Compression release on the camshaft broke off, engine was not cranking. Seems to be a common failure with the Briggs Intek engines. You will notice the piece that broke off, only about 2/3's of the shaft was solid metal. With it spinning at high speed, its a weak point for failure.

    This G.D. shlt vexxed me for years. I replaced, batteries, I replaced starters, I replaced solenoids, I replaced bloody everything until I stumbled across a video that said something about it. If you hold your hand over the air intake you can prevent air getting in and creating a hard to start compression and as soon as it starts take your hand off the air intake.

    Hi Gary, I have contacted you several times over the past few years regarding several generators including the Champion 41532. I own off grid property in Maine and the Champion has been flawlessly providing juice whenever needed. I did an interesting conversion which I wanted to share with you and your viewers. Since many of my appliances run on LPG I thought that it would make sense to convert the genny to LP also. I ordered a Tri Fuel carburetor from Champion (Gasoline, NG, LP) which luckily had the exact same bolt pattern. The only alteration needed was removing the choke lever from the stock carb and installing it on the Tri Fuel carb. So far it runs perfectly and I have a 150 gallon piglet tank that the gas company fills when needed.

      Turkey baster is a cheap method. Then there are transfer pumps you can get at the auto store or if you do this very often like we do, then a fluid vacuum extractor works the best but also the most expensive. Trying to keep it simple for those that are not familiar.

    Hello, I have a Troybilt snowblower, 179cc suddenly stopped starting. Checked and oil may have been low. While working on it, oil screw was loose, so it could have been out of oil, or very low. But, I have compression. smooth turning the shaft. Could the low oil situation have caused an internal timing issue? Compression release issue? Flywheel/key is fine.

    • @sgsmallenginerepair6780
      @sgsmallenginerepair6780 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes the low oil could have caused a lot of internal damage. Hard to say without inspecting it by disassembling the engine and seeing what's up.

      @sgsmallenginerepair6780 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@raymondjackson6069 I would recommend getting a leak down test done. This will tell you the exact health of the engine. A standard compression test unfortunately is not going to tell you much because if the compression release is still functional you're not going to see the full compression pressure which should be around 120 psi. A leak down test will determine if you have a leak at the intake valve, exhaust valve, or excessive blow by past the piston rings.

    Interesting. Some models anchor the holding spring on the intermediate shaft instead of it's own special anchor point. I wonder which came first. Ariens has had a half a dozen different traction aid systems over its history. Some very short lived, some very long lived. Probably the longest lived was their manually lockable open differential which lasted from at least the '70's to the '90's. This one wouldn't be bad, but there is no way to make it low maintenance. You'd have to lube and inspect it every year to keep it operational in such a harsh operating environment.

    • @sgsmallenginerepair6780
      @sgsmallenginerepair6780 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are exactly right. I'm betting that is why we only saw this drive system for a few years and then it was abandoned due to the high rate of service calls on it.

    I don't know what they put in that true fuel but eventually it will loose it's ability to combust. The 2 cycle mix especially. It will not foul like ethanol fuel but it will not combust after a certain period of time. The fuel stabilizers polymerize in the carburetor worse than if you had just left the gasoline in there. It makes an absolute mess and stinks rancid. I have stopped telling people to use it.

    • @sgsmallenginerepair6780
      @sgsmallenginerepair6780 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comment! I do not use any fuel stabilizers at all. I've known for a while now and Taryl Fixes All here on TH-cam proved that they're a bunch of snake oil. Sure they prevent phase separation of the gasoline and ethanol blend but it does not stop ethanol from being hydroscopic absorbing moisture from the air which is where the problem begins. Tru Fuel when not mixed with any stabilizers or pump gas has worked great in my experience. I will say that yes the vaporous portion of the fuel does evaporate away making the leftover liquid portion less likely to combust. A little bit of starting fluid to help push that older fuel through to get the fresher fuel in the tank into the carburetor has worked for me. I've only experienced this when the fuel has sat for over a year. Ideally machines should not be sitting that long and should be started and run every few weeks to every few months at the most. I have not seen what you describe with the two cycle mix. All of my two cycle equipment that I do still use have run just fine. I'm sure the commercial guys will say otherwise using pump gas and mixing their own two-cycle oil. For the average residential customer that occasionally uses their two cycle equipment but lets them sit more times than use, tru-fuel, VP Fuel, and other ethanol-free alkylate fuels are a good insurance policy to prevent having to do any kind of fuel system work.

