    I think this is a real eye-opener to all student pilots and licensed pilots worldwide. I have experienced so many CFI's out there who have not been helpful at all to my learning and who have just been making training rather unpleasant and making flying less enjoyable which is a massive shame. I have a CFI like this for my Multi-Engine rating, it is an absolute nightmare flying with these kinds of people. The worst part is he has a nice side to him, but his teaching side is just terrible.
    They never give you chance to actually process and learn, as soon as they spot you making a mistake, they have to go on this rant phase, I'm not sure how that's supposed to make you better. In all cases, it makes me leave the plane feeling deflated and makes me question my career choice.

    Sadly, I had this experience with a CFI early in my training. My regular CFI was out with Covid, and the substitute...-well- was similar to this in many ways. My former flight school viewed go-arounds as a failure in general, and I still sometimes feel that sense of failure when I don't nail all the aspects of an approach and come in too high or too low and have to go around. Thanks for bringing this to the attention of aviation enthusiasts.

    • @kimberlywentworth9160
      @kimberlywentworth9160 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A go around is not a failure. They are good to do. You need to practice them also. There are some terrible CFI's out there.

    • @kimberlywentworth9160
      @kimberlywentworth9160 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PS, Like when you have strong cross winds and you hit some sort of wind that makes your approach unstable. Even the best pilots do go- arounds. It's part of flying.I would rather practice in strong winds and get the experience.

    • @ro-86alkonost78
      @ro-86alkonost78 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What the freak? Go-arounds saved lives. Even if you're an elite among CFIs, you will still go-around if the situation calls for it. In our country's checkrides, the students will instantly fail if they insisted on landing with bad approach instead of going around even if they passed all the other maneuvers as standard. Why? The reason is simple; not going around during bad approaches is a dangerous attitude. The other students who get 2 or 3 standard deviation marks from pilot examiners who chose to go around due to bad approach and landed the plane safely will get a pass. Pilot examiners here don't just examine the students' knowledge and ability to perform maneuvers, they also examine the students' attitude and decision makings, they want to see that the students are safe pilots before passing them in their checkrides.

The one time, that CFI applied for an airline job only to discover that the same student pilot whom he told those horrible words is already an airline pilot there. They met inside that airline company's compound, his former student reminded him of the moment he was berated by that CFI and then shouted, "Security! Get him out of here!"

    Lots of instructors like that, i have experienced in my training and finally have switched but it’s a shame that they treat ppl like this. I know its a skit and not actual but their are instructors that make the cockpit of an aircraft the most stressful place and good ones that instill confidence in the student ability and instruct in a way that’s good for learning. I wanted to pull power back when we were abeam numbers, no tower orders to extend downwind. He said "No". Then we did the same exact thing on the next pattern: pull power back on his "demonstration". I was one of the blessed ones. My primary CFI when I was going for my PPL was not only super patient, but he was also very supportive. I, personally, have never flown with someone whom I would consider a bad CFI; sometimes they were a little more direct with instructions, but never rude or demeaning. I did fly with one instructor that did not like how slowly I was taxing across a runway; she was pretty forceful, but I'll tell you I will always remember her advice when crossing runways. One other instructor commented (loudly) about my airspeed as I was turning crosswind and while he expressed concern (I was losing airspeed) he was not rude about it. Again, I still recall that guys advice every time I turn in the pattern. That said, a friend of mine who I was in flight school had to ask for a different instructor because his was pretty demeaning. One time John bounced a landing, and his instructor told him that was his best one yet, then laughed. That was the final straw.

    Couldn't make it through this video. I would have changed instructors before the end of the lesson. Although Lew, you'll get a kick out of this one. On Mothers Day I took my wife out to the airport to watch me fly. We had a 15 knot right crosswind and my CFI wanted me to do a No Flap Landing in preparation for my solo. The first one, I landed it, but was off centerline. The second and third, I couldn't get lined up so I went around. So my CFI took the controls from me and struggled as well. When we finally called the lesson due to winds and made our last landing a Full Stop, he told my wife after I got out of the airplane that he didn't realize how stiff that wind was and that I handled the crosswind better than he did. I got my instructors attention that I was progressing and I hope to solo very soon.

