- Compression release on the camshaft broke off, engine was not cranking.
Seems to be a common failure with the Briggs Intek engines. You will notice the piece that broke off, only about 2/3's of the shaft was solid metal. With it spinning at high speed, its a weak point for failure.

I replaced, batteries, I replaced starters, I replaced solenoids, I replaced bloody everything until I stumbled across a video that said something about it.
If you hold your hand over the air intake you can prevent air getting in and creating a hard to start compression and as soon as it starts take your hand off the air intake.
repace sping for how much air you need
it will also kill the battery quickly. to get by you can remove the breather and put your hand over the breather to block air coming in to start it. it has no air to compress. this is a terrible design by briggs and stratton . there should be a class action lawsuit for this flaw.
Hi..... by "breather" do you mean the air filter? I'm asking because I really just wanna get one or two more mows before season is over. I had planned on getting another tractor next yr. Any info is greatly appreciated!
@@juanreyes25 Pull the breather filter out and cover the inlet hole with your hand, engine will spin, take your hand away as soon as it starts..
Thanks for the video, I believe this is the problem with my craftsman mower.
my neighbor gave us a riding mower last year. a craftsman with an 18 horse b&s intek. ran fine last year but seemed awful busy. well this year the battery was down on my old reliable scotts so i used the craftsman. ran fine but had issues starting it the next time. flywheel rusted up so i cleaned the rust off it and the coil but it turned over so slow but i finally got it started. i guess i will have to tear into the engine and fix this compression release mess. i can start it by blocking the air intake flow but i do not like loose broken parts inside my engines.
btw my scotts with a 23 horse kohler runs fine but the deck needs lots of work due to rusted out places. i looked for a replacement deck but they want more for a used one than i can afford so i will just get some steel and get to welding after i get rid of all the cancer it has.
Stop storing your lawn equipment outside and it will last 30 years before overhaul. Also scrape the grass from under your deck every now and then and don't mow when your grass is wet and the deck will last and last and last. I blow the outside of the deck clean of grass clippings after every mow, with a leaf blower.
Do you know if a compression release cam can be retrofitted into an engine that did not originally have one?

WORK AROUND FOR COMPRESSION RELEASE NOT WORKING
Seal off the intake with your hand or a piece of rubber -- this eventually causes a vacuum build on the intake side which naturally lowers the compression and the engine will begin to turn over faster and faster.
Then just take the seal (hand or rubber mat) away and it will have the turning speed enough to fire up.
It's a bit of an art, so don't expect to do it first try. You make need to bump the starter (i.e. on.off switch) a few times to get the vacuum to build strong enough.

This is what happened to my Troy Bilt...I let a friend work on my mower and it has no power. Would it be worth taking it to a mower repair shop or should I just get a new one?
I bought a Troy-Bilt in 2019 one year after that that camera compression release broke bit my valves and everything took $500 to fix one exactly one year after that it did it again I'll never buy a Briggs & Stratton motor again it was brand new I took it out of the box at Aaron's Aaron fixed it one year one year old then exactly one year after they fix it it did it again oil change regularly kept inside and it was baby I'll never own another break and Stratton
Yeah this particular briggs engine is notorious for having this issue. Hard to justify the repair after multiple times with the same issue.
B&S are total pigs, never will but any new machine with a POS Brigs & Stratton again..
If you don't want to tear engine down... here's a *QUICK STARTING FIX for broken compression release mechanism on cam. Remove air filter. Hold a piece of rubber over intake so the engine can not suck in air to compress.Starter should spin the engine past the compression stroke because there's NO AIR being compressed & it should start/fire next time around.... then quickly remove peice of rubber. A SMALL squirt of starter fluid before blocking intake with rubber MAY help too... but not neccessarily*

Thank you for the suggestion! This will certainly get the engine started however it can still potentially cause more internal engine damage with the loose parts rattling around inside. Still a great tip nonetheless!
Are they on honda 390 , 13hp engines
We have to adjust the valves once a season, mabe it will go two.

Hello, I have a Troybilt snowblower, 179cc suddenly stopped starting. Checked and oil may have been low. While working on it, oil screw was loose, so it could have been out of oil, or very low. But, I have compression. smooth turning the shaft. Could the low oil situation have caused an internal timing issue? Compression release issue? Flywheel/key is fine.
Yes the low oil could have caused a lot of internal damage. Hard to say without inspecting it by disassembling the engine and seeing what's up.

@@raymondjackson6069 I would recommend getting a leak down test done. This will tell you the exact health of the engine. A standard compression test unfortunately is not going to tell you much because if the compression release is still functional you're not going to see the full compression pressure which should be around 120 psi. A leak down test will determine if you have a leak at the intake valve, exhaust valve, or excessive blow by past the piston rings.

Sorry I did not take a video of that. The reassembly is just the reverse of the disassembly. Unfortunately it seems to be a common problem for these Intek single cylinder engines, that and blown head gaskets.

Hello! Sorry for the delay. Its part# 793880 for the camshaft or 84005207. I think thats the kit# which includes the 690564 tappets that get messed up if the release mechanism fails.

valves tighter or looser......
Valves were adjusted properly. Releae mechanism had failed. However, valves too loose can cause the same symptoms shown here
Another P.O.S. Brigs & Stratton engine.. Once upon a time they were built to last and last, now they are built to fail, I stopped buying anything with a B & S engine..
Compression release is only a gimmick to build a motor with more chances to fail and use weaker starters.
None of the the engines I grew up had that junk.
Same here, but they were 8-12 horsepower, not 20. Still, I’d settle for 12 and not having to worry about it.

@@kramnull8962 someone gave me a riding mower with one of those courage engines on it and it looked fairly new. would not start and i found out it had a bent valve and their reliability on the internet is pretty much bad. now the command on the other hand is straight up ballin'. mine on my old scotts mower is still going strong after all these years.
@@paulk5311 I was being very sarcastic. The guys above were commenting on how long this video is.
I really like the longer videos because you can see other parts of the mower that one might be having issues with and see how it is put together. Not everyone gets their engine apart and back together the same day. So it is helpful to have support when it counts.
