a bother!😊
@@gerardneedham Apart from the cost, perhaps a more valid comparison would have been with the Zfc?
Excellent!
don't hate fuji so much please...
No, Fuji hates you that's why they gave you firmware that make your camera worse. Also, you want to buy their camera? yeah good luck, try secondhand instead for double the price. Because Fuji also limiting their inventories.
@ lol, have a nice day frustrated boy…
Fuji made me switch to Nikon for their garbage firmwares and autofocus. So yes I will hate them. Because outside of those issues I enjoyed my Fuji cameras. But they are serious issues that got in the way of professional and even casual use. People should hate on them more, because maybe they'll actually do something besides limiting their inventories and releasing broken firmwares to people who pay thousands for their cameras.
Fuji fans are heartbroken he got a Nikon lol, who care just enjoy the video and don't take it personal, he or Fuji not going to buy You a camera
I know the Nikon is an amazing camera, but this is a terrible comparison video.
Just when im loving the X-T5 content everyone might ditch Fuji :(
@@lafandagastroushious6664 Then the X-T6 will come out, perhaps with amazing autofocus, and everyone will be buying that and doing videos about it. This is how gas and consumerism works.

Fuji might be made by titanium, but the $h.ty paint is gonna still peel off in few weeks…

People who complain about weight, do you even lift bro 💪
I feel people complain about ergo simply because they need to complain about something, if anything. That's how good ZF camera is. Like the S9 is such a crap camera spec wise, you never hear a single person complain it's ergo.
Photographers don't lift, they shoot! 🤣
Lack of a tilt screen on the ZF is disappointing
Nikon images are meh.
I compared them as they are similar price and that’s what really matters when your picking a camera, what can I buy in the same price range.
You left the main point out. Fuji does it without post processing. 😊
Those who sold the T5 for Zf are going to regret again when fuji actually releases a firmware update that actually fixes the AF.
nopee hahaha no regret at all good thing i sold all my fuji gears then shifted to ZF
I use a GFX 100s ii and it's brilliant my XT5 is my walk about camera. I still get goof results from Fujifilm XT5 about 80% hit rate

I was actually just joking. I have Nikon and Sony. I came close to Fuji, but decided not to do another camera system. Color science is whatever Adobe decides it is if you use photoshop. I did have trouble at first, but I figured it out, and now I like my raw images better from the Sony. You have to learn how to use the camera I guess.