    I just ended up here after flying with a different CFI for my night rating. I'm having quite a deja vu right now. I will not fly with that particular CFI again and instead fly with the guy who trained me to get my PPL. He was patient, enjoying his work, respectful, helpful and did not take offense when I challenged his teachings. Obviously, almost all of the time he was right, so he would just explain things in more detail so they made more sense to me. Regardless of right or wrong, he encouraged me to speak up if something didn't seem right instead of thinking I'm a lowlife that is not allowed to speak up.
    Thanks so much for the video, it really struck a chord.

    I’ve been incredibly lucky, man. I’ve clicked well with two out of the three CFIs I’ve had over the years. The other wasn’t terrible at all…he was just a bit terse, impatient and sliiiightly overbearing. Honestly, it’s not a bad thing, in the least, for a CFI to demand high level performance. That should be the main focus, of course. To me, the key is getting high level performance out of a student in a way that makes him feel as comfortable as possible (depending on the situation and severity of the deficiency). If I’m a danger, you have to let me know in no uncertain terms. But if my back-pressure isn’t exactly perfect on the second steep turn I’ve performed in my entire life, that’s no reason to get annoyed (something I encountered in my travels). Hell, I teach guitar and it takes most people five years to become a *mediocre* guitarist so I understand these things. But if you work with people and they’re paying you for a service, you have to “play the game” at least a little bit. If they’re here because they want to be here, make them want to come back…that’s all. It’s not IMC-down-to-minimums science…

    During my glider training I had a similar experience. The CFI-G was no where near this bad, he was just a really old-school kind of CFI. At one point, after being pecked to death with pretty aggressive nit-picking, I couldn't even answer a simple question of why I was doing something, my response was just "I don't know, I am really flustered and just let me get us down on the ground so we can talk about it". That night I debated whether I was cut out for flying. But after that flight we actually started getting along pretty well. Eventually we even flew together quite a bit after I got my PPL-G. Maybe that was a test to either to see where my saturation limit was or whether I could ever be a real PIC.

    Ive been a CFI for 2 months, and honestly its so fun, and i would never treat students like this. The one that gets me is taking over the controls after a tiny mistake. They will never learn if you do this, if i notice mistakes are being made, i start talking them through whats happening, and talk them through their mistakes, and if i feel like not taking over will risk our safety, thats when i take over. But i think a lot of CFIs also forget, that our students are paying a lot of money and are our clients, they are entitled to good instruction and a good experienc, just yelling at them and making them feel bad is pointless.

    During my early time as a student, we had instructors (both ground and flight) who are far worse than this. Some just teach us once and shout or even humiliate and/or cuss at us after a mistake. Some even made students do pushups because according to them, the school is like a military, but they're just wannabe military instructors. Now, there are few instructors who act like that in that same school, and these wannabe military instructors, both former and current, complain that students nowadays complain about the "brutality", and claim that they should just deal with the harsh reality of life.

    If a CFI is being tough on his/her student because they genuinely want them to grow and succeed, that’s one thing. They should have a heart of a teacher/mentor. I’ve fired CFI’s since getting my instrument rating. If I see them purposely doing something risky and unnecessary or blatantly encouraging me to break a reg, that’s a one strike your out. I used to just “go with the flow”. Aviation is too expensive and unforgiving to not demand the best from your CFI’s. Btw, excellent video for new students and pilots working on their CFI!

    This is an incredible video, thanks! I'm planning to start training this summer (if everything works out), and I've watched many videos of all the things that are challenging or can go wrong and none of that has turned me off, but I don't mind admitting that after watching this, getting a bad CFI is a concern. The take-away, I assume, is that you need to be prepared to change CFIs if necessary, but I've also been hearing that they are increasingly in short supply, which could make that a challenge, depending on the location.

