When acclaimed, multi-genre drummer and producer Daru Jones dropped by Sweetwater to give us a firsthand look at his latest New Yorker II signature kit from PDP, we thought it might be fun to see how other drummers would fare with his distinctive drum set. As it turns out, Daru agreed, along with his nephew and fellow drummer, Quavo Anderson. Though we couldn’t get everyone Keith Haring-printed jumpsuits and bucket hats to match Daru’s threads, we decided to gather a handful of Sweetwater’s employee drummers in our renowned Studio A to take Daru’s kit for a spin and give their reactions. Definitely a hard configuration to just sit down and play… Like I get why he does it, just to stand out and be different. But in all honesty it’s definitely less efficient. But also it’s his voice and his expression so I dig it. Cool to look at, but I think imma keep my regular configuration….
Seems ridiculous but I don’t wanna judge anyone… I can see the snare drum being traditionally angled, but the rest of the drum set is not ergonomically making sense… I want to struggle as little as possible when I sit down to play the drums. I wanna make it look like I’m reading the newspaper on a Sunday afternoon yet I’m shredding.

I can’t believe I used to set my Drums up like this years ago. Except at higher “normal” heights. I think I had seen a picture of Keith Moon and his toms were set up facing outward, though it may have just been the angle from where the photo was taken. I had already used a tilted Snare Drum so I figured that would be interesting to try with the rest of the set. It’s quite interesting how we can get used to playing a certain way and it eventually feels normal. I don’t even feel comfortable with flat Toms anymore so I stick with a more conventional set up, it feels more ergonomically correct, which after watching Neil Peart talk about learning from Freddy G, it makes sense for me. This set up still looks so strange, even knowing that for him it probably feels natural.

I am not real familiar with Daru's music, but I do like that he is trying to do something different.... I do have concerns for his physical well being in the future though, cus this setup makes the player hunch over a lot to play it...which could have potential for body damage after a while.