    Thank you. I removed both bolts on the carburetor (actually, just the bottom/middle one), and then I couldn't tighten it back on. I searched around and the Toro manual says to NOT remove it. What do I do? Does it just not need to be tightened down much? I feel like it tightens for a bit but then briefly gets easier to turn, like it feels stripped.

    • @tommanno6875

      @@sgsmallenginerepair6780I have the Toro 518 ZE. I ended up tightening it as much as possible and it did start (before that I drained all the fuel and oil, replaced both). I ran it for a good half hour after that, although I had to adjust the rich/lean lever. If it was too far forward/right, it would end up shutting off when I really pushed it. I had to take it easy. It sounded like it was sputtering a bit - could that be the spark plug? I was going to swap that next (might need it again this Friday). Thanks for the reply! Thanks a ton for this! I recently got a free, but non-running and very neglected Deluxe 28. After getting it running and going over everything, it was obvious it had rarely if ever been serviced, so both wheels were rusted on, then the sleeve with the brass bushings (called the "axle clicker" in the parts list) was seized onto the axle. I even managed to snap the lock arm lever while...enthusiastically getting the right side wheel off...but I did eventually get both wheels off. That differential/clicker mechanism was Greek to me until I saw your video. The part starting at 1:57 showed exactly how it's supposed to work. Fast forward a day, after much more struggling, I got the sleeve removed, cleaned all the rust off, braised the lock arm lever back together, packed everything back together with Lucas red and tacky grease. Now this old beast works like new! I'd have never figured out how that mechanism worked without your video!

    If you don't want to tear engine down... here's a *QUICK STARTING FIX for broken compression release mechanism on cam. Remove air filter. Hold a piece of rubber over intake so the engine can not suck in air to compress.Starter should spin the engine past the compression stroke because there's NO AIR being compressed & it should start/fire next time around.... then quickly remove peice of rubber. A SMALL squirt of starter fluid before blocking intake with rubber MAY help too... but not neccessarily* Video as shown here: "Briggs & Stratton Compression releif fix" th-cam.com/video/ggV0wS6VMSs/w-d-xo.html

      Its because none of those additives work. They help to prevent phase separation between the ethanol and gasoline, but it will not prevent the ethanol from absorbing moisture in the air as its hydroscopic. For those reasons any additive/stabilizer is useless. They are the snake oil for the small engine industry IMO. Tary Fixes All did the additive experiment on his channel and proved it. :-)

    Another thing to note, as I've run into this problem on occasion with my Ariens Deluxe 28, is that sometimes the outer piece on the outer grooved piece in the trigger lock system can shift off of the tensioned bar on the secondary shaft, which you can see directly above it at 2:48. The two pieces, in this circumstance will not separate to activate/deactivate the trigger lock system.

    This was my first time working on a snow blower. Your video, and others, helped me replace all the belts, remove the wheels, lube everything, replace sheer bolts, adjust cables... But the biggest mystery was the differential. It was not working. So after about 15 minutes of examining the mechanism and reviewing your video, I discovered the "locking" mechanism (spring loaded arm shown on left side) of the ratchet was not in the right position. It was rotated approximately 180-degrees from where it should have been. It appears the Pros at the shop did not assemble it correctly. Thanks for the help.

    Something else to note when I was adjusting mine. If the cable is too tight when you adjust it, it won’t allow enough tension on the return spring making the locking mechanism not work correctly. I over adjusted the cable on mine and the diff lock would work 30% of the time. Loosened the cable a few turns and now works great. Make sure everything is nice and clean/lubed up. Thanks for the great video and hope this helps someone!