  • @chrisbrooks6697
    @chrisbrooks6697 ปีที่แล้ว

    My CFI is awesome. He doesn't bitch at me, he doesn't yell at me, he doesn't get frustrated. He lets me make mistakes as long as I'm safe, and most of the time, I catch them before he says anything. I think it's a real confidence booster to be able to catch your own mistakes. And I am a grown man, so if I do make a mistake I don't catch, all he has to do is tell me. Sometimes I get overwhelmed, especially with radio calls, lots of airplanes, and crosswind landings, and if I ask for help with the radios, or anything, even making sure my speeds are right for 100th time, I don't have worry about getting ridiculed about it. Harping on it, whining, complaining, ridiculing, does nothing to help me learn because it's hard to learn when you're wanting to punch the guy in the right seat! After the flight we do a debriefing and discuss everything I did, right and wrong. And if I make a joke about something I did wrong, he realizes it's not because I don't take it seriously; making a point of it like that helps me remember my mistake. Right now I'm almost ready to solo, and when I do I'll be confident because I was never afraid to ask a question or to ask for extra help with a procedure. To teach someone anything, you need to learn how they learn and adjust your teaching to them. If your CFI is making you feel like a failure, you need to find another one. It's that simple! I hope any students stuck in a situation like you portrayed see this and realize that it's not supposed to be this way. There ARE good CFI's out there! I mean they can just watch some of your other videos to see that!

    I've flown with several CFIs over the past 6 years. I have NO doubt of their knowledge. They had gotten their CFI ticket. I've noticed many CFIs need more training on when to share what they know. Several have given me very little feedback. I've flown with a tailwheel instructor today who gave me the chapters to read in the handbook and articles to help better understand what needs fixed. He wins my "most helpful CFI I've ever had" award.

      @@LewDixAviation that CFI checkride was difficult but you can pass if you’re prepared.
      This was the email from the most anal examiner.
      Attached find an application for your CFI Initial checkride. Please fill and have available for the beginning of our appointment. Pay special attention to the required endorsements that must appear in your logbook. I recommend that your instructor use Advisory Circular AC61-65H Appendix 1 for the required endorsements rather than those that may be preprinted in a logbook.
      Your teaching techniques and procedures should closely follow those described in the Aviation Instructor’s Handbook. Be prepared to teach ANY of the tasks outlined in the CFI PTS, but as an assignment you may expect, plan to instruct on the following:
      Ground: Instructor Responsibilities and Professionalism, The Teaching Process, Runway Incursion, Logbooks and Endorsements, Aeromedical Factors, Weather Information, Steep Turns. Pace your time to present the above in about 5-6 hours with short breaks as needed.
      Flight: Assume that adequate ground instruction was accomplished previously. Traffic Patterns, Before Takeoff Check, Straight and climbing turns, Steep turns, Lazy Eights, Slow Flight, Power off Stall, Accelerated Stall, Recovery from Unusual Attitudes, Eights on Pylons, S-Turns across a road, Emergency Descent/Landing, System malfunctions, Short field takeoff, Normal takeoff, Short field Landing, Poweroff 180, Postflight procedure.
      We will certainly add/change some instructional tasks as we plan the day.
      I have us scheduled for 0700 hrs on Thursday, June 15, at Thrust Flight, KADS. Please arrange access to the flight school at that early hour.
      I had to get re examined by another examiner that was fair and more reasonable.

    Worn out CFI: So here's the other side of the rainbow. Hey Kids!. As a 25+ year CFI. I have finally had enough. Don't get me wrong. I truly love to fly and am damn good at teaching how to actually fly an airplane. My time as an instructor speaks for itself. I am just worn out from having to teach an aspiring pilot all about physiological BS.... about inner ears, vestibular systems, etc, and all that seemingly boring non flying subject matter. I never minded reading about it, but spending my time teaching it has just gotten the best of me. I don't find it interesting.... as a matter of fact I find it too painful to even teach one more student about the subject matter. I will just fly on my own from now on. The days of teaching this mundane subject matter is over for me. I just can't get myself to teach mundane crap anymore, and sadly I have to if I want to keep teaching people how to fly..... All the best to all of you "flicker vertigo" and "empty field myopia" troopers are out there. I'm passing the torch to you. Have fun teaching it (or not). Check out page 1-43 of the Jeppesen Instrument Commercial Textbook. It may make you want to commit yourself. Njoy your gelatinous substances with your utricle and saccule. Be careful of your otoliths too. Remember.... Knowing how to recite these terms is much more important than making a a good no-go decision when shooting an IAP. (sarcasm) . If I wrote the book, I'd just say "TRUST AND VERIFY YOUR DANG INSTRUMENTS, and IGNORE ALL THOSE SENSORY TRICKS THAT YOUR BODY PLAYS ON YOU. Enough already. I never wanted to be a doctor. Have fun kids!
